Emotional Justice: A Roadmap for Racial Healing

by Esther A. Armah

It is time for an emotional reckoning on our path to racial healing, sustainable equity, and the future of DEI. Here's the tool to help us navigate it. In this groundbreaking book, Esther Armah argues that the crucial missing piece to racial healing and sustainable equity is emotional justice-a new racial healing language to help us do our emotional work. This work is part of the emotional reckoning we must navigate if racial healing is to be more than a dream. We all-white, Black, Brown-have our emotional work that we need to do. But that work is not the same for all of us. This emotional work means unlearning the language of whiteness, a narrative that centers white people, particularly white men, no matter the deadly cost and consequence to all women and to global Black and Brown people. That's why a new racial healing language is crucial. Emotional Justice grapples with how a legacy of untreated trauma from oppressive systems has created and sustained dual deadly fictions: white superiority and Black inferiority that shape-and wound-all of us. These systems must be dismantled to build a future that serves justice to everyone, not just some of us. We are the dismantlers we have been waiting for, and emotional justice is the game changer for a just future that benefits all of us.

Good Company: Business Success in the Worthiness Era

by Laurie Bassi Ed Frauenheim Dan McMurrer Larry Costello

We're losing patience with bad companies. We're fed up with the greed of Goldman Sachs, sickened by BP's pollution, tired of tainted food, tightfisted employers, and phony "corporate social responsibility." And Laurie Bassi and her co-authors have news: the "bad boy" days are over. We're at the dawn of the Worthiness Era, when doing the right thing is no longer optional--it's the key to success. And they've got the data to prove it. Good Company lays out the convergence of social, economic, and political forces-- ranging from the explosion of online information sharing to the emergence of the ethical consumer and the rapid expansion of the green market--that are ushering in this new era. Moreover, the authors prove the connection between good corporate behavior and the bottom line with their Good Company Index. Using publicly available information as well as original research, the Good Company Index evaluates each of the Fortune 100 companies as an employer, seller, and steward and then gives it a final grade. Among the surprising findings: only two Fortune 100 companies get an A, while a number of highly respected companies get a C or worse. Overall, companies in the same industry with higher rankings on the index consistently outperform their competitors. And this is not some academic exercise: the authors have used the principles of the index at their own investment firm to deliver market-beating results. Using a host of real-world examples Bassi and company carefully explain each aspect of corporate worthiness, offering companies a guide to what it now takes to win customer loyalty. Good Company moves the debate about corporate citizenship from the realm of faith to the realm of facts, showing it's no longer a question of ethics or virtue: it's a matter of survival.Winner of the gold medal in the Business/Leadership category of the 2012 Nautilus Book Awards and Choice Magazine's Outstanding Academic Title Award.

Beyond the Rainbow: A Mother’s Journey Through Grief to Grace

J. E. B. Stuart: The Soldier and the Man

by Edward G. Longacre

Edward Longacre provides a balanced portrait of the Civil War's famed cavalryman, J. E. B. Stuart, debunking myths to reveal a complex man known for both his military brilliance and personal flaws. Fifteen years have passed since the publication of the last biography of Jeb Stuart. Several appeared during the last century lauding his contributions to Confederate fortunes in the Eastern Theater. Each follows a familiar tradition established by hero-worshipping subordinates portraying its subject as a model of chivalric conduct with a romantic’s outlook on life and a sense of fair dealing and goodwill, even toward his enemy. J. E. B. Stuart: The Soldier and the Man, by award-winning author Edward Longacre, is the first balanced, detailed, and thoroughly scrutinized study of the life and service of the Civil War’s most famous cavalryman. Long known to scholars and history buffs alike as “The Beau Sabreur of the Confederacy,” James Ewell Brown Stuart of Virginia was possessed of many gifts, personally and professionally, and led the Army of Northern Virginia’s cavalry to the all-but-complete satisfaction of his superiors. Stuart, insisted Robert E. Lee, “never brought me a piece of false information.” Being human, Stuart also under-performed. On occasion, he underestimated his opponents, took unnecessary risks with his habitually understrength command, failed to properly discipline and motivate his troopers, and was prone to errors both strategic and tactical. These flaws were evident during the Gettysburg Campaign, when his wayward route to the battlefield deprived Lee of the ability to safely negotiate his path toward a climactic confrontation with the Union Army of the Potomac. Because of his outsized wartime reputation—one embellished in the century-and-a-half since—most of Stuart’s errors have passed virtually unnoticed or, when addressed, have been excused or explained away in some fashion. Longacre’s study is based on hundreds of published works, archival sources, and newspapers. He probes not only Stuart’s military career but elements of his character and personality that invite investigation. Even the man’s fiercest partisans admitted that he was vain and inordinately sensitive to criticism, with a curious streak of immaturity—at times the hard-edged veteran, at other times a devotee of the pageantry of war, given to affectations such as ostrich-plumed hats, golden spurs, and the headquarters musicians who accompanied him on the march. Ever motivated by appeals to vanity, he curried the patronage of powerful men and responded readily to the attentions of attractive women even though by 1861, he was a long-married man. Personal flaws and limitations aside, Stuart was popular with his officers and men, beloved by members of his staff, and considered by the people of his state and region the beau ideal of Confederate soldiery. The distinction endures today. Longacre’s J. E. B. Stuart is an attempt to determine its validity.

Heritage at Risk: Improving Resilience and Awareness towards Preservation, Risk Mitigation and Governance Strategies

by Marcello Balzani

It is assumed that the impact of natural and man-made hazards on society in terms of damage is constantly increasing. In order to reduce the levels of potential disaster and to assess which policies and measures can generate positive impacts, it is necessary to make a careful comparison of experiences at an international scale in risk mitigation and management. The international scenario of calamitous events that still characterise all areas of the globe is deepened together with the experiences of the earthquakes and floods that have affected the Pianura Padana area and the central regions of Italy in the last ten years, included in the training project Academy "After the Damages". Following the results published in the first volume Built Heritage in Post-Disaster Scenarios, Heritage at Risk aims to continue the debate on recent innovations and advances in risk management to contribute to the definition of strategies and the implementation of increasingly effective tools in terms of risk mitigation. The volume provides insights into the dynamics and negative effects of natural and man-made hazards (i.e., earthquakes, fires, floods, droughts, and volcanic eruptions), including more updated approaches to deal with post-disaster phases. The book also offers tools to deal with possible international crisis scenarios and mitigate the social impact of vulnerabilities through risk reduction.Heritage at Risk is aimed at public administration managers, government agency representatives, international organizations, researchers, and professionals in architecture, engineering, and earth science. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Autism Awareness and Crime: Investigating the School-to-Prison Pipeline

by Neil Alexander-Passe

Autism Awareness and Crime explores Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the ‘school to prison pipeline’.This book takes the reader through a journey from understanding autism, how it manifests and how it is diagnosed. The author looks at how circumstances in schools including isolation, misunderstanding meltdowns, lack of autism awareness and training have criminalised autism, leading to suspensions, exclusions, and the use of restraint and seclusion. He draws on survey data to ascertain whether there is a link between a lack of autism awareness and provision in education settings for young people, and an increased likelihood of criminal behaviour later in life. The book looks at the type of offences that young people with autism are commonly arrested for, and the contributing autistic traits that are related to them which can be termed ‘risk factors’. Criminal offences including stalking, arson and cyber-dependent crimes are examined in detail, and this book also considers how individuals with ASD are treated by the criminal justice system. This volume is ideal for students, researchers and practitioners in the fields of forensic psychology, criminology, special educational needs, and social work.

Her book: Poems

by Éireann Lorsung

&“Exacting, and at the same time utterly magical." —ADA LIMÓNWith intelligence and crystalline clarity, a chorus of female voices speaks through the poems in Her book, Éireann Lorsung&’s luminous second collection.Full of youth, wonder, and imagination, Her book crosses distances and generations to celebrate the lives of women, their individual and shared experiences, and the bonds that bring them together. This is also a book about translation (of experience into art, of knowledge across time and space), conversation (with, for instance, work by the artist Kiki Smith), and friendship (especially those made during Lorsung&’s time in England). In these poems, the female body rises from a foundation of stars. Songbirds are cut from paper and stormy light. And letters arrive, and disappear, mysteries contained within.&“Part ecstatic recollection of the many ways places and objects leave their indelible marks upon our bodies and brains, and part timeless ode to the strange female beast that pounds inside of us all&” (Ada Limón), Her book is both an inspired work from Lorsung and, fundamentally, her book—poems belonging to all women.

The Crimean War (Images of War)

by Martin Mace John Grehan

The Crimean War was a conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the French Empire, British Empire, Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The war was part of a long-running contest between the major European powers for influence over territories of the declining Ottoman Empire. Most of the conflict took place on the Crimean Peninsula, but there were smaller campaigns in western Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Baltic Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the White Sea. The Crimean War is known for the logistical and tactical errors during the land campaign on both sides (the naval side saw a successful Allied campaign which eliminated most of the ships of the Russian Navy in the Black Sea). Nonetheless, it is sometimes considered to be one of the first modern wars as it introduced technical changes which affected the future course of warfare, including the first tactical use of railways and the electric telegraph. It is also famous for the work of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, who pioneered modern nursing practices while caring for wounded British soldiers. The war also led to the establishment of the Victoria Cross in 1856 (backdated to 1854), the British Army's first universal award for valor. The Crimean War was one of the first wars to be documented extensively in photographs. News correspondence reaching Britain from the Crimea was the first time the public were kept informed of the day-to-day realities of war. This unique collection of images will prove to be an invaluable resource for historians, students and all those interested in what was one of the most significant periods in British military history. Each picture will tell its own story, and will be fully captioned with historical detail.
