The Routledge Handbook of the Global 1980s

by Jonathan Davis

The 1980s was a decade of enormous global change. Upheaval from the top of governments to the bottom of societies saw a new world order begin to emerge. A new form of capitalism redefined global economics on both the right and left as market forces were unleashed. The ideological conflict of the previous four decades petered out as superpower relations improved. A more interconnected world introduced new consumer products and forms of popular culture to societies across the globe. And protest movements saw new battles fought and new alliances forged in an increasingly interdependent world. The Routledge Handbook of the Global 1980s brings together specialists from across the world to examine how the decade was shaped by these changes to politics, economics, culture, societies, and protest movements. The Handbook is divided into five parts focusing on the global environment, globalisation and neoliberalism, politics and society, culture and society, and the closing stages of the global Cold War.By taking an international approach to the history of the 1980s, this book offers a wide-ranging and important new perspective of this hugely transformative decade. It will appeal to students and scholars alike as well as all those interested in the political, social, economic, and cultural shifts of the 1980s.

Frame Analysis, Critical Theory, and English Language Teaching

by Robert J. Lowe

In this book, Robert J. Lowe introduces frame analysis, a qualitative research approach grounded in the critical theory of the early Frankfurt School and framing in the social sciences. Lowe sets out the principles of the frame analysis approach and provides a guide to conducting this kind of research in practice.Focused on identifying and challenging ideology through immanent critique, Lowe presents a methodological guide and research report. He begins by explaining early critical theory and the frame analysis approach, followed by a detailed example of its application. This example illustrates the key stages: identifying participants' ideological presuppositions through their “master framing,” questioning the internal logic of this framing, and presenting contradictions to participants. Finally, the researcher observes reactions and documents emerging counter-framing, marking the first signs of resistance to dominant ideology.By applying this approach to issues in English language teaching, the book questions some of the ways in which the rhetoric of pluralism and diversity around English as an international language may stand at odds with the realities of a world in which some varieties of the language have more prestige than others. Through the frame analysis approach, the author suggests that researchers can play a role in empowering language learners and users to advocate for a world in which they can take true ownership of the language. Key reading for all qualitative researchers and advanced students in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, ELT/TESOL and linguistic anthropology.

We’re Number One!?: America’s Uncertain Standing in the World

by Dennis W. Johnson

We’re Number One!?: America’s Uncertain Standing in the World compares the domestic policies of the United States to other countries across a wide variety of social, political, and economic metrics. This book demonstrates conclusively that despite America’s wealth, its strong economy, its military might, and its soft power dominance, we have far to go in comparison with other democratic, industrialized nations. We may think we’re Number One, but in too many key areas—health care, education, combating poverty, protecting the family, and so forth—we fall embarrassingly short. The shock to most readers won’t be on one or more specific policy shortcomings, but on the cumulative rankings, chapter after chapter, showing where the United States has come up short. This book presents the facts and leaves to policymakers the challenge: how do we fix our broken health care system, how do we mitigate climate disasters, or how do we rein in gun violence. One answer is to look at the successful policies created in other countries.A refreshingly frank and thorough analysis of the United States’ relative position in the world, this book will appeal to students, scholars, and practitioners of comparative politics, comparative sociology, public policy, social justice, and American government.

Travel and Wonder in the Early Modern World: Representations, Descriptions and Uses of the Unfamiliar

by Jaska Kainulainen

This collection of chapters explores wonder in the context of early modern travel and travel writing, offering multifaceted and novel interpretations of the problematic relationship between a traveller and their unfamiliar environment through various geographical, chronological and thematic lenses.Exploring representations, descriptions and uses of the unfamiliar, the contributors discuss and elucidate rhetorical, epistemological, religious, colonial, materialistic and emotional aspects of wonder in the early modern world. They study European travellers and their texts, as well as descriptions of wonder within the Muslim world and reactions to the unfamiliar reported by Muslim travellers in Europe. The collection ranges from travellers’ descriptions of wonder to an analysis of wonders that have travelled. With its focus on “wonder” in the context of early modern travel, this volume fills a significant gap in research, shedding new light on the history of intercultural encounters and on the processes of learning about the world and our place in it.The book is aimed at both academic and non-academic readers, for experts who study early modern history and travel writing, and for lay readers who are curious about the history of travel and about past conceptions of the world and foreign cultures.

Semifiktionen: Hybrides Erzählen im digitalen Zeitalter (Literatur und Öffentlichkeit / Literature and the Public Sphere)

by Sabine Friedrich

by Antonia Nikolopoulou

Traditional Livestock Production: Adaptation to Organic Production Systems

by Carlos Palacios Riocerezo Manuel Gonzalez Ronquillo

This book provides a comprehensive overview of various aspects of sustainable agriculture, such as organic production systems focused on dairy farming of both cattle and sheep, indigenous poultry production, the use of insects in animal feed as a sustainable alternative, the production of lambs in organic grazing systems and the carbon footprint of organic livestock. It also addresses regulatory frameworks, challenges, opportunities and the importance of sustainability in agriculture, understanding why the animal products we consume should come from organic and not industrial sources. In recent years, there has been an increase in the consumption of organic food in the world led by the United States, Germany and France, being a necessity to seek food free of hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and synthetic growth promoters. Likewise, consumers are paying more and more attention to the treatment of farm animals, that they are free grazing, that the food they receive does not compete with human food (e.g. cereal grains). The demand of these consumers concerned about the origin of the food they buy, promoting more sustainable systems, with healthier food without added substances in their production, respectful of the environment and with the certainty that the animals raised do so with the greatest guarantees of animal welfare, pushes producers to become certified in certified organic production. However, the traditional productions of small producers, backyard economies, generally meet almost all the peculiarities necessary to be certified in organic production and that is why this editorial proposal combines the two production systems that help small producers to continue with the traditional production system, dignifying their work and obtaining better economic returns. This book is focused with an informative language to the future readers of this book, who can be farmers of traditional production systems, technicians who work with them and who facilitate improvements in their yields favoring better selling prices of their products, researchers in the sector and anyone interested in this type of emerging productions. Those who are interested in understanding how organic livestock farming works, what are the benefits of producing organic animal food, whether milk and its derivatives, as well as poultry meat and eggs, and feeding strategies that allow to be more sustainable with the environment, from extensive grazing and production of organic lamb meat, to the use of new alternative foods (i.e. insects) in organic food, understanding the legislation and regulations for its use.

The Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Urban Transport (Routledge International Handbooks)

by Lucy Budd Stephen Ison Maria Attard

The Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Urban Transport offers a state‑of‑the‑art, comprehensive overview of sustainable transportation modes, impacts, technologies and policy. Over time, the economic benefits of transport have been overshadowed by negative externalities on the environment, public health and communities. Today, transport is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and, with the growth in the number and size of cities, urban transport will be a critical infrastructure to develop sustainably.Sustainable urban transport poses a key topic of debate for politicians, the public and transport providers worldwide, as legacy vehicle technologies, power sources, infrastructure and habitual human travel behaviours render the decarbonisation of local and global transport systems inherently challenging. Featuring contributions from world‑leading, international scholars, the chapters examine concepts, issues and ideas across three topic areas that reflect the increasingly diverse nature of current research and thinking in sustainable urban transport: urban transport sectors; challenges, issues and impacts; and technical, social and economic solutions. Each chapter provides an overview of current knowledge, identifies issues, discusses the relevant debates in sustainable urban transport and seeks to put forward a future research agenda in the field. This Handbook offers a single repository on the current state of knowledge, written from a practical perspective, utilising theory that is applied and developed using real‑world examples. The Handbook is an essential reference for researchers, academics and students working in all areas of sustainable transportation, from policy and planning to technology, in addition to industry practitioners looking to develop their professional knowledge.

Deconstructing the Role of Generations in Social Movements: Time, Events, and Legacies (The Mobilization Series on Social Movements, Protest, and Culture)

by Maria Grasso Mark Turner Jan Andre Lee Ludvigsen

Although questions of how a social group’s shared experiences growing up in particular historical and social contexts shapes their identities, including their political identities, have engaged sociologists of family, youth, citizenship, culture, and political change, few books have so far examined the specific role of generations and generational consciousness in social movement activism. As such, this is the first book to focus exclusively on issues of temporality, events, and generational legacies in social movements. In demonstrating how generational consciousness, and specific frames, narratives, and repertoires of contention are shaped by, and respond to, historical and contemporary meanings of major events and social transformations in different locations, new important questions on race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and citizenship are revealed at new, emerging critical junctures in the twenty-first century,With its high-quality chapters and transnational scope, this book will capture several key trends in the role of generations in social movements and explores topics including contemporary feminism, family, and intergenerational transmission, generationality and political change, rituals and social change, and Black politics and US democracy. This is an invaluable resource for students and academics with an interest in sociology, political science, and the study of social movements and social change, and for policymakers and readers with a general interest in intergenerational conflict and the challenges of engaging new youth generations in political and democratic structures and processes.

A New Index for Public Space: After Distancing

by Tali Hatuka Andrea Mubi Brighenti

A New Index for Public Space: After Distancing offers readers a re-evaluation of the notion of publicness as a lens to unpack the complexity of urban space. A "new index" is proposed to reconstitute the promises and the predicaments of public space to better prepare for the contemporary challenges of post-pandemic, conflict-ridden society. Part I provides a theoretical introduction to the idea of public space and publicness, laying out the book’s rationale; Part II offers a new index of terms, including affects, alignments, atmosphere, conviviality, diagrams, documenting, flow, and more; and Part III applies the proposed lexicon with a "random walk" approach, inviting the reader to use the lens of nonlinear evolutionary dynamics as a means for envisioning the future of publicness. This book is the outcome of a conversation across disciplines – specifically, urban design and social theory – revolving around the recognition that public space is inherently fragile, messy, conflicted, and evolving. This book will be of interest to urban planners, architects, and urban designers, as well as human geographers, sociologists, political theorists, and those working in community development.
