The Himalaya Dilemma: Navigating Risk, Vulnerability, and Resilience in Geohazard-Prone Regions (Springer Natural Hazards)
by Sandipan GhoshThe Himalaya Dilemma: Navigating Risk, Vulnerability, and Resilience in Geohazard-Prone Regions is a collaborative effort to explore and understand the multiple dangers the Himalayas face, including landslides, earthquakes, glacial lake outburst floods, terrain instability, anthropogenic landscape alterations, and ecosystem fragility. Often called the "Roof of the World" and the "Third Pole," the Himalayas are among Earth's most breathtaking yet geologically active mountain ranges. While these majestic peaks inspire awe, they also conceal a complex interplay of geological risks, environmental challenges, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. At the heart of the volume lies the theme The Himalaya at Risk, emphasizing the urgent need to bridge the gap between hazard management, community action, policy development, and scientific research. Integrating insights from geology, geomorphology, geography, environmental science, disaster management, and sustainable development, the book offers a comprehensive overview of the region's risk environment. The Himalaya Dilemma is intended for a diverse readership, including academics and researchers in the fields of geology, environmental science, disaster risk management, and climate studies, policymakers and development practitioners involved in building disaster resilience and promoting sustainable development in mountain regions, as well as students seeking a deeper understanding of Himalayan geohazards and the broader consequences of environmental change.

Hybrid Lives of Teaching Artists in Dance and Theatre Arts
by Mary KahlichThe role of the hybrid artist-educator in schools and communities over the past fifty years has evolved significantly. Although education reform and political pressures during the last five decades have frequently interrupted steady and sustained arts education programming in the United States-especially in theatre and dance-the teaching artist today performs an important role in numerous educational contexts.

Over the past fifteen years, the work of teaching artists has received growing professional attention and research: the Association of Teaching Artists (ATA) was founded in 1998 to support, advocate for, strengthen and serve the teaching artist profession. This volume, focused on teaching artists in dance and theatre disciplines, expands this developing area of inquiry and reveals topographies for teaching in and through these arts disciplines that have, until this text, been examined separately.

Directed toward the last decade's growth and professionalization, the book asks: where and how is teaching artistry in dance and theatre happening? What is guiding, supporting, or complicating the work of teaching artists in dance and theatre arts today? What training and preparation do teaching artists receive? How do teaching artists effectively address the cultural diversity of the communities they serve? What are the political and economic influences that impact the work and delivery of teaching artistry? What has been learned on a large scale about the hybrid lives and work of teaching artists in dance and theatre arts? In sum, what is the status of the teaching artist today?

This book examines pedagogical, artistic, and professional issues for two performing arts disciplines by using the voices and experiences of each form's practitioners and those who prepare them.

The Chilean Body Politic: Gender and Political Philosophy in the Early Chilean Working Class
by Joaquín Montalva ArmanetThis monograph explores how Chilean urban workers translated nineteenth-century European political philosophy according to their conditions, locality, and colonial history. The research is grounded on a systematic analysis of local archival material—primarily, newspapers aimed at the working class from 1870 to the 1920s—from a theoretical perspective informed by contemporary feminist critiques and inspired by Jacques Derrida&’s deconstruction. This provides a new understanding of late-nineteenth-century Chilean popular culture which shows that the origin of capitalism was commonly interpreted as a loss of virility on the part of Chilean men, who emerged into a modern European like city as degenerative people dispossessed of their traditional &“dominion&” over Chilean women, land, and culture. The book proposes that the experience of early industrial modernity was posited by Chilean men as equivalent to the loss of an essential masculinity rooted in an economy of patriarchal sexual difference. Consequently, it also reveals that the notion of &“revolution&” was translated in Chilean culture as the return of an ideal male subject who would re-establish the &“natural&” distribution of the sexes displaced by a foreign form of capitalist modernity. This research shows the centrality of questions of gender to working-class political thought and criticizes the points of complicity between politics, philosophy, and patriarchy in the Chilean political tradition. It will appeal to students and researchers in political theory, gender studies, feminism, and Latin American studies.
Dynamics of Power in Dutch Integration Politics: From Accommodation to Confrontation (Solidarity and Identity)
by Justus UitermarkIntegration politics in the Netherlands has changed dramatically between 1990 and 2005. Whereas ethnic and religious differences were hitherto pacified through accommodation, a new and increasingly powerful current in Dutch politics problematized the presence of minorities. This development represents a challenge to sociologists and political scientists: how to map and explain drastic changes? Arguing that extant approaches are better at explaining continuity than change, this book develops a relational discourse analysis to understand dynamic power relations in national as well as local politics.

Wake is no longer alone in this dangerous world. His wife Linda, hiding in a pro-Union camp on Useppa Island, gives him a future to look forward to as the war nears its end. Fluff: The Sticky Sweet Story of an American Icon
by Mimi GraneyAt the turn of the twentieth century, Boston was a booming candy town. Of all the tantalizing treats, nothing has stuck around like Marshmallow Fluff. Since that time, the small, family-run company Durkee-Mower has churned out a century of Fluff with the secretive air of Willy Wonka. Little has been made of this extraordinary legacy—until now.To author Mimi Graney, Fluff is more than a retro ingredient. It is a story about the merits and pitfalls of adaptation and innovation. Graney deftly brings the factory floor alive, weaving a fascinating narrative about New England's forgotten candy industry, changing social roles for women, the advent of commercial radio and modern advertising, and the supermarket revolution. Fluff has survived two world wars, corporate attacks, nutrition battles, and the rise and fall of manufacturing towns. The world has changed around it, yet this icon remains the same.
Remember This Titan: The Bill Yoast Story: Lessons Learned from a Celebrated Coach's Journey As Told to Steve Sullivan
by Steve SullivanBill Yoast is the real-life hero of Remember the Titans, the inspirational hit movie that chronicled the struggles of black and white high school football athletes to create a championship season in racially charged Alexandria, Virginia, in 1972. Will Patton played Yoast's role and Denzel Washington played the role of Head Coach Herman Boone. Uniting in a common effort, Yoast and Boone led T.C. Williams High School to an undefeated season, and in the process brought the school and polarized community together. The real-life Yoast is even more compelling than his film version. At one time, the former World War II veteran considered going into the ministry. Fortunately, for the hundreds of young men and women whose lives he helped mold, he found his calling in coaching. To him, the title "coach" always meant more than wins and losses; coaching was a vehicle through which he could help young people. One of Yoast's greatest victories came with Gerry Bertier, his star lineman whose tragic auto accident and resulting paralysis was seen in Remember the Titans. What the film did not include was the fact that, for years after the accident, Yoast worked with Bertier, coaching him to win gold medals in shotput and discus at the Wheel Chair Olympics.

by Steve DifillippoWhen&’s the last time you picked up a business book that was so engaging you couldn&’t put it down? Steve Difillippo was only 24 when he opened his first Davio&’s restaurant. Since then, he&’s wowed Julia Child with his pomodoro, overlooked some triple-X rated shenanigans at Table 7, taken on American Express, gotten himself into Time and Newsweek (for taking on American Express), cooked a rabbit for Stevie Ray Vaughn, inadvertently gotten a guest divorced, whipped up some tasty eats at the Super Bowl--and that&’s just the beginning. The money hasn&’t been bad, either: that first restaurant is now the hub of a rapidly growing $50 million restaurant brand group and a $10 million Davio&’s brand food line. With guests constantly asking how he did it, Steve has written the ultimate guide to starting a restaurant, running a successful business, enjoying food, and living life. The 5.9 million restaurant workers who say they want to open their own restaurant will go nuts over this book, but so will anybody who loves food and the restaurant world--heck, anybody who wants to make money and have a blast doing it. As a special bonus, Steve includes twelve classic Davio&’s recipes.
Breaking the Argument Cycle: How to Stop Fighting Without Therapy
by Sharon RivkinRevealing where the real conflict lies in a relationship—and resolving it* Breaking the Argument Cycle is a book for all those who&’ve ever found themselves arguing with their significant other, again and again, about money, sex, or even a seemingly trivial topic—when, at its core, the conflict is about something completely different. Here, she shows how anyone can use the tools of therapy to break the cycle of destructive fighting—namely, by resolving the core issues of early arguments, which have their roots in childhood and get repeated over time. Presenting real-life stories and easy exercises, Rivkin sets forth a simple, three-step process—Peel, Reveal, Heal—to empower couples to identify and then resolve their core issues themselves, shedding light on what they&’re really arguing about. This is then followed up with healing exercises. By thus breaking the argument cycle, confusion and chaos turn into clarity and healing—and everyone can learn how and why they get hooked into an argument, how to unhook, and how to develop lasting tools to turn conflict into intimacy . . . even after years of fighting.
