Food in Nineteenth-Century British History: Volume Three: Mealtimes (Nineteenth-Century Science, Technology and Medicine: Sources and Documents)
by Ian MillerA curious phenomenon occurred in British food writing from around the 1860s. Publishers began printing books dedicated to specific meals. Breakfast. Luncheons. Afternoon Tea. Dinners. Until this time, most cookbooks had been hefty tomes containing hundreds of pages of recipes, but the new recipe books were slimmer and more accessible, catering for a broader readership. The appearance of focused cookbooks reveals the growing influence of advanced printing technologies and rising literacy levels combined with changes in social life and class relations that coalesced around food, granting mealtimes great importance. The sources reprinted in this volume were produced in response to the changing social dynamics that accompanied industrialisation, urbanisation and socio-economic modernisation.
Aesthetics and the City (Routledge Studies in Urbanism and the City)
by Joe Blakey Amy BarronAesthetics and the City engages aesthetics to explore the role of the city in urban experience. Drawing on diverse theories and global case studies, this edited collection examines how aesthetics relates to how cities and urban spaces are perceived, organised, and transformed. This book celebrates and ponders the wide diversity of aesthetic approaches within urban studies, noting that the way aesthetics is understood impacts what can be understood about cities and the urban order more generally. In its most general sense, aesthetics refers to our sensuous relation to the world. It invariably figures in how we make sense of the city and ourselves—bound to how urban life is experienced imaginatively, materially, socially, culturally, and politically. In an era where scholars have expressed concern at epistemological city-centrism, aesthetics is proposed as a versatile concept through which the centrality of the city to urban thought can be assessed. The book also explores how aesthetics intersects with a range of tangential concepts including power, the political, art, and affect. Ultimately it makes the case that this diverse ensemble of approaches to aesthetics can enable scholars to understand the city and its enduring relevance to urban thought. This book focuses on the concepts of "aesthetics" and "the city" and will appeal to scholars and students in urban studies, human geography, planning, politics, and sociology.

The Consequences of Non-cooperation with the International Criminal Court: An Analysis Through the Lens of General International Law (International Criminal Justice Series #37)
by Melville Ludwig JacobsThis book aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how the International Criminal Court can be better equipped to handle instances of non-cooperation with its requests by States, specifically State Parties to the Rome Statute that have a concrete obligation to cooperate with the Court. The book suggests that non-cooperation is not handled in an effective manner at any stage of non-cooperation proceedings. This highlights the need for there to be more effective responses and remedies for handling the failure to cooperate, from the initial decision on non-cooperation by the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber's to the follow-up mechanisms developed by the institutional bodies tasked with addressing non-cooperation. Existing literature on non-cooperation appears to strictly look to the black letter of the Rome Statute to address and remedy the gaps in the Court's handling of non-cooperation matters. This book, however, intends to conduct a broad study, and will therefore look beyond the Rome Statute to search for effective remedies for responding to instances of non-cooperation, through relevant international peace and security. Specific focus will be placed on the Responsibility to Protect and the ILC's Articles on the Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts. Responses to non-cooperation will also be analysed through its potential relationship with peremptory norms of general international law (jus cogens). This volume in the ICJ Series is especially relevant considering recent developments in international criminal law, including the continued inability of the ICC to effectively address non-cooperation in high-profile cases. Specifically tailored for legal academics, practitioners, and policymakers, this book seeks to bridge theoretical analyses with practical solutions, making it an important tool for those invested in the future of international criminal justice. Melville Jacobs is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Palacký University Olomouc, Centre for International Humanitarian and Operational Law.

by Hans-Ulrich KaudererIn diesem Open-Access-Buch wird Verbandserfolg neu definiert.

But the peace that&’s taken Rusty so long to find evaporates when Bea&’s young adult son, Aaron, living under their supervision while on probation for drug possession, disappears. If Aaron doesn&’t return soon, he will be sent back to jail. Aaron eventually turns up with a vague story about a camping trip with his troubled girlfriend, Mae, that ended in a fight and a long hitchhike home. Days later, when she still hasn&’t returned, suspicion falls on Aaron, and when Mae is subsequently discovered dead, Aaron is arrested and set for trial on charges of first-degree murder. Faced with few choices and even fewer hopes, Bea begs Rusty to return to court one last time, to defend her son and to save their last best hope for happiness. For Rusty, the question is not whether to defend Aaron, or whether the boy is in fact innocent—it&’s whether the system to which he has devoted his life can ever provide true justice for those who are presumed guilty.

Narratives of Non-English L2 Language Teachers
by Nur Yiğitoğlu Aptoula Melinda ReicheltThis book highlights the narratives of teachers of non-English languages. Much of what we know about L2 teaching is based on conclusions drawn from research on teaching in English as an L2, with languages besides English being given short shrift or ignored entirely. Examining L2 teaching practices related to non-English languages can help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of language pedagogy. This is because different target languages play different roles in the contexts in which they are taught, which influences teaching and learning in significant ways. The contributions in this book include chapters from L2 instructors who teach a wide range of languages in different settings, including different geographical, sociolinguistic, and institutional contexts. With narratives focused on pedagogical practices and practical materials, this resource will be beneficial to pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and researchers in language education, as well as in-service teacher training programs.

Food in Nineteenth-Century British History: Volume IV: Britain, Food and the World (Nineteenth-Century Science, Technology and Medicine: Sources and Documents)
by Ian MillerVolume 4 examines the British diet from its colonial and global perspectives. Colonialism, combined with rapidly improving global transport networks, introduced the British introduced to a plethora of unfamiliar foods from overseas. Changing economic trading patterns also impacted massively on the changing British diet. Emigration (inwards and outwards), and military service, further encouraged a global inter-mingling of diets and palates. The British stomach was introduced to new spices and herbs, either at home or abroad, although fears persisted that the British constitution was ill-suited to rich, foreign foods. A selection of sources will bring to life how the increasingly globalised world changed British eating habits, while introducing readers to the many debates surrounding this transition.
Food in Nineteenth-Century British History: Volume II: Diet and Health (Nineteenth-Century Science, Technology and Medicine: Sources and Documents)
by Ian MillerFor all classes, British eating habits changed dramatically in the long nineteenth century. Volume two offers a collection of sources that shed light on what people ate and cooked at home, and also while they were out and about. Cookery books are an obvious primary source, and these range from popular books aimed largely at servants responsible for providing meals to middle- and upper-class families to less lavish recipes contained in books intended for school cookery classes which would then be prepared at home.

Food in Nineteenth-Century British History: Volume I: Urbanisation and Dietary Change (Nineteenth-Century Science, Technology and Medicine: Sources and Documents)
by Ian MillerIn the long nineteenth century, significant developments occurred in science, technology and medicine which transformed food production and consumption. Coupled with this was the impact of the Industrial and Agricultural Revolutions. Developments in agricultural production meant that the rapidly growing British population conglomerated around urban areas could be fed. However, worsening public health conditions in British towns and cities, combined with social problems such as poverty, meant that nutritional and dietary health declined. This volume explores the foods that were eaten in nineteenth-century Britain.
How the EU and Russia Narrate the World: Struggling for Recognition (New International Relations)
by Mario BaumannIn times of increasing challenges to ‘the Western idea,’ this book illuminates how Russian and EU foreign policy discourses interact. While official Russian and EU articulations on issues of sovereignty, human rights and the shared neighbourhood diverge greatly, they are not articulated in isolation but are entangled and condition each other. To understand this entanglement, this book approaches the relationship between Russia and the EU as an intersubjective one, a social context where diverging interpretations of the world struggle for hegemony. Its theoretical framework marries poststructuralist thought with insights from critical approaches to Hegelian recognition dialectics. Based on an extensive and systematic empirical discourse analysis of Russian and EU foreign policy texts, this study draws a detailed picture of the intensifying discursive dynamics accompanying the deteriorating relationship between Brussels and Moscow. It shows how neither the EU’s nor Russia’s foreign policy articulation has changed substantially. The interaction pattern continues to be an asymmetrical one with Russia’s articulations much more conditioned by the EU’s discourse than vice versa. The book thus argues that the EU is more independent in sovereignly articulating an interpretation of the world, whereas Russia continues to face constraints in the formulation of an autonomous political project. With its novel and innovative conceptual framework, this book furthers the theoretical scholarship on poststructuralism in international relations. It addresses all scholars interested in poststructuralist enquiries and will be of great value to students and scholars of Russian foreign policy and the EU.

Artificial Intelligence and Taxation Law: Double Taxation Dispute Resolution (Routledge Research in Tax Law)
by Enrico GalloThis book identifies how artificial intelligence (AI) systems can be used as part of decision processes within international tax and transfer pricing disputes. The issue of double taxation and its impact on economic development continues to escalate as globalization causes states to interact on a growing scale. In recent years, AI applications have shown potential to solve this issue, particularly in reference to the length of time taken to resolve cases of double taxation in the field of transfer pricing. These cases can typically take at least two or more years to resolve, resulting in high cost to taxpayers and tax administrations. The book identifies the current legal frameworks available to prevent and solve tax and more specific transfer pricing disputes and details their advantages and disadvantages. Providing an analysis of what AI can offer to different legal principles, it shows how this can challenge existing rules, and the changes this requires within the legal framework. The book provides an overview of the challenges and opportunities that lie at the intersection of AI systems and the domain of international law, providing case studies to demonstrate its practical applications. It asks and answers the fundamental question: Can AI, or more specifically machine learning (ML), replace human decisions within the resolution of international tax and transfer pricing disputes? The book will be of interest to researchers in the field of tax law, data protection law, consumer protection law, intellectual property law and artificial intelligence.
Reconsidering Global Environmental Governance: Coloniality, Extractivism, and the Pursuit of Environmental Justice (Transforming Environmental Politics and Policy)
by Gabriela Kütting Wendy GodekReconsidering Global Environmental Governance: Coloniality, Extractivism, and the Pursuit of Environmental Justice employs the concept of coloniality to examine the relationship between global environmental governance and environmental justice.Global environmental governance is perceived to be the natural solution for global environmental problems; however, its liberal emphasis reproduces colonial hierarchies at the expense of marginalized groups in the Global North and South alike. To develop this argument, this book draws on case studies that elucidate multiple expressions of coloniality in instances of socio-environmental conflict. With a focus on extractivism, the authors explore case studies in Greece and Honduras to illustrate the impact of existing global environmental governance institutions on marginalized groups and local communities, as well as case studies of gender and multispecies justice to highlight the opportunities and limitations of efforts to challenge liberal governance institutions and provide new pathways for enhancing environmental justice.Overall, the book aims to initiate a debate on how to decolonize global environmental politics and will be of particular interest to teachers, researchers, and students of environmental studies, global governance, development studies, political ecology, international political economy, and critical theory, as well as policymakers and civil society specialists.
