Salt Sugar Smoke: How to preserve fruit, vegetables, meat and fish

by Diana Henry

This comprehensive book takes a fresh look at preserving, offering all the basic information you need, but also featuring inspirational recipes from the store cupboards of the world. It covers everything from jams to cures, and shows you that you don't have to have lots of kit and produce to make delicious preserves - or wait forever before eating them. There are sections filled with expert advice on choosing ingredients and cooking every type of preserve, from marmalades to jellies to relishes to foods preserved in oil. All the classic recipes are included and Diana often gives tips for how to make a version of a classic that suits your palette. For example, she includes a sweet and sticky strawberry jam, a more-fruity and less sweet version, and a Swedish 'nearly' strawberry jam (which is more like a conserve and keeps in the fridge for only a couple of weeks). But this is also a treasure trove of recipes taken from the world's store cupboards. And most of them are luxuries that can be made from cheap ingredients - such as Thai spiced rhubarb relish, Alsace pear and Riesling jam and tea-smoked trout. Many recipes will also offer alternative ingredients - for example, make sloe gin with cranberries or plums.

Mathematical Models of Meaning: A Dynamic Systems Approach to Possible World Semiotics

by Paul Kockelman

A mathematical model of meaning that captures the dynamics and diversity of meaning-oriented agents. In Mathematical Models of Meaning, Paul Kockelman offers answers to the following kinds of questions: What is meaning? What is the relation between meaning, information, value, and purpose? What ingredients are necessary for a system to exhibit meaning? What behaviors, and capacities for behavior, are particular to meaning-oriented agents? Is there a relatively simple mathematical model that can adequately capture the dynamics—and diversity—of meaning-oriented agents? And finally, how can we best bridge the divide between interpretive paradigms that are qualitative and context rich and formal methods that are quantitative and domain general?Partially grounded in a pragmatist approach, this book rethinks the semiotic, statistical, and logical currents of Charles Sanders Peirce&’s thought in relation to more recent developments in allied traditions. Putting possible worlds, as well as social relations, at the center of significance, it focuses on the emergence of meaningful behavior among relatively distributed agents that choose in real time, learn over developmental time, or evolve over phylogenetic time.

The Second Bill of Rights: FDR's Constitutional Vision and Why We Need It Today, with a new preface by the author

by Cass R. Sunstein

How our economic rights are fundamental to the security and stability of our democracy. In 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave a State of the Union Address that should be counted as the greatest political speech of the twentieth century. In it, Roosevelt grappled with the definition of security in a democracy, concluding that &“unless there is security here at home, there cannot be lasting peace in the world.&” To help ensure that security, he proposed a &“Second Bill of Rights&”—economic rights that he saw as necessary to political freedom, including a right to education, a right to adequate health care, a right to a home, and a right to protection against destitution. Many of the great legislative achievements of the past eighty years stem from Roosevelt&’s vision. In The Second Bill of Rights, Cass Sunstein uses this speech as a launching point to show how these rights are vital to the continuing security of our nation. This is an ambitious, sweeping book that argues for a new vision of FDR, of constitutional history, and of our current political scene that has never been more urgent or more relevant.

A Sound So Very Loud: The Inside Story of Every Song Oasis Recorded

by Ted Kessler

The first definitive history of the iconic band Oasis, as told through their music and using their songs as the starting point.A Sound So Very Loud is the first book to offer a definitive history of Oasis as narrated through their music, using their songs as the foundation, but breaking out more widely to include sections of background and cultural context. It's written by leading music journalists Ted Kessler and Hamish MacBain, who have very close ties to the band and their management, and have interviewed the Gallaghers dozens of times. There has never been a definitive, forensically detailed history of Oasis and their music; a book that takes readers to the heart of the band&’s work and what lay behind it in the kind of deeply researched, knowledgeable detail that has been afforded The Beatles, perhaps most notably with Ian MacDonald&’s Revolution In the Head, which examined every Beatles song in chronological detail. MacBain and Kessler&’s intention is to write the book that satisfies the many millions of fans globally similarly obsessed with Oasis&’s music, but who currently only have scattered social media pages to turn to add depth to the story. These authors deliver the definitive, chronological history of the songs of Oasis that will appeal to fans old and new, in doing so, bringing the wider Oasis story into play in glorious color. The pair have interviewed both Gallaghers dozens of times between 1994 and 2024, and no other journalists can claim more—or more lively—encounters with Liam and Noel. The book will also revisit each interview in the first-person, chronologically throughout, to add unique perspective and texture to the wider story. MacBain and Kessle will also dissect sleeve-art with the designers and photographers, delving into each detail surrounding the band. This is a veritable Oasis treasure trove!

How Merck and Drug Regulators Hid Serious Harms of the HPV Vaccines

by Peter C. Gøtzsche

This is a story of scientific misconduct, committed by Merck, the fourth biggest drug company in the world. Merck has committed scientific misconduct before, and the author describes the fraud related to Merck&’s arthritis drug, Vioxx, which killed tens of thousands of patients because Merck concealed that it causes heart attacks. In his role as an expert witness in a lawsuit against Merck, Dr. Peter C. Gøtzsche read 112,452 pages of confidential study reports about Merck&’s HPV vaccine Gardasil, corresponding to five hundred medium-sized books, and wrote an expert report of three hundred fifty pages with four appendices. Dr. Gøtzsche reveals that Merck used numerous tactics to avoid reporting serious neurological harms of Gardasil, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), which, in his view, in some cases constituted outright fraud. How Merck and Drug Regulators Hid Serious Harms of the HPV Vaccines details how the drug agencies were complicit in scientific misconduct and gives many examples that other authorities also provided seriously misleading information about the benefits and harms of the HPV vaccines. Dr. Gøtzsche gives a rare insight into the behavior of drug company lawyers when a company comes under attack for having concealed serious harms of its drug. He describes how he was harassed by Merck&’s lawyer who tried to impugn his character and scientific credibility in ways, which included setting up traps for him during his deposition. If anyone was in doubt whether Merck and our authorities can be trusted, this book gives the answer.

Deficit Delusion: Why Everything Left, Right, and Supply-Side Tells You About the National Debt Is Wrong

by John Tamny

There&’s a growing consensus about the causes of budget deficits and the national debt. And that&’s the problem. At present, members of the Left claim that higher rates of taxation levied on the rich are the fix, members of the Right call for a combination of spending cuts, tax increases and entitlement reform, while supply siders confidently assert that the path out of debt is tax cuts that will shower the Treasury with higher tax revenues borne of soaring economic growth. The solutions flamboyantly mistake the problem. In his latest and arguably most pathbreaking book, Parkview Institute president John Tamny asks readers to contemplate government debt in an all-new way, and in doing so makes a powerful case that deficits and the national debt will continue to grow precisely because left, right and supply side profoundly misunderstand why there&’s debt in the first place. While the warring ideologies promote what they imagine are different solutions to the perceived debt problem, it&’s lost on them that they&’re basically saying the same thing: an insufficiency of federal tax revenue has resulted in deficits and debt that seemingly soar without endpoint. Tamny makes a case that the arguments fail repeatedly precisely because they&’re backwards. Drawing on examples from private individuals and businesses, Tamny turns the debt discussion on its head. Far from a signal of insufficient revenue, Tamny shows that government debt is a logical and perilous effect of market optimism about rising tax revenues now, and much more dangerous, the expectation of exponentially more tax revenue in the future. Readers of The Deficit Delusion will gradually see the folly of a deficit and debt discussion that has grown stale and terribly confused, all the while looking at the Reagan tax cuts, skyrocketing government debt in California, entitlement reform, and the soaring national debt through an entirely different lens. Far from an apology for all the government debt, Tamny makes a passionate case that the debt crisis is not what the alarmists of the competing ideologies imagine it to be, but is instead one of soaring tax revenue itself that, if unchecked, will render the national debt of the moment rather pedestrian in comparison to what&’s ahead. For far too long readers have been inundated with the same arguments and same solutions dressed up differently to feed the differing views of the competing ideologies. With The Deficit Delusion, readers finally have a book that will prove the mask-off moment for left, right and supply side.
