Originally published in 1983, Women's Welfare, Women's Rights opted explicitly for an amalgam of these strategies. The primary focus of this title is women as a group and most of the contributors, who work from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives, take a particular policy area and try to see what is happening to women within it, concentrating chiefly on women’s experience in the family and in paid employment.At the time opportunities for reading about women and social policy were limited so this book was intended to be helpful in redressing the balance. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Originally published in 1980, Cognitive Processes in Choice and Decision Behavior contains papers that explore the reasons why these changes had come about and discuss the future directions to which they pointed. It was clear at the time that research in behavioral decision theory was changing dramatically. The chapters in this book represent a good assessment of the reasons the changes were coming about and some of the merits and problems of the directions in which it was moving. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Slow Grows the Child: Psychosocial Aspects of Growth Delay (Psychology Revivals)

UnderwoodOriginally published in 1986, Slow Grows the Child came out of a symposium held in Washington D.C. in 1984 which brought together researchers and practitioners in the field producing recommendations for future research. It was the beginning of an informal network among researchers. In the 1970s and 1980s, the odds that a short-statured person would be socially and emotionally fulfilled were judged by some to be not very good. There was a pervasive belief that equated tallness with strength and shortness with weakness and a lack of social desirability. The recognition that delays in growth could be modified by medical therapies had led to increased awareness of psychological and social effects on short stature children. There had been little consensus about how best to measure the psychological and social adjustment of short individuals. It was hoped this title would advance understanding of the social and psychological experience of growth delay and increase the odds that medical and psychological intervention would produce the most desirable outcome.

The child and maternal welfare movement had a significant material and ideological effect on women and it is therefore important to understand the mechanisms which structured and controlled it.Originally published in 1980, The Politics of Motherhood asks why child and maternal welfare policy took the particular form that it did during the Edwardian and inter-war years and in doing so brings together a number of important themes relating to women and social policy. By taking into account not only the professionals involved, but also the mothers themselves – their reactions to the policies implemented and their own demands for change, the study brings to the forefront such themes as the relation between health and the family economy, the control of health care and the control of reproduction. Many issues arising from these themes were of present-day interest at the time, and still are today, such as the medicalisation of childbirth which has involved a loss of control by women over its management. This study illustrates the importance of stopping to examine the pedigree of our social policies and the need to ask whether a policy developed under one specific set of social, economic and political conditions can continue to be relevant in a markedly different situation.

However, his texts bear the imprint of contemporary dominant ideologies and discourses of the period. Comparing Lawrence’s texts to various major and minor contemporary novels, journal articles, political pamphlets and history books, this book aims to demonstrate that Lawrence’s texts are ambivalent: his texts harbour the dynamism of conflicting power struggles between the subversive and the reactionary. For example, in some apparently apolitical texts such as The White Peacock and Movements in European History, reactionary ideologies and wartime propaganda are embedded. Some texts like Lady Chatterley’s Lover are intended to be a radical critique of the period wherein it was composed, but they also bear discernible traces of the contemporary frame of reference that they intend to subvert. Focusing on Lawrence’s stories and novels set in the mining countryside and the works composed under the impact of the First World War, this book establishes that Lawrence’s texts in fact consist of multiple layers that are often in conflict with each other, serving as a testimony to the age of modernity.
