Qualitative Inquiry in the Present Tense: Writing a New History (International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry Series)

by Norman K. Denzin Michael D. Giardina

In Qualitative Inquiry in the Present Tense, contributors engage with epistemological and philosophical questions concerning the conduct of qualitative inquiry in the present moment, and especially as it relates to various understandings of writing in/as inquiry.Topics addressed include methodological processes, questions of narrative uprootedness, relational inquiry, Indigenous ethico-onto-epistemologies, storytelling, and transformative writing forms and practices. This is a messy, often unruly collection (in the best way possible) of disparate ideas strung tightly together by literal and metaphorical questions of the research act of writing. Contributors from the United States, Australia, Canada, England, and Scotland imaginatively conceive of new qualitative futures—and how we might write ourselves there. This evocative new book is a must-read for faculty and students alike who are interested in and engaged with questions and ideas oriented toward understanding our current historical present in qualitative research—a moment in which the field is perpetually in motion or in flux, with new theories, methods, and orientations arising, competing, and even contradicting one another.

Predicting Solubility of New Drugs: Handbook of Critically Curated Data for Pharmaceutical Research

by Alex Avdeef

In pharmaceutical research, solubility plays a key part in the assessment of pharmacokinetic risks. Poor drug absorption, reduced efficacy, excessive metabolism, and adverse reactions are frequently related to issues of drug solubility. During early discovery research at pharmaceutical companies, many thousands of molecules are considered. Most are rejected due to perceived unfavorable properties. Here the author uses the Wiki-pS0TM database, which forms the backbone of this unique handbook. Also discussed is the emerging class of therapeutically promising research molecules called PROTACs (proteolysis-targeting chimeras), showing a propensity for ‘undruggable’ targets.FEATURES• A comprehensive and unique listing of measured aqueous intrinsic solubility focusing on drug-like and drug-relevant molecules.• The database can be used to predict the solubility of research pharmaceutical molecules.• Includes downloadable files of the database (.csv format).• The mining of the database can result in a better design of solubility assay protocols, leading to better quality of measurements.• Artificial intelligence and Bayesian statistics will likely be key to this subject area in the future.Alex Avdeef has been an American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Fellow since 2014, a former visiting senior research fellow at King’s College London, and is the author of Absorption and Drug Development (2nd ed., Wiley, 2012). In 2021, the book was translated into Chinese, by translators affiliated with the China Food and Drug Administration. For nearly 50 years, he has been teaching, researching, and developing methods, instruments, and analysis software for the measurement of ionization constants, solubility, dissolution, and permeability of drugs. His accomplishments in the development of instrumentation include several well-known instruments that are or recently have been manufactured by leading companies in the instrument market, including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Sirius Analytical, and Pion Inc. He has over 200 technical publications in primary scientific journals and book chapters. He has written several comprehensive technical guides and is a co-inventor on six patents. He cofounded Sirius Analytical (UK) in 1989, pION Inc. (USA) in 1996, and founded in–ADME Research (New York City) in 2011. His other positions were at Orion Research, Syracuse University, UC Berkeley, and Caltech.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics: Illustrative Worked Examples of Surface and Subsurface Flows

by Vedat Batu

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics: Illustrative Worked Examples of Surface and Subsurface Flows presents the basic principles of fluid mechanics through the use of numerous worked examples. Some readers may have interest only in the application parts of various principles without paying too much attention to the derivation details of equations. Other readers may have interest both in derivation details and their applications. As a result, this book is designed to address both needs, and most derivation details are included as example problems. Therefore, those who are not interested in the details of derivations may skip them without interrupting the effective use of the book. It serves as an effective learning source for college students and as a teaching tool for instructors (with an included solutions manual), as well as for practicing professionals in the areas of fluid mechanics and hydraulics.

Sensation Fiction and Modernity: The Meanings of Ambivalence in Mid-Victorian Britain

by James Aaron Green

This book re-reads the relationship between the Victorian sensation novel and modernity. Whereas critics have long recognized its appearance in the form of nervous subjects and technologically-enabled mobility, Green contends that sensation fiction also depicts modernity in the form of intellectual and moral discontinuity. Through closely historicist readings of novels by Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, as well as by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and Rhoda Broughton, this book traces how discontinuity is manifested in the suspenseful plotting of these fictions, through which readers are challenged to revise conventional assumptions about the world and adopt more contingent perspectives. The study demonstrates that reading for this sense of modernity does not merely uncover the genre's engagements with various mid-century contexts. More fundamentally, it broaches a new sense of the function and significance of sensation fiction: the acclimatization of its readers to the discontinuities of modern existence.

Sexualised Governmentalities: Critical Perspectives on Homosexism (SpringerBriefs in Sociology)

by Angelos Bollas

This book critically examines the concept of sexualised governmentalities, a framework for understanding the evolving discourse and power dynamics surrounding discrimination on the basis of sexual practices. Central to this exploration is the shift from traditional heteronormative perspectives to a more complex hetero/homonormative context, where the structure and organisation of sexual relationships gain prominence over the gender or sexual orientation of the participants. A key focus of the book is the concept of homosexism within the realm of gay masculinity studies. The author discusses homosexism as a form of discrimination experienced by gay men from other gay men, highlighting the influence of heteronormative patriarchal society on these interactions. It calls for a broader recognition and acceptance of diverse sexual expressions and challenges the reader to re-evaluate the societal norms around masculinity and sexual behaviour. Sexualised Governmentalities is an important contribution to the discourse on sexual identity and practice, offering insights for a more inclusive and empathetic understanding of sexual diversity.

Tesla Turbine: A Practical Design Guide for Boundary Layer or Bladeless Turbines

by Alberto Traverso Avinash Renuke Anestis I. Kalfas

This book aims at providing the reader with up-to-date knowledge about Tesla turbine features, mechanical design, and performance characteristics. A Tesla machine, in general, is characterised by the absence of rotating blades, therefore it is also called bladeless or boundary layer machine. In this book, suitable numerical approaches for the fluid-dynamic analysis are described, with practical examples related to physical prototypes designed, built and operated by the Authors. Interest in small scale turbines is growing mainly for energy efficiency and power recovery in a variety of applications. Considering small scales, conventional bladed turbines impose manufacturing limitations, lower performance and higher cost, which hinder their implementation. Tesla bladeless turbomachines are being re-discovered due to many advantages such as their simple design and ease of manufacturing with acceptable performance, especially for small-scale power generation and energy harvesting. To contribute to the spread of efficient and viable Tesla turbines (or expanders), this book presents holistic design guidelines to Tesla turbines, encompassing geometrical definition of Tesla rotor, of Tesla stator, of Tesla rotor-stator-casing assembly, providing practical correlations to take into account various loss mechanisms, and discussing the optimal design point definition for such type of century-aged but always young turbines.

Finite Element Methods: Parallel-Sparse Statics and Eigen-Solutions

by Duc Thai Nguyen

This new edition includes three new chapters, 7 through 9, that have very broad, practical applications in engineering and science. In addition, the author’s latest research results incorporated into the new textbook demonstrates better performance than the popular METIS software for partitioning graphs, partitioning finite element meshes, and producing fill-reducing orderings for sparse matrices. The new Chapter 8, and its pre-requisite, Chapter 7, present a state-of-the-art algorithm for computing the shortest paths for real-life (large-scale) transportation networks with minimum computational time. This approach has not yet appeared in any existing textbooks and it could open the doors for other transportation engineering applications. Chapter 9 vastly expands the scope of the previous edition by including sensitivity (gradient) computation and MATLAB’s built-in function “fmincon” for obtaining the optimum (or best) solution for general engineering problems.

Diagnostik von Manipulationen

by Heribert Wienkamp

Psychopathy in the Workplace: Coping Strategies for Employees

by Marie-Line Germain

The onset of the pandemic has placed a greater emphasis on mental health, with many organizations making it a business imperative to ensure that employees are fully supported. Research on mental health in the workplace continues to grow, though there is a dearth of scholarly writings taking a micro approach to understanding the impact of negative work environments. This three-book series explores issues related to personality disorders and work-related suicides and the effect on employees and leaders. This volume focuses on the harmful effects of psychopathy in the workplace. The book is divided into three sections: defining psychopathy, identifying it through its effects on workplace productivity and performance, and understanding how that knowledge can limit its effect. With chapter contributions from authors around the world, this collection offers global perspectives on the harmful role that psychopathy can play in the workplace. Tackling topics such as abusive supervision and workplace bullying, this book will advance scholarship related to employee well-being, employee engagement, and counterproductive workplace behaviors.
