Alt-Education: Gender, Knowledge and Far-right Metapolitics (Routledge Studies in Fascism and the Far Right)
by Catherine TebaldiAlt-Education looks at the stories the right tells about schools: a fight between an evil, indoctrinating government and a far-right freethinking truth warrior, between a frigid cultural Marxist teacher and a loving Christian mother. This book explores the link between education, gender, and far-right metapolitics, and offers insights into the ways in which it circulates and is normalized. Through digital ethnography and fieldwork it explores the production, circulation, and interpretation of these discourses and the ideologies they express, tracing their movement across four groups of women in the US and UK – fascists, white nationalist, Christian nationalists, and Republicans. Although often understood to be opposed to education, the far-right is instead opposed to schooling – and offers its own practices of alt-education. Through media, alternative schools and home education, the far-right teaches their ideologies of gender and race, knowledge, and power, as well as transmitting alternative histories, sociologies, and conspiracies. From mom’s groups to digital discourses about the evils of public schools, social media are key arenas in which women not only teach, but are taught, far-right alternative knowledge. Alt-education teaches reactionary ideology as a timeless truth, normalizing it through discourses of home, family and love. At the same time, alt-education borrows and co-opts the language of critique – normalizing racism, sexism and fascism a kind of alternative knowledge, while making it exciting as a countercultural critique of “woke” liberal indoctrination. The book concludes with a look at this attempt to “speak post-truth to power” as a way of normalizing and spreading their ideology – bringing alt-education to a wide audience as their critiques of “woke” politics spreads across the US, UK, and into Europe. This book is aimed at scholars of the far-right and gender, as well as scholars and practitioners of education. Written in an accessible and engaging tone, this book will be of interest to both researchers and advanced undergraduates.

Researching Care with Case Studies
by Robert Stake Merel VisseResearching Care with Case Studies offers a fresh perspective on the universe of care practices, using case studies to illuminate their stretch and complexities.Building on Robert Stake’s foundational work with qualitative methods and Merel Visse’s integrating insights from care studies, this book offers a comprehensive approach to understanding care across various fields. It bridges the gap between research methodology and professional and personal realities and concerns of care. Readers will benefit from insights derived from care ethics and theory, which highlight relationality, shared responsibility, intersubjectivity, and vulnerability in dynamic interactions within care settings, extending beyond healthcare altogether. This practical approach offers an inclusive and adaptable understanding of care case studies. Here, ‘care’ is broadly defined as encompassing all that is done to enhance personal and other well-being, including shared responsibilities, responsiveness to evolving needs, and the ongoing negotiation of optimal solutions.Step by step, this book guides both novice and experienced researchers in prioritizing issues and concerns, context, specific details, relationships, the richness of lived experiences, and personal narratives when studying and advancing care. It provides insights into the strengths of case studies in learning about care and supports a more nuanced, responsive approach to research in everyday, ordinary practices.
The Psychology of Attack Politics: Perceptions, Evaluations and Effects (Global Perspectives in Political Psychology)
by Alessandro Nai Lukas P. Otto Chiara VargiuThe Psychology of Attack Politics explores the use of political attacks in election campaigns, and the way in which their, often deliberate, use impacts voters and has wide reaching societal consequences. With most elections being fraught with tension, disrespectful treatment of political opponents, and political incivility, this timely book aims to disentangle the dynamics of how attack politics is perceived (e.g., whether citizens perceive a negative message to be, indeed, negative) and evaluated (i.e., whether citizens like or dislike attack politics). The book also looks at the effects of attack politics, for instance, whether exposure to negative or uncivil messages alters attitudes and behaviors, such as turnout, affective polarization, and support for political violence. The authors provide a systematic conceptualization of attack politics, made up of negativity, incivility, and intolerance. Focusing on cutting- edge research in political psychology, political communication, and electoral behavior, the authors make the central argument that to understand the effects of different forms of attack politics, there should be a strong focus on individual differences in message perception and evaluation.Exploring what ultimately drives the effects of negative, uncivil, and intolerant rhetoric, and analyzing the phenomena at the center of current scientific and public discourse, this is a fascinating reading for academics and students in psychology, political science, sociology, and communication, as well as anyone interested in political campaigning and elections.
Black Veteranality: Military Service and the Illusion of Inclusive Patriotism
by Bryon L. GarnerHow does military service collide with Black identity in a racially stratified America? Black Veteranality is an examination of the intersection of race, patriotism, and military service from the perspective of Black veterans, offering a robust framework for reimagining American patriotism and reframing veteran identity. Black veteranality emerges through an interdisciplinary synthesis of W.E.B. Du Bois’ foundational concept of "double consciousness"—the psychological duality Black Americans experience when negotiating racialized identity formations— and Veteran Critical Theory’s (VCT’s) structural analysis of institutional power dynamics shaping military service members. Through critical ethnography and narrative interviews, this conceptual framework interrogates monolithic veteran narratives by documenting how Black service members simultaneously embody patriotic ideals through military service while confronting systemic racism’s psychological toll and navigate what critical race scholars term the White gaze—a hegemonic social mechanism that perpetuates exclusion through perpetual scrutiny of Black veterans’ cultural authenticity and national belonging. Essential reading for scholars of African American studies, American studies, veteran studies, and military professions, this work bridges academia and activism, proving true loyalty lies in confronting systemic inequities.
The Business of Low-Carbon Tourism: The Case of the Tropics (Routledge Advances in Business, Industry and Trade in the Tropics)
by Alexander Josiassen Jacob Wood Abhishek Singh Bhati Valeriya RadomskayaThe millions of tourists who visit tropical nations annually underscore the region's significance in global tourism. However, these nations receive little scholarly attention compared to major countries. This book fills that gap, presenting a unique, in-depth exploration of the pressing transformations and shared sustainability challenges faced by nations and territories in the Tropics, providing valuable insights and solutions for low-carbon tourism development, and offering a novel attempt to progress the responsible tourism agenda. The book contributes to the emerging field of low carbon tourism. It concentrates on tourism-intensive tropical countries, exploring nation-specific and regional measures that could encourage low-carbon operations within the tourism sector. It focuses on distinct populations, host communities and service providers in the Tropics, distinguishing it from most texts on sustainability and low-carbon tourism that either focus on Western perspectives or strive for universal applicability. The chapters place the discussion within a contemporary context and introduce the challenges this era holds, including the role of marketing, policies and regulations, innovation, social norms and values in promoting low-carbon transition in tourism. Topics covered in this book include, but are not limited to, low-impact visitor behavior and low-carbon planning; voluntary, nudged, or compulsory participation in emission reduction initiatives; infrastructural, social, and psychological barriers to change; greenwashing and responsible marketing; ethnocentrism, and the politics of low-carbon tourism.Targeted primarily at academics and professionals in tourism, business, environmental management, policy studies, and public administration, this practical and insightful book is essential reading for anyone interested in low-carbon tourism development and the challenges that lie ahead.
The Intermediary in the Criminal Justice System
by John TaggartThis book undertakes a sociolegal examination of the intermediary role within the criminal justice system. The intermediary special measure is one of the most innovative and controversial developments in the history of English criminal procedure. But what does the role actually involve? That is the central question explored in this book. Despite increased academic attention into this new criminal justice actor, the content of the intermediary role remains unclear. Based centrally on empirical data gathered in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, but also drawing upon comparative material from other jurisdictions, the book examines how those executing the intermediary role understand its work and how other criminal justice actors perceive it. The book then uses this as the basis for generating a theory of the intermediary role and its scope and content. It also considers the future of the role and its integration into the criminal justice system. This book will appeal to those researching and studying in the areas of sociolegal studies, criminal law and criminology, as well as lawyers, judges, intermediaries and policy makers working in relevant areas.
Contested Waste: Environmental conflicts and waste picker resistance in the Global South (Routledge Studies in Political Ecology)
by Federico Demaria Daniele Vico Lucía Fernández GabardContested Waste’ examines socio-environmental conflicts involving waste pickers in the Global South, uncovering the systemic injustices that underpin contemporary waste policies. Driven by the privatisation of waste management, these conflicts expose the “recycling paradox”: while waste pickers make critical, uncompensated contributions to sustainability, they are further excluded. This book analyses how modern waste policies marginalise waste pickers, triggering conflicts in cities across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Drawing on over 70 conflicts documented in the Global Environmental Justice Atlas, the book explores how privatisation, incineration, and waste enclosures displace informal recyclers and worsen the sustainability crisis. These processes exemplify “Capital Accumulation by Dispossession,” as waste streams are enclosed and privatised, excluding waste pickers, and “Capital Accumulation by Contamination,” as environmental burdens are shifted onto marginalised communities. The book also showcases waste pickers’ resilience as they organise to fight for justice and equitable waste systems.Essential for scholars, policymakers, and activists in environmental justice, development, and urban studies, this book reveals the structural drivers of waste conflicts and the transformative power of grassroots resistance in shaping sustainable and inclusive urban futures.
Jack Gelber: Consider This (Routledge Studies in Edward Albee and American Theatre)
by John Patrick BrayJack Gelber: Consider This explores the works of American playwright Jack Gelber (1932–2003), whose groundbreaking, immersive play The Connection (produced by The Living Theatre in 1959) served as the link between the Art Theatre/Beat Generation and the Off-Off-Broadway movement. With The Connection, Gelber provided a Pirandellian framework in which actors playing junkies demonstrated what it was like to wait for a fix. This play forever cemented Gelber’s status in the American theater, and yet his subsequent works have been overlooked. This study, the first monographlength work dedicated to Gelber’s plays, will consider Jack Gelber’s theatrical works as important social humanist absurdist parables that force the audience to consider how the systems we create are flawed, to the extent that some addictions are permissible (even championed), and how we have an obligation to recognize that our social structures are upheld by, to use Gelber’s word, “phonies.” Gelber provides no easy answers. Rather, his plays attempt to shake audiences out of passive spectatorship both in the theater and (as is the hope) in their lives. The plays of Gelber will be analyzed closely, supplemented (where possible) with critical reactions to the plays as produced, while contextualizing each work within its own socioeconomic moment. This book will appeal to scholars, professors, students, and other historians who have an interest in American playwriting.
Is Free Speech Under Threat?
by Suzanne Nossel Charlotte Lydia Riley Intelligence SquaredTwo leading thinkers present alternative answers to one of the most difficult and divisive questions of our times: Is free speech under threat?Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America, the leading free expression organisation, argues that alongside the necessary and long-overdue elevation of minority voices in recent years, there has also arisen an uncompromising intolerance – most notably on university campuses and online – that wrongly equates a wide range of offensive speech with violence and seeks to shut it down. This has led to an escalating free speech arms race, from which everyone loses.Charlotte Lydia Riley, historian of empire and editor of The Free Speech Wars, argues that accusations of cancel culture and defences of free speech are too often disingenuous attempts to fuel a culture war and so inhibit an important realignment in which hateful speech is at last being called out for what it is and the right to free expression is being extended to more people than ever before.Published in conjunction with Intelligence Squared, the world’s leading curator of debate, this book is part of the THINK AGAIN series: short books that present two expert, contrasting but equally persuasive views in a single volume that can be read from either end.

Draw Resonance (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications #990)
by Mathias Bechert Benoit ScheidThis monograph presents many novel aspects of draw resonance, which remains an important field of research in the context of material processing. Draw resonance is used in film casting and fiber spinning at a large industrial scale for the production of polymer films, glass sheets and fibers. The book provides the most complete and coherent picture of draw resonance instability that is available so far in literature, treating all physical aspects together in a consistent and unprecedented way. The argumentation focuses on the physics underlying the observed phenomena, which comprise gravity, inertia, surface tension (for fibre spinning), necking (for film casting), viscoelasticity and thermal effects, all intricately affecting the threshold of the draw resonance. Thus, for the first time, the (de-)stabilizing mechanisms of draw resonance are unraveled, while many stability maps are provided for practical use.To complete the educational aspect, input files for the free software AUTO-07p are made available online, allowing readers to obtain most of the data provided in the monograph. An indispensable book for graduate students, researchers and professionals in material processing.
Nonlinear Robust Control and Optimisation of Microgrids (Springer Theses)
by Grigorios MichosThis book introduces significant innovations to the field of power systems control. It follows a control-theoretic approach to analyzing networked microgrids, providing a deep understanding of system-dynamical behavior and insights into different system parameters. It promotes rigorous control design methods to achieve stable closed-loop dynamics. The proposed methods offer additional benefits such as robustness to system parameter perturbations and constrained operation. The book adds successive levels of complexity in the control design process, enhancing system behavior with valuable properties. Starting with the design of a distributed control scheme for meshed microgrids that enforces both coupled and uncoupled constraints, the book moves on to: reduce conservatism of the control schemes and increase the closed-loop system&’s region of attraction using a geometric approach; limit system trajectories within the desired operational range by constructing control barrier functions and positive invariant sets; and facilitate the generalization of results to increase relevance beyond their origin in the control of power electronics. This book begins with an extensive introduction to relevant topics, making it accessible to recent graduates, professional engineers, and academic researchers.
Gandhi’s Popular Sovereignty of Truth: Devotional Democracy
by Michael AllenThis book offers a philosophical reconstruction of Gandhi&’s political thought as a form of devotional democracy in which the sovereign people speak the voice of truth as God&’s voice. Part One addresses Gandhi&’s relationship to the history of modern Western political thought, and key thinkers such as Hobbes, Locke, and Hegel. Part Two explores the concept of a Gandhian devotional democracy in relation to contemporary political thought and decidedly illiberal thinkers, such as Ivan Ilyin and Curtis Yarvin, as well as contemporary trends including populism, traditionalism, along with important developments like AI superintelligence and interspecies politics. The book aims not only to locate Gandhi in the historical context of modern and contemporary political philosophy but to also demonstrate the potential for his political thought to undergo sympathetic and constructive reinterpretation. It encourages readers to reassess and rethink the role of &‘soul force&’ as superior to state power as well as a nation&’s capacity to realize truth devotionally. Gandhi&’s Popular Sovereignty of Truth is essential reading for all scholars, researchers and advanced students of political philosophy especially those focussing on the thought of Mahatma Gandhi.
Complex Analytic Cycles II: The Cycle Space (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften #363)
by Daniel Barlet Jón MagnússonThis book is the second volume of a work on complex analytic cycles and the results, stated without proof in the first volume, are proved here. It begins with the construction of the reduced complex space formed by all compact cycles of a given complex space. Following this construction the main subjects of the book are: • Fundamental class of a cycle and relative fundamental class of an analytic family of cycles • Intersection theory with parameters on complex manifolds and more generally on nearly smooth complex spaces • Holomorphic currents on reduced complex spaces • Chow varieties and cycle spaces of quasi-projective complex spaces • Natural morphism from the Douady space to the cycle space • Holomorphic convexity in cycle spaces and integration of $\bar{partial}$-cohomology classes on cycles • Strong Kählerianity of cycle spaces of Kähler manifolds • Numerous important applications of cycle space theory Preliminaries needed in the book in addition to the material of the first volume, for instance sheaf cohomology with support, are explained in detail, making this two-volume work quite self-contained. The French version of the present book was published in 2020 by the French Mathematical Society in the series Cours Spécialisés and during the translation process the authors have in many ways improved the original version.

As such, this book provides up-to-date research spanning the entire field to illuminate contemporary developments, and will be of value to demographers, sociologists, economists, and all those interested in understanding demographic change.
Beyond the Shelley Circle: The Clairmont Family and Its Descendants (Routledge Studies in Nineteenth Century Literature)
by Sharon L. JoffeBeyond the Shelley Circle: The Clairmont Family and Its Descendants will interest Shelley-circle researchers, life-writing scholars, and nineteenth-century historians alike. The Clairmont family’s connection to Mary Shelley began in 1801, when her father William Godwin married Mary Jane Vial. The combined family then included the future author of Frankenstein plus her half-sister Fanny, who had been left motherless by the death of Mary Wollstonecraft, and Vial’s two children, Charles and Claire Clairmont (a fifth child, William Godwin Junior, was born in 1803). In 1816, Mary would marry Percy Shelley, thereby creating the extended Wollstonecraft–Godwin–Shelley–Clairmont kinship circle. Despite the often-difficult relationship between Vial and her stepdaughters, the children in the blended family were close into adulthood. Beyond the Shelley Circle traces this history and that of the Clairmont family into the twenty-first century through various personal writings. It includes, in German transcription and English translation, with editorial notes, the previously unpublished journal of Ottilia Clairmont, the wife of Charles’s son, which describes her life in the Banat region in the 1860s. It uses this document and others for a fulsome discussion of life writing in the period, among women, and in literary circles. The book further connects the kinship coterie to other family studies, situating them in a vital tradition within literary studies.
Women’s Financial Capability and Financial Wellbeing: A Study on Community Based Organisations for Sustainable Development
by V. K. Parvathy Jyothi KumarThis book investigates the impact of financial capability and decision‑making ability on the financial wellbeing of women associated with community based organisations (CBOs). In light of the evolving socio‑economic landscape in South Asia and the growing gender disparity in poverty, there is an urgent need to address these issues at the grassroots level to achieve sustainable development. CBOs play a crucial role by providing a platform for women to discuss shared challenges, develop potential solutions and create livelihood opportunities.Drawing on data from Asia’s largest women’s community network, this book examines how Kudumbashree, as a successful model, can serve as a guiding framework for other community networks across South Asia. It also investigates how demographic factors such as age, marital status, education, income and family size influence women’s financial capability. Furthermore, this book delves into the financial wellbeing of women and explores how addressing their needs can contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).By examining global initiatives aimed at empowering women economically, this book offers valuable insights for policymakers, financial social workers, scholars and organisations dedicated to advancing financial wellbeing for women and promoting sustainable development.

The Digital Environment and Small States in Europe: Challenges, Threats, and Opportunities (Small State Studies)
by Viktorija Car Marta ZorkoThe Digital Environment and Small States in Europe delves into how the digital revolution intersects with global security dynamics and reshapes the geopolitical landscape. It sheds light on the geopolitical complexities inherent in the border regions of the European continent and proposes frameworks to better understand and engage with small state dynamics in international affairs. At the heart of this book is an examination of the transformative power of digitalization and virtualization, particularly pronounced in the context of small states. Traditionally, power was synonymous with territorial control, but in today’s world, influence extends into the virtual realm. Small states, despite their physical limitations, can leverage this virtual extension of territory to their advantage. However, realizing and strategically utilizing these advantages are essential for capitalizing on the opportunities presented. Conversely, small states lacking digital capabilities find themselves increasingly vulnerable in the virtual sphere, facing heightened security threats and challenges. Through a series of theoretical and case study-based chapters, this book offers insights into the strategies employed by small states to navigate these complexities and assert their influence on the global stage. Key themes explored include the impact of digitalization on geopolitical dynamics, the role of cybersecurity in safeguarding national interests, and the emergence of digital diplomacy as a tool for statecraft. The Digital Environment and Small States in Europe will be of great interest to scholars and students of international relations, geopolitics, and political science, as well as security, media, and communication studies. Additionally, policymakers and analysts involved in foreign policy and security affairs may find valuable insights in the book’s exploration of small state strategies and vulnerabilities.
