Sustainable Aging: Cases and Cooperation in China and Germany

by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

This open access book discusses three areas in which Germany has long-standing experience and solutions that are valuable for other countries—care education, care insurance and standards for age-friendly city neighborhoods. It introduces the development background, application and shortcomings in the German and Chinese context, providing examples for from around the globe and showcasing the role of international cooperation projects in promoting knowledge exchange and advising on implementation in the country-specific context. Fast-paced demographic changes present a pressing challenge around the world. In Europe, the demographic problem, along with discussions on solutions, has been prevalent for many decades. And recently, it has also reached formerly developing countries in Asia, such as China. International cooperation, including international development cooperation, promotes the exchange of ways to tackle the social and economic challenges in order to find globally applicable solutions, thereby contributing to sustainable development. By presenting lessons learned in other countries, this book provides guidance for policy makers, city representatives and academicians seeking solutions for the challenges of an aging society in their own countries. Although the application of interventions is context-specific, the discussion and exchange on available solutions are essential to achieving socially sustainable and inclusive societies.

Triumphant Warrior: The Legend of the Navy's Most Daring Helicopter Pilot

by Peter D. Shay

The true story of Bronze Star recipient Allen Weseleskey and his high-risk rescue mission, carried out under heavy fire in Vietnam. Includes photos. When the going is fast and rough, I will not falter. I will be uncompromising in every blow I strike. I will be humble in victory. I am a United States Navy Flyer. —from &“A Navy Flyer&’s Creed&” Barely a month after the start of the Tet Offensive in 1968, a Navy flyer applied this creed—and dared to risk not only his career but also his and his fellow aircrewmen&’s lives in rescuing a wounded US Army advisor only moments from certain battlefield death. The pilot, Lt. Cdr. Allen E. &“Wes&” Weseleskey, had been assigned to the Navy&’s Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three, the &“Seawolves,&” at the Vinh Long Army Airfield. His controversial mission took place in March 1968 in the Mekong Delta region. Two ARVN companies were being overwhelmed and despite coming under heavy fire, Weseleskey decided to go in and rescue as many survivors as possible. The accompanying Seawolf was forced to turn back after taking hits, but Weseleskey, with the agreement of his crew, persisted—flying so low under the treeline that they were out of reach of the VC rocket launchers. Weseleskey was awarded the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Navy Cross during his service. This is his story, from early assignments, clashes with superior officers, missions and rescues during the Tet Offensive, to homecoming. It is the story of a quintessential flyer, an American hero who was prepared to speak his mind and take risks—and of the vital role of the Seawolves in the Vietnam War.

Change We Must: Deciding the Future of Higher Education

by Edited by Matthew Goldstein and George Otte

A former chancellor and a lineup of stellar educators offer plans and ideas for making education work better for everyone. College is too expensive for too many. Politicians call for more financial support, but approve less. Underpaid, overworked adjuncts teach vastly more than the star faculty members who drew students to campus. Departments and administrations focus more on protecting their territories than on pedagogy or even management. Technology is extolled and resisted, hyped as the force that will utterly transform or deform education. It seems clear that the American system of higher education is broken. In a series of essays collected and edited by Matthew Goldstein, credited with reviving the vast City University of New York, and George Otte, Director of Academic Technology at CUNY, well-respected and innovative educators offer solutions to the fiscal, administrative, pedagogical, technical, and political problems. Among the solutions: * Break the centuries-old models of brick and mortar education and replace it with online, peer-led, and adaptive learning * Re-envision governance so even reluctant faculty and administrators can once again become invested in education rather than self-interest * Find innovative ways of promoting the changes American education so desperately needs, including figuring out when and where students are most likely to learn With essays from such thought leaders as Cathy N. Davidson, Candace Thille, Ray Schroeder, James Hilton, and Jonathan R. Cole, Change We Must is a must-read for anyone wanting American higher education to succeed and thrive in these challenging times.

Philosophische Präkonzepte verstehen: Eine Untersuchung der begrifflichen und methodischen Grundlagen (Ethik und Bildung)

by Nils Höppner

Disclosing Sexual Violence in a Digital Society: Storytelling, Activism, and Justice (Crime and Justice in Digital Society #3)

by Tully O’Neill

This book examines the various ways that victim-survivors disclose sexual violence in digital settings and theorizes the extent to which these practices constitute a new and informal 'justice' occurring in digital space. It features qualitative research interviews conducted with victim-survivors who disclosed sexual violence online and analyzes digital spaces utilized by survivors for the purposes of support, healing, and connection. The volume provides insight into how and why victim-survivors use digital technologies to pursue ‘justice’ and the decision-making processes they undertake in order to navigate digital space after sexual violence. It expands on the theorization of informal justice in digital society and its potential implications. It focuses particularly on the experiences of justice for victim-survivors in the aftermath of sexual violence, highlighting the complexities of disclosing rape, sexual assault, and abuse in digital space.

The Crossroads of Competition Law and Energy Regulation

by Laura Rimšaitė

This book explores the delicate balance between fostering competitive energy markets and ensuring effective regulation. It addresses the difficulty of reconciling competitive market dynamics with regulatory objectives such as ensuring reliability, fairness, and sustainability. In the highly dynamic energy sector, the convergence of competition law and energy regulation is a critical factor that greatly influences the trajectory of energy markets. The intersection of these significant domains can be complex and transformative when the goals of fostering fair competition and guaranteeing dependable and eco-friendly energy provision coincide. Market power in the energy sector can lead to a concentration of power among a handful of firms, which can hinder competition and limit consumer options. The dual objective of tackling market dominance and promoting energy security constitutes a significant challenge. In turn, the book discusses the challenges posed by natural monopolies in energy networks, the need for regulatory frameworks to support investment in infrastructure and renewable energy, and the complexities of price fluctuations. The topic of market dominance is also considered, as dominant corporations are capable of controlling prices and suppressing competition, resulting in higher prices for consumers and stifling innovation. The book offers valuable perspectives on creating a regulatory framework that promotes fair competition and achieves long-term policy goals in the energy sector. To do so, it draws on case studies and analyses from various countries.

Distributed Impulsive Coordination of Multi-Agent Systems (Intelligent Control and Learning Systems #15)

by Zhengle Zhang Tiedong Ma Bing Cui

This book investigates the distributed impulsive coordination control of multi-agent systems (MASs), including consensus problem and formation problem. Compared with continuous control, impulsive control as a discontinuous control method only needs information interaction at impulsive instants, which can greatly reduce the transmission cost in the communication process. In practice, MASs are often affected by environmental and hardware conditions, resulting in the application of impulsive control is limited. For example, it is difficult to exert the impulsive control signal accurately at a fixed instant, and it is difficult to control all agents at the same impulsive instant. Moreover, the actual models of MASs often contain some constraints such as unknown parameters, stochastic perturbation, and time delays. In addition, stochastic switching topologies and cyberattacks will limit the communication between agents in MASs, which will greatly affect the coordination control performance. Based on the existing research results, this book considers the above constraints of MASs in practice and studies the key problems of distributed impulsive coordination control for MASs. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in control system theory, as well as engineers studying MASs.

Byzantine Dress: A Guide

by Jennifer Ball

This book offers approaches to the study of Byzantine dress of elites and non-elites, in sacred and secular modes, from the beginning of the Empire in the fourth century until the fifteenth century. Byzantine dress is considered from within and outside of the Empire and examines both artifactual remains as well as emphasizing studies that elucidate Byzantine dress when few or no artifacts exist.Byzantine Dress: A Guide tackles current conceptual frameworks in the first three chapters and considers identity and sartorial signaling among Byzantines as well as foreigners in images as well as actual items of dress. A second section addresses material considerations, reflecting on construction and its effect on value. The interpretation of archaeological material is analyzed, along with reconstruction and context. Dress as part of rituals—at court, church, and in various ceremonies—is the focus of the third section. The final two chapters bring Byzantine dress into conversation with dress studies more broadly. A discursive chapter argues for a fashion system within the Byzantine Empire, which has been largely seen as pre-dating the notion of fashion. The final chapter concerns the display, interpretation, and conservation of fragmentary material in a museum context. This book aims toward a general audience new to the subject of Byzantine dress. Specialists in Byzantine studies and dress studies more generally will find the attention to current scholarship and archaeological interpretation invaluable for research, and the book will also appeal to an audience new to the subject of Byzantine dress.
