Pub Rock in the UK and Australia: From the 1970s to the Twenty-First Century (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series)

by Andy Bennett Jon Stratton

This book critically examines two versions of the genre identified as pub rock as they evolved in the UK and Australia. Both developed in the communal spaces of pubs and both had their heyday in the mid‑ to‑late 1970s. Indeed, the two have so much in common that AC/DC, sometimes thought of as the quintessential Australian pub rock group, became hugely popular in the UK, while other Australian groups such as the Sports, outliers of pub rock, also had success there. At the same time UK pub rockers like Graham Parker and the Rumour and Rockpile toured Australia. Three of Parker’s albums climbed to higher places on the Australian chart than on the UK chart. However, a great deal separated the two genres. In the UK, pub rock is often misleadingly viewed as the insipid music which was violently replaced by the uproarious and rebellious punk sounds of Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Slits and the other do-it-yourself groups of 1977 and later. Many members of groups later identified as punk, including Sex Pistols and the Clash, had previously played in groups identified as pub rock. In Australia, pub rock, played by groups including Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, the Angels and Rose Tattoo, formed the basis for the mainstream guitar rock sound that dominated Australian popular music through the 1980s and into the 1990s. This book makes a valuable contribution to cultural sociology, popular music and cultural studies.

The Politics of Late Urban Entrepreneurialism: The Innovation District (RIPE Series in Global Political Economy)

by Greig Charnock Ramon Ribera-Fumaz Jose Mansilla

The Politics of Late Urban Entrepreneurialism provides a critical examination of how innovation district transformation in Barcelona has led to periodic crisis and an overproduction of commercial real estate alongside a chronic housing shortage, gentrification, touristification, and a growth in low‑quality employment, among other damaging results.Today, innovation districts are widely seen as a disruptive but generative solution to post‑industrial decline and inefficient land use in urban centres and as an effective means of bringing inclusive economic dynamism, quality jobs, and improved public spaces to city neighbourhoods. Their advocates often point to the pioneering transformation of the 22@ District. This book challenges the celebratory discourse surrounding the Barcelona case, and with a critical eye on how innovation district transformation is conditioned by the prevailing global political‑economic context. It also chronicles how this transformation has continually ignited forms of class‑based struggle in Barcelona by embattled residents angered at how their own neighbourhood has been used as an urban laboratory and site for speculative forms of capital accumulation. Ultimately, this book challenges the notion that ‘innovation’ is always a beneficent force through a critical examination of the disruptive consequences of innovation district transformation, by engaging with existing literature and interrogating the dominant narratives that celebrate them as being universally beneficial. Instead, it underscores the tensions and contradictions inherent in them. With its focus on the historical development of global capitalism and the retention of a narrow repertoire of entrepreneurial approaches towards urban governance, The Politics of Late Urban Entrepreneurialism will be of great interest to scholars and students researching globalisation and urbanisation.

Markets in Human Organs for Transplantation: Controversy and Contention (Routledge Annals of Bioethics)

by Mark J. Cherry James Stacey Taylor

This volume presents a comprehensive examination of one of bioethics’ most divisive debates: whether human organs should be bought and sold. It brings together diverse philosophical perspectives from leading scholars who explore the moral, political, and practical dimensions of organ markets. The volume addresses critical questions at the intersection of medicine, ethics, and economics: Would financial incentives for organ donation save lives or exploit the vulnerable? Can organ markets be ethically regulated to prevent abuse? How do principles of distributive justice apply to organ allocation? Should bodily autonomy extend to selling one’s organs? Contributors include both proponents who argue that properly regulated markets would increase organ supply and reduce suffering, and opponents who contend that commodification of organs violates human dignity and risks exploitation. The collection examines utilitarian, libertarian, and communitarian approaches while considering real-world policy implications. It also offers nuanced analysis of paternalistic prohibitions, feasibility concerns, and alternative procurement systems. By presenting multiple viewpoints in dialogue, the volume provides readers with the intellectual tools to form their own informed positions on this controversial issue.Markets in Human Organs for Transplantation is an ideal resource for researchers, students, and healthcare professionals interested in the ethical dimensions of transplant medicine.

Energy Rents and Income Distribution: Are Wages and Profits Legitimate?

by Bernard C. Beaudreau

This book explores into the dynamics of income distribution, challenging the established approaches of 19th-century political economist Karl Marx and 21st-century economist Thomas Piketty. Re-examinining the foundational principles of wealth creation through the lens of physical sciences, particularly mechanics, thermodynamics, and kinetics, Bernard C. Beaudreau argues that energy, rather than labor or capital, drives material processes and the accumulation of wealth. In the book, Beaudreau critiques current distribution theories, highlighting their connections to the basic laws of physics. He introduces the energy-organization approach, positing that labor and capital are organizationally productive rather than physically productive. This perspective can be used to observe income distribution as they connect to energy rents, which are the returns to energy after accounting for its costs. The book touches on globalization, presenting this approach as a form of energy rent seeking rather than a result of comparative advantage. Beaudreau proposes alternative systems for distributing energy rents and examines their implications for the legitimacy of wages and profits. Integrating scientific principles with economic theory, this book offers a unique approach to conversations surrounding income inequality.

The Ultimate Moving Average Handbook: Bringing Science into the Art of Trend Following

by Valeriy Zakamulin Javier Giner

Moving averages of prices serve as the primary tool for tracking trends in financial markets, filtering out noise, and highlighting trend directions. With a plethora of moving averages and trend-following rules at their disposal, traders often find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer variety of choices. Moreover, traders persistently devise new forms of exotic moving averages, each purportedly offering improved responsiveness and smoothness compared to its predecessors. While it is relatively straightforward to visually compare the responsiveness of two different moving averages, assessing their smoothing properties proves to be more challenging. Comparisons made through visual inspection are inherently subjective and prone to biases. A pressing need exists for quantitative metrics to objectively assess the properties of moving averages and their associated trend-following rules. In this book, the authors propose a quantitative assessment of the properties of trend-following rules based on moving averages. They argue that there are three primary properties of trend-following rules: responsiveness, smoothness, and accuracy. Given the prevalent claims that each exotic moving average offers superior responsiveness and smoothness compared to prior versions, the book provides a means to verify the accuracy of these assertions. It offers systematic and comprehensive coverage of various types of moving averages and the trend-following rules based on moving averages, and focuses on identifying the most crucial properties of trend-following rules and proposing quantitative metrics for their evaluation. Despite the plethora of books and academic publications, contemporary trend-following with moving averages remains more of an art than a science. This book injects scientific principles into the practice of trend-following, offering invaluable, distinct, and objective insights tailored for traders and investment professionals involved in trend-following investing alongside academics and students within economic and finance departments.

Precarity and the Development of Research Careers in Academia: Becoming a Researcher

by David Cairns

Precarity is a concern that affects researchers in academia across the world. Despite being experienced and highly qualified, many endure working conditions more traditionally associated with people lacking skills and credentials. This book explores this perverse situation, focusing on Portugal, with a view to explaining how precarity starts and then continues for the entire duration of a research career. Using 100 interviews conducted with researchers from across Portugal in 2022-2023, covering a wide range of scientific fields, the book gives these people the opportunity to explain why they became researchers and how they have coped with precarity during the early career stages, and at intermediate and advanced levels. As a sociological study, the book draws on the theoretical concepts of ambivalence, liminality and cruel optimism to help map the parameters of precarity, while the evidence demonstrates its often visceral personal and professional impacts, reaching the conclusion that believing research needs to be a precarious profession must be challenged within higher education institutions and at policy level.

Selfscapes, Selfhoods, and Subjectivities: Perspectives from Anthropology and Psychoanalysis

by Douglas Hollan

This book explores cross-cultural similarities and differences of human subjectivity and selfhood through the concept of selfscapes.Utilizing an ethnographic and person-centered approach to the study of human subjectivity, Selfscapes, Selfhoods, and Subjectivities demonstrates that autopoietic processes are informed by the constraints of a social and material ecology acting on a particular person and by how that person is remembering and habitually responding to that history of engagement with the world. While the co-constitution of social and historical circumstance and individual reactivity and memory is universal, the way an autopoietic process unfolds within any given social ecology will vary, sometimes greatly, from person to person. Drawing on a broad theoretical base, this book is essential reading for anthropologists, psychoanalysts, social psychologists, and anyone seeking to understand the varieties and particularities of human subjectivity and selfhood.

The Appeals Process in the International Criminal Court: Evolution through Practice in the International Criminal Justice System

by Sonia Głogowska

This book presents an analysis of the model of appellate procedure before the International Criminal Court, based on both the Court’s legal texts and case-law. While guiding the reader through the complexities of the Rome Statute, the Rules of Procedure and Evidence and the Regulations of the Court, the author underlines the role of judicial law-making powers in international trials. The study reflects on numerous legal and functional problems arising in the Appeal Chamber’s practice, including those that have yet to be addressed by the Court. The monograph proves that while the ICC legal texts are not clear about the general shape of appellate procedure before the ICC, especially the functions of the Appeals Chamber and objectives of appellate proceedings, the model of appellate procedure has been developed through the Appeals Chamber’s practice, sometimes contrary to the literal interpretation of the provisions of the Rome Statute and not in line with the expectations of the international community. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of International Criminal Justice, International Human Rights Law and Criminal Law and Procedure.

The Politics of Commitment: Towards a Better Future for Humanity (Routledge Studies in Social and Political Thought)

by Anthony M. Clohesy

This book examines the nature of our commitment to the long-term survival of humanity. It addresses the lack of a sustainable and ethical commitment to a shared and binding future for the well-being of those who will come after us.While other texts focus on the threats to our survival, such as climate catastrophe or nuclear annihilation, this study argues that a greater threat to our survival is our disposition of ambivalence about the value of future lives. The other claim of the book is that, to avoid our extinction, we have to recover a sense of ourselves as beings worthy of salvation.Clearly argued and jargon free, the book will be useful for scholars with an academic interest in philosophy, psychology, sociology, history, culture studies, and population ethics.
