Corruption, Ethics, and Governance in South Africa: Issues, Cases, and Interventions (ISSN)

by Modimowabarwa Kanyane

This book assesses landmark empirical studies, state capture concerns, corruption, and fraud in South Africa’s public sector and thereby reflect on issues of accountability and ethics as cornerstones of governance.Bringing together some of the best minds about corruption, ethics, and governance from a multidisciplinary perspective, the book pushes critical thinking to interrogate interventions that could stamp out and stop the rot of corruption in society. The book investigates the behaviours of officials and politicians engaging in acts of corruption and considers how state institutions have been captured and corrupted by these people. Considering South Africa’s historical and regional context, the book also considers the role of watchdogs, auditors, and public opinion. In suggesting mechanisms for combating and preventing corruption, the book ultimately advocates for long-lasting preventive interventions instead of current short-lived and costly approaches to combating corruption.Combining original case studies, empirical work, and some comparisons in Zimbabwe and Botswana with South Africa, this book will be of interest to students, researchers, and policymakers working on corruption, ethics, and governance from the context of public administration and law.

The Inhuman Empire: Wildlife, Colonialism, Culture (Empire and the Making of the Modern World, 1650-2000)

by Sadhana Naithani

This book is a study of selected texts of British writings on Indian wildlife published between 1860 and 1960.Set in the context of British colonial rule in India, this book also reflects on similar situations across the British Empire and other colonial empires. The destruction of wildlife in the making of empires is a subject not yet fully explored in scholarship. This book aims to speak to global concerns regarding the extinction of several species and shows that the crisis has international roots. The Inhuman Empire breaks new grounds as it juxtaposes colonial narratives to folk narratives. These two types of narratives treat nonhuman animals very differently – folk narrative considers them sentient beings, while colonial narratives see them as ‘game’ and do not care for their sentience. Both types of narratives are further evaluated with reference to the contemporary position of natural sciences regarding animal sentience and of anthropologists and philosophers regarding the relationship between nature and culture. Analyzing colonial accounts of hunting, the author looks at the pain and suffering of nonhuman animals and combines statistics alongside narratives of British writers, Indian populace and nonhuman animals in order to show narratives' reflect and impact reality. This book will be of great value to those interested in Animal Studies, Folkloristics, the history of Colonialism and India.

National Power and International Geostructure (Contributions to International Relations)

by Daniel Morales Ruvalcaba Alberto Rocha Valencia

This book addresses three innovative aspects for the study of International Relations: first, proposes a novel theoretical-methodological framework for the study of national power, and based on this, a quantitative analysis technique is formulated that allows us to study the evolution of state power over almost five decades. Second, states play a fundamental role in the international system, which is why the study of their roles in the world cannot be limited to old, insufficient, and contradictory categorizations. Having new categories of states becomes an even more urgent task in the rapidly changing international order than it is today. This book proposes nine categories of powers and states that cover all the countries that currently exist. Third, the international geostructure of world power is proposed, which represents a new theoretical notion that helps to explain how the international insertion of states and their possibilities of action are conditioned by the unequal distribution of national power and by their structural positioning in the international system. This book is for all students of International Relations, academics, and people who want to understand national power as a fundamental factor in relations between countries.

Verhaltensstörungen bei Demenzerkrankungen: Leitfaden für Diagnostik und Therapie

by Robert Haußmann Susan Ebert

Bayesian Filter Design for Computational Medicine: A State-Space Estimation Framework

by Dilranjan S. Wickramasuriya Rose T. Faghih

This book serves as a tutorial that explains how different state estimators (Bayesian filters) can be built when all or part of the observations are binary. The book begins by briefly motivating the need for point process state estimation followed by an introduction to the overall approach, as well as some basic background material in statistics that are necessary for the equation derivations that are utilized in subsequent chapters. The subsequent chapters focus on different state-space models and provide step-by-step explanations on how to build the corresponding Bayesian filters. Each of the main chapters that describes a single state-space model also describes the corresponding MATLAB code examples at the end. Descriptions are also provided regarding the code. The code contains both simulated and experimental data examples. All the experimental data examples are taken from real-world experiments. The experiments involve the recording of skin conductance, heartrate and blood cortisol data. A MATLAB toolbox of code examples that cover the different filters covered in the book is included in a companion webpage. The book is primarily intended for graduate students in either electrical engineering or biomedical engineering who will be beginning research in state estimation related to point process data or mixed data (i.e., point processes and other types of observations). The book can also be used by practicing researchers who measure skin conductance and heart rate or pulsatile hormones in their own work (e.g. in psychology). This is an open access book.

The Enigma of Metaphor: Philosophy, Pragmatics, Cognitive Science (UNIPA Springer Series)

by Stefana Garello

This book deals with the complicated realm of metaphor, an enigma deeply embedded in language and cognition. There has been much discussion of metaphor in the past, but it was characterized by a certain fragmentation and lacked interdisciplinarity. In this field of study, the dominance of Cognitive Linguistics, epitomized by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, has caused the marginalization of alternative perspectives. To fill this gap, this book embarks on an interdisciplinary journey, inviting different theoretical frameworks to engage in a fruitful dialog. It navigates the labyrinth of theories and illuminates the nuanced facets of metaphor. At the center of this exploration are three central questions: whether metaphor belongs to the realm of style or thought, the intricate interplays between literal and metaphorical meanings and the integration of propositional and non-propositional elements in the construction of metaphorical meaning.Through a careful blend of historical analysis and contemporary hypotheses, the book unravels the complexities of metaphor, considering its evolution across the centuries and the myriad interpretations it evokes. By bringing together work from different fields, it ultimately shows that a definition of metaphor is theory-dependent and that metaphor is not a natural kind, but a complex and multifaceted philosophical concept whose study requires a multi-dimensional approach that transcends narrow theoretical boundaries. In this way, the book explores these considerations’ most important philosophical consequences and offers new insights into this fundamental aspect of human language.

Ireland's Long Economic Boom: The Celtic Tiger Economy, 1986–2007 (Palgrave Studies in Economic History)

by Eoin O'Malley

This Open Access book examines the long economic boom experienced in Ireland between the late 1980s and 2007, analysing why this boom occurred. The book situates Ireland as a relative latecomer to economic development, with specific challenges and advantages inherent to this position. It discusses the risks involved in remaining reliant on foreign companies, exploring how in Ireland’s case the rapidly growing economy required active, interventionist and imaginative policy measures rather than relying primarily on free market forces. The book also offers an estimation of the value of the net foreign earnings associated with different categories of exports after deducting the profit outflows and payments for imported inputs, revealing a number of findings about the importance of Irish indigenous companies and services during this time. It shows that Irish indigenous companies, assisted by industrial policy measures, played a significant part, as did the services sector, alongside the more visible and widely recognised role of foreign multinationals in high-tech manufacturing. Offering fresh insights and analyses more than 15 years after the long boom ended at the precipice of the global financial crisis, this book will be a useful resource for economic historians, scholars of political economy and macroeconomic policy, as well as those interested in modern Irish history more broadly.

Effective Non-Hermiticity and Topology in Markovian Quadratic Bosonic Dynamics (Springer Theses)

by Vincent Paul Flynn

This thesis provides an in-depth investigation of effective non-Hermiticity and topology in many-mode, non-interacting, bosonic systems. It also establishes the extent to which one must move beyond the Hamiltonian, closed-system setting, in order to uncover signatures of genuine symmetry-protected topological (SPT) physics in "free" (mean-field) bosons. While SPT phases of free fermionic matter and their associated zero-energy boundary-localized modes have been thoroughly explored, similar physics in free bosonic systems still remains elusive. No fermionic counterpart exists for the distinctive dynamical behavior that arises from the effective non-Hermiticity, intrinsic even at equilibrium, to bosonic Hamiltonians. Therefore, a much needed paradigm shift is required to address major conceptual roadblocks in the search for SPT bosonic phases. The analysis within develops, in particular, the notion of topological metastability in quadratic bosonic systems subject to Markovian dissipation. The resulting dynamical paradigm was found to be characterized by both a sharp separation between transient and asymptotic dynamics and non-trivial topological invariants. It also features long-lived boundary-localized "Majorana boson" and "Dirac boson" modes, which realize tight bosonic analogues to the edge modes characteristic of fermionic SPT phases. This comprehensive look into non-interacting bosonic systems breaks important new ground for re-imagining quantum phenomena beyond equilibrium, with novel applications in quantum science.
