Studies in Late Antiquity (Variorum Collected Studies)

by David Neal Greenwood

Late Antiquity was an era of remarkable change as beliefs were shaped and reshaped by the competing philosophies of traditional Greco-Roman religion, Middle and Neoplatonist philosophy, and the theology of the early Church.Current narratives of both peaceful competition and violent struggle between Christianity and paganism are reductive. The research presented in this Variorum volume, originally published between 2013 and 2018 in the fields of history, divinity, and philosophy, demonstrates the complexity of the age and provides a more complete picture of major actors including the emperor Julian, Porphyry of Tyre, and Celsus. From the second to the fourth centuries, these were some of the major players in attempting to define the terrain in the conflict between their philosophies and the Christian religion. While the timeframe remains consistently within the late second to the mid-fourth centuries A.D., the sources range between inscriptions, literature, and historical accounts. The particular focus is the emperor Julian (Flavius Claudius Julianus, d. 363), a figure of perennial interest, as not only the last pagan emperor, but the last anti-Christian polemicist of real significance in antiquity. This volume offers a new perspective on Julian, bringing together research from ancient history, Neoplatonist philosophy, and patristic theology, and will be useful to students and scholars alike.

Studies on Moral Competence: Proposals and Dilemmas for Discussion

by Patricia Unger Raphael Bataglia Cristiane Paiva Alves Elvira Maria P. Pimentel Ribeiro Parente

This book shows how to use discussions of moral dilemmas as a strategy to develop moral competence in children and youth in educational environments using the Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion (KMDD). This method was developed by the German psychologist Georg Lind (1847-2021), who defines moral competence as an ability to solve problems and conflicts based on moral principles or values, through reflection, dialogue and deliberation, instead of using force, violence, deception and manipulation. According to Lind, this ability can be developed in children and youth through KMDD. The book has two parts. The first part brings together an original chapter written by Georg Lind about his decades of research on assessment and education of moral competence, and other 13 chapters written by different authors analyzing the theoretical foundations of moral development and moral competence as psychological constructs and their applications to different aspects of social life,as well as empirical research analyzing the application of different methods of dilemma discussion in educational contexts. The second part presents 20 moral dilemmas to be used in dilemma discussion sessions.Studies on Moral Competence: Proposals and Dilemmas for Discussion is the English edition of a book originally published in Portuguese for the Brazilian market and will be of interest to teachers and researchers interested in learning about the theoretical foundations and possible applications of an effective method to develop moral competence in educational environments. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

A Study Course In Homoeopathy

by Phyllis Speight

Some years ago Health Science Press issued a correspondence course in Homeopathy. It proved invaluable to students, providing a sound background of training in Homoeopathy. At that time graduating students sought a Diploma or Certificate, or other recognition of their new qualification. However, it was felt that a Diploma could not be awarded as such a document would have no official recognition in either the alternative or orthodox medical world and would, therefore, be of little value to the student. When the correspondence course was discontinued the remaining stock was sold as a book with the test papers cancelled. This work proved to be exceptionally popular. In view of the guidance that this book offers to the seriously interested student of Homoeopathy, the course has been revised by Phyllis Speight. This book contains twelve essential lessons and their corresponding test papers. Specimen answers at the end of the book will enable students to compare and evaluate their knowledge.

Stung with Love: Poems and Fragments of Sappho

by Sappho

More or less 150 years after Homer's Iliad, Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos, west off the coast of what is present Turkey. Little remains today of her writings, which are said to have filled nine papyrus rolls in the great library at Alexandria some 500 years after her death. The surviving texts consist of a lamentably small and fragmented body of lyric poetry - among them poems of invocation, desire, spite, celebration, resignation and remembrance - that nevertheless enables us to hear the living voice of the poet Plato called the tenth Muse. This is a new translation of her surviving poetry.
