Nonlinear Second Order Elliptic Equations

by Mingxin Wang Peter Y. Pang

This book focuses on the following three topics in the theory of boundary value problems of nonlinear second order elliptic partial differential equations and systems: (i) eigenvalue problem, (ii) upper and lower solutions method, (iii) topological degree method, and deals with the existence of solutions, more specifically non-constant positive solutions, as well as the uniqueness, stability and asymptotic behavior of such solutions. While not all-encompassing, these topics represent major approaches to the theory of partial differential equations and systems, and should be of significant interest to graduate students and researchers. Two appendices have been included to provide a good gauge of the prerequisites for this book and make it reasonably self-contained.A notable strength of the book is that it contains a large number of substantial examples. Exercises for the reader are also included. Therefore, this book is suitable as a textbook for graduate students who havealready had an introductory course on PDE and some familiarity with functional analysis and nonlinear functional analysis, and as a reference for researchers.

Nordic Welfare Cities: Negotiating Urban Citizenship since 1850 (ISSN)

by Magnus Linnarsson Mats Hallenberg

This book examines Nordic cities from 1850 and their transformation from traditional, oligarchic towns to modern, inclusive welfare cities. In the contemporary world, the role of cities as hotbeds for progressive change has become increasingly topical. Historical studies on how Nordic cities addressed social and environmental questions a hundred years ago and how they eventually created new and inclusive policies for the future is a useful contribution to the current debate. The concept of the welfare city is addressed and elaborated upon to analyse the attempts by urban authorities to solve the problems following industrialization and urbanization. From the late nineteenth century, municipal public services promoted the integration of new groups in the urban community including workers, immigrants, women and children. The contributions in this book analyse various examples of welfare and public services that include infrastructure and transport systems, health care, housing conditions, outdoor life and entertainment. The chapters highlight the arguments and considerations promoting welfare policies, while also addressing differences between the Nordic countries. The evolution of the Nordic welfare city was a process of several overlapping phases or dimensions. This volume will be of value to students and scholars alike interested in urban history, social and cultural history and European history.

Normandy: A Naval History of D-Day and the Battle for France

by Nick Hewitt

The first account of the Allied navies&’ vital contribution to the success of the D-Day landings and the Normandy campaign The Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe is one of the most widely recognised events of modern history. The assault phase, Operation Neptune, began with the D-Day landings in Normandy—one of the most complex amphibious operations in history, involving 7,000 ships and nearly 200,000 men. But despite this immense effort, the wider naval campaign has been broadly forgotten. Nick Hewitt draws on fascinating new material to describe the violent sea battle which mirrored the fighting on land, and the complex campaign at sea which enabled the Allied assault. Aboard ships ranging from frail plywood landing craft to sleek destroyers, sailors were active combatants in the operation of June 1944, and had worked tirelessly to secure the Seine Bay in the months preceding it. They fought battles against German submarines, aircraft, and warships, and maintained careful watch to keep control of the English Channel. Hewitt recounts these sailors&’ stories for the first time—and shows how, without their efforts, D-Day would have failed.

The Northeast Corridor: The Trains, the People, the History, the Region

by David Alff

All aboard for the first comprehensive history of the hard-working and wildly influential Northeast Corridor. Traversed by thousands of trains and millions of riders, the Northeast Corridor might be America’s most famous railway, but its influence goes far beyond the right-of-way. David Alff welcomes readers aboard to see how nineteenth-century train tracks did more than connect Boston to Washington, DC. They transformed hundreds of miles of Atlantic shoreline into a political capital, a global financial hub, and home to fifty million people. The Northeast Corridor reveals how freight trains, commuter rail, and Amtrak influenced—and in turn were shaped by—centuries of American industrial expansion, metropolitan growth, downtown decline, and revitalization. Paying as much attention to Aberdeen, Trenton, New Rochelle, and Providence as to New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, Alff provides narrative thrills for history buffs, train enthusiasts, and adventurers alike. What’s more, he offers a glimpse into the future of the corridor. New infrastructural plans—supported by President Joe Biden, famously Amtrak’s biggest fan—envision ever-faster trains zipping along technologically advanced rails. Yet those tracks will literally sit atop a history that links the life of Frederick Douglass, who fled to freedom by boarding a train in Baltimore, to the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, which is expected to be the newest link in the corridor by 2032. Trains have long made the places that make America, and they still do.

Nossa vez de poluir

by Ronald Rwakigumba

Not How I Pictured It: A Novel

by Robin Lefler

The OC meets The Unhoneymooners in this shipwreck romcom when the reunited cast of a hit show get stuck on a deserted island with nothing but their complete lack of survival skills, simmering drama, and the sneaking suspicion that someone is up to no good. Agnes “Ness” Larkin has been out of the spotlight for twenty years since her quick departure from a starring role in a hit teen TV drama. When the show is tapped for a reboot, no one is more surprised than Ness that she signs on to rejoin the cast, leaving behind a normal—if not exactly thrilling—life in Toronto. Also back for round two are Libby, Ness’s former best friend and soon to be makeup empire magnate, and Hayes, Ness’s one-that-got-away who has risen to A-list fame (and somehow gotten even better looking) in the years she’s been gone. When they set off for filming near the Bahamas, a storm leaves the seven actors and one production assistant stranded on a small island with only an abandoned, derelict mansion to wait out the storm. But when the weather clears and a new day rises—their boat is gone too.Stuck in a bizarre, crumbling house on an uninhabited island with possibly the most useless survival group in history, Ness and her co-stars are forced to revisit a minefield of past transgressions and come to terms with the adults they’ve become as they work together to ride out the storm. Or at least pretend to—they are actors, after all.Interspersed with weather reports, fictional memoir excerpts, a dating profile and Perez-Hilton-esque blog posts, Not How I Pictured It is a rollicking novel of delightful absurdity, pithy dialogue, and no shortage of heart.

Not How I Pictured It

by Robin Lefler

A sharply hilarious and ultimately heartfelt novel about a former teen superstar who grudgingly agrees to a reboot of the show that made her (in)famous, from the author of Reasonable Adults. Twenty years after Ocean Views went off the air, the beloved TV show about teenage romance and angst is back. No one is more surprised than its former star, Agnes &“Ness&” Larkin, that she&’s agreed to step back into the role of Hailey Grant. After her father/manager took off with her earnings, Ness ran away from the spotlight in shame. But maybe it&’s time to stare her past, and her castmates, in their discreetly Botoxed faces. That enthusiasm lasts until the first table read, which, in co-star Coco&’s words, is &“like a high school reunion without the dim lighting or booze.&” Ness assumed her old fling Hayes Beaumont would be too busy doing Big Hollywood Things to take part, but there he is, seated beside her, exuding pheromones and success. En route to the deluxe Bahamas resort where they&’re to start filming, the cast gets stranded by a storm. Stuck on a tiny island with a paltry cache of food and quite possibly the most useless survival group in history, Ness tries to reconcile her youthful dreams with where she&’s ended up—figuratively and literally. The producers wanted drama on and off-screen, and they&’re going to get it, but where will Ness be when it&’s all over?

Nothing But the Bones: A Novel

by Brian Panowich

With lyrical prose and hard-hitting depictions of the hardscrabble life in the rural south, Brian Panowich, author of Bull Mountain, Like Lions, and Hard Cash Valley, delivers a gripping new chapter in his tales of McFalls County in Nothing But the Bones. In McFalls County, local crime boss Gareth Burroughs runs everything on the mountain. With a dead body and countless witnesses, Nails and the woman become fugitives on the run, and unlikely partners. But on the road to Jacksonville, where a possible escape awaits, there’s more than one interested party on the pair’s trail, and the glimpse they had of getting away scot free suddenly seems elusive. Nothing Sacred

by Stathis Gourgouris

Nothing Sacred makes a bold call for reconceptualizing the projects of humanism and democracy as creative sources of emancipatory meaning, from the immediate political sphere to the farthest reaches of planetary ways of living.Restaging Aristotle’s classic notion of the “political animal” in broad historical and geographical frames, Stathis Gourgouris explores the autopoietic capacities of human-being in society, while developing new frameworks of anticolonial humanism and radical democracy as the only worthy adversaries of neoliberal capitalism. This reconfigured anthropological horizon enables us to imagine new ways of living by learning to pursue a radical politics of autonomy and a planetary vision that upholds life-affirming coexistence and equal sharing against the fetishism of hierarchy and servitude, money and technologic, sovereignty and endless growth.Written with daring, erudition, and anarchic contestation, this book seeks the political through a poetic perspective. Nothing Sacred rejects niche thinking in the academy and engages a vast domain of reflections on the problem of human-being in today’s dismal world.

Nouns and the Morphosyntax / Semantics Interface

by Laure Gardelle Elise Mignot Julie Neveux

This edited book seeks to bridge a gap in the existing literature on nouns, by exploring the exact relationship between their formal and semantic characteristics. The introductory chapter offers a thorough state of the art on the morphosyntactic and semantic angles in definitions of nouns, provides evidence of misalignments between morphosyntactic and semantic features, and argues that a multi-criterial angle is in fact inherent in the definition of the class of nouns. The following chapters bring together a representative cross-section of international-level research on the morphosyntax/semantics interface for nouns, covering a wide variety of languages from French-based creoles, German and Japanese to English, French, Italian, Russian and Uzbek. The focus of the volume is to take a special focus on the currently underestimated dynamic interplay between morphosyntax and semantics, at both language and discourse levels. It will be of interest primarily to academics (specialists of nouns, as well as anyone interested in the interplay between morphology, syntax and semantics) and graduate students in areas such as syntax, semantics, morphology, theoretical linguistics and discourse analysis.

Novel Approaches Towards Wastewater Treatment: Effective Strategies and Techniques (Springer Water)

by Gao Dawen Mohammad Nabi

This book provides an overview of new concept in sustainable technologies for wastewater treatment processes, such as annamox process, granular sludge process, membrane technology, wetlands, and sewage sludge management. With the advancement of water ecological protection and water control standard, it is the general trend to upgrade the wastewater treatment technologies. The simultaneous removal of pollutants is the key to improve the water quality and prevent its further consequences in the downstream. Therefore, it is important to explain/elaborate the new concept of technologies for wastewater treatment. Due to enormous research in the field of wastewater for pollutants removal (particularly COD and N), it is necessary to provide overview in the form of book. The content of this book is of great importance due to their suitability approach covering both environmental protection and market demands (discharge standard). The discovery of anammox process has providedlow-cost and eco-friendly means for treatment of ammonia-rich wastewater with high efficiency, and in this field we (our research group) are pioneer. Therefore, we are interested and confident to write this chapter in our book. The development of aerobic and anaerobic granular sludge process is a better replacement for activated sludge and promises sustainable wastewater treatment for at least the next century. The granular sludge process can simultaneously remove organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other pollutants from wastewater, which will be briefly discussed in this book. Wetlands as biological and microbiological approach for wastewater treatment, existing in natural or artificial wetlands and efficiently removing COD and BOD, will be explained in term of design and operation and configurations. Sewage sludge, a residue or by-product of wastewater treatment system, has considerably increased the production over the years. Sludge poses significant risk to both environmentand human health due to its content, pathogens, metal microplastic, and organic matters, if not treated properly. Therefore, its documentation in the form of book is necessary, covering pretreatment implementation, biological treatment, pathogen distribution, and directives around the world. The book primarily not only benefits students, but owing to the great importance of the new concept in wastewater treatment, it is also a valuable work for consulting engineers and other professionals who deal with wastewater treatment.

Nursing Practice during COVID-19: Preparation, Education and Support

by Kainat Alam Shipra Daniel Abdulaziz Alzahrani Waleed Hassan Almalki

This book highlights the progresses achieved in the role of nurses in the hospital, critical care unit, community field, hospital, and at home for patient care management in SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), especially in the South Asia and the Middle East. Nurses and allied health care professionals play a significant role in preventing and treating the infectious disease pandemic and epidemic that is COVID-19 and, on the front lines of treatment, they suffer an inescapable health risk due to the fact that they must live with, encounter, and accept the hazard of dealing with developing respiratory illnesses. Nurses also endure significant stress, burden, and mental health concerns as a result of worldwide respiratory epidemics. Because of this, nurses require ongoing assistance and training in order to increase their crisis preparation and efficacy while also coping with psychological issues and ensuring their own well-being. This book reflects the experience of Indianand Saudian nurses, develops on COVID-19 stress and challenges and informs on the technologies employed. Nurses' experiences caring for patients with COVID-19 around the world are scarcely documented. The research that has been done so far have mostly focused on the physical and psychological effects of stress. This expands on the role of nurse managers and hospital administration with key stakeholders emphasizing the need of providing support for nurses in their role, especially considering that the positive leadership responsibilities of nurse managers are highly regarded by nurses.

Developing upon emerging environmental humanities and multispecies anthropological theories, this book provides a fresh perspective on how we might rethink more-than-human relationality and why it is important to "nurture alternative futures." The diverse chapters examine the life trajectories of people, animals, plants, and microbes, their lived experiences and constituted relationality, offering new ways to reinterpret and reimagine a multi-species future in the current era of planetary crisis. The ethnographic case studies from around the world feature a combination of biological and cultural diversity with analyses that prioritize local and Indigenous modes of thinking. While engaging with Mongolian herders, Indigenous Yucatec Mayan, Congolese farmers, rural Pakistani donkey keepers, Australian heritage breed farmers, Croatian cheesemakers, Japanese oyster aquafarmers, Texan corn growers, Californian cannabis producers, or Hindu devotees to the Ganges River, the chapters offer a grounded anthropological understanding of imagining a future in relationality with other beings. The stories, lived experiences, and mutual worlding that this volume presents offer a portrayal of alternative forms of multispecies coexistence, rather than an anthropocentric future.
