Jahrhunderts von den christlichen Großkirchen gefördert wurde. Zum anderen wird eine Theorie der Verflechtung dargelegt, mit welcher die Tradition der Differenzierungstheorie von Max Weber bis heute überboten wird. Dies erlaubt es, die Religionsforschung von der harschen Kritik seit Thomas Luckmann zu lösen und Disziplinen wie die Religionssoziologie, die Kirchen- und Pastoralsoziologie, die katholische Zukunftswissenschaft sowie die evangelische Sozialethik nicht mehr als Hilfswissenschaften der Kirchenführung zu betrachten. Stattdessen wird der Blick frei für normative Leitideen, die hinter den großen Herausforderungen der Säkularisierung, Urbanisierung, Modernisierung, Globalisierung und Individualisierung seit 1945 standen und unter welchen sich die Akteure aus Sozialwissenschaft, Theologie und Kirche versammelten.
