The Economics of Ideologies: Belief Systems and Ideologies in Rational Decision-making (Springer Studies in Alternative Economics)
by Thomas Gries Carina Burs Veronika MüllerMany of the major international and intrastate crises and conflicts, but also the threat to democratic principles, are driven by belief systems and ideologies. They fuel political polarization, which is particularly evident in the battleground of social media. Nevertheless, we hardly pay attention to ideologies, their narratives, functions and organizations in economic theory today. Ideologies as &“non-rational beliefs&” seem incompatible with rationality in economic models. Therefore, the book examines the role of ideologies and belief systems in individual decision-making behavior from an economic and rational perspective. Due to the fact that people have incomplete information, belief systems and ideologies fulfill a number of important functions. While ideologies themselves serve psychological needs, they are used as a cognitive framework for rational decision-making once they have been adopted through a Bayesian learning process. They influence decisions in a wide range of areas, from consumption and work to politics. This is where the role of ideological organizations becomes important, because they determine the ideological direction of the narratives and their dissemination. Thus, ideologies give a normative direction, for better or for worse. The &“quality&” of ideological leadership can be evaluated normatively on the basis of principles such as individual sovereignty and human dignity. A democratic discourse requires an information and communication system that enables an evaluation of precisely these ideologies, free from resource and information power.

Social Roots of Violent Extremism: Pathways and Trends in Europe (Contributions to Political Science)
by Francesco Antonelli Liana Maria Daher Valeria RosatoThis volume examines the environments that enable radicalization and extremism today, drawing from extensive European research, based on the Horizon 2020 project PARTICIPATION. Examining theoretical and practical studies, the book analyzes how the erosion of institutional integration, social participation, and political stability among marginalized groups can lead to feelings of deprivation, alienation, and self-victimization. In these environments, individuals - often from disadvantaged or immigrant backgrounds - rebuild their identities through extremism, finding a sense of belonging in radical, and sometimes violent ideas that are easily accessible online. The book further sheds light on this paradox of modern extremism: while extremists embrace technological tools like digital platforms, they reject core modern values such as personal freedom and cultural diversity. This volume argues for innovative approaches to radicalization, emphasizing prevention through the creation of inclusive social environments and critical dialogue on the role of digital technology in radical movements.

A Geopolitical Europe in the Making?: The EU’s Actorness in a (De-)Globalising World (Global Europe: Legal and Policy Issues of the EU’s External Action #5)
by Ramses A. Wessel Marek Neuman Thijs De ZeeThis edited book investigates whether ─ and if so, to what extent ─ the European Union began to turn its recently uttered ambition of becoming a geopolitical Union into practice. It does so by bringing a range of scholars from various institutions and disciplines ─ among others, political science, European law, European studies ─ together, asking them whether in their specific field, they can observe a geopolitical turn in the European Union's policy-making. The result of this intellectual endeavour can be found in this book; a book that makes a first attempt at empirically testing the Union's ability to effectively respond to ever- and rapidly-changing conditions for conducting international politics in a rule-based system. The volume is divided into two separate, yet mutually informing, parts. Part I consists of a series of empirical chapters assessing the EU's actorness vis-à-vis other regional powers, regional and international organisations. This is followed by several empirical snapshots looking into specific policy areas in Part II. As we combine the insights from both parts, we attempt to contribute to the debate on the changing nature of the European Union in challenging times. Our approach, then, is primarily an empirical one. And yet, building upon these conclusions, we are able to also draw conceptual conclusions about the EU's increasing geopolitical nature, or the lack thereof. These conclusions make this a relevant read not only for academics, but also for practitioners of European law and European integration. Marek Neuman is Assistant Professor in EU Foreign Policy and Jean Monnet Chair of European Politics and Governance at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Ramses A. Wessel is Professor of European Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Thijs de Zee is a PhD Candidate at the Faculty Campus Fryslân of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Chapter 3 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
Zielgruppen: Studierende und Lehrende (u.a. Soziale Arbeit, Sozialpädagogik, Pädagogik und Erziehungswissenschaft, Soziologie) Pädagogische Fachkräfte (u.a. der Schulsozialarbeit, Soziale Arbeit, Beratung, Schule und Bildung) Verwaltungsmitarbeiter*innen der Kommunen, Kreise und der Bildung Politische und zivilgesellschaftliche Akteur*innen
