One-Year Dynasty: Inside the Rise and Fall of the 1986 Mets, Baseball's Impossible One-and-Done Champions
by Matthew SilvermanRelive the games, moves, and players of the hard-hitting team that won the 1986 World Series. Vin Scully called the tenth-inning groundball in Game Six of the 1986 World Series—Mets versus Red Sox—that sealed a comeback, fueled a curse, and turned a batting champion into a scapegoat. But getting there was a long, hard slog with plenty of heartache. After being knocked out of contention the previous two seasons, the Mets blasted through the National League that year. They won blowouts, nailbiters, fights, and a 14-inning game that ended with one pitcher on the mound, another in right field, and an All-Star catcher playing third base. Matt Silverman covers famous baseball players including: Ron Darling, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Darryl Strawberry and more. Going beyond the partying and excess, Silverman recounts in this book, step by step, the team&’s meteoric rise in 1986, when they captured their first division title in over a decade, shattered the franchise record, and then won it all.

Democracy and Me: Design and Evaluation of a Citizenship Education Program
by Oke Heinrich HorstmannIn this book, Oke Heinrich Horstmann explores how young people learn about democracy and their own role within it through out-of-school educational settings. The study is motivated by the political engagement of many youths, particularly in the context of the Fridays for Future protest movement. The author first outlines a conceptual framework for Citizenship education programs within teaching-learning laboratories. Based on an integrated approach of democratic education that combines social and subject-specific learning, he develops an out-of-school educational program implemented at the demokratie:werk of the Kiel Science Outreach Lab (Kieler Forschungswerkstatt). A quantitative questionnaire-based study investigates changes in participants&’ individual political dispositions. In addition, guided individual interviews are conducted and analyzed using qualitative research methods to capture processes of meaning-making related to democracy. The results suggest that participation in the program may lead to increases in political self-efficacy, specific action readiness, and, in some cases, political interest. The investigation of learners&’ conceptions suggests potential for fostering meaning-making but also reveals a need for deeper reflection on the perceived role of the individual in democratic contexts.
Nationalism or Cost-Benefit Analysis in Perception: The Logic of China’s Foreign Policy Choices in Bilateral Disputes in Post-Cold War Period (IPP Studies in the Frontiers of China’s Public Policy)
by Weijun XuThis book explores the changes in the degree of toughness of China&’s foreign policy choices in bilateral international disputes over the period from 1992 to 2022. Chinese popular nationalism, due to its considerable social mobilization capacity, may have the potential to influence the Chinese government's foreign policy choices through a bottom-up approach, especially in the context of the Chinese government's increasing reliance on nationalism for its regime legitimacy. The author establishes an analytical framework for China&’s foreign policy choices in bilateral disputes, emphasising the influence of three factors: China&’s perception of the importance of the bilateral relations, its perception of the priority of the interests involved in the dispute, and its perception of the severity of the dispute. Through a series of case studies, the author demonstrates that the influence of Chinese popular nationalism on government policy is limited. This book offers fascinating insights for policymakers, journalists and scholars.

Monoamine Transporters (Advances in Neurobiology #46)
by Ole MortensenThe family of monoamine transporters (MATs), composed of the dopamine transporter, serotonin transporter, and norepinephrine transporter, mediates the reuptake of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine from the synapses and extra-synaptic regions, and is thus critical for regulating neurotransmission by controlling the extracellular levels of these neurotransmitters. The monoamine transporters are targets of some of the most successful psychoactive compounds, including amphetamines, cocaine, and antidepressants, among others. Monoamine Transporters will cover significant new information gained over the last decades on these important brain membrane proteins and provide a detailed overview of recent advances in our understanding of the role monoamine transporters play in both normal and disease physiology. This will include in-depth reviews of our current knowledge of their structure, function, and regulation. Translational aspects on diseases where therapeutics targeting the MATs have been successful and helped elucidate the etiology of the respective diseases will also be covered.
The Black Condition and The Hypocritical Society: Ongoing Racism as Residual Slavery, Colonialism and Apartheid
by Frank Aragbonfoh AbumereThis book examines the enduring legacies of slavery, colonialism, and apartheid, arguing that these are not merely historical events but ongoing injustices shaping systemic racism today. Through a six-fold framework, the book explores the links between the past and present (the residuality objective), the possibility of future injustices (the probability objective), and the necessity of rectificatory justice. The book also proposes pathways for addressing these legacies (the way-forward objective) while encouraging Black and African communities to focus on empowerment and resilience beyond demands for rectification (the beyond rectification and realistic resolution objectives). With a critical eye on the ongoing impacts of slavery, colonialism, and apartheid, the author challenges the notion that these injustices are mere historical relics. Instead, this book demonstrates how their residues are embedded in the systemic racism that persists today. It calls for a reckoning with the past to dismantle the structures of racism in the present.
Doing, Failing, and Realizing Policy Change: A research programme on drivers, barriers, and politics of change in a transforming society (Studien der NRW School of Governance)
by Maximilian SchiffersBuilding on advancements in research on public policy, interest groups, and governance, this book addresses the translation of drivers and hurdles of change into concrete policy change and transformation. It follows the question how we can understand and explain the complex links between different explanatory factors – institutional, actor centred, and politics-of-change – that convey the possibilities for change into actual change. The results highlight that policy change is not an automatic process where the loudest voices prevail or where political attention forces change. Rather, the understanding of policy change requires a combination of emphasizing politics-of-change as a focus on the concrete political processes and agency, a multi-perspective analytical view on the mechanisms of change, and empirical in-depth analysis of the activities of policy actors across episodes of political stability. Acknowledging the practical relevance, it actively fosters the transfer of knowledge between academia and society on practical issues of doing, failing, and realizing policy change in a transforming society.

Adventures of an Accidental Sociologist: How to Explain the World Without Becoming a Bore
by Peter L. BergerPeter L. Berger is arguably the best-known American sociologist living today. Since the 1960s he has been publishing books on many facets of the American social scene, and several are now considered classics. So it may be hard to believe Professor Berger's description of himself as an "accidental sociologist." But that in fact accurately describes how he stumbled into sociology. In this witty, intellectually stimulating memoir, Berger explains not only how he became a social scientist, but the many adventures that this calling has led to. Rather than writing an autobiography, he focuses on the main intellectual issues that motivated his work and the various people and situations he encountered in the course of his career. Full of memorable vignettes and colorful characters depicted in a lively narrative often laced with humor, Berger's memoir conveys the excitement that a study of social life can bring. The first part of the book describes Berger's initiation into sociology through the New School for Social Research, "a European enclave in the midst of Greenwich Village bohemia." Berger was first a student at the New School and later a young professor amidst a clique of like-minded individuals. There he published The Social Construction of Reality (with colleague Thomas Luckmann), one of his most successful books, followed by The Sacred Canopy on the sociology of religion, also still widely cited. The book covers Berger's experience as a "globe-trekking sociologist" including trips to Mexico, where he studied approaches to Third World poverty; to East Asia, where he discovered the potential of capitalism to improve social conditions; and to South Africa, where he chaired an international study group on the future of post-Apartheid society. Berger then tells about his role as the director of a research center at Boston University. For over two decades he and his colleagues have been tackling such important issues as globalization, the secularization of Europe, and the ongoing dialectic between relativism and fundamentalism in contemporary culture. What comes across throughout is Berger's boundless curiosity with the many ways in which people interact in society. This book offers longtime Berger readers as well as newcomers to sociology proof that the sociologist's attempt to explain the world is anything but boring.
On the Santa Fe Trail
by James A. CrutchfieldThe Santa Fe Trail&’s role as the major western trade route in the early to mid-nineteenth century made it a critical part of America&’s Westward expansion and the stories of its heyday include some of the greatest adventures in the history of the Old West. On the Santa Fe Trail paints a portrait of the land before the wagon tracks were carved in its surface and recounts the hardships, dangers, and adventures faced by the hardy souls who went West to make their fortunes.
Project Eagle: The Top-Secret OSS Operation That Sent Polish Spies behind Enemy Lines in World War II
by John S. MicgielAfter the Battle of the Bulge—which had begun with a German attack that American intelligence failed to anticipate—the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), forerunner of the CIA, revamped its intelligence operations in Europe. Confronted with staff shortages and needing native language speakers, the OSS decided to enlist the cooperation of volunteers from occupied countries for intelligence-gathering operations. As part of Project Eagle, Polish soldiers were recruited and trained to go behind the lines of the Third Reich. Project Eagle tells this fascinating World War II story of intelligence and espionage that until now has been hidden away in the archives of the OSS.The OSS had worked with Polish exiles throughout the war, but Project Eagle would mark a new and dramatic chapter in their cooperation. In early 1945, American intelligence recruited thirty-two Poles—a unique group of men who had been forcibly conscripted into the German Wehrmacht, were captured in France and Italy, and were pulled from Allied prisoner of war camps. They were then trained in intelligence gathering as well as espionage to assist the Allies in their invasion of Germany. Not long after—in March 1945—they parachuted behind enemy lines, equipped only with falsified documents and radios. For six weeks, up until Germany&’s surrender, the Polish spy teams roved Germany, assisting ground commanders and providing counterintelligence assistance.
