Antiliberal Internationalism in the Twentieth Century: Beyond Left and Right? (Routledge Studies in Fascism and the Far Right)
by Stefan Couperus Matthijs Lok Marjet Brolsma Robin De Bruin Rachel McElroy WhiteThis book shows how antiliberal discourse, thought, and mobilization have, in defiance of nationalist aims, been significantly shaped and determined in the international sphere, as new collaborations position themselves against the liberal order established after the fall of the Berlin Wall.Despite often drawing inspiration from nationalist movements and ideologies, antiliberalism is a phenomenon that transcends domestic contexts and settings in important ways. This collection of essays charts the many-sided aspects of twentieth-century internationalism and its contemporary developments across the globe. Without excluding well-known European sources of antiliberal internationalism, it decentres the European experience by exploring specific case studies from South and East Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Moreover, the volume abundantly demonstrates that “liberalism” and “anti-liberalism” cannot be considered as fixed entities as (anti)liberalism was, and is, as much defined by its enemies as by its advocates. This book is intended for scholars and students of International Studies, Intellectual History, Political History, Political Science, European Studies, and Global Studies, as well as for journalists and policymakers interested in contemporary Europe, cosmopolitanism, political polarization, and the traditions of the right and far right.

Decoloniality in the Break of Global Blackness: Movement, Method, Poethics (Routledge Research on Decoloniality and New Postcolonialisms)
by Michaeline A. Crichlow Patricia M. NorthoverThis book, contextualized by the violence of globalization, investigates the fungible, fugitive, and untenable experiences of Black being and time through a decolonial poethics of global*Blackness. In so doing it introduces innovative readings of coloniality/decoloniality by threading its meaning and movement through the “problem” of Blackness. It argues that global*Blackness is the complexly entangled other side of decoloniality, as movement, method, and poethics for radical new worlds. The essays explore this through inter/transdisciplinary, creative, and decolonial standpoints, whether from prison abolitionist demands to Afrofuturist imaginaries, or by seeing through Black mirrors. It emphasizes the paradoxical characteristics of global*Blackness—its spectral quality of being in and out of modernity's self-narrative—to provide a way of dwelling with global Blackness as a force that is neither “properly” constituted by corporeality nor thinkable in ontological terms determined by modern power. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and students in the fields of social sciences, cultural studies, postcolonial studies as well as cultural practitioners, art educators, artists, cultural activists, and those institutions that seek to decolonize imaginaries, thought, practices, and methods. Given its diverse offerings, it will also be of interest to upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and academics.

The Racial Dynamics of Reporting Africa: Colonial and Decolonial Practices in Mainstream Western News Media (Routledge Research in Journalism)
by Omega DouglasThis book critically considers how and why centring race in the analysis of journalism deepens our understanding of how race is constructed and experienced in society. In doing so, it offers a theoretical framework for unpacking and dismantling racism within journalism practice and representation.Linking race critical, post- and decolonial theories to the structural-constructivist framework of journalistic field theory, this book examines the role of Black journalists and INGOs in reporting on sub-Saharan Africa in dominant British news organisations. This study goes beyond journalistic representation to consider the racial dynamics informing the production of Western news and the complex relations between journalists of colour and the institutional culture of dominant Western news organisations. Through a case study and in-depth original interviews, the author addresses the racialisation of mainstream UK news production and news representations of Africa and shows how and why mediated racialised discourses occur and recur, as well as what to do about them.Advancing studies of race, representation, Black identities and journalism studies, The Racial Dynamics of Reporting Africa contributes to decolonising journalism, media and communication studies. It is recommended reading for students, academics and practitioners in these areas.
Healthy Embodiment: Philosophical Reflections on the Experience of Health (Routledge Research in Phenomenology)
by Bas de BoerThis book provides a philosophical analysis of the experience of health and investigates how this experience is shaped by recent developments in medicine and public health. It shows how phenomenological and Foucauldian approaches to health can be systematically integrated into a general account of healthy embodiment. Many medical practitioners argue for a shift from curative to preventative medicine. Technoscientific developments now enable us to track our health and provide more effective ways to live healthily. This book argues that these developments shape how we experience our health of and others, as well as the way in which we distinguish between health and illness. Its starting point is that health is not so much an object with well-defined boundaries that can be scrutinized scientifically but is better understood as an embodied experience. The author uses phenomenology and the work of Foucault to develop a theory of healthy embodiment. He argues that experiencing oneself as a healthy subject requires being made present as a healthy object by someone or something else. He explores how the experience of health results from the interaction between being a subject and being an object and potentially involves challenging medical norms.Healthy Embodiment will be of interest to researchers and graduate students working in phenomenology, science and technology studies, medical humanities, bioethics and sociology of medicine.
Women Writing Race in the Seventeenth-Century English Atlantic: Civil Agents (Routledge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture)
by Kristina LucenkoWomen Writing Race in the Seventeenth-Century English Atlantic: Civil Agents highlights early modern women writers’ invocations of civility to reach for the privileges of whiteness. The women studied in this book were writing in various textual modes and span boundaries of ideology, class, religion and race: Royalist writer Margaret Cavendish; notorious “German princess” Mary Carleton; early Quaker missionaries to Barbados Lydia Fell, Alice Curwen, and Elizabeth Hooton; and Patience Boston, a Native woman from Monomoy on Cape Cod. As this book explores, women writing in the early English Atlantic engaged civility as a concept and an idiom whose racialist implications were becoming codified. Some of the women analyzed embraced and leveraged the practice of civility as a form of agency, while others resisted and were marginalized by it.

Comedy and Satire in Zimbabwe: The Poetics and Politics of Resistance After Mugabe (Palgrave Studies in Comedy)
by Rodwell MakombeThe book is about comedy, the nation, and resistance in Zimbabwe, following the fall of Robert Mugabe in 2017. It explores how satiric comedies and comic texts in post-Mugabe Zimbabwe contest hegemonic narratives of the nation and authorise alternative narratives from the margins. Drawing on postcolonial theories of the nation, it analyses subversive comedies and social media texts that contest official political narratives in Zimbabwe, including the comedies of four Zimbabwean comedians—Kapfupi and Marabha, Doc Vikela, and Sabhuku Vharazipi—as well as social media texts on President Mnangagwa&’s Facebook Page and cartoons published by the Zimbabwean newspaper ZimDaily. Primarily found via social media platforms (Facebook and Youtube), these texts centre alternative views and narratives of ordinary citizens, contesting established truths and providing a counter-narration to official hegemonic discourses of the nation. Where existing scholarship on post-Mugabe politics in Zimbabwe focuses on issues such as the coup, militarisation, and discourses of "newness", little attention has been paid to the forms of resistance used in everyday discourse by Zimbabweans, and particularly via satire and comedy. These comic texts, shared by comedians and normal citizens on social media, can provide a useful alternative perspective to make sense of the politics and political performances that characterize the new political dispensation after Mugabe.

Sustainable Urban Transitions and New Public Management: The Norwegian Experience
by Kristin Reichborn-KjennerudNordic welfare states are often looked to by those who favor more collective and collaborative models of governance. However, as in other European countries, in recent decades the New Public Management (NPM) model has hollowed out much of the Nordic welfare state. This book studies Norway, a late adopter of NPM, and demonstrates the consequences of these changes on Norwegian society and its compatibility with the transition to a more sustainable society. The first half of the book demonstrates the ensuing consequences of NPM on Norwegian society, and questions whether NPM is compatible with the transition to a more sustainable society. The second half of the book describes a more transformative direction, furthering sustainable cities that will support the health and wellbeing of their inhabitants better, and ushering more collaborative efforts to improve sustainability. Working from visions of a new future rather than from existing systems, based on an alternative and more holistic governance model, could take our communities in a more sustainable direction. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of sustainability, public management and urban development.
