The Psychiatric Consult: Navigating Challenging Treatment Plans

by Alyson Gorun Anna M. Kim Christian Umfrid Janna Gordon-Elliot

This book guides psychiatry trainees through some of the most common psychiatric consultation requests in the general medical hospital, using accessible, case-based narratives. Clinical case scenarios are used to demonstrate how to consider both medical and psychological factors involved in the consultation, and the approach to challenging interpersonal dynamics that may occur between the hospitalized patient and the primary medical team. Each case illustrates how to begin to think like a consultation-liaison psychiatrist in order to arrive at a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan in complex clinical situations. Cases unfold in real time to highlight the critical role of the psychiatrist as liaison to the patient and medical team in order to guide psychiatric management and facilitate effective communication and treatment in the hospital. In addition to clinical cases, each chapter features a concise list of strategies to identify and address patient symptoms and behaviors, interpersonal dynamics, and barriers to care that arise in the hospital. The Psychiatric Consult features resident-specific recommendations and a case-based format that make it a unique, realistic, and engaging learning tool.

Reprogramming the Brain: A Guide to the Future of the Brain and Neuromodulation by a Patient and his Doctor

by Benjamin Stecher Alfonso Fasano

In June 2021, Doctor and Patient decided that time had come to surgically implant two six-inch-long metal alloy spikes all the way through Ben’s brain. It was felt that the medications Ben was taking to control his Parkinson’s disease had become unmanageable. Back then, Ben was taking about 20 different pills a day. Each pill, if it absorbed properly, would activate the dopamine pathways in his brain and induce uncontrollable writhing movements that would last for about an hour. He would then get about 20 minutes where he’d feel somewhat normal before the slowness and tremor kicked in again. So, he’d take another pill and the cycle would repeat. After months of adjusting his medication and finding just the right settings on his deep brain stimulator, it was decided, for the first time ever in a clinical trial in North America, to flip on the adaptive settings. This is the story of how that decision was made and what happened next.

A Democratic Approach to Religion News: Christianity and Islam in the British and Turkish Press

by Ahmed Topkev

This book introduces the first systematic and unified four-dimension democratic approach to newspaper religion reporting. It explores the coverage of faith, with a particular focus on Christianity and Islam, in the British and Turkish national press. The results of framing analysis, conducted through content analysis of 1,022 news articles, reveal that, in both countries, alongside the contrasting portrayals of the minority religions, even the dominant religions had a disproportioned employment of the four dimensions – spiritual, world life, political, and conflict. It contributes to scholarship not only empirically but also theoretically and methodologically, with its theoretical and methodological contribution surpassing its empirical findings. As such, it will transcend geographical and temporal boundaries, making it appealing and relevant to an international audience of academics, professionals, and students in the fields of journalism, religion, democracy, media, communication, society, and culture, as well as individuals from various backgrounds.

Artificial Misinformation: Exploring Human-Algorithm Interaction Online

by Donghee Shin

This book serves as a guide to understanding the dynamics of AI in human contexts with a specific focus on the generation, sharing, and consumption of misinformation online. How do humans and AI interact? How is AI shaping our understanding of ourselves and our societies? What are the interaction mechanisms that govern how humans and algorithms contribute to misinformation online? And how do we bridge the gap between ethical considerations and practical realities to make responsible, reliable systems? Exploring these questions, the book empowers humans to make AI design choices that allow them meaningful control over AI and the online sphere. Calling for an interdisciplinary approach toward human-misinformation algorithmic interaction that focuses on building methods and tools that robustly deal with complex psychological/social phenomena, the book offers a compelling insight into the future of AI-based society.

Hadamard Products of Projective Varieties (Frontiers in Mathematics)

by Cristiano Bocci Enrico Carlini

This monograph deals with the Hadamard products of algebraic varieties. A typical subject of study in Algebraic Geometry are varieties constructed from other geometrical objects. The most well-known example is constituted by the secant varieties, which are obtained through the construction of the join of two algebraic varieties, which, in turn, is based on the operation of summing two vectors. However, other constructions are possible through a change of the basic operation. One remarkable case is based on the Hadamard product of two vectors. While secant varieties of algebraic varieties have been studied extensively and systematically, the same is not yet true for the Hadamard products of algebraic varieties. This monograph aims to bridge this gap in the literature. The topic is presented in a self-contained manner, and it is accessible to all readers with sound knowledge of Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry. Both experienced researchers and students can profit from this monograph, which will guide them through the subject. The foundational aspects of the Hadamard products of algebraic varieties are covered and some connections both within and outside Algebraic Geometry are presented. The theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the subject are considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the results presented. Thus, this monograph will also be useful to researchers in other fields, such as Algebraic Statistics, since it provides several algebraic and geometric results on such products.

Children and Young People’s Digital Lifeworlds: Domestication, Mediation, and Agency (Global Transformations in Media and Communication Research - A Palgrave and IAMCR Series)

by Chikezie E. Uzuegbunam

This book explores the ways in which adolescents in Nigeria domesticate technology and the role of digital gatekeepers such as parents, guardians, and teachers in their digital lifeworlds. Using a child-centred framework, what emerges is a rounded and textured analysis of how technology fits into pivotal aspects of the lives of teenagers. Here, teens are understood as ‘actors’ rather than just users of media and technology. The digital lifeworlds of young people in advanced economies of the Minority World are well researched. In contrast, research focusing on pre-teens’ and teenagers’ digital practices and participation in Majority World such as Africa, is still fundamentally narrow. The book is relevant to fields like sociology, media studies, youth studies, mobile media studies, African studies, and global media studies.

Academics in a Century of Displacement: The Global History and Politics of Protecting Endangered Scholars (Migrationsgesellschaften)

by Leyla Dakhli Pascale Laborier Frank Wolff

‘Endangered scholars’ is a recently highly relevant, yet historical notion. Embedded in the greater history of the 20th and 21st centuries, it captures the phenomenon of scholars who, after years of intellectual work and integration in their societies of origin, are forced to seek rescue in foreign host societies. The pressing urgency of the topic thus has an important historical background. From escaping Russian intellectuals after 1917 to the protection of Jewish refugees during World War II, Algerian intellectuals in contemporary history, or persecuted academics from Turkey today: Over the course of about a century, categories of inclusion, transnational relations, and forms of agency of scholars at risk remained surprisingly stable (and hence diachronously and synchronously comparable) while they also adjusted flexibly to contemporary conditions. This collective volume carves out this historical development and its recent expressions. It brings together researchers in a vivid yet largely unconnected field of migration and refugee studies. By developing a complex image of the origin of the global history and politics of protecting endangered scholars from the early 20th century until today, the book contributes to research on academics in exile as a part of refugee research, migration studies, the history of higher education, and the contemporary history of societies. The interdisciplinary volume explores the phenomenon as a historical, political and legal subject, brings together scholars of forced migration and intellectual studies, and includes currently affected scholars into those reflections.

Nested Simulations: Theory and Application (Mathematische Optimierung und Wirtschaftsmathematik | Mathematical Optimization and Economathematics)

by Maximilian Klein

Maximilian Klein analyses nested Monte Carlo simulations for the approximation of conditional expected values. Thereby, the book deals with two general risk functional classes for conditional expected values, on the one hand the class of moment-based estimators (notable examples are the probability of a large loss or the lower partial moments) and on the other hand the class of quantile-based estimators. For both functional classes, the almost sure convergence of the respective estimator is proven and the underlying convergence speed is quantified. In particular, the class of quantile-based estimators has important practical consequences especially for life insurance companies since the Value-at-Risk falls into this class and thus covers the solvency capital requirement problem. Furthermore, a novel non parametric confidence interval method for quantiles is presented which takes the additional noise of the inner simulation into account.

EssensWert - Werte als multidisziplinärer Sammelbegriff im Kontext von Ernährung: Eine Literaturarbeit (essentials)

by Karolin Höhl Jana Dreyer Silke Lichtenstein

Managing Technology from Laboratory to Marketplace: Cheating the Valley of Death (Management for Professionals)

by Sanford L. Moskowitz Chris Erickson

Managing Technology from Laboratory to Marketplace outlines the process of getting innovative research out of the laboratory and into the market, a path which is often fraught with challenges. Many research projects meet their end as they attempt to cross this so-called “valley of death"--the period between the research phase of a project and the point when the new product or process emerging from that research becomes commercialized and enters the market. Firstly, this book aims to better understand how and why projects succeed in entering the market while others falter. Second, it uses these insights to guide researchers to optimize their chances of successfully making that transition, and finding their place in the market. The book primarily uses case studies from the field of advanced materials, but can be used by any researcher making the transition from laboratory to marketplace.

Gesellschaftliche Dynamiken depressiver Erkrankungen bei älteren Menschen: Eine Analyse stressbezogener Effekte in europäischen Wohlfahrtsregimen (BestMasters)

by Christopher Etter
