Adipose-Derived Stem Cells: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology #2783)
by Bruce A. Bunnell Jeffrey M. Gimble Trivia Frazier Cecilia SanchezSince the publication of the previous editions, there has been increased focus on the use of adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (ASC) and stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells in three-dimensional hydrogel-based scaffolds for the development of microphysiological systems (MPS) serving as in vitro humanized assays and alternatives to in vivo pre-clinical animal models. This third edition volume discusses of the latest technology and advancements in the field of human-derived ASC and SVF. The chapters in this book are organized into four parts. Part One focuses on human ASC’s isolation, characterization, and differentiation. Part Two describes the isolation and characterization of ASC and SVF from canine, feline, and murine tissues. Part Three looks at hydrogels, scaffolds, and microphysiological systems, and Part Four talks about the new assays and applications using ASC. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.Cutting-edge and comprehensive, Adipose-Derived Stem Cells: Methods and Protocols, Third Edition is a valuable resource for both novice and experts researchers interested in learning more about this important and developing field.
A Transition to Sustainable Housing: Progress and Prospects for a Low Carbon Housing Future
by Trivess Moore Andréanne DoyonThis open access book explores the environmental, social, and financial challenges of housing provision, and the urgent need for a sustainable housing transition. The authors explore how market failures have impacted the scaling up of sustainable housing and the various policy attempts to address this. Going beyond an environmental focus, the book explores a range of housing-related challenges including social justice and equity issues. Sustainability transitions theory is presented as a framework to help facilitate a sustainable housing transition and a range of contemporary case studies are explored on issues including high performing housing, small housing, shared housing, neighbourhood-scale housing, circular housing, and innovative financing for housing. It is an important new resource that challenges policy makers, planners, housing construction industry stakeholders, and researchers to rethink what housing is, how we design and construct it, and how we can better integrate impacts on households to wider policy development.
Constructing a Consumer-Focused Industry: Cracks, Cladding and Crisis in the Residential Construction Sector (Social Value in the Built Environment)
by Trivess Moore David OswaldThe old saying ‘safe as houses’ is being challenged around the world like never before. Over recent decades homeowners have experienced the devastating effects of defects like asbestos, leaky buildings, structural failings, and more recently the combustible cladding crisis. The provision of safe and secure housing is a critical starting point to ensure that social value can be delivered in the built environment. However, some of these dangerous defects have resulted in a lack of security, safety, health, well-being, and social value for households and the wider community. The problems homeowners experience go beyond the substantial financial costs for defect rectification. Too often there has been a lack of government and industry support to help the housing consumer through these issues or to prevent them from occurring to begin with. It is time for a rethink and restructure of government policy, support, and industry practices to better protect housing consumers and deliver high-quality and sustainable housing that creates social value. Through evidence-based research and international case studies, this book focuses on the effects that dangerous defects have on the housing consumer. The ongoing construction cladding crisis is used as a primary case study throughout to highlight these implications, with other previous large-scale defect examples, such as leaky buildings and asbestos. Based upon the range of emerging evidence, we propose ideas for policy makers, construction and built environment professionals, owners corporations, and households on how to move forward towards a higher-quality, sustainable, and socially valuable way of residential living. Government policy has long focused on ‘making industry work’ through building regulations and standards. It is now time for greater government and industry focus on the consumer to make ‘consumer protection work’ in the built environment. There is a need to prevent dangerous defects like combustible cladding, better support consumers when defects emerge, and to create buildings for social value rather than minimum standards. Now is the time to build a better future for the end-user.

It is divided into four main parts discussing policies, climate, and carbon footprint and presenting case studies on the energy performance and indoor environmental quality of various building types. The book is intended for readers wanting to understand the various policies related to different buildings types and their energy performance.
Urban Sustainability Transitions
by Trivess Moore Fjalar De Haan Ralph Horne Brendan James GleesonThis book contributes to current debates regarding purposive transitions to sustainable cities, providing an accessible but critical exploration of sustainability transitions in urban settings. We have now entered the urban century, which is not without its own challenges, as discussed in the preceding book of this series. Urbanization is accompanied by a myriad of complex and overlapping environmental, social and governance challenges - which increasingly call into question conventional, market-based responses and simple top-down government interventions. Faced with these challenges, urban practitioners and scholars alike are interested in promoting purposive transitions to sustainable cities. The chapters in this volume contribute to the growing body of literature on city-scale transformative change, which seeks to address a lack of consideration for spatial and urban governance dimensions in sustainability transitions studies, and expand on the basis established in the preceding book. Drawing on a range of perspectives and written by leading Australian and international urban researchers, the chapters explore contemporary cases from Australia and locate them within the international context. Australia is on the one hand representative of many OECD countries, while on the other possessing a number of unique attributes that may serve to highlight issues and potentials internationally. Australia is a highly urbanized country and because of the federal political structure and the large distances, the five largest state-capital cities have a relatively high degree of autonomy in governance - even dominating the rest of their respective states and rural hinterlands to a certain extent. This context suggests that Australian cases can provide interesting "test-tube" perspectives on processes relevant to urban sustainability transitions worldwide. This volume presents an extensive overview of theories, concepts, approaches and practical examples informed by sustainability transitions thinking, offering a unique resource for all urban practitioners and scholars who want to understand and transition to sustainable urban futures.

Biomedical Aspects of Histamine: Current Perspectives
by Nancy Khardori Mohammed Shahid Rahat Ali Khan Trivendra TripathiSince its identification by Sir Henry H. Dale a century ago, histamine has become one of the most important multifunctional biogenic amines in the field of biomedicine. The pharmacological effects of histamine are mediated through four types of membrane histamine receptors; H1R, H2R, H3R and H4R, which are all heptahelical G-protein-coupled receptors. It has been known to play the broadest spectrum of activities in various physiological and pathological conditions including cell proliferation, differentiation, hematopoiesis, embryonic development, regeneration, wound healing, aminergic neurotransmission and numerous brain functions, secretion of pituitary hormones, regulation of gastrointestinal and circulatory functions, cardiovascular system, as well as inflammatory reactions, modulation of the immune response, endocrine function and homeostasis, and other important areas. This book is a compendium of the current state of established and investigational literature on Histamine, its receptors and their Agonists and antagonists. It provides a comprehensive overview of histamine biology in the field of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, allergy, neurobiology, pharmacology, microbiology and reproductive biology. The first section on Histamine biology and physiology leads into subsequent sections on enzymology, pharmacology, regulation of the immune system and cell proliferation and role in allergic and other diseases including acid peptic diseases, inflammatory diseases, autoimmune and cancer diseases, nervous system, reproductive functions and hematopoiesis. The compilation of chapters in the book presents the most recent advances in histamine research and bridges the basic and clinical aspects of histamine biology.

Margarita Valencia
