The Conquest of Istanbul and the Manipulation of Architecture: The Islamist-nationalist Rhetoric of Conquest and Melancholy (Routledge Research in Architecture)
by Berin F. GürThis book explores the contemporary memory of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1453. It focuses on how the conquest is remembered by Islamist-nationalist imagination in Turkey today and how architecture plays a role in shaping this memory, underscoring its susceptibility to political manipulation.Discussing Islamist-nationalist rhetoric of Istanbul’s conquest through the conceptual framework of melancholy—a significant theme in the history of ideas—the argument posits that this narrative is a politically driven endeavor fueled by paranoia, producing melancholy over the conquest of Istanbul. This book redefines melancholy as ‘a politically manipulated project’, which anchors the imagery of conquest to spatial and architectural symbols of mourning while creating imaginary lost objects. Architecture becomes the book’s subject as the bearer of clues to searching for lost objects and as a spatial-political tool of conquest rhetoric, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the Panorama 1453 History Museum. As various groups with differing ideologies and identities continue to feel the impact of the conquest, this book also examines the ‘other’ side of the event—specifically, how the Greeks commemorate the fall of Constantinople, recognizing it as a dark memory from their perspective. This book targets diverse audiences in cultural studies, social sciences, arts, and humanities—including architecture, history, anthropology, and political studies—interested in Southeast Europe and Islamic societies.

The book strengthens our understanding of what risk science is and how it has evolved by exploring fundamental topics such as risk characterization, risk perception, risk communication, risk handling and decision-making and concludes with reflection on the future of risk science, and in particular what we can learn from its history.A History of Risk Science will be essential reading for risk researchers and graduate students as well as scholars from associated fields applying risk-related analysis to their work.
Life Writing and Translation: Indian Perspectives
by Mukul ChaturvediThe steady rise of auto/biographical narrations across various Indian languages, including English and translations into English, as different forms of life writing marks a moment of social and political ferment. This book aims to explore the expansive field of life writing, both as a practice and a genre of literature, and its intersections with translation. Addressing the affinities between life writing and translation, and the emancipatory possibilities it offers, can shift the focus from individual texts to a space for encounter between languages, identities, and cultures.Focusing on how life writing in India has emerged as a distinct literary and publishing phenomenon in recent times, the volume traces the diversity and richness of the various bhasha traditions of life writing and looks at how they have gained recognition both in regional languages and in translation. Traversing various languages, the book examines memoirs of incarceration and exile, narratives of marginality, literary memoirs, biography, and oral songs of protest among others, and engages with life writing’s affective and political potential in documenting everyday lives and struggles, and fostering solidarity among readers. Exploring the ways life writing and translation are mutually implicated, it deliberates on the ethical, political, and translational significance of life writing and seeks to spark academic interest and further research in this field. This volume will serve as a rich resource for university students, researchers, and academics of literature, history, sociology, cultural studies, translation studies, and comparative studies, and those who are interested in South Asian literature.
The Political Economy of Foreign Direct Investment in Korea: Evolution, Dynamics, and Contradictions (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy)
by Richard Lee You-il Lee Yoon-Jong JangOne of the most spectacular phenomena in the South Korean political economy has been the remarkable escalation of international capital investment, particularly inward foreign direct investment (FDI). This book provides an in-depth look at the evolution of FDI in Korea, from the late 1990s to the present day.Charting Korea’s transition from state-led capitalism to a more liberalized market, this book assesses the complex interplay between government policy, foreign capital inflows, and multinational corporations (MNCs). It analyzes the key economic policies of the past as well as more recent measures by the Moon Jae-in and Yoon Suk Yeol administrations. The book then conducts an analysis of the socio-economic, cultural, and political dynamics that shape strategies of MNCs today. The book draws on 36 interviews with CEOs of foreign companies operating in Korea to seek their insights into the realities of doing business in Korea. It closes by highlighting the current challenges Korea faces today in integrating into the international economy and suggests solutions for sustaining its economic growth. This book will appeal to scholars of political economy, Korean studies, and economic development. It will also interest business leaders and policymakers seeking a deeper understanding of insights into Korea’s economic climate.
Transitional Justice and the Kurdish Conflict: A Grassroots Approach (Transitional Justice)
by Nisan AlıcıCentralising the experience of victims-survivors and other grassroots actors, this book examines how transitional justice can be used in transforming the Kurdish conflict in Turkey.Despite 40 years of armed conflict, its violent effects on Kurdish people and the wider society, and strong demands for justice, there is little work on transitional justice in the context of the Kurdish conflict. In response, this book explores the limits and potentials of transitional justice in Turkey’s ongoing conflict by focusing on the perspectives of victims-survivors and grassroots justice activists. Such perspectives have received little attention in the transitional justice literature, even as it has exhibited an increasing interest in contexts where no formal transition has taken place. But, as this book demonstrates, the Kurdish conflict reveals the importance, not only of documenting these perspectives, but in seeing how those most affected by conflict are able to transform their experience into political action. Drawing on Kurdish victim-survivors’ own understandings of their experiences and activists’ perceptions of the potential of transitional justice, the book thereby addresses, and advocates, the transformative potential of bottom-up, grassroots-level efforts to deliver transitional justice goals. This book will appeal to transitional justice scholars and practitioners, those with interests in the role of social movements, as well as others with interests in the Kurdish conflict or in Middle Eastern politics more generally.
Private Law and the UK Supreme Court: Key Cases and Decisions
by Lewis Graham Jenny RussellThis volume brings together expert contributors across different fields of private law to comment on key decisions by the UK Supreme Court (UKSC).Each author explores their case’s content, as well as its broader implications for private law as a field and the Supreme Court as an institution. The work is divided into the following areas: tort, contract and unjust enrichment, and property law and equity. Providing expert commentary on recent authorities of the highest level in one place, the collection will enable readers interested in these areas to conveniently locate analysis that will aid them in their work. Taken together, the contributions enable identification of themes relating to continuity and change, the role of policy in private law, the structure of private law, neglecting differences in bargaining power, and the Court’s relationship with the lower courts. As such, it will be an invaluable resource for academics, researchers, practitioners, judges, and policymakers.
Real World Economics: Methodological, Theoretical and Critical Issues (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy)
by Victor A. BekerThe starting point of this book is that economics is an applied science: a tool to understand the real-world economy and a guide for economic policy. In contrast to the unrealistic and artificial models of neoclassical economics, the book argues that the point of departure for economic theory should be the real world with realistic assumptions being made. The book explores the theoretical underpinnings of this real-world economics including the concepts of similarity (the relationship between economic models and real-world phenomena), evolution (economic change is a historical process in which recurrent patterns of growth, maturation, and decline exist), and uncertainty (the absence of knowledge of the full set of circumstances faced and the probabilities associated with them). Adopting a real-world approach also means accepting that human beings are cognitively constrained. They do not optimize, they satisfy and, thus, a real-world economic theory should incorporate bounded rationality. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the economy, including readers from economics and across the social sciences. In this respect, it also includes some reflections on the failure of Third Way ideas to deliver on their promises. Having been incapable of changing the course impressed on the economy by the neoliberal experiment, that failure paved the way for a resurgence of nationalism, populism, and alternatives to liberal democracy, subjects analyzed in the last section of the volume.
Embracing Faith and Desire: Queer and Feminist Engagements with Islam and Christianity as Lived Religions (Gendering the Study of Religion in the Social Sciences)
by Viola Thimm and Ferdiansyah ThajibEmbracing Faith and Desire investigates the intersection of gender, sexuality, and religion from an anthropological lens. Taking women’s, non-binary, and queer religious life-worlds in Muslim and Christian contexts as a cross-cutting research theme, the book brings together scholars from different disciplines and regional contexts who are interested in the interconnectedness of gender dynamics, queerness, and religious principles. The explosive growth of contesting religions, especially in a Christian-Muslim context, represents a distinctively religious-political dynamic within globalization. It disrupts the global world order, influences hegemonic negotiations within and across nation-states, and shapes self-imaginations and practices of social actors. Consequently, it carries far-reaching political, religious, economic, and social ramifications. Embracing Faith and Desire explores these ramifications on various levels. The volume thereby contributes to debates on intersectionality, queer, and religious approaches alike by showcasing how the scopes and scales of action and the constructive shaping of self-images, social relations, and political actions of people are fundamentally dependent upon religious, gendered, and sexualized backgrounds. Embedding the contributions in the anthropology of religion, anthropology of gender, and queer anthropology, the book reconfigures our understanding of lived religion through the lens of gendered and queered imaginations, practices, and ideologies.
The Social Construction of Kidnapping: A Critical Perspective (Routledge Studies in Crime and Society)
by Camilo Tamayo GomezMoving beyond simplistic and sensationalist portrayals of kidnapping, this book offers a critical and interdisciplinary analysis that examines kidnapping as a social, historical, cultural, and political phenomenon.Kidnapping is a profound violation of human rights that reshapes societies, disrupts governance, and inflicts lasting trauma on individuals and communities. In Colombia, kidnapping became an endemic feature of the armed conflict, leaving tens of thousands of families in a perpetual state of uncertainty and fear. Through an innovative blend of criminology, sociology, transitional justice, surveillance studies, and collective memory epistemologies, this book unpacks kidnapping as a crime of (im)mobility, a strategy of war, and a serious human rights violation. Drawing on fifteen years of research, including statistical analysis, archival work, and interviews with former hostages, ex-combatants, and policymakers, it reveals how kidnapping shaped Colombia’s conflict and its ongoing efforts toward justice, truth, and reconciliation. By exploring its patterns, motivations, and legacies, this book not only sheds light on Colombia’s experience but also contributes to global discussions on transitional justice, collective memory, and the strategies societies adopt to confront mass victimisation. The Social Construction of Kidnapping is essential reading for scholars and students of criminology, transitional justice, human rights, political violence, and Latin American studies, as well as policymakers, human rights advocates, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how societies confront legacies of mass victimisation and forge paths toward accountability and healing.
Diversity in Architecture: Intersectionality, Affective Politics, and Creating Change (Minorities in Architecture)
by Jan Smitheram Akari Nakai KiddDiversity in Architecture: Intersectionality, Affective Politics, and Creating Change explores diversity in architecture through an intersectional lens. It examines how overlapping individual identities, cultural ideologies, and institutional practices shape the profession.Divided into two parts, this book first explores how values, norms, and ideologies are constructed, circulated, and reinforced through media representations – both from without and from within. The second leans into voices from academics and architects within spaces of education and practice, who share their lived experiences navigating power structures and affective politics that marginalise diverse voices. Considering praxis and actions to create change where care is central, it asks: what happens if we bring intersectionality to the picture of diversity in architecture – through media, education, practice? How can affective solidarity and relationality foster change? What role does intersectional care play in dismantling systemic barriers and reimagining a more inclusive future? Written in dialogue with, and for architectural academics, practitioners, students, as well as wider audiences invested in diversity, this book opens its readers to the importance of mobilising diversity in architecture through intersectionality and affect, towards lasting change.

Postcolonial Copyright Law: Lessons on Community and Coloniality from Thailand (Intellectual Property, Theory, Culture)
by Mespiti PoolsavasdiThis book appraises postcolonial perspectives to rethink the meaning of copyright and makes suggestions for its future within the global landscape of intellectual property law.Drawing on the experience of Thailand as a case study, a country with a unique yet marginal position in discussions on colonialism, the book offers valuable insights for the international field of copyright law. Thai copyright law emerged in an era when the threat of European colonial powers inspired local ruling elites to embark on a quest for modernisation and establish a modern absolutist state. One can observe similar dynamics in the recent promotion of Thailand’s Creative Economy. Contrary to these top-down developments, the book argues for greater attention to attitudes and practices on the ground. Taking an interdisciplinary approach informed by film studies, area studies, decolonial studies, and legal sociology, the book makes a case to redefine copyright as a community resource. The book will be of interest to researchers in the field of copyright law, postcolonial and decolonial studies, and sociolegal studies.
