Political Agency Online: Ethics and Affects in an Age of Ethno-Nationalism (Routledge Studies in Affective Societies)
by Max KramerThis book examines the ways that political agency can be understood in digitally dominated media environments. Kramer shows how emotional work on the online-active self is both culturally and institutionally embedded. Filling a gap in the scholarship on the affective conditions of agency, this book conceptualizes political agency online through case studies that center on the creativity of—and difficulties faced by—Indian Muslims who run popular handles on social networking sites. The book will appeal to scholars and students interested in affect and emotion, digital and political ethics, media anthropology, South Asian studies, mediation and Muslim politics in India.
Political Economy of Eco-sustainable Alternatives: Progressive and Equitable Futures (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy)
by Richard WestraWestra recounts how the unceremonious collapse of Soviet-style socialism, coupled with mounting awareness of unfolding environmental destruction and irreversible climate change opened the door to a new, wide-ranging, social change literature. In this exciting book, he begins by tracing out the case for the Anthropocene. He then provides an unparalleled, inclusive critical exploration of the plurality of progressive designs on offer. These include the Green New Deal, “nowtopias” of cooperative, solidarity and commoning economies, ecofeminism, Degrowth society as well as ecosocialism and democratic socialism.Westra firstly explains why the Green New Deal program to sustainably develop capitalism is unworkable given the boundedness of resources necessary to generalize the advanced economy “way of life” it seeks to maintain. Secondly, while he concurs with much that the new social change literature offers, his concern is with the way it abandons a major caution that had been leveled at so-called “utopian socialists” in the past. To be sure, the problem does not reside with bursts of creative, future-directed thinking in themselves. Rather, where difficulties arise is over the paucity of attention devoted to questions of economic coordination and principles of economic viability. Westra explains how only by combining several economic principles, each operating at a determinate scale and devoted to specific elements of human social and material reproduction, will the promise of an equitable, eco-sustainable human future be realized. This unique volume will be of interest to academic specialists and students of political economy, economics, environmental sustainability, sociology and political science. Progressive policymakers and social activists will also find its arguments refreshing and compelling.
Political Marketing on Social and Mobile Media: Remaking the Paradigm? (Routledge Studies in Media, Communication, and Politics)
by Melissa M. SmithThis book explores how social and mobile media have been used in political campaigns since 2008, examining how social media are already being implemented as well as how these types of messaging platforms might be used in the future.Chapters in this book discuss how social and mobile media are becoming imperative when marketing a candidate’s image, distributing messages, fundraising, and getting out the vote. While some chapters delve into a particular candidate’s campaign, others discuss several campaigns in light of a particular political objective. Authors also discuss the use of political messaging and its possible role in political polarization through misinformation and interference. In particular, the book seeks to demonstrate a greater reliance on social and mobile media for political messaging, thus ushering in a possible new marketing paradigm. This book will interest researchers and students in the areas of political communication, political science, government, public affairs, and social and digital media.
Political Outbreaks against the Liberal Order: Narratives, Practices and Celebrations (Routledge Studies in Modern European History)
by Annarita Gori Giorgia Priorelli Maximiliano Fuentes CoderaThis book offers a fresh perspective on right-wing and left-wing revolutions, as well as political uprisings against the liberal order in interwar Europe, focusing on how they were politically used in the public sphere and exploring how these events were narrated and visually represented to justify new authoritarian systems and generate consensus around them.Bringing together both senior academics and early-career scholars, the volume examines ten emblematic case studies combining original research on overlooked aspects of well-known events with analyses of lesser-studied, or even ‘peripheral’ cases. To provide a comprehensive understanding, the contributors approach the subject from multiple angles, spanning political and cultural history, the history of ideology and emotions, and gender history. Moreover, with a transnational perspective, the book examines how anti-liberal and anti-democratic ideas crossed borders, shaping movements, parties, and regimes by influencing their symbolic practices and aesthetics — elements that were borrowed, adapted and reinterpreted to create a shared political language across Europe and beyond.Chapter 7 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Politics by Any Other Name: Bureaucratic Struggle, Lawfare and Violence in American Politics
by Benjamin GinsbergThis book critiques a modern U.S. political system characterized by the partisan weaponization of bureaucratic systems and institutions.Competition for political power in the United States today is not just about winning elections. Competing political forces attempt to win at the polls, but they do not bet all their chips on electoral outcomes. Each party has built an institutional bastion within portions of the federal bureaucracy. Each party makes use of judicial and criminal proceedings for partisan purposes—a practice dubbed “lawfare” by the national media. And, acting through various surrogates, each party sponsors “violence by proxy,” to achieve its ends. To the extent that political struggles are fought outside the electoral arena, ordinary Americans have little or no voice in public affairs. And, unfortunately, in the United States today, a good deal of political struggle takes place outside the electoral arena. This book will be used in undergraduate and graduate classes in political parties, electoral politics, and in general U.S. government classes.
Politics, Conflict and the Monastic Topography of 15th-Century Constantinople (Birmingham Byzantine and Ottoman Studies)
by Nicholas MelvaniThis study of Constantinople's monasteries within their urban framework during the last decades of Byzantium (1394–1453) explores the activity of monks, nuns, and affiliated laypeople such as patrons just before the city’s Ottoman conquest and transformation into the capital of an Islamic Empire. The book captures aspects of Byzantine institutions, social and economic networks, scholarly and artistic activity, spiritual trends, and the city’s appearance during its final phase as the capital of the Byzantine Empire, when culture and religious life were caught between the Italian Renaissance and the Ottoman expansion. The Byzantine capital was merely the nucleus of a city-state, but still preserved a part of its imperial heritage and memories of its past glory. The chapters tell the story of Constantinople at the moment the city’s monuments and built environment left their final mark on the landscape on the shores of the Bosporus. These fresh insights into Byzantine religious, cultural, and urban history – and updated picture of one of the most legendary cities of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period – will appeal not only to scholars and students of Byzantine and Ottoman culture, but also to anyone interested in the entangled world of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Population Aging in Societal Context: Evidence from Nepal (Routledge Contemporary Asia Series)
by Mark Tausig Janardan Subedi Saruna GhimireThis book offers an explanatory schema for comprehending aging in a societal context, focusing on the country of Nepal.Contributions to this book use an institutional contextual approach and a life course perspective to document and assess societal responses to the increase in the number of older adults in a specific country. This emerging age group entails the development of new and modified social institutions, new and modified cultural norms, and the reallocation of social resources within a given country. The study represents a means to understand the status and needs of older adults systematically and to orient policies and programs intended to address the increase in the older population. It can be applied to countries grappling with similar challenges of rapid population aging and significant social change.A pioneering effort in understanding aging as a social process embedded in social, economic, cultural, and life course contexts, this book fills a gap in Asian Studies, Social Policy, and Population Studies.
Populism and Modern Monetary Theory: Exploring the Rise of Milei in Argentina (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy)
by Can CinarCentred on Javier Milei’s recent ascent, this book explores the cyclical nature of Argentina's economic crises and the corresponding rise of populist leaders. It argues that populism represents a revolutionary stance that should be reclaimed by progressive movements, examining the relationship between financial turbulence and populist allure through the lens of heterodox economics, particularly Modern Monetary Theory. It also provides a fresh re-reading of Argentine history leading up to Milei’s presidency, using post-Keynesian framework to analyse the complex interplay between fiscal policies and political ideologies. The book demonstrates how Modern Monetary Theory can theoretically justify expansive fiscal policies central to populist platforms, enriching debates about the economic viability of populist governance. Milei's unique blend of heterodox economic policies and populist rhetoric, characterised by deregulation, privatization, and radical reductions in government spending, presents a crucial juncture for examining intersections between economic principles and populist mechanics. Integrating economic theory, historical context, and political analysis, this work contributes to political economy, heterodox economics, and Latin American studies.
Port Economics and Business
by Hilde Meersman Thierry Vanelslander Eddy Van de VoordeThere is growing interest in the port economy in all its facets from the business world, political decision-making and scientific research. In a constantly evolving port environment, pertinent questions arise every day, concerning aspects of financing infrastructure and operations, competitiveness, productivity and horizontal and/or vertical cooperation. All actors involved want to know the economic consequences of decisions that are made, both in terms of commercial companies located within the port perimeter and in terms of the port authority or manager and the government. Port Economics and Business therefore attempts to fill this important gap.All important aspects of port activities are analysed in an economic manner. The economic decisions of providers and users of port services are studied. All actors who use the port infrastructure in one way or another are explicitly discussed. As far as freight traffic is concerned, this involves shipping companies, transshipment and storage companies, land transport and all possible suppliers and service providers. For passenger traffic, in a similar way, this concerns ferry and cruise lines, terminal operators, land operators and all possible suppliers. The book provides the reader with tools to solve port-related problems independently in the next phase. Emphasising economic aspects and decision-making, Port Economics and Business is a vital resource for students and researchers in port economics and management as well as professional port managers.

Post-Colonial Realism: Cultural Conflicts, Cuisine, and the Changing International System
by Hanna Samir KassabIn Post-Colonial Realism, Hanna Samir Kassab develops a theoretical framework to explain, understand, and predict international conflict, placing culture at the center of international political analysis.Kassab contends that nationalism, a belief system, forms an intervening variable that shapes the foreign policy behavior of states. Studying food is central to understanding nationalist belief systems that shape international politics. By combining theories of nationalism with post-colonialist understandings of cultural revitalization, Kassab conceptualizes state motivation to understand how cultural symbols shape nationalist identities, to see the fault lines of civilization through food, and to appreciate the centrality of identity issues. Using ethnography to understand food ownership as part of nationalist conflict, Kassab examines neighboring states (Greece, North Macedonia, Turkey and Armenia) alongside India. In each country study chapter, he compares at least two nationalisms and views of cuisine ownership. He later maps out potential future flashpoints as the international system becomes increasingly competitive due to the changing structure of the international system: unipolarity to multipolarity.Post-Colonial Realism offers a more robust and flexible theory of international relations, concentrating not on abstractions but on individuals and their collective beliefs.
Post-Monolingual Anglophone Novels: Writing Beyond English (Routledge Studies in Comparative Literature)
by Birgit NeumannEngaging with recent research in literary multilingualism studies, the global anglophone and comparative studies, this book theorizes the so-called post-monolingual anglophone novels. Inspired by Yasemin Yildiz’s Beyond the Mother Tongue: The Postmonolingual Condition (2012), post-monolingual anglophone novels are understood as literary texts that activate multi- and translingual strategies to mount a challenge to the “monolingual norm” and the homogenizing aspirations of English. Post-monolingual anglophone novels employ literary configurations of multi- and translingualism without ignoring the ongoing validity of the monolingual norm in the international book market and the power differentials inherent in English. This corpus of texts is therefore highly self-conscious about the use of language. As post-monolingual novels stage exchange and movement between languages, they also model, in the realm of fiction, new concepts of language. In several case studies of contemporary anglophone post-monolingual novels from different parts of the world, the book demonstrates how the post-monolingual in literature operates within different cultural and political contexts. The readings of Arundhati Roy’s The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, Yvonne A. Owuor’s The Dragonfly Sea, Marlon James’ A Brief History of Seven Killings, J.M. Coetzee’s The Childhood of Jesus and Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous propose theoretically and methodologically innovative ways of engaging with literary multi- and translingualism. While the analyses focus on the post-monolingual poetics, they also direct attention to the novels’ modes of production and circulation in the anglosphere.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Shakespeare (Routledge Studies in Shakespeare)
by Kelsey RidgePost-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Shakespeare combines literary criticism, performance studies, psychiatric literature, trauma studies, and disability studies to examine the presentation of PTSD in Shakespeare’s plays. This volume takes as case studies 1 Henry IV, Othello, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, and Troilus and Cressida. This character-based, interdisciplinary approach places Shakespeare’s texts and their production histories in conversation with current scientific research by blending literary analysis, medical and psychosocial research, memoirs and patient accounts, and performance history. This research deepens our understanding of representations of trauma in early modern literature and reveals what the artistic representations of trauma and PTSD in the early modern period can tell us about the history of this condition. It reminds us that people lived with PTSD long before the APA codified the condition in the 1980s; it places this condition in a longer historical continuity. With this knowledge, we can better consider the role Shakespeare can play in how we respond to trauma and psychological injury now.

Post-War Public Housing and Well-Being: Modernity, Economic Recovery, and Social Change
by Izumi KuroishiThis collection illustrates the evolving role of housing as a symbol of modernity, a tool for economic recovery and a response to societal transitions. It argues that understanding earlier efforts to integrate well-being in the twentieth century can provide valuable insights for contemporary actors in the built environment who are working to address these issues today. As such, it explores and shines light on this lesser-known history, drawing on case studies, it focuses on the intersection of public housing, well-being and social change in the aftermath of the Second World War. With case studies from the UK, US, Singapore, Japan, Germany, China and Spain, this volume provides insights into how these countries have shaped the values, designs and institutions of their dwellings. By incorporating diverse cultural contexts, it contributes to a nuanced understanding of housing dynamics and well-being. Through a multidisciplinary lens, this volume encourages a re-evaluation of living conditions and fundamental values, emphasising the dynamic interplay between humans, their social environment and diverse living environments. This book is essential for scholars, researchers, professionals, students, policymakers and practitioners in cultural history, architecture, planning, urban studies, sociology, education and public policy.

Postcolonial Copyright Law: Lessons on Community and Coloniality from Thailand (Intellectual Property, Theory, Culture)
by Mespiti PoolsavasdiThis book appraises postcolonial perspectives to rethink the meaning of copyright and makes suggestions for its future within the global landscape of intellectual property law.Drawing on the experience of Thailand as a case study, a country with a unique yet marginal position in discussions on colonialism, the book offers valuable insights for the international field of copyright law. Thai copyright law emerged in an era when the threat of European colonial powers inspired local ruling elites to embark on a quest for modernisation and establish a modern absolutist state. One can observe similar dynamics in the recent promotion of Thailand’s Creative Economy. Contrary to these top-down developments, the book argues for greater attention to attitudes and practices on the ground. Taking an interdisciplinary approach informed by film studies, area studies, decolonial studies, and legal sociology, the book makes a case to redefine copyright as a community resource. The book will be of interest to researchers in the field of copyright law, postcolonial and decolonial studies, and sociolegal studies.
