Marketing the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus: Testing Message Effects with American College Students
by Q.J. YaoThis book helps readers understand the persuasiveness of popular message levels (agenda, knowledge, attitude, and behavioral intention) and factors (sidedness, conclusiveness, and gain- or loss-framing) in communicating critical environmental issues, particularly the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus. The WEF Nexus is a relatively new environmental concept that has been deemed by leading scientists and international organizations as an effective solution to water, energy, and food shortages and crises. It is vital to garner sufficient public support for the concept to function. This book addresses questions such as: How can we strategically and effectively communicate the WEF Nexus to the public to raise necessary public awareness and supportive attitudes, avoid unnecessary politicization, and secure public resources to cope with the water, energy, and food issues before they drastically deteriorate? How can some commonly used message factors affect the persuasiveness of the WEF-nexus strategic communications, and how may those communications be processed by the audience? These questions are answered with data from the National College Student Science Literacy Survey (NCSSLS), a relatively representative survey of American college students in 2016-2018, with a survey experiment included in its second round.

Holy Men of the Electromagnetic Age: A Forgotten History of the Occult
by Raphael CormackAn international history of the uncanny in the 1920s and 1930s. The interwar period was a golden age for the occult. Spiritualists, clairvoyants, fakirs, Theosophists, mind readers, and Jinn summoners all set out to assure the masses that just as newly discovered invisible forces of electricity and magnetism determined the world of science, unseen powers commanded an unknown realm of human potential Drawing on untapped sources in Arabic in addition to European ones, Raphael Cormack follows two of the most unusual and charismatic figures of this age: Tahra Bey, who took 1920s Paris by storm in the role of a missionary from the mystical East; and Dr. Dahesh, who transformed Western science to create a panreligious faith of his own in Lebanon. Traveling between Paris, New York, and Beirut while guiding esoteric apprenticeships among miracle-working mystics in Egypt and Istanbul, these men reflected the desires and anxieties of a troubled age. As Cormack demonstrates, these forgotten holy men, who embodied the allure of the unexplained in a world of dramatic change, intuitively speak to our unsettling world today
Modern Arab Kingship: Remaking the Ottoman Political Order in the Interwar Middle East
by Adam MestyanHow the &“recycling&” of the Ottoman Empire&’s uses of genealogy and religion created new political orders in the Middle EastIn this groundbreaking book, Adam Mestyan argues that post-Ottoman Arab political orders were not, as many historians believe, products of European colonialism but of the process of &“recycling empire.&” Mestyan shows that in the post–World War I Middle East, Allied Powers officials and ex-Ottoman patricians collaborated to remake imperial institutions, recycling earlier Ottoman uses of genealogy and religion in the creation of new polities, with the exception of colonized Palestine. These polities, he contends, should be understood not in terms of colonies and nation-states but as subordinated sovereign local states—localized regimes of religious, ethnic, and dynastic sources of imperial authority. Meanwhile, governance without sovereignty became the new form of Western domination.Drawing on previously unused Ottoman, French, Syrian, and Saudi archival sources, Mestyan explores ideas and practices of creating composite polities in the interwar Middle East and, in doing so, sheds light on local agency in the making of the forgotten Kingdom of the Hijaz, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, the first Muslim republic. Mestyan considers the adjustment of imperial Islam to a world without a Muslim empire, discussing the post-Ottoman Egyptian monarchy and the intertwined making of Saudi Arabia and the State of Syria in the 1920s and 1930s.Mestyan&’s innovative analysis shows how an empire-based theory of the modern political order can help refine our understanding of political dynamics throughout the twentieth century and down to the turbulent present day.

He offers insight onhow to understand ourselves more deeply so that we are free to connect with others;how shared pain can bridge even the widest gaps between two very different people;how marriage and fatherhood have shaped his understanding of vulnerability and connection;how the God who longs for relationship with us is the answer to our need for connection; andin an all-new chapter, how radical generosity, service, and community building can lead to an even greater depth of relationship. In a disconnected world, it is possible to have lasting purpose and peace. You are already known. You are already loved. You are already seen. Discover how to live out how much you matter as you embrace the true meaning of your one incredible life.

Handbook of Magnetic Material for Motor Drive Systems
by Keisuke FujisakiThis handbook, which builds on the previously published book, Magnetic Material for Motor Drive Systems, focuses on how to use magnetic material for electrical motor drive systems, especially electrical vehicles and power electronics. The volume is aimed at researchers and engineers working towards the realization of more efficient and down-sized motor drive systems by utilizing magnetic materials with complex properties based on the operation of motors and power electronics. The magnetic materials and the motor drive system have mutual interactive characteristics due to electromagnetically coupling with the same current and voltage, so it is extremely important to have both viewpoints. In this handbook, for that purpose, the fundamental concepts of electrical engineering and magnetic science and engineering are described in detail. At the same time, in order to develop new materials from the viewpoint of motor drive systems and to utilize the magnetic material, this handbookwidely discusses the multi-scale analysis technology that traces back to the magnetic domain structure and first-principles calculations, the basics of current materials and new magnetic materials, the fundamental magnetic measurement technology of magnetic material, and the application of magnetic technology. It is expected that the knowledge gained through this title will greatly contribute to the coming EV society.
Conservation in Chilean Patagonia: Assessing the State of Knowledge, Opportunities, and Challenges (Integrated Science #19)
by Juan Carlos Castilla María José Martínez-Harms David Tecklin Juan J. Armesto ZamudioChilean Patagonia, located at the southwestern tip of South America, is one of the last regions on earth where highly intact environments predominate. With a coastline that extends along some 100,000 km of fjords, channels, and islands, it has one of the world´s most extensive marine-terrestrial interfaces. Local place-based and Indigenous cultures and management practices are a vital presence across the region, while the long and rich history of conservation efforts have resulted in officially protected areas covering over 50% of the land and 41% of the coastal-marine area. However, Chilean Patagonia is increasingly facing anthropogenic pressures associated with increased infrastructure and access, salmon aquaculture, extractive industries, and the spread of invasive exotic species. Despite widespread recognition that Chilean Patagonia represents a unique global reservoir of socio-natural heritage, to date there has been no region-wide assessment of the scientific evidence of the conservation status of its ecosystems or the priorities for their effective conservation.Conservation in Chilean Patagonia: Assessing the state of knowledge, opportunities, and challenges is the first book to gather and synthesize the available scientific and socio-environmental information related to Patagonian conservation. It presents the collaborative work of 68 researchers and local experts, representing a range of specialties and perspectives, including: biology, ecology, socio-ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, anthropology, economics, geography, tourism, cryosphere, oceanography, climate and global change. The book’s 18 chapters focus on the status of key ecosystems and conservation tools, and provide recommendations toward the construction of a renewed, inclusive, and integrated conservation agenda for the Chilean Patagonian region. It provides an essential primer for anyone interested in the future of this ecologically vital region, as well as lessons on interdisciplinary collaboration and integrated analysis of conservation issues useful for conservation practitioners and scholars. This is an open access book. This book is a translation of an original Spanish edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Responses of Plants to Soil Flooding
by Jun-Ichi Sakagami Mikio NakazonoIn this book, leading researchers from this field systematically explain the latest research results on anaerobic responses in plants. The book is characterized by its in-depth coverage of the tolerance functions of plants under hypoxic conditions from a variety of perspectives, with a particular focus on research areas related to molecular biology and genetics. Although drought responses have dominated water stress research in the past, recent floods and attempts to introduce new cropping systems have made it necessary to take measures against excessive water stress injury, and systematic research is needed for this purpose. From this point of view, the approach taken in this book is new and interesting in that it covers basic research and adaptation technologies in the field, and can be applied to various different situations. The focus of this book is how plants can adapt to poor environments and improve productivity under the conditions of soil hypoxia caused by excess water, such as heavy rains and typhoons. From this point of view, the reader will be able to understand the various adaptations of plants to climate change, which will clarify the future directions of research and show the possibility of applying the knowledge and techniques gained in this book to the field. The Sixth Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2021) warns that global warming will proceed faster than previously assumed and that all regions of the world will face increasing changes. “Climate Resilient Development” has been proposed as a key phrase to combat global warming, and it is important to identify the adaptive capacity of plants and improve it where possible. In this regard, the publication of this book, which includes ideas for mitigating flood damage caused by global warming, is extremely important, timely, and rational.
