English Romantic Verse

by David Wright

English Romantic poetry from its beginnings and its flowering to the first signs of its decadence. Nearly all the famous piéces de résistance will be found here - 'Intimations of Immortality', 'The Ancient Mariner', 'The Tyger', excerpts from 'Don Juan' - as well as some less familiar poems. As far as possible the poets are arranged in chronological order, and their poems in order of composition, beginning with eighteenth-century precursors such as Gray, Cowper, Burns and Chatterton. Naturally most space has been given over to the major Romantics - Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Clare and Keats - although their successors, poets such as Beddoes and Poe, are included too, as well as early poems by Tennyson and Browning. In an excellent introduction David Wright discusses the Romantics as a historical phenomenon, and points out their central ideals and themes.

The Way of Our People: Weekly Inspiration for American Indians in Recovery

by Donald Richard Wright

These inspirational meditations, prayers, and stories were written by an Ojibwe Elder and alcohol and drug counselor to speak directly to American Indians about their everyday experience of recovery from alcoholism. A combination of Ojibwe and Twelve Step spiritual principles and practices, along with stories from Indians struggling with recovery, create an authentic experience of the challenges and rewards of living sober. People from all tribes will recognize spiritual laws like Honesty, Sharing, Kindness, and Strength, along with traditional rituals such as offering tobacco with prayers, and can apply teachings from their own culture to these messages. The importance of reliance on the Creator, the wisdom of Elders, and sober community support inform these writings to provide strength while counteracting the harsh realities of poverty, violence, and broken relationships fueled by alcohol abuse. A meditation, seven daily prayers, and selected stories “from the rooms” of AA meetings are presented for each of the 52 weeks of the year, providing a weekly and daily source of inspiration and hope.

Is it really the oil of the twenty-first century? Will we all soon be fighting over it, or can it lead countries into co-operation rather than conflict? In this enthralling voyage of discovery, Rupert Wright sets out to discover exactly what water is and why it plays such an important role in history, culture, art and literature. Six Facets Of Light

by Ann Wroe

'She's a genius, I believe, because she lights up every subject she touches.' Hilary Mantel A Spectator Book of the YearGoethe claimed to know what light was. Galileo and Einstein both confessed they didn't. On the essential nature of light, and how it operates, the scientific jury is still out. There is still time, therefore, to listen to painters and poets on the subject. They, after all, spend their lives pursuing light and trying to tie it down.Six Facets of Light is a series of meditations on this most elusive and alluring feature of human life. Set mostly on the Downs and coastline of East Sussex, the most luminous part of England, it interweaves a walker's experiences of light in Nature with the observations, jottings and thoughts of a dozen writers and painters - and some scientists - who have wrestled to define and understand light. From Hopkins to Turner, Coleridge to Whitman, Fra Angelico to Newton, Ravilious to Dante, the mystery of light is teased out and pondered on. Some of the results are surprising.By using mostly notebooks and sketchbooks, this book becomes a portrait of the transitoriness, randomness, swiftness, frustrations and quicksilver beauty that are the essence of light. It is a work to be enjoyed, pondered over, engaged with, provoked by; to be packed in the rucksack of every walker heading for the sea or the hills, or to be opened to bring that outside radiance within four dark town walls.Lifescapes by Ann Wroe is coming in August 2023.

Data Mining with Python: Theory, Application, and Case Studies (Chapman & Hall/CRC The Python Series)

by Di Wu

Data is everywhere and it’s growing at an unprecedented rate. But making sense of all that data is a challenge. Switching Diplomatic Recognition Between Taiwan and China: Economic and Social Impact (Routledge Research on Taiwan Series)

by Wu, Edited by Chien-Huei

This book examines the economic and social impacts of switching diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China, and vice versa, and investigates how China achieves its foreign policy objective of dissuading Taiwan’s diplomatic partners and other third parties from engaging with Taiwan.Highlighting the critical regions of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Oceania, where the diplomatic competition between Taiwan and China is fierce, the contributions to this book analyze China’s promises of economic benefits, threats of economic coercion and the perils of its foreign aid to the countries in these regions in pursuit of its anti-Taiwan policy. In addition to the competition of formal diplomatic ties, it also examines how existing informal relations have influenced Taiwan’s increasing interactions with Central and Eastern European countries. Finally, the book explores how Taiwan’s advantage in technology sectors has successfully been translated into economic leverage for Taiwan’s international diplomacy.Built upon the interdisciplinary expertise and collaborative efforts of 14 international scholars, this book will be a valuable resource to scholars and students of Taiwan studies, China studies and international relations.

Nutrition and Metabolism of Dogs and Cats (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1446)

by Guoyao Wu

This book provides new knowledge about the nutrition and metabolism, as well as the roles of nutrients in the immunity, health, and management of companion animals (dogs and cats). The domestic dog (facultative carnivore) and the domestic cat (obligate carnivore) have evolved differentially in their digestive tract, nutrition, metabolism, chemical sensing, and feeding behavior. These animals have been human companions for at least 12,000 and 9,000 years, respectively, and continue to contribute to the mental health and well-being of children, adolescents, and adults. Both dogs and cats have become increasingly popular in many countries and worldwide over the past decades. Comprehensive update about how the animals utilize dietary nutrients for optimum growth, development, and health is beneficial for their owners, as well as students and researchers. Chapter 4: Characteristics of Nutrition and Metabolism in Dogs and Cats is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License

Material Flows with Nexus of Regional Socioeconomic System (Industrial Ecology and Environmental Management #3)

by Huijun Wu

This book introduces and integrates material flows with their nexuses in the regional socioeconomic system, to explore the environmental impacts of the system. Currently, many related studies conducted on global and country levels focus on the direct material flows including material inputs and outputs of the socioeconomic system. While they seldom consider the indirect flows derived from the nexus relationships among these materials, especially on the regional levels. This book concerns the regional differences and highlights the integration of material flows as well as their nexuses in the regional socioeconomic system. It tries to systematically analyze the environmental impacts of the system, clearly explain the relationship between socioeconomic system and natural environment, and provide the reference to achieve the sustainable development for different regions.
