Hidden History of the Mississippi Delta (Hidden History)
by Ryan Starrett Joshua Keith ForemanUnearth bounty from the Mississippi Delta The conquistadors staggered through the Delta half-starved, mostly naked, dripping with swamp water. They became the first Europeans to walk in the shade of the Delta's ancient cypress trees, hear the howl of the red wolf, and eat the maize that would give the Delta its signature dish: the hot tamale. Over the centuries, the bountiful soil of the Delta would beckon to those from all over the world. Others came because they had no choice, tilling the land while they gave rise to a new and haunting music. Learn what the Delta was and what it became, and meet the characters who created what James C. Cobb called "the most southern place on earth." In this collection of the nearly forgotten, authors Ryan Starrett and Josh Foreman explore one of the most complicated and culturally rich areas in the country.
A History Lover's Guide to Mobile and the Alabama Gulf Coast (History Lovers Guide)
by Joe CuhajLocated almost dead center along the Gulf Coast, Mobile has seen a thing or two in its long history. The Port City has survived the ravages of hurricanes and yellow fever epidemics. It has been handed down from one nation to another not once but several times. The last major battle of the Civil War roared only miles away across its namesake bay, a few short years after the last slave ship, the Clotilda, arrived with its human contraband. But this city has had much to celebrate, as well. Mobile gave our nation its greatest party--Mardi Gras. It was also the birthplace of five Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famers. Author Joe Cuhaj serves as docent to the twists and turns of Mobile and the Alabama Gulf's fascinating past.
Atlanta Record Stores: An Oral History
by Chad RadfordAtlanta Record Stores is an oral history of the city's rock music scene, as witnessed through the lens of Criminal Records, Fantasyland, Wax 'N' Facts, and many more. This is a rock-centric take on a town that's so often praised and admired around the world as a hip-hop mecca. Here, the secret history of the underdogs--outsiders living among outsiders--are told. From Jarboe of SWANS to William DuVall of Alice In Chains and Neon Christ, to Kelly Hogan, and those surly guys behind the counter at Wuxtry, all were drawn by the irresistible lure of vinyl records, all found their communities and their own identities, leaving an indelible mark on the culture of Atlanta. Now, in their own voices, their stories are told.
Japanese in Wyoming: Union Pacific's Forgotten Labor Force (American Heritage)
by Mr. Daniel LyonImmigration in the Equality State Long before Heart Mountain Internment Camp brought Japanese prisoners to Wyoming, an immigrant work force put down lasting roots. Beginning in 1892, Japanese came to toil on Union Pacific's railroad and coal mines. But they weren't warmly welcomed. Newspapers charged every Japanese section worker was secret Japanese Army. Allegedly, "600 Japs in Utah, [and] about 400 in Wyoming and probably 100 in Colorado," were ready to serve Japan during the Japanese Russo War. George Wakimoto said the number was closer to six. Such misinformation about Japanese laborers spawned violence against Asians. The citizens of Evanston tried to blow them up. Rawlins ran the Japanese out of town. And in Laramie, young boys threw stones and dragged a Japanese man through the street. Author Dan Lyon chronicles Japanese perseverance, before and after both world wars, in their adopted state.
Made in Ohio: A History of Buckeye Invention & Ingenuity
by Conrade C. HindsAmerican Know How in the Heart of It All Ohio was and remains tailor made for commerce, transportation, invention, and manufacturing. Located between Lake Erie and the Ohio River, it was perfect for canals, railways, and, ultimately, highways, which allowed coal, iron ore, and oil into industrial centers such as Cleveland, Dayton, Akron, Youngstown, and Cincinnati. These powerhouses fostered the ingenuity and practical inventiveness that made Ohio a mecca for manufacturing. Beyond heavy industry, the state also nurtured the growth of All-American goods and brands like Quaker Oats and Smucker's jellies and jams, Diamond matches and Sherwin Williams paints, the Etch-A-Sketch and Play-Doh, and many, many more. Author Conrade C. Hinds places a spotlight on dreamers and builders in the Buckeye State.
Guitar Greats of Jacksonville
by Michael Ray FitzgeraldMelt your face off with the guitar greats of Jacksonville. In the 1960s, the electric guitar became for boys what Barbie was for girls. Legions of bands formed, composed of teens making a ruckus in the garage. But who could have guessed how many world-renowned greats would arise from the clangor? Guitar gods came forth from Los Angeles, London, Chicago, Nashville. But there is a southern city often overlooked, an unlikely incubator that produced more than a dozen greats. Legends such as Dickey Betts, Dave Hlubek, Duane Allman, Jeff Carlisi, Mike Campbell and Derek Trucks emerged from Jacksonville, a far-flung city detached from the music hubs. Why did Jacksonville give rise to so many greats? Author Michael Ray FitzGerald explores the origins of this rocking story while paying tribute to the youngsters from Jax who joined the ranks of the guitar gods.
Chicago Marching: A History of Protest, Authority & Violence
by Joseph Anthony RulliExamine the inflection points in Chicago's history of protest. A word packed with meaning and emotion, "protest" can be synonymous with both free speech and rioting. Chicago's citizens and city officials have a long and reactive relationship based on the tension between those differences of perspective, from the 1855 Lager Beer Riot to the conversation surrounding Black Lives Matter and the flashpoints of extreme political polarization. But what led to pivotal events like 1886's Haymarket Affair or 1963's massive school boycotts? Joseph Rulli seeks to understand what provoked an explosion into violence or elicited a heavy-handed response.
Lost Attractions of Florida
by James C. ClarkEverybody knows about Disney World, Universal, EPCOT, Sea World and a slew of other Florida attractions. But how about bygone Sunshine State attractions such as Texas Jim's Sarasota Reptile Farm and Zoo, the Skull Kingdom, the House of Mystery or Dixieland Amusement Park. Many were roadside stops started by families as an extension of a fruit stand or market. Oranges and sodas in the front, alligators in the back. Many of the attractions were free, designed to lure customers for the fruit stand or store. Others changed a small fee. Some became nationally known, such as Cypress Gardens, where Johnny Carson not only broadcast, but water-skied. The roadside attractions had their heyday from the 1920s to the coming of Disney in 1971. It was a much simpler time, and a large tree known as The Senator could become a top attraction, along with a St. Petersburg drug store. Revisit these lost attractions with author Jim Clark.

The Crowded Hour: Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Riders, and the Dawn of the American Century
by Clay RisenA NEW YORK TIMES 100 NOTABLE BOOKS OF 2019 SELECTION The dramatic story of the most famous regiment in American history: the Rough Riders, a motley group of soldiers led by Theodore Roosevelt, whose daring exploits marked the beginning of American imperialism in the 20th century. When America declared war on Spain in 1898, the US Army had just 26,000 men, spread around the country—hardly an army at all. In desperation, the Rough Riders were born. A unique group of volunteers, ranging from Ivy League athletes to Arizona cowboys and led by Theodore Roosevelt, they helped secure victory in Cuba in a series of gripping, bloody fights across the island. Roosevelt called their charge in the Battle of San Juan Hill his &“crowded hour&”—a turning point in his life, one that led directly to the White House. &“The instant I received the order,&” wrote Roosevelt, &“I sprang on my horse and then my &‘crowded hour&’ began.&” As The Crowded Hour reveals, it was a turning point for America as well, uniting the country and ushering in a new era of global power. Both a portrait of these men, few of whom were traditional soldiers, and of the Spanish-American War itself, The Crowded Hour dives deep into the daily lives and struggles of Roosevelt and his regiment. Using diaries, letters, and memoirs, Risen illuminates a disproportionately influential moment in American history: a war of only six months&’ time that dramatically altered the United States&’ standing in the world. In this brilliant, enlightening narrative, the Rough Riders—and a country on the brink of a new global dominance—are brought fully and gloriously to life.

There, on what he called “the cursed rock,” with no chance of escape, he found an unexpected ally: a spirited British teenager named Betsy Balcombe who lived on the island with her family. While Napoleon waited for his own accommodations to be made livable, the Balcombe family played host to the infamous exile, a decision that would have far-reaching consequences for them all. In Napoleon’s Last Island, based on a true story, acclaimed author Thomas Keneally re-creates Betsy’s powerful and complex friendship with the man dubbed The Great Ogre, her clashes and alliances with his remaining courtiers, and her uneasy journey to adulthood as she begins to see the imperfections and weaknesses of human nature. As he brings a fascinating period vividly to life, Keneally shines a fresh light on one of history’s most enigmatic, charismatic figures. “The book is a complex and mesmerizing success,” raves the Christian Science Monitor, hailing it as “a masterpiece in miniature…unfailingly great reading [and] testimony to the fact that Keneally is our greatest living practitioner of historical fiction.”
