JG26: Top Guns of the Luftwaffe
by Donald Caldwell&“This unique, impressive study presents a history in microcosm of the entire Luftwaffe Fighter Corps . . . [a] spellbinding work.&” —Library Journal Jagdgeschwader 26, the German elite fighter unit, was more feared by the Allies than any other Luftwaffe group. Based on extensive archival research in Europe, personal combat diaries and interviews with more than 50 surviving pilots, Caldwell has assembled a superb day-to-day chronicle of JG 26 operations, from its first air victory in 1939 to its final combat patrol in 1945. A microcosm of World War II exists in the rise and fall of this famous fighter wing. For the first two years of the war it was an even match between the Spitfires and Hurricanes of the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe&’s Messerschmitts and Focke Wulfs; but the scales tipped in favor of the Allies in 1943 with the arrival of the Eighth US Air Force and its peerless P-51 Mustang. The book has been endorsed by the top fighter commanders of three air forces: the RAF (Johnnie Johnson), the USAAF (Hub Zemke), and the Luftwaffe (Adolf Galland) and is considered essential reading for anyone interested in the aerial war of 1941–45.
Doing Sixty & Seventy
by Gloria SteinemReflections on women&’s aging from the New York Times–bestselling author who inspired the film The Glorias. One day I woke up and there was a seventy-year-old woman in my bed . . . Gloria Steinem has been an eloquent and outspoken voice for women&’s rights and equality for more than four decades. In Doing Sixty & Seventy she addresses an essential concern of people everywhere—and especially of women: the issue of aging. Whereas turning fifty, in her experience, is &“leaving a much-loved and familiar country,&” turning sixty means &“arriving at the border of a new one.&” With insight, intelligence, wit, and heartfelt honesty, she explores the landscapes of this new country and celebrates what she has called &“the greatest adventure of our lives.&” While appreciating everybody&’s experiences as different, Steinem sees these years as charged with possibilities. Dealing with stereotypes and the &“invisibility&” that often accompany a woman&’s senior years can be as liberating as it is frustrating. It frees women as well as men to embrace that &“full, glorious, alive-in-the-moment, don&’t-give-a-damn yet caring-for-everything sense of the right now.&” This ebook features an illustrated biography of Gloria Steinem including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author&’s personal collection.
Borneo Boys: Indonesia Confrontation, 1962–66
by Roger AnnettThe author, Roger Annett, experienced first-hand the events detailed here. Flying with 215 Squadron, and co-piloting Argosy transport aircraft deep over Malayan jungle terrain from 1963 to 65, he is well placed to provide a colorful account of this dramatic period. Following a reunion of RAF Whirlwind veterans of Borneo, Annett began work on this record of their collective experience, attempting to stir the memories of both war veterans and civilians alike, riveted by the drama as it played out by opposing forces attempting to control the island of Borneo. The book describes the oppositions, antagonisms, victories, and defeats experienced on the island. Borneo itself, with its difficult terrain, jungles, and lack of adequate road networks, proved to be one of the biggest challenges from a military perspective, and it is brought to life here. The story of the 'Borneo Boys' of the title traces a journey from new recruits at boot camp to flying training, and on to Borneo itself. It was here where a fraternal bond was to be forged to last a lifetime and provide an impetus for this book. The process of Theatre familiarization jungle training, nursing Whirlwind 10s over and around the mountainous Malayan jungle is recorded here with first-hand authenticity.Setting this journey in context, Annett fills out the history of the wider conflict in which the boys were embroiled. The Far East colonial tensions, which bred antagonism and ultimately led to the conflict, are detailed, as are the cross-border raids and riots, which bred a fever of revolt.Much is written already on the Borneo conflict, a lot of it dealing with the politics of the situation. This book swoops its focus on the young men who were called upon to fly over such confusion, far away from home. It is their daily adventures, camaraderie, and learning trajectory, which we are faced with. All the excitement of the Aviator's adrenalin ride is translated into eloquent prose, strengthened by the kind of confident delivery that only a man involved in such proceedings could achieve.
Funeral Games: A Novel Of Alexander The Great: A Virago Modern Classic (The Novels of Alexander the Great #3)
by Mary RenaultThe conclusion to the New York Times–bestselling trilogy of ancient Greece by the author Hilary Mantel calls &“a shining light.&” By the end of his reign, Alexander the Great had seized control of an empire that extended from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River. When he died in 323 BC, a fervent scramble for power ensued. Funeral Games is Mary Renault&’s remarkable novel of this turmoil and the gradual erosion of the Greek empire. The power players include Ptolemy, two father-son teams, and a cadre of influential women—not least of whom is Eurydike, whose plan is to marry Alexander&’s disabled brother, Arridaios. Brimming with outsize personalities, brazen plots, and a sweeping sense of history, Funeral Games brings to vivid life the world of Alexander the Great, and the seismic tumult in the wake of his death.Funeral Games is the final volume of the Novels of Alexander the Great trilogy, which begins with The Persian Boy and Fire from Heaven. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Mary Renault including rare images of the author. &“Mary Renault is a shining light to both historical novelists and their readers. She does not pretend the past is like the present, or that the people of ancient Greece were just like us. She shows us their strangeness; discerning, sure-footed, challenging our values, piquing our curiosity, she leads us through an alien landscape that moves and delights us.&” —Hilary Mantel
Harvest Home: A Novel
by Thomas TryonA family flees the crime-ridden city—and finds something worse—in &“a brilliantly imagined horror story&” by the New York Times–bestselling author (The Boston Globe). After watching his asthmatic daughter suffer in the foul city air, Theodore Constantine decides to get back to the land. When he and his wife search New England for the perfect nineteenth-century home, they find no township more charming, no countryside more idyllic than the farming village of Cornwall Coombe. Here they begin a new life: simple, pure, close to nature—and ultimately more terrifying than Manhattan&’s darkest alley. When the Constantines win the friendship of the town matriarch, the mysterious Widow Fortune, they are invited to join the ancient festival of Harvest Home, a ceremony whose quaintness disguises dark intentions. In this bucolic hamlet, where bootleggers work by moonlight and all of the villagers seem to share the same last name, the past is more present than outsiders can fathom—and something far more sinister than the annual harvest is about to rise out of the earth. Credited as the inspiration for Stephen King&’s Children of the Corn, Thomas Tryon&’s chilling novel was ahead of its time when first published, and continues to provoke abject terror in readers.
Fifth Army in Italy, 1943–1945: A Coalition at War
by Ian BlackwellA history of the Allied coalition in Italy during World War II.The US Fifth Army first saw action during the Salerno Landings in September 1943. While commanded by US Lieutenant General Mark Clark, from the outset one of its two Corps was the X (British) Corps; the other V1 (US) Corps. The multi-national composition of Fifth Army is demonstrated by the French Expeditionary Corps, the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, the South African Armoured Division, the Italian Co-Belligerent forces, formations from the New Zealand Corps and the 4th Indian Division.Clark’s Fifth Army was itself part of the Fifteenth Army Group, commanded by Field Marshal Alexander. Alexander’s light and diplomatic touch oiled the wheels of this uneasy arrangement but inevitably there were tensions and disagreements that threatened success. The low priority accorded to Italy as compared with OVERLORD and NW Europe did not help matters. Seen as a backwater, crack units were taken away and insufficient resources allocated to the Italian Campaign. This combined with the tenacity of the Germans, the difficult terrain and the harsh climate caused real problems. Allied morale was at times particularly brittle and desertion rates worryingly high. This superbly researched book objectively examines the performance of Fifth Army against this complex and troublesome backdrop. The author’s findings make for authoritative and fascinating reading and give food for thought about multinational cooperation in more recent conflicts.
The Battle East of Elsenborn and the Twin Villages
by William C. CavanaghA US Army historian chronicles a vital zone of conflict within The Battle of the Bulge in this authoritative and detailed account of WWII combat. With Allied forces encroaching on all fronts, Hitler made one final, desperate offensive in the Ardennes. While The Battle of the Bulge is extensively written about in histories of the Second World War, this book focuses on a critical but seldom explored aspect of the conflict: the five-day critical battle for the North shoulder of the Bulge at Rochearth-Krinkelt. The Bulge was fought was fought in many areas, but for the soldiers of the First Army—six of whom were awarded Congressional Medals of Honor for their brave acts during the engagement—it was won on this shoulder. Military historian William Cavanagh has studied official after-action reports, histories and unit reports of organizations involved in the battle. In addition, he has conducted an extensive program of individual contacts, not only with the US Army participants, local villages and resistance fighters, but also with German commanders at various levels in the three divisions involved. Having lived in the Ardennes for many years and served as a principle researcher for the Deputy Chief Historian for the United States Army, Cavanagh brings a rare insight and expertise to his subject.

Inflammation Nation: The First Clinically Proven Eating Plan to End Our Nation's Secret Epidemic
by Floyd H. ChiltonAn internationally renowned scientist sounds the alarm about our country's most critical health issue and provides a simple eating plan that can help stop this secret epidemic one individual at a time. Here are the chilling statistics: ·One in three American adults suffers from arthritis. ·Sixty-four million people have heart disease in some form. ·Fifty million Americans suffer with allergies and 20 million have asthma. ·More than 18 million people have diabetes, with 1.3 million newly diagnosed each year. ·Sixty-five percent of American adults are over-weight or obese and 16 percent of children are overweight. At best, these conditions destroy our quality of life; at worst, they are painful, debilitating, and fatal. What can possibly account for the sharp increase in these diseases over the last few generations? Is there a connection between these afflictions? Is there anything you can do to protect yourself? As this groundbreaking book makes clear, the root cause of diseases as disparate as heart disease, eczema, and asthma is unbridled inflammation. And the major culprit is right in front of us -- on our plates. Every day we make food choices -- some of which are perceived as "healthy" -- that introduce poisonous levels of certain fatty acids to our bodies. These fatty acids (found in myriad foods, from farm-raised salmon and eggs to roasted turkey) help to inflame our immune systems. Backed by twenty years of research, and by an unprecedented six clinical trials, Dr. Chilton presents two anti-inflammatory dietary programs: One is designed to provide a solution for those of us who currently suffer from an inflammatory disease, and the other is designed to prevent the rest of us from getting one. Complete with a new food pyramid and eight weeks of easy-to-follow meal plans developed in collaboration with a world-class medical school, the book also includes charts detailing which types of fish are the best inflammation fighters, which carbs you should enjoy or avoid, and the patented Inflammation Index, which gives you the inflammatory potential of more than 250 foods. If you're already suffering from one of these diseases and follow the Chilton Program, you will see improvement in your health in as few as seven days. If you think you've dodged this bullet altogether, this book will make it very clear that no one is safe, and it will convince you to completely change the way you eat from this moment forward.
Specials (Uglies #3)
by Scott Westerfeld"Special Circumstances" - These words have sent chills down Tally's spine since her days as a rebellious Ugly. Back then Specials were a sinister rumour - frighteningly beautiful, dangerously strong, breathtakingly fast. Ordinary pretties might live their whole lives without meeting a Special. But Tally's never been ordinary… Now she's been turned into one of them: a superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the Uglies down and the Pretties stupid. The strength, the speed, and the clarity and focus of her thinking feel better than anything Tally can remember… most of the time. One tiny corner of her heart still remembers something more. Still, it's easy to tune that out - until Tally's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: carry out the mission she's programmed to complete, or listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat telling her that something's wrong… Either way, Tally's world will never be the same.

Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in & Around Durham (Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths)
by Maureen AndersonFoul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in and Around Durham spans four centuries, with over fifty terrible tales of man's inhumanity to man, which are related in the pages of this book. In the early centuries superstition and ignorance were often the means by which justice was meted out. If it was believed that a crime had taken place, a person could be tried, condemned and hanged by the side of the road on nothing more than the statement of a neighbor. The nineteenth century saw the development of the coal industry. This brought thousands of impoverished men looking for work. Sadly , the wages were often spent on alcohol and women were often nothing more than punching bags for the drunken abusive husbands as is the case of Dorothy Wilthew who was murdered at Jarrow by her husband after years of abuse. Other cases include; Joseph Hutchinson who murdered his brother and father at Sedgefield later he was found to be insane, a child was kidnapped and later murdered by Isabella Thompson at Bishop Auckland and Maria Fitzmmons was found stabbed to death in Sunderland in 1869 it was to be 13 years before her killer, Thomas Fury, was convicted of the crime . Take a journey into the darker and unknown side of your area as you read Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in and Around Durham.

In Safe as Houses, Simone van der Vlugt delivers &“a lean, stripped-down thriller that hits the ground running and sprints full-tilt to its breathless climax&” (The Irish Times).&“Van der Vlugt propels her double-pronged story along with a spare conciseness that has you flipping pages manically&” —Metro, UK
Lady Magdalen
by Robin JenkinsThis beautifully rendered novel of 17th century Scotland imagines the life of Lady Magdalene, 1st Marchioness of Montrose, during the English Civil War. Magadalen, the fourteen-year-old daughter of Lord Carnegie of Kinnaird, shares with her childhood friend, Francis Gowrie of Mintlaw, a love of art and beauty, and a horror of barbaric practices such as the burning of women thought to be witches. But, with civil war brewing and family alliances paramount, Carnegie arranges her marriage to an ambitious young soldier, James Graham, Earl of Montrose. So begins this captivating portrait of the little-known wife of the infamous Scottish nobleman. In Lady Magdalen, Robin Jenkins casts his ironic and informed eye over war-torn 17th-century Scotland, juxtaposing the feminine and domestic with the political and military ramifications of the era. It is a lush and acutely perceptive tale by an author whose &“deeply ambivalent analysis of human idealism has established him as the greatest living fiction writer in Scotland&” (The Scotsman, UK).

Eric Bottomley's Transport Gallery: A Journey Across the Canvas
by Eric BottomleyThis is Eric Bottomley's second art book, in which he has varied both his transport themes and the mediums in which he works. The majority of paintings are in oils but also included are gouache (watercolor) and pencil sketches. However, some paintings are both gouache and pencil, together known as mixed media.Railways have always been a great passion of Eric's, from trainspotting around the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire system as a boy, to painting commisions for customers both private and commercial. From his lowly studio in Wimborne, Dorset, where his painting career took off, Eric never envisaged that one day he would witness his paintings being presented to the Duke of Kent, or that he would meet the Duke of Gloucester (a fellow railway enthusiast). In 1979 he joined the Guild of Railway Artists, and later became a full member.Included in this book are all four regions of Britain's railway, but mostly the BR period from 1948, to the end of steam in 1968. Added to this are such scenes as the Trans-Siberian Express in Moscow, The Golfers Express leaving Belfast and preserved diesels in the USA.The sad demise of steam and dereliction of the canals in the 1960s, and the amazing restoration projects over the years, has provided Eric with an enormous scope of subject matter, much of which is captured in this compelling book.
