The Signals Are Talking: Why Today's Fringe Is Tomorrow's Mainstream
by Amy WebbAmy Webb is a noted futurist who combines curiosity, skepticism, colorful storytelling, and deeply reported, real-world analysis in this essential book for understanding the future. The Signals Are Talking reveals a systemic way of evaluating new ideas bubbling up on the horizon-distinguishing what is a real trend from the merely trendy. This book helps us hear which signals are talking sense, and which are simply nonsense, so that we might know today what developments-especially those seemingly random ideas at the fringe as they converge and begin to move toward the mainstream-that have long-term consequence for tomorrow. With the methodology developed in The Signals Are Talking, we learn how to think like a futurist and answer vitally important questions: How will a technology-like artificial intelligence, machine learning, self-driving cars, biohacking, bots, and the Internet of Things-affect us personally? How will it impact our businesses and workplaces? How will it eventually change the way we live, work, play, and think-and how should we prepare for it now? Most importantly, Webb persuasively shows that the future isn't something that happens to us passively. Instead, she allows us to see ahead so that we may forecast what's to come-challenging us to create our own preferred futures.

The Billionaire Who Wasn't: How Chuck Feeney Secretly Made and Gave Away a Fortune
by Conor O'CleryThe astonishing life of the modest New Jersey businessman who anonymously gave away 10 billion dollars and inspired the "giving while living" movement In this bestselling book, Conor O'Clery reveals the inspiring life story of Chuck Feeney, known as the "James Bond of philanthropy." Feeney was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to a blue-collar Irish-American family during the Depression. After service in the Korean War, he made a fortune as founder of Duty Free Shoppers, the world's largest duty-free retail chain. By 1988, he was hailed by Forbes Magazine as the twenty-fourth richest American alive. But secretly Feeney had already transferred all his wealth to his foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies. Only in 1997 when he sold his duty free interests, was he "outed" as one of the greatest and most mysterious American philanthropists in modern times, who had anonymously funded hospitals and universities from San Francisco to Limerick to New York to Brisbane. His example convinced Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to give away their fortunes during their lifetime, known as the giving pledge.
The Doors You Can Open: A New Way to Network, Build Trust, and Use Your Influence to Create a More Inclusive Workplace
by Rosalind Chow&“Chow revolutionizes our understanding of how careers advance&” (Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times best-selling author of Drive), taking readers on a transformative journey beyond the standard model of mentorship to embracing sponsorship. The way we currently network and engage in mentorship isn&’t working. Given the ever-evolving nature of the workplace, transactional networking and company-enforced mentorship programs simply don&’t help make our professional relationships more authentic or our workplaces more equitable. What we need instead is sponsorship. What&’s the difference between mentorship and sponsorship? Mentorship involves helping a mentee change their behavior, while sponsorship involves changing how other people see a protégé. Sponsorship is as important, if not more so, than mentorship in determining who gets ahead, making it a more effective way to promote social equality and inclusion in the workplace. In The Doors You Can Open, organizational expert Rosalind Chow shows readers that they likely already engage in sponsorship in their personal and professional networks—and how they can channel those skills to build more authentic professional relationships. We all have more agency and deeper networks to act as sponsors than we might think, and sponsoring others can lead to mutually beneficial lifelong connections rather than merely transactional interactions. Given the ever-evolving nature of the workplace, intentional and equitable sponsorship is more important now than ever for overturning traditional social hierarchies. Based on decades of original research, The Doors You Can Open makes a bold case for completely changing the way we network. Reading it will change how we see and use our relationships in the service of creating stronger workplaces for all.

German Wartime Memory, American Exceptionalism, and Post-Cold War Blockbuster Cinema (Popular Culture and World Politics)
by Robert PirroThis book excavates the diverse and mostly unnoticed political meanings made available to American and German audiences by the blockbuster films helmed by transplanted West German directors Roland Emmerich and Wolfgang Petersen.Through formal film analysis, broad consideration of American and German film criticism, and reflection on relevant political developments of the post-Cold War era, the book reveals how traces of Germany’s experience of dictatorship and wartime destruction find inadvertent cinematic expression in ways that helped American and German moviegoers find orientation in the changed political and cultural landscape of a newly globalized world. To complement and deepen the analysis of the Hollywood output of Emmerich and Petersen, the book juxtaposes the creative product of these transplanted directors to examples of a converse cinematic phenomenon considered under the label, American Babelsberg, which encompasses World War Two-themed films shot by American directors in Germany utilizing the production facilities at Babelsberg. Focus here is placed particularly on two high-profile cinematic releases of the aughts, Valkyrie (2008), and Inglourious Basterds (2009). The magnetic attraction to, or nettlesome burden of, World War Two memories on these directors of American Babelsberg and German Hollywood is explained in this book by the entwined histories of Germans and Americans, the different challenges of national self-definition and renewal they faced in the post-Cold War world, and their long-standing and ongoing transatlantic discourse of political ideas and cultural ideals. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of film studies, politics, popular culture, and contemporary history.

Diaspora and Soft Power: Influence of Indian American Elites in US Foreign Policy (Migration, Diasporas and Citizenship)
by Eva LorengThis book, based on in-depth field interviews, takes a fresh look at the phenomenon of diaspora communities exercising &‘soft power&’ in the context of the Indian American diaspora in the US. By using an interdisciplinary approach, it marks a departure from the traditional study that measures the effectiveness of soft power sources by their popularity. Instead, it acknowledges the matrix of socio-economic and political factors, both internationally and domestically, which contribute towards the evolution of diaspora as a source of soft power. It focuses on how demography, policies and structural changes led to the evolution of an Indian American networking/strategic elite class. Exploring their participation in political fundraising and subsequent penetration into US foreign policymaking circles, this book analyses the foreign policy-related advocacy campaigns carried out by them and contributes to diaspora studies, foreign policy, international relations and political science.
The Palgrave Handbook on the Problem of Animal Suffering in the Philosophy of Religion (The Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Series)
by B. Kyle KeltzAtheists argue that animal pain, disease, suffering, and death cause a problem for theism because they believe that an all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-good God would not use millions of years of animal suffering just to make a world suitable for humans. Animal suffering was not a concern for theism through the medieval period, but it has been increasingly discussed in philosophy of religion since modern times, and there is especially a large and growing amount of literature on this subject that has been published in the last few decades. This handbook serves as a guide for those interested in the literature on the problem by bringing together experts in the philosophy of religion, theology, environmental ethics, and the philosophy of animal minds. It not only presents major formulations of the problem of animal suffering and major theodicies, but it also discusses metaethical issues regarding animal suffering, the question of animal consciousness and self-awareness and their implications for animal suffering, and what implications available theodicies might have for animal ethics.
Understanding the Current Global Socio-economic and Ecological Crises: In Search of an Alternative Integrated System
by V. Ratna Reddy Bhagirath BeheraWhy has global economic growth failed to deliver equity, sustainability, and well-being for all? Despite decades of growth-centric and free-market policies, poverty and inequality persist, and the unchecked exploitation of natural resources threatens the planet&’s future. This thought-provoking book critically examines the limitations of current economic models and highlights how growth has often been achieved at the cost of environmental and social health. Drawing from ancient Indian philosophical traditions, historical and cultural practices—while steering clear of religious dogma—the authors challenge the modern obsession with profit maximization, consumerism, and self-interest. They advocate for a behavioral and ethical transformation in economic thinking: one rooted in community, sustainability, and intergenerational equity. This work is the product of years of dialogue with scholars, thinkers, and practitioners, and offers a powerful alternative vision: an economy that not only thrives but also uplifts all.
