They nurture local communities while creating new ones of their own. Bookshops are powerful spaces, but they are also endangered ones. In The Bookshop, we see the stakes: what has been, and what might be lost.Evan Friss&’s history of the bookshop draws on oral histories, archival collections, municipal records, diaries, letters, and interviews with leading booksellers to offer a fascinating look at this institution beloved by so many. The story begins with Benjamin Franklin&’s first bookstore in Philadelphia and takes us to a range of booksellers including the Strand, Chicago&’s Marshall Field & Company, the Gotham Book Mart, specialty stores like Oscar Wilde and Drum and Spear, sidewalk sellers of used books, Barnes & Noble, Amazon Books, and Parnassus. The Bookshop is also a history of the leading figures in American bookselling, often impassioned eccentrics, and a history of how books have been marketed and sold over the course of more than two centuries—including, for example, a 3,000-pound elephant who signed books at Marshall Field&’s in 1944.The Bookshop is a love letter to bookstores, a charming chronicle for anyone who cherishes these sanctuaries of literature, and essential reading to understand how these vital institutions have shaped American life—and why we still need them.

The Meaningful City: Reading Barcelona’s Urban Landscape
by James DouetThis book presents a new way of examining cities to reveal the many and varied meanings which are written into urban landscapes. As the title suggests, urban areas are full of messages and communications, with signs and symbols incorporated into buildings, structures and plans. Taking the rich architectural and urbanistic chronicle of Barcelona as a model, the author shows how different social groups, consciously and unconsciously, have written their values and interests on to the city. The narrative opens with the forced reshaping by military engineers of the former capital of Catalunya after 1714, and extends up to an analysis of the many competing actors and agencies which attempt to impose their perspectives on the contemporary city. It scrutinizes how deep cultural and social changes such as the Enlightenment, Romanticism, the Industrial Revolution, de-industrialisation and globalisation can be read in the urban environment, as well as more intentional effects of major urban development projects including the Ciutadella fortress, the Rambles, the universal exhibitions of 1888 and 1929, the Sagrada Família, the Barcelona Model of urban renewal, the 22@ innovation district and the superil·les sustainability plans. Informed by the approach of critical urban studies, the narrative is written in a clear style to engage readers with many different interests, students, urbanists and design professionals as well as residents and visitors to the city. Drawing on research from varied academic fields published in English, Catalan and Spanish, it is illustrated with colour photographs of many of the buildings and sites that have made Barcelona a global resource for understanding contemporary cities.

Shelter and Storm: At Home in the Driftless
by Tamara DeanLiving mindfully with nature during a time of uncertainty In the midst of the environmental crises of the early twenty-first century, Tamara Dean sought a way to live lightly on the planet. Her quest drew her to a landscape unlike any other: the Driftless area of Wisconsin, a region untouched by glaciers, marked by steep hills and deeply carved valleys, capped with forests and laced with cold, spring-fed streams. There, she confronted, in ways large and small, the challenges of meeting basic needs while facing the ravages of climate change—an experience at once soul-stirring and practical that she recounts in Shelter and Storm. Dean&’s boundless curiosity and gift for storytelling imbue these essays with urgency and a sense of adventure. She invites readers to share in her discoveries while hunting for water, learning that a persistent weed could be food, or burning a hayfield to recreate a prairie. Contending with the fallout of fires, floods, and tornadoes, she offers responses to natural disasters that reflect the importance of community, now and for generations to come. Whether tracking down a rare, blue-glowing firefly, engineering a beaver-friendly waterway to appease a dying neighbor, or building a house of earthen blocks, Dean unites personal experience with science and history, presenting a perspective as informative as it is compelling. Keenly attentive to the stakes for our planet&’s future—and the implications of extreme weather, shifting agricultural practices, and political divides—Shelter and Storm illuminates a thoughtful way forward for anyone concerned about climate change and its far-reaching consequences or for anyone searching, as Dean has, for a more sustainable way to live. Optimization Methods in Manufacturing Processes: A Machine-Generated Literature Overview
by Anand J. KulkarniThis book presents the result of an innovative challenge, to create a systematic literature overview driven by machine-generated content. Questions and related keywords were prepared for the machine to query, discover, collate and structure by Artificial Intelligence (AI) clustering. The AI-based approach seemed especially suitable to provide an innovative perspective as the topics are indeed both complex, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, for example, climate, planetary and evolution sciences. Springer Nature has published much on these topics in its journals over the years, so the challenge was for the machine to identify the most relevant content and present it in a structured way that the reader would find useful. The automatically generated literature summaries in this book are intended as a springboard to further discoverability. They are particularly useful to readers with limited time, looking to learn more about the subject quickly and especially if they are new to the topics. Springer Nature seeks to support anyone who needs a fast and effective start in their content discovery journey, from the undergraduate student exploring interdisciplinary content to Master- or PhD-thesis developing research questions, to the practitioner seeking support materials, this book can serve as an inspiration, to name a few examples. It is important to us as a publisher to make the advances in technology easily accessible to our authors and find new ways of AI-based author services that allow human-machine interaction to generate readable, usable, collated, research content.
Therapie der unipolaren Depression - Ergotherapie, Soziotherapie und andere psychotherapeutisch mitgeprägte Verfahren

Generalized Homogeneity in Systems and Control Volume I: Finite-Dimensional Systems (Communications and Control Engineering)
by Andrey PolyakovThis book is an introduction to the theory of homogeneous systems, useful for the simplification of many types of nonlinear control problems. It propounds methods that can be employed when linearization proves unsuitable and provides a unified approach to stability and robustness analysis, control and observer design, and system discretization. The second edition splits the coverage of homogeneity, allowing expanded coverage of finite-dimensional systems (in this book) and infinite-dimensional systems (in Volume II). The results are better systematized and easier for readers to study and assimilate. The first volume details the concepts of finite-time and fixed-time stability. Key features of the book include: mathematical models of dynamical systems in finite-dimensional spaces; the theory of linear dilations in Euclidean spaces; homogeneous control and estimation; extensively expanded and original chapters with entirely new treatments of digitization, safety-critical systems, neural networks, and multiagent control; simple methods for an upgrade of existing linear control laws; numerical schemes for a consistent digital implementation of homogeneous algorithms; and experimental results that confirm an improvement of PID controllers. Illustrative examples—numerical results, computer simulations, and real experiments—support all the theoretical material. The coverage of finite-dimensional systems presented in this book is of interest to graduate students of control theory from engineering and applied-mathematical backgrounds and to practising control engineers.

Challenging Contemporary Thinking on Play
by Victoria De Rijke Rebecca SinkerThis book explores the leaps and overlaps of play and aesthetic activity, across theories of feminism and posthumanism, neuroscience, ethology, pedagogy and postdevelopmental thinking, sociologies of space, game design and digital play from the very young to artist’s practice. It concludes with an entirely original exploration of dark play, and its complexities. As a series of interview or conversation pieces, key thinkers in each area of focus toy with positions around their field’s identification of play, proactively countering their Eurocentric demographic by drawing on examples of playful and arts practice/’research acts’ from as diverse a global reach as possible. Drawing on an interdisciplinary methodology including phenomenological, materialist, posthumanist and arts practice as a form of research, the book challenges and criticizes over-used or lazy applications of play and bring theories of possibility and thinking into the arena of culture within contemporary conceptual reference. Formulaic and production-led education is critiqued, arguing that to engage more fully with pedagogies of play and its in-built interdisciplinarity and criticality carries risks but with that, transformative practices.
