Greenlights: Raucous Stories And Outlaw Wisdom From The Academy Award-winning Actor

by Matthew McConaughey

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • 6 MILLION COPIES SOLD WORLDWIDE! Discover the life-changing memoir that has inspired millions of readers through the Academy Award–winning actor&’s unflinching honesty, unconventional wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction.&“The No. 1 celebrity memoir of the past 10 years.&”—USA Today&“McConaughey&’s book invites us to grapple with the lessons of his life as he did—and to see that the point was never to win, but to understand.&”—Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ckI&’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life&’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call &“catching greenlights.&” So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops. Hopefully, it&’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot&’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears. It&’s a love letter. To life. It&’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too. Good luck.

1932: The Rise of Hitler and FDR--Two Tales of Politics, Betrayal, and Unlikely Destiny

by David Pietrusza

Two Depression-battered nations confronted destiny in 1932, going to the polls in their own way to anoint new leaders, to rescue their people from starvation and hopelessness. America would elect a Congress and a president—ebullient aristocrat Franklin Roosevelt or tarnished &“Wonder Boy&” Herbert Hoover. Decadent, divided Weimar Germany faced two rounds of bloody Reichstag elections and two presidential contests—doddering reactionary Paul von Hindenburg against rising radical hate-monger Adolf Hitler. The outcome seemed foreordained—unstoppable forces advancing upon crumbled, disoriented societies. A merciless Great Depression brought greater—perhaps hopeful, perhaps deadly—transformation: FDR&’s New Deal and Hitler&’s Third Reich. But neither outcome was inevitable.Readers enter the fray through David Pietrusza&’s page-turning account: Roosevelt&’s fellow Democrats may yet halt him at a deadlocked convention. 1928&’s Democratic nominee, Al Smith, harbors a grudge against his one-time protege. Press baron William Randolph Hearst lays his own plans to block Roosevelt&’s ascent to the White House. FDR&’s politically-inspired juggling of a New York City scandal threatens his juggernaut. In Germany, the Nazis surge at the polls but twice fall short of Reichstag majorities. Hitler, tasting power after a lifetime of failure and obscurity, falls to Hindenburg for the presidency—also twice within the year. Cabals and counter-cabals plot. Secrets of love and suicide haunt Hitler.Yet guile and ambition may yet still prevail.1932&’s breathtaking narrative covers two epic stories that possess haunting parallels to today&’s crisis-filled vortex. It is an all-too-human tale of scapegoats and panaceas, class warfare and racial politics, of a seemingly bottomless depression, of massive unemployment and hardship, of unprecedented public works/infrastructure programs, of business stimulus programs and damaging allegations of political cronyism, of waves of bank failures and of mortgages foreclosed, of Washington bonus marches and Berlin street fights, of once-solid financial empires collapsing seemingly overnight, of rapidly shifting social mores, and of mountains of irresponsible international debt threatening to crash not just mere nations but the entire global economy. It is the tale of spell-binding leaders versus bland businessmen and out-of-touch upper-class elites and of two nations inching to safety but lurching toward disaster. It is 1932&’s nightmare—with lessons for today.

Twitch Upon a Star: The Bewitched Life and Career of Elizabeth Montgomery

by Herbie J Pilato

Based on author Herbie J Pilato&’s exclusive interviews with Elizabeth Montgomery prior to her death in 1995, Twitch Upon a Star includes insider material and commentary from several individuals associated with her remarkable life and career before, during, and after Bewitched, including her classic feature films The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell (1955), Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed? (1963), and Johnny Cool (1963). Two of Montgomery&’s many popular TV movies, A Case of Rape (which remains one of the highest-rated TV-movies of all time) and The Legend of Lizzie Borden (which will soon be remade as a feature film), were groundbreaking and remain classics. But Twitch Upon a Star also goes behind the scenes to explore Montgomery&’s political activism, including her early advocacy for AIDS sufferers and the peace movement; her support for all minorities, including the gay community and the disabled; and her controversial participation as narrator of the1988 feature film documentary Cover-Up and its 1991 Oscar-winning sequel, The Panama Deception (both of which chronicled the Iran/Contra scandal of the 1980s). The book also explores Montgomery's tumultuous relationships with her father, screen legend Robert Montgomery (she was a liberal; he was a staunch conservative), and her four husbands (including actor Gig Young, who later died in a murder/suicide). Through it all—and to family and friends such as fellow performers Ronny Cox, Sally Kemp, and Florence Henderson—she was just Lizzie: down-to-earth and unaffected, just like Samantha, the "witch-with-a-twitch" Stephens, her most famous role.

Desert Storm Marines: A Marine Tank Company at War in the Gulf

by Jeff Dacus

From an historian and columnist in Leatherneck and Armor magazines, this is the exciting narrative account—based on interviews, first-person accounts, and official documents—of a group of Marine reservists during 1991&’s Operation Desert Shield/Storm. In this war, thousands of reservists are called up for the first time since the Korean War. The Marines of Bravo Company, 4th Tank Battalion, are hastily trained and sent into action leading the effort to free Kuwait. Defeating the Iraqis in battle after battle, the Marines reach Kuwait City, accomplishing their objective. Only a few weeks later, they are back home at their former jobs.During their deployment they face enemy tanks, mines, and artillery as well as their own bureaucracy, petty jealousies, and one officer that fails to live up to his oath. Their superior officers make debatable decisions, and the men are often unsupported. In the end, they find the support they need, the leadership they lack, and a comradeship comparable to historic units like the Band of Brothers, the Old Breed, Knights Templar, and Washington&’s Immortals.

Molecular Dynamics - Theory and Applications (Mechanical Engineering Series)

by Maurizio Bottoni Simone Mantovani Gaetano Zanghirati

This book originated from seminars given at the Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University, China, by the author in 1999. The courses gave graduate students a basic understanding of numerical techniques that would enable them to deal with problems of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and of molecular dynamics at research level. In subsequent years the lecture notes have been re-organized and implemented for students of atmospheric sciences of the Physics Department of the University of Ferrara, Italy. The lecture notes are divided into eight chapters, where some chapters are characterized by a scholastic approach. Specifically, Chapter 1 describes the theoretical basis of molecular dynamics, Chapter 2 gives examples of applications, like the Bénard problem; and Chapter 3 presents a summary of applications of DLA (Diffusion Limited Aggregation). The remainder of the book follows a less conventional approach, mainly informed by the author’s experience in the development of computer programs and in teaching. Chapter 4 is dedicated to a comparison of traditional and advanced methods of analysing nuclear safety problems in thermal and fast reactors, Chapter 5 concerns simulation of thermophoresis and aerosol displacement in atmospheric physics, and Chapter 6 discusses thermal confinement of cosmic particles due to thermophoretic forces in space domain. Addressing the recognized difficulty of proceeding from the theoretical formulations found in textbooks to properly working computer programs, and the typically large gap between the theoretical foundation and the final result, Molecular Dynamics - Theory and Applications is ideal for graduate level researchers and practitioners working in the development of codes for simulating physical problems.

by Victoria Eugenia Martín Osorio Beatriz Hernández Bolaños Wolf-Hermann Wildpret Martín Wolfredo Wildpret de la Torre

This book presents a detailed map of the Vegetation Series and Bioclimatic Belts that shape the high volcanic landscape of Tenerife. El Teide, part of the National Park of the same name, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 28, 2007. It is also a protected natural monument, encompassing the Teide-Pico Viejo volcanic complex, a large Vesuvian-type stratovolcano that has remained dormant since the Narices del Teide eruption in 1798, although the fumaroles that regularly emit from its crater show that it remains active. Mount Teide is the third highest and most voluminous volcanic structure on Earth, following Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. It is the highest elevation in both the Canary Islands and Spain. Its formation began approximately 170,000 years ago after the giant landslide destroyed a previous, even larger volcanic edifice. This book serves as an illustrated guide to the flora of Teide National Park. It provides taxonomic details, chorological distribution, and comprehensive cartography of species within the protected area. Information on endemicity, flowering and fruiting phenology, biotype, pollination, and dispersal mechanisms is included. Each species entry features a description of its genus and species, habitat, phytosociology, conservation status, threat categories, available germplasm banks, uses, and references. High-quality photographs highlight key identification traits. Additionally, the book includes a study of the main vegetation units of Tenerife&’s high-altitude landscape, mapping both Vegetation Series and Bioclimatic Belts.
