Lexicon Exploration in English and Spanish Learners (Educational Linguistics #67)
by Rosa María Jiménez CatalánThis book delves into psycholinguistic and cognitive aspects of lexical activation, availability, and production in English or Spanish as additional languages in classroom settings. Instead of focusing sociologically and pedagogically on lexical availability, this collective work adopts a cognitive approach. Ten studies, conducted by experienced researchers, employ a uniform methodology based on lexical availability tests in classroom contexts. Notably, each study permits learners to produce as many responses as possible within two minutes, revealing common associations and network patterns in lexical production. The book is innovative not only in providing cognitive data from Spanish learners of English, but also from Greek, Polish, and North American learners of Spanish, expanding the scope beyond traditional research on word associations. While acknowledging the pioneering work in word associations among French and English learners, this book distinguishes itself by using lexical availability tests to explore word associations and networks in the mental lexicon of English or Spanish learners in classroom contexts. Notably, it offers lexical data from children and adolescents learning English in primary or secondary schools, as well as Spanish learners in high school and university settings, filling a gap in research on younger learners and languages other than English. The book addresses the need for empirical data on the mental lexicon of English or Spanish learners, particularly in primary or secondary classrooms, a scarcely investigated educational context.

The Frisch-Peierls Memorandum: The Founding Document of the Nuclear Age (SpringerBriefs in History of Science and Technology)
by Bruce Cameron ReedThis book analyzes a little-known but highly significant document that played a key role in early nuclear history: the Frisch-Peierls memorandum of March 1940. Prepared by Otto Frisch and Rudolf Peierls, refugee European physicists then at the University of Birmingham, this 10-page document described the physics behind the possibility of creating nuclear weapons utilizing a chain reaction with uranium-235, as well as the associated military, strategic, and ethical implications of such weapons. This remarkable manuscript made its way to the UK government's Committee on the Scientific Survey of Air Warfare, initiating the wartime British nuclear program. In 1943, the British effort merged with the US Manhattan Project; a number of native and naturalized British scientists including Frisch and Peierls, participated in the work that culminated with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This book examines the background to the memorandum, gives biographical sketches of Frisch and Peierls, describes how the memorandum came to be prepared, offers a detailed analysis of its physics content, outlines contemporary parallel events in the American nuclear program, and surveys the influence of the memorandum on the British and US wartime nuclear projects.
Elements of Hypersonic Airbreather Design and Development
by Ernst Heinrich Hirschel Werner Staudacher Mirko Hornung Daniel KlicheThis book sketches key design, development, and engineering issues. To think up an airbreathing hypersonic aircraft is one thing; to design, develop, and produce it is another one. Airframe-propulsion integration plays a central role, with six integration types identified. Most demanding is that of a large aircraft with both lift and propulsion located at its lower side—an approach exemplified early by the US National Aerospace Plane. Topics treated are the flight environment, design sensitivities, fuel considerations, aerothermodynamics, scramjet propulsion, airframe-propulsion integration, structural and materials issues, and aerothermoelasticity. Persistent challenges include laminar-turbulent transition and joint modelling. Capabilities and shortcomings of experimental, computational, and in-flight simulation are considered. The second wave of mathematization—culminating in the concept of the virtual product—has fundamentally transformed flight vehicle design, enabling integrated, high-fidelity simulation across disciplines. In this book, students, design engineers, and technical managers will find ample insight and practical knowledge regarding hypersonic airbreather design.

This machine-generated volume, with chapter introductions by the human expert, of summaries of the existing studies furthers our understanding of the heuristic and metaheuristic optimization methods for structural engineering domain problems. It brings out nature inspired metaheuristic optimization methods such as Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, Ant Colony Optimization, Cohort Intelligence, Firefly Algorithm, Differential Evolution, Bee Colony, Grey Wolf Optimizer, League Championship Algorithm, Harmony Search Algorithm, Water Cycle Algorithm, Neural Network Algorithm, and its different variations that have been widely used to solve structural engineering problems. This book will be helpful for academicians and researchers in many kinds such as surveys of nature inspired optimization algorithms for structural optimization, its applicability for solving single objective and multi-objective structural engineering problems, constraint handling, solution quality, challenges, opportunities, key features, and limitations.Questions and related keywords were prepared for the machine to query, discover, collate and structure by Artificial Intelligence (AI) clustering. The AI-based approach seemed especially suitable to provide an innovative perspective as the topics are indeed both complex, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary. Springer Nature has published much on these topics in its journals over the years, so the challenge was for the machine to identify the most relevant content and present it in a structured way that the reader would find useful. The automatically generated literature summaries in this book are intended as a springboard to further discoverability. They are particularly useful to readers with limited time, looking to learn more about the subject quickly and especially if they are new to the topics. Springer Nature seeks to support anyone who needs a fast and effective start in their content discovery journey, from the undergraduate student exploring interdisciplinary content to Master- or PhD-thesis developing research questions, to the practitioner seeking support materials, this book can serve as an inspiration, to name a few examples. It is important to us as a publisher to make advances in technology easily accessible to our authors and find new ways of AI-based author services that allow human-machine interaction to generate readable, usable, collated, research content.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to KIIT Horizons, Volume 1: Exploring Artificial Intelligence Across Disciplines (Accounting, Finance, Sustainability, Governance & Fraud: Theory and Application)
by Kıymet Tunca Çalıyurt Pratiti NayakThis book explores the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across different disciplines. As AI applications continue to progress, serious concerns arise about effectively protecting the copyright of items they produce. Each country views AI as an author while maintaining rights differently, resulting in the compelling necessity for an international dialogue on legal standards. The present copyright framework does not provide sufficient solutions for AI authorship intricacies and raises doubts about classic notions of invention and source. The distinctions show an increasing demand for a global legal system that can address the unique characteristics of AI-generated content. Investigating legal policies for AI-created works underscores the critical demand for a copyright approach that accounts for human involvement. Recognizing the actual owner and the original creator is complicated when AI operates with substantial control. Present statutes fail to clarify the complexities linked to human artistic contributions. The rationale behind developing a single system is based on valuing AI-produced material as a unique category of intellectual property. As AI becomes more significant in creative fields, legal dialogues must also be similarly enhanced. The approaches considered in the book strive to build improved regulations that represent the progress in AI technology and the basic concepts of copyright. The book goes on to propose a consistent policy model to confront AI obstacles related to intellectual property and would be a valuable read for policy makers and AI enthusiasts alike.

Biomedical Science and Clinical Foundations: A Case-Based Approach
by Cynthia A. StandleyThis book teaches medical students basic science and clinical concepts utilizing over 30 cases that cover all major organ systems. Case-based learning has become a core way to teach the application of foundational material in the basic and clinical sciences in the pre-clerkship years. Medical schools&’ curriculums tend to be traditional, organ systems-based, or problem-based. There are many discipline-based textbooks for students to use in a traditional approach to medical education. For the organ systems-based approach, there are many books dedicated to each organ system, where clinical relevance is tied in with basic science concepts. In a problem-based curriculum, students use clinical cases to stimulate inquiry, knowledge application, and critical thinking. While there are many books available for faculty to learn how to teach in a problem-based approach, there is a paucity of textbooks that provide the breadth and depth of clinical cases integrated with basic medical sciences. This book serves to fill that gap. Written when the authors were fourth year medical students and edited by an experienced educator, each case is designed to present the reader with the information they need to know in a direct and accessible format. Cases are organized by organ system. Each case includes learning objectives (clinical and basic science), patient history, detailed physical exam, labs, imaging, test results, treatment, outcomes, and sample board-style exam questions. In addition, each case has an additional objective to approach topics such as ethics, social determinants of health, behavioral health, healthcare transformation, and public health. This is an ideal resource for first- and second-year medical students to learn these foundational concepts and prepare for USMLE Step 1 and 2 board examinations.
