by Dr. David Jeremiah

The cost of being Christ's disciples...Follow Dr. Jeremiah through the book of 2 Corinthians in a chapter-by-chapter study that will help you understand what it meant to the people at the time it was written, and what it means to Christians today. The apostle Paul founded many churches in the Roman Empire, including one in the prominent city of Corinth. But after personally ministering to them for years, he is saddened to discover that he's being viciously slandered and ridiculed by adversaries who have arrived in the region.Paul responds by penning a second letter to them, defending not only his authority as an apostle of Christ but also the truth of the gospel he had so painstakingly modelled in their midst. Paul's words reveal the cost of following Christ—and the ultimate rewards that await those who are faithful to Jesus. Each of this study's twelve lessons is clearly organized to include:Getting Started: An opening question to introduce you to the lesson.Setting the Stage: A short reflection to explain the context of the study.Exploring the Text: The Scripture reading for the lesson with related study questions.Reviewing the Story: Questions to help you identify key points in the reading.Applying the Message: Questions to help you apply the key ideas to their lives.Reflecting on the Meaning: A closing reflection on the key teachings in the lesson.—ABOUT THE SERIES—The Jeremiah Bible Study Series captures Dr. David Jeremiah's forty-plus years of commitment in teaching the Word of God. 24k Life: Living Every Day Refined by God's Word

by LeeAnn Kirkindoll

Although obtaining physical gold is held in high regard, panning for gold nuggets within the pages of our Bibles is actually where lasting riches are found. And when life&’s daily challenges are met with the refining truth of God&’s Word, we have the opportunity to emerge as 24k gold--solid, luminous, without blemish and refined to its purest state. The treasured result of that transformation: our lives will become a brilliant testament of Christ&’s love as others see how applied scripture can change our minds, refine our actions and purify our hearts.24k Life is filled with stories, lessons and hope--each entry challenging us to let the messiness of our daily lives intersect with the refining truth of God&’s Word. Every devotion is inspired by a color photo that immediately brought a particular spiritual lesson to mind. Some are quick nudges toward actions required to show the love of Christ in our day-to-day routines. Others are more lengthy as we seek to change mindsets that have kept us paralyzed in fear or stuck in old habits that rob us of our opportunities to reflect Christ. Each devo stands on its own and is meant to be focused on throughout your week with scripture memory, deeper personal study and real-life application. The content in 24k Life is presented as if you were having conversations with a friend. Some entries involve humorous reflections of lessons learned while others reveal vulnerable moments that change the trajectory of one&’s faith. Why? Because that&’s real life. Sometimes we need encouragement to just laugh at ourselves while other times we need to take a strong look at the habits that keep us stuck in patterns of defeat. And though some struggle with handling disappointments, many are fiercely battling to trust God with the &“un-trustables&”. Still others of us have simply turned a blind eye to what it really means to represent Christ in our day-to-day. We attend church services, read our Bibles and show up at group studies on a weekly basis--all the while never actually applying what we learn to our own lives. But the hope is that you, just like many of us, are ready to let God refine those areas that need a little work. That you too might have a heart that wants to see Him use your life to draw others to His unfailing love. And if you have never had a personal relationship with Jesus, the hope is that you&’ll find Him in the pages of these entries. Because not only does God love you, He also has a very specific plan for your life. It&’s empowering to know that when our mindsets meet God&’s point of view, the opportunity for us to emerge &‘solid, without blemish, luminous and refined to our purest state&’ actually becomes a reality. No matter your circumstances. No matter where you currently are. No matter where you used to be. This can be the moment you begin a daily journey to emerge as 24k GOLD.Come and join our Girl Gang of modern day &‘gold-diggers&’ who are living a life refined by God&’s Word--the 24k Life.

God of All Things: Rediscovering the Sacred in an Everyday World

by Andrew Wilson

Abstract theology is overrated, for God can be found in even the most ordinary of things. Jesus used things like a lily, sparrow, and sheep to teach about the kingdom of God. And in the Old Testament, God repeatedly describes himself and his saving work in relation to physical things such as a rock, horn, or eagle. In God of All Things, pastor and author Andrew Wilson invites you to rediscover God in this way, too--through ordinary, everyday things. He explores the idea of a material world and presents a variety of created marvels that reveal the gospel in everyday life and fuel worship and joy in God--marvels like:Dust: the image of GodHorns: the salvation of GodDonkeys: the peace of GodWater: the life of GodViruses: the problem of GodCities: the kingdom of GodGod of All Things will leave you with a deeper understanding of Scripture, the world you live in, and the God who made it all.

What Do You Think?: The Intersection of Everyday Life with God’s Word

by Thomas J. Doubt

What Do YOU Think? is a book by Thomas J. Doubt to stimulate thinking about aspects of everyday life that may not be on our front burners. Many people board a commercial airline each day; few, if any, might reflect on how the safety briefing might be used to tell someone about Jesus. A morning cup of coffee often allows us to ponder how our day might go, but does it draw our attention to warnings in the Bible? Riding a golf cart to the first tee probably does not inspire thoughts about our journey of faith.Jesus began several of his teaching moments by asking a simple question. What do you think? His intent was not to solicit personal opinions. The world is neck deep in personal opinions lacking a divine foundation. From the beginning, the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us wanted our brains to be engaged by his words so our thoughts might travel from mind to heart, and from heart to action. What Do YOU Think? is a book that follows the model of Jesus. Stories to stimulate thinking, scriptures to encourage the heart, and in the end, conviction to choose a better path.

Bridging the Testaments: The History and Theology of God’s People in the Second Temple Period

by George Athas

An accessible introduction to the historical and theological developments between the Old and New Testament.Bridging the end of the Old Testament period and the beginning of the New Testament period, this book surveys the history and theological developments of four significant eras in Israel's post-exilic history: the Persian Era (539-331 BC), the Hellenistic Era (332-167 BC), the Hasmonean Era (167-63 BC), and the Roman Era (63-4 BC). In doing so, it does away with the notion that there were four hundred years of prophetic silence before Jesus.Bridging the Testaments outlines the political and social developments of these four periods, with particular focus on their impact upon Judeans and Samarians. Using a wide range of biblical and extra-biblical sources, George Athas reconstructs what can be known about the history of Judah and Samaria in these eras, providing the framework for understanding the history of God's covenant people, and the theological developments that occurred at the end of the Old Testament period, leading into the New Testament. In doing so, Athas shows that the notion of a supposed period of four hundred years of prophetic silence is not supported by the biblical or historical evidence. Finally, an epilogue sketches the historical and theological situation prevailing at the death of Herod in 4 BC, providing important context for the New Testament writings. In this way, the book bridges the Old and New Testaments by providing a historical and theological understanding of the five centuries leading up to the birth of Jesus, tracking a biblical theology through them, and abolishing the notion of a four-century prophetic silence.

Your Life is Re-markable!: Becoming the you that's free to love

by Jacqueline Scott

You know the you that you dream about being; the better version of who you are, the one your Maker intended? Why doesn&’t that just happen? How do we become the person we were made to be?Busy-ness, distraction and lack of direction keep us from growth. If we don&’t slow down and get some focus, we&’ll stay as we are. We&’ll miss out on who we were supposed to be. Our souls need nurturing to grow. My heart is small, but it is grow-able, &“re-markable&”! Though our lives are marked with sorrow, disappointment and confusion, we can be re-marked.With the flurry in our world, who has time to pause to consider life, where they&’re going and what they&’re becoming? This memoir is an invitation to listen in on my inner discovery as I face my life and invite you to do the same. The August 2015 Huffington Post reported that many mid-lifers feel dismissed by society by age 50, yet that&’s when all the wisdom is kicking in! We have to harness the wealth of our lives. My own growth seemed painfully slow. I was thrust into the disorientation and grind of cross-cultural life that pushed me to searching. I join many others on this quest of soul growth. Our past can inform us and launch us into a desired future. Our Creator calls us to examine our ways and test them. (Lamentations 3:40)Many of the subjects in this book echo parts of everyone&’s story. Yet there are myriad ways of dealing with our lives. We work hard to make money, stay healthy, arrange meals or choose a car. We plan our travels and our grocery lists, but how about our souls? What do we want to become? What do we want to accomplish by the end of our days?Foraging into this kind of journey takes time, thought and perseverance. Many abandon the effort leaving pieces scattered. Others attempt to assemble themselves and make good progress then leave it because of the dark uneasy parts where everything muddles. Some actually get to a point of seeing a coherent, meaningful picture of why they are stuck or what their life is for but lack a way forward. When we moved to our second overseas assignment, I wanted to be there, but my heart wasn&’t. I hoped to help the people there where God had supposedly been dead for decades. I had to take a deep look at where I&’d come from, what were the major influencing factors for good and bad and what conclusions I came to that may have set the course for bad patterns of thinking or relating. It was often the questions and accusations in the wee hours that urged me to bring my groanings to God; the ones I didn&’t really want to face. I wrestled with God trying to put words to my introversion. Books and friends, little by little, mentored me through. I began revisiting past influences and moments of my life that impacted me and noticed a connection between past and present struggles. Through redeemed life events and questions that boomeranged into new perspectives, I found myself being lifted to freedom, joy and inner growth. I hope to add to the soul-discovery conversation an angle that inspires longing and courage to face your life. With your cooperation, your Designer will newly mark the way you see yourself, your past, your relationships and your future. The journey guide at the end was crafted to help others walk through their journey to grasp more fully the story God wants to tell with their life.Reading this book should:Whet your appetite for adventuring with God into deeper heart transformation.Free you to courageously take an objective look at your life.Offer firm hope that there is more to your walk with God.Plunge you into piercing questions that cause reflection and communion with God and others.

Rustic Warriors: Warfare and the Provincial Soldier on the New England Frontier, 1689-1748 (Warfare and Culture #10)

by Steven C. Eames

The early French Wars (1689-1748) in North America saw provincial soldiers, or British white settlers, in Massachusetts and New Hampshire fight against New France and her Native American allies with minimal involvement from England. Most British officers and government officials viewed the colonial soldiers as ill-disciplined, unprofessional, and incompetent: General John Forbes called them “a gathering from the scum of the worst people.” Taking issue with historians who have criticized provincial soldiers’ battlefield style, strategy, and conduct, Steven C. Eames demonstrates that what developed in early New England was in fact a unique way of war that selectively blended elements of European military strategy, frontier fighting, and native American warfare. This new form of warfare responded to and influenced the particular challenges, terrain, and demography of early New England. Drawing upon a wealth of primary materials on King William’s War, Queen Anne’s War, Dummer’s War, and King George’s War, Eames offers a bottom-up view of how war was conducted and how war was experienced in this particular period and place. Throughout Rustic Warriors, he uses early New England culture as a staging ground from which to better understand the ways in which New Englanders waged war, as well as to provide a fuller picture of the differences between provincial, French, and Native American approaches to war.
