VenCo: A Novel

by Cherie Dimaline

From the bestselling author of Empire of Wild, a wickedly subversive, deliciously imaginative, deeply feminist novel of contemporary witches on the rise—a book that only the supremely gifted storyteller Cherie Dimaline could write.Lucky St. James, orphaned daughter of a bad-ass Métis good-times girl, is barely hanging on to her nowhere life when she finds out that she and her grandmother, Stella, are about to be evicted from their apartment. Bad to worse in a heartbeat. Then one night, doing laundry in the building's dank basement, Lucky feels an irresistible something calling to her. Crawling through a hidden hole in the wall, she finds a tarnished silver spoon depicting a story-book hag over letters that spell out S-A-L-E-M. Which alerts Salem-born Meena Good, finder of a matching spoon, to Lucky's existence. One of the most powerful witches in North America, Meena has been called to bring together seven special witches and seven special spoons—infused with magic and scattered to the four directions more than a century ago—to form a magic circle that will restore women to their rightful power. Under the wing of the international headhunting firm VenCo, devoted to placing exceptional women in roles where they can influence business, politics and the arts, Meena has spent years searching out witches hiding in plain sight wherever women gather: suburban book clubs, Mommy & Me groups, temp agencies. Lucky and her spoon are number six. With only one more spoon to find, a very powerful adversary has Meena's coven in his sights—Jay Christos, a roguish and deadly witch-hunter as old as witchcraft itself. As the clock ticks toward a now-or-never deadline, Meena sends Lucky and her grandmother on a dangerous, sometimes hilarious, road trip through the United States in search of the seventh spoon. The trail leads them at last to the darkly magical city of New Orleans, where Lucky's final showdown with Jay Christos will determine whether the coven will be completed, ushering in a new beginning, or whether witches will be forced to remain forever underground.

EU Climate Diplomacy Towards the IMO and ICAO (Palgrave Studies in European Union Politics)

by George Dikaios

This book delves into the topic of the European climate diplomacy and the ways it is performed, both internally in terms of constructing a negotiating position, and externally in regards to how the European Union (EU) as a whole exports this position at the international level. To do that, the analytical framework is built around two major pillars: first, the literature on European public policy, specifically regarding policymaking, and second, the Normative Power Europe approach. Aiming to test whether European climate diplomacy actually works, the book utilizes two examples/case studies, namely the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The selection of these examples is based on an array of rationales, but the main reason is that both international organizations (IOs) do not contribute (at least their fair share) in the global efforts of tackling climate change. The book thus showcases the strategically driven efforts of the EU as whole to export its climate norm to these two IOs. It argues that, if it weren’t for the EU, these two organizations would not have been active in negotiating on climate change issues to such extent.

Rome and Persia in Late Antiquity: Neighbours and Rivals

by Beate Dignas Engelbert Winter

The foundation of the Sasanian Empire in Persia in AD 224 established a formidable new power on the Roman Empire's eastern frontier, and relations over the next four centuries proved turbulent. This book provides a chronological narrative of their relationship, supported by a substantial collection of translated sources illustrating structural patterns. The political goals of the two sides, their military confrontations, and their diplomatic solutions are discussed, as well as the common interests between the two powers. Special attention is given to the situation of Arabia and Armenia, to economic aspects, the protection of the frontiers, the religious life in both empires and the channels of communication between East and West. Considerable attention is also paid to exploring the role played by the Sasanians in the history of the ancient Near East. The book will prove invaluable for students and non-specialists interested in late antiquity and early Byzantium.

ACNE, Beat it!

by Pílula Digital

It's hard to think of anyone who has NEVER had at least one Pimple. But do you need to LOSE YOUR MIND when one APPEARS like this, without even WARNING? Of course not. Rihanna even gave an EXAMPLE of this, when she posted a photo without makeup on Instagram and read in the comments: 'Oops, can I SQUEEZE your pimple?' Her response was sharp as always: 'No. Let her SHINE too'. Pimples happen. The best way to deal with them is, first, to have PATIENCE (never squeeze!) and BE CAREFUL, so that they don't evolve into a bigger INFECTION or leave a SCAR, which will then be even more annoying to treat. For anyone looking for ways to treat this PROBLEM -- which affects both teenagers and adults -- this BOOK fits like a GLOVE! Because HERE, you will LEARN about the different types of ACNE and the treatment indicated for each case.

Acné, ¡lárgate!

by Pílula Digital

Es difícil pensar para quien NUNCA tuvo al menos un GRANO. Pero ¿necesita PERDER la CABEZA cuando uno APARECE así, sin AVISAR siquiera? ¿No, verdad?
