Fat Boy and the Champagne Salesman: Göring, Ribbentrop, and the Nazi Invasion of Poland

by Rush Loving Jr.

“A wonderfully researched, written, and fast-paced book about the inevitable march toward World War II, and the personalities who made it a reality.” —Fred Rasmussen, Baltimore SunFat Boy and the Champagne Salesman offers a compelling behind-the-scenes exploration of the road to World War II and the invasion of Poland by the Hitler’s Third Reich. Focusing on the personal power plays within Hitler’s inner circle, author Rush Loving details the struggle for Hitler’s approval, long before the battle for Poland had begun. The rivalry was between “Fat Boy,” the moniker given to Hermann Göring by his fellow Nazi generals, and “the Champagne Salesman,” Joachim von Ribbentrop, nicknamed for his previous career, and it was at the heart of Germany’s plans for the expansion of the Reich into Poland. Göring, founder of the Lüftwaffe and the man who oversaw the armaments industry, was convinced that any invasion of Poland would lead to war with England and France, who were committed to its defense. Von Ribbentrop, Hitler’s foreign minister, argued that the Allies would stand down and continue their policy of appeasement. Only one would be proven correct. An engrossing and dramatic tale, Fat Boy and the Champagne Salesman shows Göring and Ribbentrop playing a tug-of-war with Hitler’s will. Loving’s vivid narrative of the struggle between the two advisers lends a new understanding of the events leading to the opening days of World War II.“A fascinating, meticulously researched account of the infighting at the top of the Nazi hierarchy during the run-up to the opening act of World War II.”—Andrew Nagorski, Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs

Projects and Techniques for Metal Clay Jewelry: A Creative Approach to Making 13 Bracelets, Necklaces, Earrings, Findings and More

by Tamara Honaman

Metal Clay has been on the scene since the early 1990s but is still considered a new medium in the jewelry universe. While there are books, videos, and content on the market, there is room for more to be shared, especially with all the changes that have occurred in metal clay in the last decade+. The changes, developments, and expansions in the metal clays available on the market (base metal clays as well as other variants of silver), has also broadened the appeal of metal clay. Those who were originally not interested (primarily traditional metalsmiths) are appreciating the staying power of the material and exploring the benefits the clay can offer to their work. And those new to the field are embracing metal clay as it allows the person to create metal designs without the need for expensive metalsmithing tools. Finished metal clay attracts the eye as you&’re able to create designs with intricate details, fine texture, and you can achieve a high-polish finish. As soon as people realize they too can create beautiful designs from clay, they are drawn in! There really is nothing like working with &“clay&” and having it be transformed to metal through the simple application of heat. Having been part of the metal clay community since the late 90s, seeing first-hand the joy people have working with the material, helping them overcome their trepidations, convincing those hesitant to give a try, pushing the boundaries of the materials available, and translating that into teachable programs is what I bring to the table. My passion drives me to continue learning and sharing so others can be empowered to create.

Reclaiming Her Time: The Power of Maxine Waters

by R. Eric Thomas Helena Andrews-Dyer

Named a Best Political Book of the Year by The AtlanticIn the tradition of Notorious RBG, a lively, beautifully designed, full-color illustrated celebration of the life, wisdom, wit, legacy, and fearless style of iconic American Congresswoman Maxine Waters.“Let me just say this: I’m a strong black woman, and I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be undermined. I cannot be thought to be afraid of Bill O’Reilly or anyone.”—Maxine Waters To millions nationwide, Congresswoman Maxine Waters is a hero of the resistance and an icon, serving eye rolls, withering looks, and sharp retorts to any who dare waste her time on nonsense. But behind the Auntie Maxine meme is a seasoned public servant and she’s not here to play. Throughout her forty years in public service and eighty years on earth, U.S. Representative for California’s 43rd district has been a role model, a crusader for justice, a game-changer, a trailblazer, and an advocate for the marginalized who has long defied her critics, including her most vocal detractor, Donald J. Trump. And she’s just getting started. From her anti-apartheid work and support of affirmative action to her passionate opposition to the Iraq War and calls to hold Trump to account, you can count on Auntie Maxine to speak truth to power and do it with grace and, sometimes, sass. As ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee and one of the most powerful black women in America, she is the strong, ethical voice the country has always needed, especially right now.Reclaiming Her Time pays tribute to all things Maxine Waters, from growing up in St. Louis “too skinny” and “too black,” to taking on Wall Street during the financial crisis and coming out on top in her legendary showdowns with Trump and his cronies. Featuring inspiring highlights from her personal life and political career, beloved memes, and testimonies from her many friends and fans, Reclaiming Her Time is a funny, warm, and admiring portrait of a champion who refuses to stay silent in the face of corruption and injustice; a powerful woman who is an inspiration to us all.

Under the Radiant Hill: Life and the Land in the Remotest Highlands

by Robin Noble

The northern parish of Assynt boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. The mountains of Quinag and Suilven dominate a very varied landscape with wild, white hills inland and a complex, intricate moorland to the west. Here, rocky crags, boggy flows, innumerable lochs and burns, stretch to a coast of equal variety with long fjords, high cliffs and sandy beaches. Close to many of the crofting townships are dense areas of native woodland. In this book, Robin Noble, who has been intimately involved with this corner of the north-west Highlands of Scotland his whole life, celebrates its rugged beauty and shares many intimate encounters with the resident wildlife – including, golden eagles, otters, badgers and pine martens – which surrounded his cottage in its wooded glen under the ‘long mountain’ of Quinag. Assynt is also well known for its important role in the history of community land ownership, and Robin describes too his deep involvement with those who live there. He learned much from the old generation of shepherds and crofters whom he got to know in the 1960s, as well as from their children and incomers in later decades, and shared with them the challenges of living in a remote, fragile community.

Aster of Ceremonies: Poems

by JJJJJerome Ellis

A polyphonic new entry in Multiverse—a literary series written and curated by the neurodivergent—JJJJJerome Ellis’s Aster of Ceremonies beautifully extends the vision of his debut book and album, The Clearing, a “lyrical celebration of and inquiry into the intersections of blackness, music, and disabled speech” (Claudia Rankine).Aster of Ceremonies asks what rites we need now and how poetry, astir in the asters, can help them along. What is the relationship between fleeing and feeling? How can the voices of those who came before—and the stutters that leaven those voices—carry into our present moment, mingling with our own? When Ellis writes, “Bring me the stolen will / Bring me the stolen well,” his voice is a conduit, his “me” is many. Through the grateful invocations of ancestors—Hannah, Mariah, Kit, Jan, and others—and their songs, he rewrites history, creating a world that blooms backward, reimagining what it means for Black and disabled people to have taken, and to continue to take, their freedom.By weaving a chorus of voices past and present, Ellis counters the attack of “all masters of all vessels” and replaces it with a family of flowers. He models how—as with his brilliant transduction of escaped slave advertisements—we might proclaim lost ownership over literature and history. “Bring me to the well,” he chants, implores, channels. “Bring me to me.” In this bringing, in this singing, he proclaims our collective belonging to shared worlds where we can gather and heal.
