Madame Walker Theatre Center: An Indianapolis Treasure (Images of America)

by A'Lelia Bundles

As they watched construction of the block-long flatiron building brick by brick throughout 1927, African American residents of Indianapolis could scarcely contain their pride. This new headquarters of the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, with its terra-cotta trimmed facade, was to be more than corporate offices and a factory for what then was one of America's most successful black businesses. In fact, it was designed as "a city within a city," with an African Art Deco theater, ballroom, restaurant, drugstore, beauty salon, beauty school, and medical offices. Generations of African American families met for Sunday dinner at the Coffee Pot, enjoyed first-run movies and live performances in the Walker Theatre, and hosted dances in the Casino. Today, this National Historic Landmark is an arts center anchoring the Indiana Avenue Cultural District.

On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker

by A'Lelia Bundles

Now a Netflix series starring Octavia Spencer, Self Made (formerly titled On Her Own Ground) is the first full-scale biography of &“one of the great success stories of American history&” (The Philadelphia Inquirer), Madam C.J. Walker—the legendary African American entrepreneur and philanthropist—by her great-great-granddaughter, A&’Lelia Bundles. The daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Sarah Breedlove—who would become known as Madam C. J. Walker—was orphaned at seven, married at fourteen, and widowed at twenty. She spent the better part of the next two decades laboring as a washerwoman for $1.50 a week. Then—with the discovery of a revolutionary hair care formula for black women—everything changed. By her death in 1919, Walker managed to overcome astonishing odds: building a storied beauty empire from the ground up, amassing wealth unprecedented among black women, and devoting her life to philanthropy and social activism. Along the way, she formed friendships with great early-twentieth-century political figures such as Ida B. Wells, Mary McLeod Bethune, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Booker T. Washington.

Protocol Design and Analysis for Cooperative Wireless Networks

by Wei Song Peijian Ju A-Long Jin

This book focuses on the design and analysis of protocols for cooperative wireless networks, especially at the medium access control (MAC) layer and for crosslayer design between the MAC layer and the physical layer. It highlights two main points that are often neglected in other books: energy-efficiency and spatial random distribution of wireless devices. Effective methods in stochastic geometry for the design and analysis of wireless networks are also explored. After providing a comprehensive review of existing studies in the literature, the authors point out the challenges that are worth further investigation. Then, they introduce several novel solutions for cooperative wireless network protocols that reduce energy consumption and address spatial random distribution of wireless nodes. For each solution, the book offers a clear system model and problem formulation, details of the proposed cooperative schemes, comprehensive performance analysis, and extensive numerical and simulation results that validate the analysis and examine the performance under various conditions. The last section of this book reveals several potential directions for the research on cooperative wireless networks that deserve future exploration. Researchers, professionals, engineers, and consultants in wireless communication and mobile networks will find this book valuable. It is also helpful for technical staff in mobile network operations, wireless equipment manufacturers, wireless communication standardization bodies, and governmental regulation agencies.

Double-pass Optical Quality Analysis for the Clinical Practice of Cataract

by A-Yong Yu

This book introduces the principle, main parameters, acquisition mode and operation procedure of Optical Quality Analysis System II (OQAS II) based on double-pass technology. OQAS II is increasingly used in the diagnosis and assessment of ocular diseases, especially for cataract. In this book, the clinical practice of OQAS II in the field of refractive cataract surgery is emphasized, including the preoperative/postoperative evaluation of visual quality, the timing of cataract surgery, the prediction of the visual quality after cataract surgery and doctor-patient communication. We hope the book provides a reference for the clinical application of the OQAS II in the field of cataract and helps to form the worldwide standard specification to a certain extent.

Politics and Cultural Nativism in 1970s Taiwan: Youth, Narrative, Nationalism (Global Chinese Culture)

by A-chin Hsiau

In the aftermath of 1949, Taiwan’s elites saw themselves as embodying China in exile both politically and culturally. The island—officially known as the Republic of China—was a temporary home to await the reconquest of the mainland. Taiwan, not the People’s Republic, represented China internationally until the early 1970s. Yet in recent decades Taiwan has increasingly come to see itself as a modern nation-state.A-chin Hsiau traces the origins of Taiwanese national identity to the 1970s, when a surge of domestic dissent and youth activism transformed society, politics, and culture in ways that continue to be felt. After major diplomatic setbacks at the beginning of the 1970s posed a serious challenge to Kuomintang authoritarian rule, a younger generation without firsthand experience of life on the mainland began openly challenging the status quo. Hsiau examines how student activists, writers, and dissident researchers of Taiwanese anticolonial movements, despite accepting Chinese nationalist narratives, began to foreground Taiwan’s political and social past and present. Their activism, creative work, and historical explorations played pivotal roles in bringing to light and reshaping indigenous and national identities. In so doing, Hsiau contends, they laid the basis for Taiwanese nationalism and the eventual democratization of Taiwan.Offering bracing new perspectives on nationalism, democratization, and identity in Taiwan, this book has significant implications spanning sociology, history, political science, and East Asian studies.

How Young Are You?: Understanding Psychological Age, Time, Causometry, to Create Meaningful, Harmonious, Productive Lives

by A. A Kronik

“His work is truly revolutionary. He has taken the most important of existential experiences and made them transparent for self-growth and research.” —Linda Berg-Cross, PhD, ABPP, Professor of Psychology, Howard UniversityThe main purpose of this research-based, self-help book is to introduce the goal-and-causal theory of “Psychological Time,” and to help you calculate your “Psychological Age”—that is, how old you feel, based on significant events in your life. You can also learn how to lower your psychological age (feel younger), using past experiences to move into the future, rejuvenating the mind for more satisfying personal growth, productivity, and happiness. We humans created the convention of Time—hours, days, millennia. But we also created “Psychological Time,” which we can compress (to survive an interminable wait, for example), or expand (to luxuriate in pleasure). So fully-integrated into our brain is this “Psychological Time” that, as part of the illusion, we can lose touch with “real” chronological time altogether, and even change the sequence of past events to contradict or override our otherwise communal understanding of the world. In this book, you will generate “Causograms,” a kind of map that graphically represents your perception of the cause-and-effect and goal-based connections that your mind naturally makes between life experiences. These include, but are not limited to achievements, memories triggered by new experiences, and expectations based on prior accomplishments. This process allows you to re-examine the relation between life events, goals and personal interactions, then compare your resulting “Psychological Age” to your chronological age. “What a wonderful approach to the human life cycle. I am enjoying it immensely.” —H. Keith H. Brodie, MD, James B. Duke Professor of Psychiatry, President Emeritus, Duke University

Fundamentals of the Theory of Metals

by A. A. Abrikosov

This comprehensive primer by a Nobel Physicist covers the electronic spectra of metals, electrical and thermal conductivities, galvanomagnetic and thermoelectrical phenomena, the behavior of metals in high-frequency fields, sound absorption, and Fermi-liquid phenomena. Addressing in detail all aspects of the energy spectra of electrons in metals and the theory of superconductivity, it continues to be a valuable resource for the field almost thirty years after its initial publication. Targeted at undergraduate students majoring in physics as well as graduate and postgraduate students, research workers, and teachers, this is an essential reference on the topic of electromagnetism and superconductivity in metals.
