Modeling Spatio-Temporal Data: Markov Random Fields, Objective Bayes, and Multiscale Models
by Ferreira, Marco A. R.Several important topics in spatial and spatio-temporal statistics developed in the last 15 years have not received enough attention in textbooks. Modeling Spatio-Temporal Data: Markov Random Fields, Objectives Bayes, and Multiscale Models aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of a variety of recently proposed approaches for the analysis of spatial and spatio-temporal datasets, including proper Gaussian Markov random fields, dynamic multiscale spatio-temporal models, and objective priors for spatial and spatio-temporal models. The goal is to make these approaches more accessible to practitioners, and to stimulate additional research in these important areas of spatial and spatio-temporal statistics.Key topics: Proper Gaussian Markov random fields and their uses as building blocks for spatio-temporal models and multiscale models. Hierarchical models with intrinsic conditional autoregressive priors for spatial random effects, including reference priors, results on fast computations, and objective Bayes model selection. Objective priors for state-space models and a new approximate reference prior for a spatio-temporal model with dynamic spatio-temporal random effects. Spatio-temporal models based on proper Gaussian Markov random fields for Poisson observations. Dynamic multiscale spatio-temporal thresholding for spatial clustering and data compression. Multiscale spatio-temporal assimilation of computer model output and monitoring station data. Dynamic multiscale heteroscedastic multivariate spatio-temporal models. The M-open multiple optima paradox and some of its practical implications for multiscale modeling. Ensembles of dynamic multiscale spatio-temporal models for smooth spatio-temporal processes. The audience for this book are practitioners, researchers, and graduate students in statistics, data science, machine learning, and related fields. Prerequisites for this book are master's-level courses on statistical inference, linear models, and Bayesian statistics. This book can be used as a textbook for a special topics course on spatial and spatio-temporal statistics, as well as supplementary material for graduate courses on spatial and spatio-temporal modeling.

Pacific Northwest Coastal Environments: Earthquakes and Sea Level Rise
by Ronald C. ChaneyPacific Northwest Coastal Environments: Earthquakes and Sea Level Rise investigates the potential impacts of changes in global sea level by examining historical sea and land levels, projected future levels, and by determining how those changes may affect future tides and storm surges to inform their potential to cause harmful impacts. This region has a unique interaction of land, sea, and tectonics. Climate and tectonic change can initiate issues ranging from an inundation of coastal areas due to a combination of sea level rise, vertical land movement, and potential tsunami. This combination of factors leads to the retreat of coastal shorelines due to erosion caused by both tidal action and wave runup. Specific topics explored in this book include the following: Coastal erosion rates along the Pacific Northwest coastline from Eureka, California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Sea cliff retreat mitigation techniques looking at both the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques. Interaction between subduction zone earthquakes and vertical land movement. Wave characterization in both deep and shallow water. In addition, the book looks at both wave refraction and reflection along the coastline. Tides along the Pacific Northwest coastline and their role in calculating the relative sea level and its effect on coastal erosion.
Sexual Violence, Dissociation, and Inequality: A Guide to Understanding Traumatic Memory
by Muriel SalmonaSexual Violence, Dissociation, and Inequality is a book about traumatic memory—or how lived trauma is repeated by victims as if happening again. The author, internationally renowned psychiatrist Muriel Salmona, lays out a convincing argument for the ways in which victims are neurologically compelled to relive trauma and how, with proper treatment, they can fully heal. Informed by decades of clinical practice, research, and activism, Salmona explains how victims’ behaviors are rooted in neurology as normal responses to abnormal situations. In contrast to a climate of victim-blaming denial, Salmona explains how grave the violation of victims’ human rights truly is and what to do about it in terms of care and prevention. She explains in clear language how to reconstruct victims’ narratives, which are often clouded by traumatic amnesia, and thereby reconnect parts of the brain that were severed during the traumatic event. This is a guide for professionals who work with survivors, for survivors themselves, and for anyone committed to understanding and reducing violence and inequality.

Dynamics of Sexual Consent: Sex, Rape and the Grey Area In-Between
by Lena GunnarssonHow does sexual consent work? How do we know that another person really wants to have sex with us? Why do people sometimes give in to sex that they are not in the mood for? And how come it is sometimes difficult to draw a sharp line between sex and assault? Dynamics of Sexual Consent addresses these questions based on deeply personal interviews with 20 Swedish women and men of various ages and sexual orientations. In doing so, it contributes to understandings of sexual consent and sexual grey areas through its combination of conceptual rigour, analytical detail and empirical richness. While starting in the legal definition of consent as voluntary participation, the book broadens the discussion to a wider sociological and philosophical sphere where gendered power dynamics and relational dependencies challenge simplistic understandings of voluntariness. Contesting tendencies to see miscommunication as the key problem related to consent, it shows that emotional aspects are often the main factor standing in the way of genuinely consensual interactions. While the analysis is informed by a gender perspective emphasizing the gendered power asymmetries of heterosexuality, it also foregrounds men’s vulnerability and the power dynamics of samesex interactions. A key argument of the book is that, given the contextual and ambiguous nature of sexual interactions, it is impossible to delineate unequivocal and concretely applicable guidelines for what counts as consent. To compensate for the lack of universal, fail-safe rules, what is needed is an intensified collective reflection on consent and sexual grey areas, which can make individuals better equipped to identify and respect their own and others’ boundaries. An empirically rich and conceptually sophisticated contribution to understanding of sexual consent and sexual grey areas, Dynamics of Sexual Consent will be of interest to scholars and students of gender studies, sociology and criminology.

The Good Years: From 1900 to the First World War
by Walter LordThis New York Times bestseller by the author of A Night to Remember explores America in the years between the Gilded Age and the beginning of the Great War. Though remarkable in their own right, the first fifteen years of the 1900s had the misfortune of being sandwiched between—and overshadowed by—the Gilded Age and the First World War. In The Good Years, Walter Lord remedies this neglect, bringing to vivid life the events of 1900 to 1914, when industrialization made staggering advances, and the Wright brothers captured the world&’s imagination. Lord writes of Newport and Fifth Avenue, where the rich lived gaily and without much worry beyond the occasional economic panic. He also delves into the sweatshops of the second industrial revolution, where impoverished laborers and children suffered under unimaginable conditions. From the assassination of President McKinley to the hot and lazy &“last summer&” before the outbreak of war, Lord writes with insight and humor about the uniquely American energy and enthusiasm of those years before the Great War would forever change the world. From the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Incredible Victory and Day of Infamy, this is an &“informative and entertaining&” journey through an often-overlooked period of history at the beginning of the twentieth century (The New York Times).

Law and Politics in Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy
by Xinjun ZhangThis book analyzes the law and politics in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The “inalienable right” as provided for in Article IV of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) has unexpectedly been an interpretation riddle, which has brought about many controversies among NPT Party States, like those in the 1970s between the U.S. and its allies, and today in the Iranian nuclear problem and in the North Korean nuclear crisis. This book offers a detailed review and analysis of the lifetime of the norm on the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy: what factors give rise to a possible design of the dynamic treaty obligation, how they are made in drafting the relevant treaty provisions, and how subsequent practice plays a role in the interpretation. The usefulness of the general rule of interpretation is also challenged in this book, and an interdisciplinary perspective on interpretation is otherwise proposed to better understand the interplay of the law and politics in the nuclear nonproliferation regime.

Introduction to Galois Theory (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series)
by David Hernandez Yves LaszloThis textbook provides an undergraduate introduction to Galois theory and its most notable applications. Galois theory was born in the 19th century to study polynomial equations. Both powerful and elegant, this theory was at the origin of a substantial part of modern algebra and has since undergone considerable development. It remains an extremely active research subject and has found numerous applications beyond pure mathematics. In this book, the authors introduce Galois theory from a contemporary point of view. In particular, modern methods such as reduction modulo prime numbers and finite fields are introduced and put to use. Beyond the usual applications of ruler and compass constructions and solvability by radicals, the book also includes topics such as the transcendence of e and π, the inverse Galois problem, and infinite Galois theory. Based on courses of the authors at the École Polytechnique, the book is aimed at students with a standard undergraduate background in (mostly linear) algebra. It includes a collection of exam questions in the form of review exercises, with detailed solutions.
