The Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Ethiopia: Nurturing Small Business Development (Routledge Research on African Economics)

by Mulu Gebreeyesus Habtamu Legas Abebe Ayana

This book investigates Ethiopia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, assessing how entrepreneurship and small business development are being fostered and identifying gaps and opportunities for further positive change. The second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ethiopia, is marked by a growing economy and a dynamic entrepreneurial landscape. This book adopts a multi-level analytical framework to assess the actors, processes, and institutions that shape entrepreneurship in Ethiopia, capturing dynamics at the macro (national), meso (industry), and micro (firm) levels. The macro-level analysis benchmarks Ethiopia’s ecosystem performance against peer African countries. The meso level evaluates industry-specific support structures, including business networks and the availability and sustainability of business development services (BDS). At the micro level, the focus is on how firms access, use, and are impacted by ecosystem resources and business support services. Combining quantitative and qualitative research, the book shows how industry-specific BDS are integral to the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem.Providing an important case study of the role of entrepreneurship and small businesses in economic and social development, this book will be an important read for researchers across business, economics, and development studies, as well as for policymakers responsible for implementing strategies and policies to support entrepreneurship and small business development.

Human Rights and the Architecture of Conflict

by Tim Cunningham

Human Rights and the Architecture of Conflict exposes how governments, public officials and private actors on both sides of the Atlantic entrenched racial and ethnic divisions through manipulation of the planning and design of the built environment.Based on interviews, never-before-seen documents, and field work carried out in Belfast,Chicago, Miami, Washington D.C., and New York City, this book shows how the planning and design of our built environment impacts the physical, mental, social, economic, political, and environmental well-being of communities. Tim Cunningham, an urban scholar and human rights advocate, reveals how the British Army set about reconfiguring the urban fabric of Belfast as part of a counter-insurgency strategy in the 1970s. His research shows how the techniques used in Northern Ireland during this period mirror earlier processes deployed in U.S. cities under urban renewal and the Interstate Highway Program. A global genealogy of segregation, that examines the trajectory of colonial urbanism in the twentieth century, the text highlights the real-life walls and barriers that cleave communities along ethnic and racial lines and the role of architects, planners, developers, and public officials in erecting them. The final chapter considers some contemporary efforts to address the legacy of these practices through restorative architecture and planning initiatives that aim to deliver more cohesive, sustainable, and inclusive urban spaces. This book is ideal reading for courses in architecture, city planning, community development, geography, human rights, sociology, transitional justice, urban studies, and Irish history.

Theory of Atomic Nuclei: Foundations

by Bożena Nerlo-Pomorska Krzysztof Roman Pomorski

The dimension of a typical atom is 100.000 times larger than the size of its nucleus, however, around 99.975% of the mass of an atom is concentrated in its nucleus. This is why nuclear theory is sometimes called the theory of everything. Theory of Atomic Nuclei: Foundations selects some fundamental problems of the theory of atomic nuclei at low energy. It reviews specific nuclear physics issues in terms of historical development and evolution into more extended theories, which nowadays constitute complete parts of nuclear science. The book allows the reader to understand the structure of the nucleus, i.e., the mechanism that rules in this subatomic world. The book is intended for graduate physics students at universities and nuclear sciences and engineering students at technical universities. It can also be helpful for PhD students and junior researchers in nuclear physics. The book is based on lectures on the theory of atomic nuclei given by the authors at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin and at doctoral schools in Poland, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, and China in recent years. It is based mostly on original scientific papers and extensive monographs on nuclear theory.Key Features: Written as a compact introduction to theories of the atomic nucleus Despite its compact form, the book acquaints the reader with the basic nuclear models and helps them better understand them Provides the reader with a foundation to go on and navigate contemporary theories or models of the atomic nucleus independently and in more detail

Training and Simulation: Processes, Challenges and Solutions

by Dennis A. Vincenzi Shem Malmquist Shawn Pruchnicki Katherine A. Lemos

Developing training and simulation is a complex business. From understanding human performance design, usability and the limitations of training types to considerations with virtual reality (VR), producing realistic scenarios and even helping accident investigations leaves the practitioner with almost an overwhelming challenge. However, they know that their goal is to cut out developing methods that can train and test the sharp-end professional to be ready for any eventuality whether in the air, a chemical plant or the operating room. Through chapters written by leading experts, this book aims to address the key questions and concerns when developing training and simulation in high-risk industries. This book identifies unexplored challenges and weaknesses in the aviation domain, including ground-based training and flight simulation compared to the real world of in-flight complex aircraft operations, aviation accidents and incidents, airspace and air traffic control, aeronautical communications, air navigation, aircraft automation, and pilot certification and testing. These concerns are not just relevant to aviation, however. This book pushes beyond aviation to include other fields, including petrochemical and medicine, that, while on the surface are different, include some of the same human and organizational challenges. It integrates machine challenges with human factors science and includes a view of the corporate influences on training. Safety is a consideration in all the challenges and current limitations in training and simulation, and the book is written with the intention of improving both training and safety as industries deal with more and more complex advanced technology.Underpinned by case studies and real-life examples, this book will give the reader a thorough overview of the limitations of current training methods but with a view to improving and developing better methods for future training scenarios. Opportunities and solutions are presented for current or future research and the application and incorporation of these in day-day operations.Training and Simulation: Processes, Challenges and Solutions will appeal to practitioners of human factors, training, pilots and ground operators, engineers involved in systems design, safety specialists, test evaluators, and accident investigators across multiple domains.

Tending to Stories in Feminist Theologies: Interdisciplinary Renderings of Faith, Hope and Love (Gender, Theology and Spirituality)

by Helena Kadmos Katharine Massam

Tending to Stories in Feminist Theologies is interested in the place of story-tellers in communities of hope. Where some theologies wrestle for clarity of definition, feminist and other theologies of liberation begin from experience and tend towards story as a vehicle for speaking of the Divine. Ambiguity and precision both find their place. This collection embraces different materials to explore the place of stories and narrative within feminist theology, to explore how meaning ‘happens’, to seek justice, and to forge compassion. As for theology, so too with form. This volume does not just discuss but actively demonstrates a variety of ways in which stories can be heard and held. Between and within chapters, the authors weave together artwork, literature, creative non-fiction, and poetic form with critically informed and academic exposition to invite reflection on the place of story in creating solidarity and enabling community. The book contributes to scholarly conversations on feminist theological method, on the relationship between the arts and theology, and on the dialogue between secular and sacred in Australasia and elsewhere.

For the Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran's Women-Led Uprising

by Fatemeh Jamalpour Nilo Tabrizy

LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • A moving exploration of the 2022 women-led protests in Iran, as told through the interwoven stories of two Iranian journalists &“Unlike anything I&’ve read . . . A searing, courageous, and ultimately beautiful book filled with the spirit of the movement that it covers.&” —Ben Rhodes, author of The World as It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White HouseIn September 2022, a young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Jîna Amini, died after being beaten by police officers who arrested her for not adhering to the Islamic Republic&’s dress code. Her death galvanized thousands of Iranians—mostly women—who took to the streets in one of the country&’s largest uprisings in decades: the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.Despite the threat of imprisonment or death for her work as a journalist covering political unrest, state repression, and grassroots activism in Iran—which has led to multiple interrogation sessions and arrests—Fatemeh Jamalpour joined the throngs of people fighting to topple Iran&’s religious extremist regime. And across the globe, Nilo Tabrizy, who emigrated from Iran with her family as a child, covered the protests and state violence, knowing that spotlighting the women on the front lines and the systemic injustice of the Iranian government meant she would not be able to safely return to Iran in the future.Though they had met only once in person, Nilo and Fatemeh corresponded constantly, often through encrypted platforms to protect Fatemeh. As the protests continued to unfold, the sense of sisterhood they shared led them to embark on an effort to document the spirit and legacy of the movement, and the history, geopolitics, and influences that led to this point. At once deeply personal and assiduously reported, For the Sun After Long Nights offers two perspectives on what it means to cover the stories that are closest to one&’s heart—both in the forefront and from afar.

It is a simple novel, on the one hand, in which its protagonist goes about London preparing for the party she will hold in the evening. It is also a complex novel, one that interweaves Mrs. Dalloway&’s story with those of a shell-shocked veteran, of her old lover, of her unhappy teenage daughter. Together, they form a haunting, mesmerising picture of individual loneliness and post-World War I British society. As Virginia Woolf wrote of it: &“I want to give life & death, sanity & insanity; I want to criticise the social system, & to show it at work, at its most intense.&”This new edition of Mrs. Dalloway, published to mark the centennial of its original appearance, will be followed by new editions of To the Lighthouse and The Waves in celebration of their respective centenaries. All featuring specially commissioned covers that pay tribute to the original designs by Hogarth Press, these editions are meticulously and sensitively edited by scholar and literary critic Edward Mendelson, and are the first to reflect the full range of revisions Virginia Woolf made to her three greatest novels.

Somebody Should Do Something: How Anyone Can Help Create Social Change

by Daniel Kelly Alex Madva Michael Brownstein

A novel and scientific approach to creating transformative social change—and the surprising ways that each of us can help make a real difference.Changing the world is difficult. One reason is that the most important problems, like climate change, racism, and poverty, are structural. They emerge from our collective practices: laws, economies, history, culture, norms, and built environments. The dilemma is that there is no way to make structural change without individual people making different—more structure-facing—decisions. In Somebody Should Do Something, Michael Brownstein, Alex Madva, and Daniel Kelly show us how we can connect our personal choices to structural change and why individual choices matter, though not in the way people usually think. The authors paint a new picture of how social change happens, arguing that our most powerful personal choices are those that springboard us into working together with others—warehouse worker Chris Smalls&’s unionization at Amazon is one powerful example. Taking inspiration from the writer Bill McKibben, they stress how one &“important thing an individual can do is be somewhat less of an individual.&”Organized into three main parts, the book first diagnoses the problem of &“either/or&” thinking about social change, which stems from the false choice of making better personal choices or changing the system. Then it offers a different way to think about social change, anchored in a new picture of human nature emerging across the social sciences. Finally, the authors explore ways of putting this picture into practice. Neither a how-to manual nor an activist&’s guide, Somebody Should Do Something pairs stories with science (plus some jokes) to help readers recognize their own power, turning resignation about climate change and racial injustice into actions that transform the world.

The Double Tax: How Women of Color Are Overcharged and Underpaid

by Chelsea Clinton Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman

Why is it so expensive to be a woman in America? From a rising star in economics comes the first comprehensive look at the costs women face and why the bill runs especially high for women of color—with a foreword by Chelsea Clinton. The &“pink tax&” has gained widespread recognition in recent years, but what happens when you look at the costs that define a woman&’s entire life, especially across racial lines? In The Double Tax, Harvard researcher Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman summarizes the disparities that women face as they navigate life&’s biggest moments. Not only do the numbers reveal that women incur higher costs than men, but also that Black and white women lead vastly different lives, marked by dramatic gaps in job opportunities, salaries, housing costs, childcare access, and generational wealth. She coins this gap as the &“double tax,&” the compounded cost of racism and sexism.Through rigorous research and interviews with women across the country, Opoku-Agyeman calculates the extra money, time, and effort that women are expected and forced to pay at every stage of their life. While the evidence may be discouraging, The Double Tax offers actionable solutions for how everyday people, local communities, and global leaders alike can help relieve women of these costs for good. Only by understanding where the gaps are and where the double tax arises can we begin to even the playing field for all.

Why Fascists Fear Teachers: Public Education and the Future of Democracy

by Randi Weingarten

A rousing defense of public education as the cornerstone of American democracy, by the woman attacked by the far right as &“the most dangerous person in the world&”Attacks on schools and teachers have long been a hallmark of fascist regimes: Throughout history, as many dictators rose to power they began banning books and controlling curriculum. Fascists fear teachers because teachers foster an educated and empowered population that can see past propaganda and scare tactics. Fascists fear teachers because they teach young people how to think for themselves. As the head of one of the largest teachers&’ unions in America, Randi Weingarten is among the last lines of defense for American public education. For decades, she has sounded the alarm that attacks on teachers are part of a larger, darker agenda—to undermine democracy, opportunity, and public education as we know it. After the Trump administration declared its intention to dismantle the Department of Education, that alarm became undeniable. This book tells the story of what teachers do and why those who are afraid of freedom and opportunity try to stop them. It explains why all Americans should care about attacks on schools and teachers—whether they have school-aged children or not. In the past as today, the fate of the United States is inexorably intertwined with the fate of public education.Drawing on history, stories from teachers on the front lines, and decades of experience with America&’s public schools, Weingarten argues that teaching students to think critically is the key to defeating would-be dictators. She encourages teachers to continue focusing on their vital mission to help young people thrive—creating opportunity in safe and welcoming classrooms, promoting tolerance, and teaching problem solving, critical thinking, and healthy debate. She cautions against censorship and complacency, looking to the past to warn us all about what can happen if we devalue teachers and public schools.A manifesto for our time, Why Fascists Fear Teachers is necessary reading for every American worried about the future of our democracy.

Far Calls: On Omens, Slips, & Epiphanies

by Daniel Heller-Roazen

An inquiry into the theories and practices of overhearing When words are not heard but overheard, when phrases are perceived in bits and pieces, and when speakers, failing to do as they intend, state things that they never meant to say, the saying, in its unsteady relation to understanding, becomes an event. That event has long been studied by a disparate company of interpreters: prophets, priests, and rabbis, poets and philosophers, linguists, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts, novelists and filmmakers. All have suggested that in the contingencies of discourse, there are precious indications to be gleaned, for which special techniques are required. In Far Calls, Daniel Heller-Roazen reconstructs such arts of detection, interweaving ancient, medieval, and modern examples. From the rituals of the ancient Greeks, Jews, and Romans to Freud and Lacan, from Augustine&’s catching of a salvific scrap of speech to the inspiration that Breton and Yeats, Proust and Joyce, drew from profane cries and transmissions, Far Calls explores the powers of sonorous coincidence and the varieties of reading that it incites.
