Tribalism and Democracy in Libya: State Building and Identity After Gaddafi (Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Politics)
by Rawia Ben KhayalThis book examines the political and social role of tribes in post-Gaddafi Libya, focusing on the current democratic state-building process. It integrates both quantitative and qualitative research methods, including a survey of 1,000 respondents and in-depth interviews with 14 prominent Libyan figures. The study is supported by a comprehensive review of the historical development of Libyan tribes, revealing their longstanding prominence in local governance. Drawing from various International Relations (IR) theories—such as Realism, Constructivism, Liberalism, and Feminism—and interdisciplinary fields like anthropology, history, psychology, and literature, the book argues that while tribalism can challenge democratic state-building, especially in areas like national security and individual rights, it also provides vital social cohesion, or asabbiyyah, which is crucial for Libyan national identity. The book’s originality lies in its interdisciplinary approach, exploring tribalism's impact not only on Libya’s internal politics but also its international relations. It introduces concepts like liminality and tribal ambiguity to explain the complex and often contradictory attitudes towards tribalism in modern Libyan society. This analysis challenges Libyan readers to confront their ambivalence towards tribalism and reflects on its role in shaping Libya's future as it strives for democracy and global integration.

Human Alterity: A Brief History of Anthropological Thought
by Carles SalazarHuman Alterity: A Brief History of Anthropological Thought offers an introduction to the history of anthropological thought, encompassing eleven concise chapters that revolve around the concept of human alterity.Ever since the birth of our species, humans have wanted to understand people other than themselves. But what is an ‘alter’ human? Alter humans do not exist irrespective of the very concept of alterity that defines them as such. Chapters delve into various topics, including the discovery of America and the initial systematic theories regarding human alterity, the influences of rationalism and the Enlightenment, the impact of Romanticism, the trajectory of Social Evolutionism, the realm of Historicism, the tenets of Functionalism, explorations into the Culture and Personality school, examinations of Structuralism, analyses of political ideologies (such as Marxism, feminism, postcolonial studies, and postmodernism), and an exploration of current trends in cross-cultural studies.Human Alterity: A Brief History of Anthropological Thought will be of value to both new and advanced students of anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, social history, post-colonial studies and to anyone concerned with the belief, fantasy and reality of human diversity.

Exploring the Mesoamerican Subterranean Realm
by James E. Brady Cristina VerdugoExploring the Mesoamerican Subterranean Realm brings together recent work and interpretations on the use of underground cavities by Mesoamerica’s pre-Columbian cultures, demonstrating their invaluable cultural purpose. Case studies from across the region investigate the ways in which these highly charged points in the sacred landscape were the focus of countless political and religious activities. The volume expands the study of caves to focus on the broader realm of subterranean space, introducing the concept of the constructed subterranean, a space in which the Maya deliberately created sacred landmarks through excavation. Chapters critically examine chultuns, previously thought to be subterranean storage chambers, and sascaberas, previously considered mines, demonstrating that the traditional archaeological models are deeply flawed. A wealth of data on both features is used to envision a new sacred landscape filled with thousands of subterranean sacred landmarks. Natural caves are also examined; a survey conducted around the ancient site of Yaxchilan considers the obvious importance of large stalagmites set up in the site core as monuments. Long-distance pilgrimages to these caves fundamentally reevaluates the nature of pilgrimage and reveals an economic and political importance that structured settlement and activities around the pilgrimage sites. Finally, evidence is analyzed to show that the human bones recovered from Midnight Terror Cave, Belize, were the result of human sacrifice. Dealing equally with the archaeology of both natural and constructed subterranean spaces, Exploring the Mesoamerican Subterranean Realm challenges preconceived notions of these spaces and their meanings, dramatically shifting the field’s focus and extending the understanding of the critical importance of this “dark side” of archaeology.
Orienting to Chance: Probabilism and the Future of Social Theory
by Omar Lizardo Michael StrandExplores the implications of chance and uncertainty in social theory and offers a new interpretation of the sociological canon. Since the founding of the discipline, sociologists have endeavored to understand the structures of groups, organizations, and societies, and how these entities condition our behavior. While some of the foundational theorists saw these processes as largely deterministic, sociological theory has increasingly insisted on the importance of culture in shaping our position in and responses to social groups. In Orienting to Chance, sociologists Michael Strand and Omar Lizardo aim to show that the social order bears an unmistakable link to chance and urge us to think about how it conditions our actions. Strand and Lizardo provide a sweeping overview of a new social theory framework that they call probabilism. Using examples of probabilism in sociology, particularly in the work of Max Weber, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Pierre Bourdieu, they describe probabilism’s place in multiple fields of science. As the authors argue, their effort at redefinition and recovery helps position sociology as a field of the future, while also keeping it grounded in core issues of action, structure, culture, inequality, and inequity. By sharing these groundbreaking insights and revealing wider theoretical claims about mortality, fate, and technology in the contemporary era, Strand and Lizardo demonstrate how probabilism is an essential intervention for understanding the inevitable role of uncertainty in social life.

This book answers questions like:What does it take to be a true exemplar as a father, brother, husband, leader, coach, counselor, change agent, and wise man? What does it mean to stand for honesty, courage, and charity? And how can you stand especially at times when the culture and the world run counter to those values? Each of the seven biographies represents the life of a man who experienced the struggles and challenges to be strong in the face of forces and circumstances that would have destroyed the resolve of lesser men. Each of the seven men profiled—George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, John Paul II, and Charles Colson—call the reader to a more elevated walk and lifestyle, one that embodies the gospel in the world around us.

Effective Multimodal Interaction for Online and Hybrid Teaching: Data-driven Insights (Digital Education and Learning)
by Antonella GiacosaThis book provides educators (including but not limited to those at university level) with data-driven insights into video-mediated interaction. Drawing on extensive research on classroom interaction from a variety of theoretical and analytical perspectives, including four years of observing online university courses that began during the Covid-19 pandemic, the author provides deep insights into video-mediated interaction by comparing direct classroom observations with data provided by teachers and students via online questionnaires. The book clarifies how the newly experienced classroom contexts differ from traditional online and blended classes, then draws on the extensive experience of video-mediated instruction in terms of teacher-learner, learner-content, and learner-learner interaction to decipher what can be challenging and promising about interacting via a screen, specifically addressing multimodal interaction. It also provides practitioners with data-driven suggestions from the perspective of teachers and learners for improving teaching and learning in modern video-based educational contexts that are consistently different from the pre-pandemic idea of e-learning. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers in Applied Linguistics, Language Education and Higher Education more broadly, teachers in higher education institutions worldwide, and teacher education and training and institutional bodies responsible for improving teaching facilities.
