The European Media in the Platform Era: Realities and Tendencies (Springer Studies in Media and Political Communication)
by Stylianos Papathanassopoulos Andrea MiconiThis book examines the significant changes reshaping the European media landscape in the context of rapid technological advancements, political shifts, and economic pressures. It sheds light on the economic, political, and structural forces behind these transformations, focusing particularly on the impact of platformisation, media convergence, and the emergence of new players on media production, distribution, and consumption. At the same time, the book analyses how platform dominance is reshaping European media ownership by fostering mergers and collaborations, while also raising concerns about media concentration. Against this backdrop, it also considers the evolving role of public broadcasters, as governments and policymakers grapple with the challenge of regulating new media realities while maintaining diversity and pluralism. It also discusses the implications of the trends for European identity and the European public sphere, particularly the tension between a top-down, institutional, and regulatory approach to Europeanisation. Providing a detailed overview of the trends and shifts shaping the future of European media, the book offers key insights into the dynamics and challenges of the contemporary media environment. It will appeal to students, researchers, and media professionals interested in media studies, European studies, international communication, and public policy. Its insightful analysis and empirical grounding enable readers to gain a better understanding of the ongoing transformations in the European media sector and the future direction of the media in the digital platform era.
The European Banking Regulation Handbook, Volume II: Substantive Aspects of European Banking Law and Regulation
by Christos V. GortsosIn two volumes, this handbook covers in a comprehensive, internally balanced, systematic and detailed way the field of European Union (EU) banking law and regulation. The present Volume II builds on Volume I, which offered a brief introduction to the theory of banking regulation, a thorough analysis of international financial standards, as well as a brief presentation of the gradual evolution and the sources of EU banking law, and a precise analysis of the law-making process and the institutional aspects governing this branch of EU economic law. Volume II contains a detailed analysis of the substantive aspects of EU banking law, starting with the EU rules governing the authorisation, prudential regulation and supervision of credit institutions (Part I), and then moving to those governing crisis prevention and crisis management in the EU banking system, including (but not confined to) the resolution of credit institutions (Part II). Of significant value is the well-established blend between the EU law in force and its interpretation by EU Courts in their numerous judgments.
The History of Town Planning in a Dependent State: Greece in the 19th Century
by Louis C. WassenhovenThis book is based on research carried out by the author in Greece, addressed initially to Greek readers, mainly researchers of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, National Technical University of Athens, where he served for a long time as professor. However, a great deal of the research has a definite international interest and its results form the backbone of his new undertaking in English. Although some of the observations included in the initial project are reproduced here, the gist of the author&’s arguments dwells on issues which are not of a narrow national interest. This book interests students and historians of town planning, whose area of reference is not only Europe, but also the countries which have been through a state of dependence and external domination, and had to import foreign planning ideas and concepts. The author tries to embrace a broad spectrum of urban planning ideas, developments and influences which dominated the 19th century planning practice of a country which had just achieved political independence, but was still practically a protectorate of the great powers of the time, often referred to as the Protecting Powers (Great Britain, France and Russia). Every aspect of domestic policies and developments was directly dictated or indirectly influenced by the choices, policies, laws and actions of these external forces. It was also influenced by the advice and expert opinions of foreigners or even of Greeks, whose mode of conceptualizing the problems of the dependent country had been deeply affected by their life or education in foreign lands. Looking at this state of affairs more than two centuries after the 1821 Greek War of Independence demands full awareness of these conditions.
Anomalous Gas Volcanism in the Black Sea
by Evgeny Shnyukov Valentina Yanko Vladimir KobolevIn the Black Sea, an unprecedented intensity of gas discharge of the seabed in the form of jet emissions (gas seeps, torches, flares) and fountains of gas emissions from mud volcanoes have been established, which are described in detail in the monograph. However, the main attention is paid to anomalous single-stage methane emissions as a result of the famous Yalta earthquakes of 1927, accompanied by amazing and mysterious fiery phenomena. An analysis of the available geological and geophysical materials indicates that the fire phenomena were caused by massive methane emissions as a result of a powerful mantle gas-fluid flow into decompaction zones of the crystalline basement along tectonic faults of various scales within the Odessa-Sinop and Circum-Black Sea fault zones. Earthquakes served as a trigger for the activation of tectonic disturbances in the near-bottom sedimentary horizons for the migration of focused deep gas-fluid flows. The deep structure of the source zones and the nature of the seismic process are analyzed, the nature of the manifestations of fire phenomena is assessed. The enormous volumes of gas emissions are noted – millions of cubic meters of methane, which are proposed as a kind of gas plume, the nature of which is associated with zones of deep faults in the upper mantle. Using the geological and geophysical materials obtained in recent years, the authors significantly refined the structural-tectonic construction and localization of gas-mud activity in the Black Sea water area. All these new materials, along with an analysis of the available data on the seismicity of the Crimean region, open up the possibility of explaining the fiery phenomena that were observed during the Yalta earthquakes of 1927 and facilitate the interpretation and understanding of their nature.

Whistleblowing Policy and Practice, Volume II: External Aspects
by Arron Phillips Meghan Van PortflietOrganizations are increasingly under pressure from policymakers to adopt procedures to handle disclosures in a more transparent and effective way, yet, we continue to see whistleblowers speak up and suffer for doing so. Why does this happen? This two-volume work examines the different perspectives on who is responsible for receiving and acting on whistleblowing disclosures, implementing processes and procedures, and even deciding who can be defined as a whistleblower, These debates are contingent on underlying ideas for how whistleblowing should be handled and what channel is most appropriate, where debates also persist. While there is widespread agreement that whistleblowing is a good thing (a position we assume in this book) the purpose of this book is to draw out the debates around the who and the how, two of the important questions for business to consider when dealing with whistleblowing disclosures. This second volume explores extra-organizational factors and their impact on the whistleblowing environment. It will be of great importance to academics and researchers of business ethics, HRM, corporate governance, leadership, strategy and corporate law.

Fighting for Love: Journal of a Training Analysis
by Marianne Lovink GoldsmithFighting for Love: Journal of a Training Analysis is a unique account of an eight-year psychoanalysis, journaled and retrospectively annotated from the patient’s perspective in the aftermath of a traumatic dissociation. This book tells the story of that analysis in two parts.Part One, The Awakening, places the analysis in its dynamic and historical context and sets the stage for the analysis. A survivor of a Japanese concentration camp in Indonesia in WWII, parental loss and recurrent abandonments as a child, Goldsmith takes the reader deep into the pain she repressed and dissociated. Part One incorporates important components of the analysis, such as its ‘signal dream’, within the narrative. Part Two, The Analysis, is an edited version of Goldsmith’s original journal with retrospective and expository comments inserted, documenting the evolution of the transference and the relationship with her analyst. With the help and love of her analyst, the author was able to find the words she did not have as a child and feel the feelings she could not feel before. This book will resonate with anyone who has experienced trauma and offers insight to those who treat its aftermath. Psychoanalytic professionals in practice and training, including psychotherapists and counselors, will find this book compelling, as will readers interested in the psychoanalytic process.

Teacher Education and Cultural Change: England, France, West Germany (Routledge Revivals)
by James Lynch H. Dudley PlunkettFirst published in 1973, Teacher Education and Cultural Change analyses significant issues in the reform of teacher education on the evidence of up-to-date official and academic source materials and direct investigation. It contributes to the comparative sociology of education by highlighting the question as to whether teacher education policies are geared primarily to educational and social conservation or change. Features of teacher education are classified according to a scheme comprising four linked themes—cultural perceptions of teaching; the process of becoming a teacher; curricula; the organization of teacher education. Attention is given to cultural and social factors acting to democratize educational philosophies and structures. Reform-oriented policies are evaluated for their coherence and sociological realism. Differences in the three systems are found to reflect their histories and their socio-economic and political contexts, but a common movement is discerned towards democratic systems, responding to person rather than to institution-centred values. The book should help to fill a serious gap in comparative studies of teacher education, and should be of interest to students, academics, and administrators concerned with the study and development of educational systems.
School and Community in Less Developed Areas (Routledge Revivals)
by Kevin M. LillisThere has long been a debate about the role of schools and relevant education in community development in less developed areas. Efforts are continually being made to relate the work of schools more closely to the life of the local community. First published in 1985, School and Community in Less Developed Areas discusses this important subject. This volume considers relevant theory and reviews specific examples to highlight the difficulties of translating intentions into practice. It examines the problem as it relates to education at different levels and looks at the problem in relation to less developed areas, both Third World countries and the more backward parts of developed countries, from right around the world. The book will be a beneficial read for students and researchers of education.
Staking a Claim: Feminism, Bureaucracy and the State (Routledge Revivals)
by Suzanne Franzway R.W. Connell Dianne CourtFirst published in 1989, Staking a Claim brings feminist experience and social theory together to produce a systematic view of the State as an agent in sexual politics, thereby placing in question the nature of the State itself. The book approaches this task at two levels: an argument about the theory of the State and the social analysis of gender; and a set of case studies—childcare, equal employment opportunities, sexual violence—on the interplay between feminism and State structure in Australia during a period of 15 years. In drawing on the experience of feminist demands on the State, Staking a Claim reveals how the State is constituted by gender relations and shaped by the vicissitudes of sexual politics. It will be a beneficial read for students and researchers of sociology.
The Geography of Interwar Britain: The State and Uneven Development (Routledge Revivals)
by Stephen V. WardAs the first geographical study of interwar Britain, The Geography of Interwar Britain (originally published in 1988 and now with a new preface by the author) breaks new ground, incorporating original research and new interpretations of the work of historians and others within a geographical frame of reference. The central argument of the book is that the state in interwar Britain intensified uneven capitalist development. State actions in many important fields, including macro-economic policy, defence, industrial rationalisation, labour and unemployment policy, local government and regional policy, are analysed in detail. These studies show that, until the later 1930s, state policies worked to the disadvantage of depressed ‘outer’ Britain and favoured the more prosperous south and midlands. However, shifts in state policies were apparent as rearmament and changes in macro-economic policies necessitated new approaches. Significantly the first stages in the creation of what became the post-1945 political consensus were evident at this time, particularly in regional and industrial location policy. The book will be of interest to geographers, economic and social historians, political scientists, sociologists, and planners.
Indian Crisis: The Background (Routledge Revivals)
by John S. HoylandThe author of Indian Crisis (first published in 1943) spent over fifteen years as an educationalist and social and religious worker in India and was awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind Gold Medal for Public Service. He has had prolonged personal acquaintance not only with the Indian “intellectuals”, but also with the concrete problems of poverty, famine, and epidemic as they are met with not only in the Indian industrial city and the small country town, but also in the villages in agricultural districts and amongst the jungle tribes. He is convinced that the present British system must give way as swiftly as possible to a future in which India shall have liberty to devise and run her own system of government. The difficulties ahead, especially in regard to the multitudinous divisions of caste, creed, and community, are squarely faced; the tragic failures and mistakes of the recent war years are dealt with; and full consideration is given to the permanent influence of great movements of thought, which coming from the distant past mould both personalities and movements in modern India. This book will be beneficial for anyone interested in the colonial history of India.
Managing Poverty: The Limits of Social Assistance (Routledge Revivals)
by Carol WalkerSince the Second World War, the means test has played a role of growing importance in British social security provision. Beveridge’s vision of a society protected by a national system of social insurance has never been realized and, instead, social assistance, designed as a residual and diminishing means of support, has gradually been expanded to make up for the inadequacies of a national insurance system which was at first neglected and then attacked by governments. This important shift in the founding principles of the British income maintenance programme occurred without any public or parliamentary debate and without public acknowledgement by government that it was happening. As a result, British social assistance provision has continually been stretched beyond reasonable limits.First published in 1993, Managing Poverty examines the reasons for the growing importance of social assistance in British social security policy, traces the many changes introduced by successive governments, and explores in detail why both Conservative and Labour governments have been unsuccessful in finding permanent solutions to the recurrent problems that have emerged. Most of the previous literature on this subject has concentrated on the policy-making process, but Carol Walker looks at the efficacy of these policies from the point of view of the service users, the claimants. She uses empirical evidence on the experiences and views of claimants to evaluate benefit provision. This book will be an invaluable text to all undergraduates and postgraduates in the social sciences, particularly social policy, and to all welfare professionals.
Musical Life in Poland: The Postwar Years 1945–1977 (Routledge Revivals)
by Lidia Rappoport-GelfandNever in the history of Polish music has there been a period like the one that followed World War II. No other era has given the world so many outstanding composers and so many talented works in all kinds of musical genres. Polish music asserted itself on the world scene as independent, distinct, and creatively important phenomenon.First published in English in 1991, Musical Life in Poland outlines the general trends of the evolution of postwar music in Poland by periods. The author discusses in detail the specifics of national traditions of Polish culture and art, beginning with the purely Polish romantic and expressive tradition and ending with the powerful influence of Catholicism on art. She introduces a large group of talented composers and their artistically valuable works to the English-speaking reader and comprehensively covers musical culture in Poland.
Contested Peace in Mozambique: Global Norms and the Post-War Political Order
by Manuel Francisco SamboThis book explores the complexity of peacebuilding in Mozambique following its devastating 16-year war. While international efforts aimed to establish a stable market democracy, this book reveals how the country&’s post-war journey has been marred by recurring violence and the rise of authoritarian governance. Drawing on extensive qualitative research of historical and contemporary challenges, the book transcends traditional critiques of liberal peacebuilding by navigating the intersection of liberal ideals and authoritarian practices. It meticulously examines how Mozambique&’s leadership has outwardly embraced liberal strategies such as dialogue, decentralisation and entrepreneurship while simultaneously deploying authoritarian tactics to maintain control. Through this dual approach, the book argues, Mozambique has developed a form of "contested peace" marked by violence, instability and unpredictability. This book offers theoretical contributions and empirical insights to scholars, students, and practitioners. It sheds light on the delicate balance between liberal and authoritarian governance and provides a fresh perspective on how peace can be achieved—and lost—in post-conflict nations.
Social Stigma and Drug Use: Gender Perspectives, Family Contexts and Intersections
by Telmo Mota RonzaniThis book presents interdisciplinary studies that analyze how social stigma affects people who use psychoactive substances. Bringing together contributions by researchers from different fields such as biology, social sciences, nursing, medicine, dentistry, psychology and social work, it adopts an intersectional perspective to show how the categories of gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, territory, and social class are essential to understand the processes of stigmatization of specific groups of users of alcohol and other drugs. Written by members of the Ibero-Latin American Network on Stigma and Drug Use, chapters in this volume explore, in a contextual and intersectional way, how social stigma impacts drug user&’s lives, drawing special attention to issues of gender and family contexts. Authors discuss, from a gender perspective, how stigma impacts not only the lives of people who use drugs, but also the lives of their relatives, partners and caregivers, who are often blamed for the user&’s condition and as a consequence face prejudice, discrimination and social isolation. Social Stigma and Drug Use: Gender Perspectives, Family Contexts and Intersections will be of interest to both researchers and professionals from different fields who work with drug users, such as psychologists; psychiatrists; nurses; social workers and public health researchers and professionals. It will also be a valuable resource for policy makers and activists interested in developing and fighting for social and health policies that can provide care and at the same time respect the human rights of drug users. The original manuscript of this book was written in Portuguese and Spanish and translated into English with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Deadly Consequences: The Unintended Impact of Sentencing Reforms on California County Jails
by James W. Marquart Chad R. Trulson Matt DeLisi Jonathan W. CaudillThis book investigates the unintended and deadly consequences of criminal justice reforms through observing the effects of prison depopulation sentencing reform on county jails. This mixed-methods case study explores how California&’s sentencing reform efforts in 2011 (Assembly Bill 109) and 2014 (Proposition 47) to depopulate California state prisons impacted California county jail inmate culture and experiences. Its results demonstrate how California county jails inmate culture became more like prison inmate culture, resulting in increased inmate deaths and a deadlier county jail experience. Of particular value in this exploration are the theoretical and real-world policy implications of legislation on correctional facility administration. From a theoretical perspective, this work improves our understanding of the interconnected criminal justice system. From a policy perspective, implications cover unintended collateral consequences and mechanisms to reduce them. This volume is ideal for policy makers and researchers of criminal justice reform.
In Search of the Real Max Weber: A Dynamic Interpretive Approach to Action and Agency
by Colin CampbellThis book uses the contrast between the theoretical positions of the two Max Webers - that is the Weber of the Protestant Ethic thesis and the Weber of the theory of action – as the basis for developing a theory of agency and an associated dynamic interpretive approach to action. The book critiques traditional theories of action for neglecting the physical dimension, for conflating agency with action, and contrasting the latter with behaviour. It argues that action is not just cerebral or communicative but inherently tied to effort, emotion, and imagination, with voluntarism understood in terms of attention instead of intention, and the exercise of will rather than choice. This is the basis of a "dynamic interpretivist" approach, one that integrates behavioural insights with interpretive sociology, highlighting how actors actively maintain their power of agency. The concept of "character" is also introduced as a crucial link between individual agency, ethical values, and cultural systems. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of sociology, anthropology, media studies, and criminology, as well as social theorists.
