Innovation at the Peripheries: Firm Strategy for Enabling Regional Advantages (Palgrave Studies in Democracy, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship for Growth)

by Alba Marino

Innovation scholarship has traditionally leaned towards the analysis of innovation processes linked to conditions found in ‘core’ areas; well-functioning economic hubs and dynamic high-technology sectors. Although more recent work on innovation in emerging economies has begun to broaden the picture, innovation in the ‘peripheral’ regions and sectors of developed economies is still largely unexplored. This book is a unique exploration of how innovation processes operate in peripheral regions, while also looking at the key drivers and challenges organizations face in peripheral areas as they strive to innovate and compete globally. Adopting interdisciplinary approaches from management studies, economics and geography, this book blends theory-building and quantitative approaches to investigate the periphery and innovation nexus, with a focus on bibliometric approach, topic modelling, and patent-based analysis. It will be of great interest to scholars and students of innovation, strategic management, regional development and sustainability.

Neurotology Updates (Comprehensive ENT)

by Nuray Bayar Muluk Mahmut Tayyar Kalcioglu Herman Arthur Jenkins

This book provides comprehensive and up-to-date general information and evaluation of the diagnostic and therapeutic options available to individuals suffering from neurotologic diseases. Neurotology is a fast-developing area of science. Even fundamental terminology, such as the meaning of vestibular symptoms, has only recently been established due to the rapid development of vestibular research. This volume discusses the fundamental sciences, and the clinical application of treatments in neurotology, as well as the most recent research. It is aimed at assisting physicians in making the most effective judgments regarding the management of care for their patients. Diagnosing patients with vestibular symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, unsteadiness, and oscillopsia requires consideration of symptoms and indicators of neurotologic illnesses. The majority of diagnoses may be made right at the patient's side. A grasp of important diagnostic concepts is vital for all practicing neurologists, who regularly assess whether such patients merit immediate diagnostic testing or hospital admission. This book emphasizes understanding how to take a focused medical history and perform a thorough physical examination on a patient experiencing vestibular symptoms or suspected of having a neurotologic condition. This up-to-date reference should be part of the collections of all otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, audiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and residents interested in providing the best possible care for patients.

Uncovering Islamophobia in Higher Education: Supporting the Success of Muslim Students and Staff (Palgrave Studies in Race, Inequality and Social Justice in Education)

by Arif Mahmud Maisha Islam

This edited collection documents the experiences of Muslim students and staff in UK higher education (HE), including their expertise and experiences in teaching, scholarship, policy and academic transitions as professionals, academics and students. At a time when UK HE at large is attempting to redress myriad racial and social injustices, this collection highlights how this meaningfully applies to Muslim students and staff who find themselves at the nexus of multiple, intersectional oppressions. The chapters presented, all written by Muslim authors, describe the inequalities faced by students and staff at all levels of their educational and professional journeys, exposing the fluid manifestations of Islamophobia within HE structures and institutions. Critically, the book advocates for hope by offering tools that universities and sector bodies can utilise to tackle challenging and nuanced cycles of inequity. This timely volume is essential reading for students, academics, professional service staff, and policymakers leading on diversity, equity and inclusion research, activity and interventions, or those within the sector who wish for it to become more equitable.

Tobacco in Global Perspective, 1780–1960: Trade, Knowledge, and Labour (Cambridge Imperial and Post-Colonial Studies)

by Jean Stubbs Alexander Van Wickeren William Gervase Clarence-Smith

This edited collection provides an in-depth analysis of the imperial, colonial, and postcolonial history of tobacco from 1780 to 1960, which was one of the major periods of change in the global tobacco economy. It brings together case-studies from known and lesser-known tobacco regions of the world to interrogate tobacco’s ‘second globalisation’, a concept little employed by historians thus far, but one which encapsulates tobacco’s central role in Europe’s imperial expansion beyond the Atlantic and the social, political, and cultural transformations of global capitalism taking place during the period. The collection fills a gap in the study of commodities of empire, which has examined tobacco primarily for the early modern Atlantic world, or for single empires during the later period. It invites comparison across borders, encompassing political, economic, and sociocultural history, and, with a particular emphasis on trade, knowledge, and labour, juxtaposes micro-histories with a macro-historical perspective. Together, the studies in the volume testify to the importance of tobacco in new places and among new players, challenging the confines of national and imperial historiographical frameworks. They demonstrate the rising dominance of new powerful forces, including transnational corporations, but also a wide range of actors in conflict and negotiation within territorial and imperial confines. By systematically taking into account the agency in Europe’s apparent peripheries and the Global South, they critique a simple assumption of the dominance of the West. Flow Cytometry: Principles, Applications, and Clinical Perspectives

by Awtar Krishan Ranbir Chander Sobti Devendra K. Agrawal

Flow cytometry is a state-of-the-art technology that is widely used in biological research and clinical diagnostics. It is a high-throughput platform that allows the quantification, differentiation, and functional study of cells or cell like particles in suspension. Various cell components can be targeted with fluorescently labelled antibodies or fluorescent dyes to allow measurement and analysis of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of individual cells within homogenous or heterogeneous populations. Since its commercialization more than five decades ago, flow cytometry has advanced and become an very important analytical tool in translational research. With the advancement of instrument technology, an increasing number of fluorescent dyes, and an expanding range of monoclonal antibodies, the applications of flow cytometry in applied research continue to grow. The use of multiparametric flow cytometry in translational research provides the ability to rapidly identify different cell populations and to simultaneously measure multiple parameters of single cells for efficiently assessing immune status, decrease/increase of specific immune cell populations, cell activation status, etc. of different cells in preclinical and clinical studies. The primary goal of any research work is to take research results from the "bench to-bed and back". The use of flow cytometry in applied research advances the development of new diagnostic tests or drugs for cancer treatment, immune monitoring, etc. that help in patient care. Today, every biological scientist needs to have basic knowledge of flow cytometry in order to utilise this technology properly in their own research and to understand other’s research work. The present book has been designed to give the knowledge of flow cytometry and its applications to the researchers and teachers. It will allow the readers to utilize the technology in an appropriate way in their research work. This book has describing various applications of flow cytometry like cell health monitoring, immunophenotyping, cell sorting, stem cell characterization, micro-vesicle analysis etc.

Boards Under Crisis: Decision-Making in the Age of Uncertainty and Fear (IE Business Publishing)

by Carmelo Mazza A. Lavin Fernandez

Crises, in the past, have been cyclical events in economic history. However, we are currently experiencing an acceleration of these cycles with shorter time span in-between major events. In a period of 20 years, from 2001 to 2021, we have lived three global major crisis events: The Twin Tower Attack on September 11th, 2001, the Financial Crash in 2008, and the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020. In the first edition of this book, the authors explained the main decision-making patterns of behavior (i.e. short termism, centralization, and parochialism) that characterized the management processes of Boards of Directors during the financial crash. Now, in this revised and updated second edition, the authors explore the main commonalities and differences between decision making at the top during the previous financial crisis and during the most recent Covid 19 global pandemic, as well as during the inception of the war in Ukraine. In doing so they ask, is this a new crisis or just the “new normal” that businesses and organizations need to face after major catastrophic events? By first reassessing the very meaning of the word ‘crisis,’ the authors explore the relationship between frequent crises, emergency cabinets and socially widespread fear as determinants of a “new normal” rather than as the extraordinary state of our societies. In this sense, the authors identify more nuanced and updated consequences of short termism, centralization and parochialism that could shape the changes after the current crisis and the approach to next crisis to come

Physical Education and Wellbeing: Global and Holistic Approaches to Child Health and Academic Learning

by Timothy Lynch

This book, now in its second edition, explores how physical education (PE) and learning through movement can be best enacted in schools in order to optimise children's wellbeing and subsequent academic learning. Drawing together extensive data from school communities around the globe, the author examines multiple dimensions of child health in practice. Ultimately, the findings suggest that PE is imperative within the wider landscape of children’s holistic learning, offering a powerful platform for meaningful connections across learning areas. While quantitative research has long evidenced the benefits of physical activity, this book contributes to the complex and global issue of what effective health and wellbeing approaches look like in practice, offering clear strategies for optimising children’s academic learning. It is natural for children to enjoy movement for the purposes of play, exploration, learning and development; this book is essential reading for scholars (professors, researchers and students), school leaders and educators looking to enhance children’s wellbeing, general health and academic learning.
