Distributed Free Improvisation: A Cultural Affective-Semiotic Perspective on Creativity (Palgrave Studies in Creativity and Culture)
by Diogo MonzoThis book presents a new model to visualize and understand the creative process in free improvisation: the Interactive Dimensions of the Creative Flow (IDCF). Drawing on theoretical work on distributed creativity and the author&’s background as a professional pianist, this short monograph establishes provocative dialogues between the field of music and the cultural psychology of semiotic dynamics to investigate human interactions involved in the act of creating. New empirical data and literature research on improvisation are used to discuss the historical and sociocultural factors behind collective and collaborative processes. In this context, the Distributed Free Improvisation Model offers a new theoretical and methodological innovation to the study of musical improvisation, which is presented as the result of a musical practice that develops in a community, in sociocultural contexts, through multiple interactions from which the senses and meanings of what is produced emerge. An inspiring read for students, professionals, and researchers in the field of cultural psychology, music improvisation, and creativity studies, this book opens new pathways to the study of creative processes and affective semiosis.

Transformative Museum Experiences (Springer Series on Cultural Computing)
by Arnold Vermeeren Licia Calvi Amalia SabiescuFollowing on the volume Museum Experience Design (2018), this book acknowledges the changing role of museums in society with a focus on designing experiences as vehicles for transformation. We look at transformation through a systemic perspective, anchored in the experience that museums offer to visitors. One facet of our exploration regards the museum experience itself as an instrument for change. At this level we conceptualise what we mean by a transformative experience and look at design approaches specifically geared towards inducing transformation. We then turn attention towards the way recent changes in the socio-political and cultural context reverberated in structural and functional changes inside the museum and connected institutions and communities, with shifting museum identities and new forms of cooperation emerging. Finally, we zoom in on the role of technology in the making of transformative museum experiences, looking at opportunities and affordances but also calling for an ethical approach to integration of technology in museum practice.

Trans-speakerism: A Collection of Empirical Explorations (Routledge Applied Linguistics)
by Hiratsuka, Edited by TakaakiThis pioneering exploration of trans-speakerism takes readers on a journey that redefines the foundations of language education discourse. This edited volume serves as a vital contribution—bringing together assorted empirical studies and discussions contributed by scholars with various linguistic backgrounds and scholarly experiences from around the world to confront and deconstruct the enduring influence of native-speakerism.At the heart of this work is the innovative concept of trans-speakerism, which moves beyond historical bifurcated markers for language speakers. Via the adoption of all-embracing terminology—global speakers of English (GSEs), global teachers of English (GTEs), and global Englishes researchers (GERs)—we propose a richer, more contextual understanding that shines a light on individual agency and multiplicity. This volume therefore stands out not only for its theoretical insights but also for its ability to inspire change. We demonstrate new ways to visualize entrenched power dynamics in language education by asserting the strengths and experiences of all practitioners and researchers, whilst honoring their multifaceted identities beyond reductive linguistic categorizations.Framing language education and its related fields through the prism of trans-speakerism unveils new possibilities for both practitioners and researchers to refurbish traditional hierarchies and herald a future of inclusive excellence.

Reforming Lessons: Why English Schools Have Improved Since 2010 and How This Was Achieved
by Robert Peal Nick GibbReforming Lessons provides a first-hand account of the ambitious programme of reform that has led to a transformation in English schools since 2010 and seen pupils rise through the ranks of international comparison tests such as PIRLS and PISA.Co-authored by former Schools Minister Nick Gibb and Headteacher Robert Peal, the book explores the key principles behind the reforms and reveals the impact they had on school leadership, accountability, teaching methods, curriculum design, and pupil behaviour. Addressing the long legacy of ‘progressive’ approaches to teaching in English schools, and the development of evidence-led alternatives, the book shows that approaches to education such as 'warm-strict', 'teacher-led instruction', and 'knowledge-rich curriculum' have been simultaneously both controversial and hugely successful. Chapters cover: Reforms to the primary curriculum—phonics and mathematical mastery The return of rigour in the secondary curriculum School structures—academies and free schools Academic standards Grassroot reforms Changes to teacher training and the introduction of the Early Career Framework Providing a fascinating insight into the major reforms that have shaped England’s school system and the drivers behind them, this is essential reading for anyone working in the education sector, policy-makers, and those interested in education reform.

Beyond Health Capacity: Spatial Practices in Inclusive Design
by Ulysses Sean VanceBeyond Health Capacity: Spatial Practices in Inclusive Design sheds light on the systemic challenges communities with limited access to medical support and health maintenance have endured. It emphasizes how approaching medical interventions through non-traditional health facilities can positively impact health's social and environmental impact. Health capacity is an emerging consideration for optimizing a building design to meet health criteria based on physical, virtual, historical, or social space. These emerging practices can be focused on by interrogating the role of planning, construction, and urban design in addressing public health needs, alongside considering access and social justice as an agency in design. This book reflects on past and present efforts interrogating the practical application of inclusive design practices in resolving the spatial challenges of health reform.By focusing on examples experienced during the pandemic and after, each chapter offers an overview documenting these experiences as approaches to these new competencies, reimagining urbanism around health, and proposing new criteria for the future of healthcare. This book is essential for students and practitioners working in architecture, community planning, urban design, landscape architecture, and public health.

Parties and Prejudice: The Normalization of Antiminority Rhetoric in US Politics
by Maneesh AroraAn essential guide to how the interactions between social norms, party politics, and expressions of prejudice are driving contemporary politics. Antiminority rhetoric in American politics has grown more overt. What were once fringe comments on Stormfront have now become typical campaign appeals from many mainstream politicians. If there was ever a doubt, this is a poignant reminder that the boundaries of what is “acceptable” and “unacceptable” to say and do are fluid and socially enforced. In Parties and Prejudice, Maneesh Arora offers a broad framework for understanding this new political terrain. Arora argues that the interaction between social norms and party politics determines what the political consequence of prejudicial speech will be. He illuminates this nuanced relationship by showing that norms vary based on the targeted minority group and the intended audience. Drawing on experiments, survey data, news coverage, and real-world examples, Parties and Prejudice examines the distinctive ways that egalitarian/inegalitarian norms have developed—within each party—for Black, Muslim, and LGBTQ+ Americans. It is essential reading for understanding Donald Trump’s rise to power, the modern conservative agenda (including opposition to critical race theory and transgender rights), and threats to the development of a multiracial democracy.

Using GIS to Identify Opportunities for Improved Health in Urban Slums: The Applied Case of Midnapore, India (Global Perspectives on Health Geography)
by Bikash Dutta Manas Das Sutapa Rath Sutapa DasThis book offers geospatial modelling techniques for the analysis of healthcare in poor urban neighborhoods and of the ways that residents of these neighborhoods make healthcare choices and cope with deprivation. The authors use the case of Midnapore, India to explore the overall health infrastructure and the perceptions of residents of urban slums regarding the provision, utilization, and accessibility of the healthcare system through the application of geostatistics and geospatial techniques and modelling, with an eye towards reducing inequalities. The study described here can be used as a model for researchers, planners, NGOs, policymakers and government authorities to conduct similar analysis of other low-income urban neighborhoods. Also, this book may assist students in understanding the basic tools and techniques of applying GIS tools to study social problems.
