International Trade, Regulation and the Global Economy: The Impact of Anti-Competitive Market Distortions (Routledge Focus on Economics and Finance)

by Shanker Singham

The barriers between the voluntary exchange of willing buyers and willing sellers have progressively been reduced through trade liberalisation, competition and better property rights protection. However, the world has done significantly less well in reducing barriers involving competition and property rights. This book analyses how the economic prosperity which was promised has been undermined by these "Anti-Competitive Market Distortions", which damage international trade as well as domestic conditions of competition and, ultimately, GDP per capita. This book first describes the nature of the Anti-Competitive Market Distortions problem and how it has impacted countries since the 1990s. It also highlights a gap in policymaking, detailing how Anti-Competitive Market Distortions have existed in an ungoverned space in both international trade and competition theory. The book also explores the various models of the impact of Anti-Competitive Market Distortions, including the original econometric model to measure the quantum of distortion – and three new variations on this – as well as an agency-based Model. Finally, drawing on techniques from probabilistic methods and quantum mechanics, the book examines the possibility of a probabilistic model to assess the real impact of Anti-Competitive Market Distortions on GDP per capita growth around the world in a far more dynamic and real-time sense than has been possible thus far. This book will be invaluable to academics and students of trade, competition and international relations in both the legal and economic disciplines.

International Transfer of Dual Modes of Vocational Education and Training: National Recontextualization and Local Enactment (Oxford Studies in Comparative Education)

by Matthias Pilz Philipp Gonon Oscar Valiente Srabani Maitra

This volume looks at the recontextualization that results from the international transfer of dual modes of vocational education and training (VET), typically focused on apprenticeships, in their countries’ new nation-specific and local context, highlighting the absorptive capacities and the different modes of duality in VET.Combining perspectives and data from a truly international set of contributors, the book identifies diverse translations and enactments of dual modes of vocational education and training. Using a case study approach to understand why and how education policies travel across different world regions, and how they mutate in such processes, the book ultimately provides empirical insights into the dynamics involved in the dissemination and recontextualization of global education policies. Chapters discuss local enactments, such as the views of apprentices in two states in Mexico, and an in-depth look at the Industrial Training Institute (based on the Dual System of Training) located in Gujarat, India. Further case studies stretch across the globe from contexts as diverse as China, Spain and Canada, and refer to countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Botswana and Namibia. This book will be of use to scholars, postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of international and comparative education, vocational education and training, and adult education and lifelong learning more broadly. Policy makers working in international policy transfer may also benefit from this volume.

Internet Popular Culture and (Everyday) Politics: Methodological & Ethical Critiques from Southeast Asia

by Crystal Abidin Natalie Pang

This edited collection considers how scholars conduct research on (everyday) politics in Southeast Asia via networks of internet popular culture. This includes artefacts, networks, groups, and cultures that are specific to Southeast Asian online practices, and that seek to represent, advocate for, provoke, or question how citizens "do" politics online. In the Southeast Asia region in particular, these behind-the-scenes minutiae of everyday decisions are all the more under-valued when researchers have been taught, conditioned, or cautioned to tiptoe around taboo or political topics implicitly policed by states and governments. The combination of media regimes with limited press freedoms, the employment of sedition acts against citizens, and the need to be strategic to secure state and industry funding for research have pressured or motivated scholars to strategically obscure certain research anecdotes in favour of a smoother publishing journey and/or posterity. As such, this collection serves as a sounding board and collection of reflections on what it really looks like to conduct research on everyday politics online in the Southeast Asian region, while navigating innovative media methods, negotiating inter-disciplinary gatekeeping, demands of publishing in tiered journals, and the tensions around legitimising one's methodological choices. This collection features four accounts of scholars contemplating the methodological and ethical conundrums when conducting research on Southeast Asian internet popular culture and everyday politics. This book will be useful for the readers in the disciplines of anthropology, Asian studies, communications, cultural studies, media studies, and science and technology studies.

In this book, Anna Maria Loiacono introduces the reader to the origins of Interpersonal Psychoanalysis, its most important concepts, and their clinical value.Throughout the chapters, Loiacono navigates historically through the principles of Harry Stack Sullivan, clearly and succinctly outlining the ideas of those thinkers who followed, to the latest reflections of Contemporary Interpersonal Psychoanalysis. Illustrated with case vignettes, this book addresses concepts such as dissociation, differences between splitting and dissociation, countertransference, enactments, field theory, hermeneutics, the unconscious, the unformulated experience, self-disclosure, relational and interpersonal psychoanalysis, change and the use of the therapist’s subjectivity, as they are currently considered in the interpersonal approach, seen from the perspective of Loiacono’s personal point of view and professional experience.Part of the Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis series, this book is a vital read for all analysts in practice and training, as well as psychologists and psychiatrists.

Intersectional Perspectives on Equality and Social Justice in Norwegian Higher Education (Routledge Research in Higher Education)

by Vander Tavares

Highlighting how systemic inequities in Norwegian higher education are perpetuated through colonial legacies, monocultures of knowledge, and a lack of critical engagement, this book offers an intersectional analysis that identifies issues and complexities in the domains of pedagogy, epistemology, research, curriculum, and support services.Foregrounding the voices of researchers, teacher educators, and student teachers through a variety of methodological approaches, the volume examines and critiques interconnected barriers rooted in experiences and ideologies of class, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body, language, literacy, and religion that marginalize students and scholars, particularly those with multiple minority identities. Chapters identify persistent gaps in policy and practice in the experiences of students and scholars, including those from the Global South, despite growing equity, diversity, and inclusion mandates and discourses promoted by Norwegian higher education. To address such challenges, this volume advocates for decolonization, pluriversality, and systemic changes in higher education and academic practices through intersectionality to create a more inclusive and equitable higher education landscape.Advocating for the need to ethically humanize, diversify and decolonize Norwegian higher education, this book will be of interest to researchers, scholars and postgraduate students in the fields of higher education, multicultural education, and sociology of education. Policymakers and administrators may also benefit from the volume.

Intertwining Criminal Justice and Immigration Control in the EU (Routledge Studies in Criminal Justice, Borders and Citizenship)

by Valsamis Mitsilegas Niovi Vavoula Evangelia Lilian Tsourdi

This book offers a contemporary understanding of the state of the art of "crimmigration" with a focus on the European Union and challenges this paradigm of intersecting criminal justice and immigration control. The contributions to this book explore the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of EU and national policies intertwining criminal and migration law, as well as their practical use (and abuse). They analyse migration control through criminal law from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, incorporating insights from law, philosophy, and criminology. The book revisits fundamental questions on the suitability of criminal law to regulate and govern migration and provides insights as to whether and how the law should be amended to limit the negative consequences of the criminalisation of migration. The authors critique the key legal challenges crimmigration poses in terms of legality, fundamental rights, and rule of law adherence. Finally, this volume outlines, through concrete examples, how criminalisation of migration translates into the emergence of hostile environments for migrants and those who assist them. This book will be of interest to criminologists, sociologists, legal scholars, and all those engaged in studies on migration and the European Union.

Introduction to Bayesian Data Analysis for Cognitive Science (Chapman & Hall/CRC Statistics in the Social and Behavioral Sciences)

by Shravan Vasishth Bruno Nicenboim Daniel J. Schad

This book introduces Bayesian data analysis and Bayesian cognitive modeling to students and researchers in cognitive science (e.g., linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology, computer science), with a particular focus on modeling data from planned experiments. The book relies on the probabilistic programming language Stan and the R package brms, which is a front-end to Stan. The book only assumes that the reader is familiar with the statistical programming language R, and has basic high school exposure to pre-calculus mathematics; some of the important mathematical constructs needed for the book are introduced in the first chapter.Through this book, the reader will be able to develop a practical ability to apply Bayesian modeling within their own field. The book begins with an informal introduction to foundational topics such as probability theory, and univariate and bi-/multivariate discrete and continuous random variables. Then, the application of Bayes' rule for statistical inference is introduced with several simple analytical examples that require no computing software; the main insight here is that the posterior distribution of a parameter is a compromise between the prior and the likelihood functions. The book then gradually builds up the regression framework using the brms package in R, ultimately leading to hierarchical regression modeling (aka the linear mixed model). Along the way, there is detailed discussion about the topic of prior selection, and developing a well-defined workflow. Later chapters introduce the Stan programming language, and cover advanced topics using practical examples: contrast coding, model comparison using Bayes factors and cross-validation, hierarchical models and reparameterization, defining custom distributions, measurement error models and meta-analysis, and finally, some examples of cognitive models: multinomial processing trees, finite mixture models, and accumulator models. Additional chapters, appendices, and exercises are provided as online materials and can be accessed here: https://github.com/bnicenboim/bayescogsci.

Introduction to Differential and Difference Equations through Modeling (Textbooks in Mathematics)

by William P. Fox Robert E. Burks, Jr.

This book presents an opportunity to learn difference and differential equations through a modeling-first approach. The text is meant as an introduction to those equations and not as a text only for modeling courses. No previous exposure to these equations is expected. Modeling in Introduction to Differential and Difference Equations through Modeling is presented as the vehicle for learning difference and differential equations. Although the topics in difference and differential equations are consistent with those in other textbooks, this approach differs. The presentation starts with a model (or several models) and offers the solution with minor discussions. Then, methods to obtain those solutions are presented and show these same models and others again in more detail. This approach is designed to focus on the use of difference and differential equations to solve real-world problems, and to learn not only these primary topics, but how to apply these through modeling. The authors begin with a review of matrix algebra, then an introduction to modeling. The text progresses to discrete dynamical systems, and then to the standard organization of most differential equation texts, making the alignment with a current syllabus easier. Technology is a significant modeling component. Excel®, Python®, and Maple® are presented as methods to solving the models. This material has been class tested at the US Military Academy at West Point, Marian University, the College of William & Mary, and the Naval Postgraduate School with great success.
