Leading with Depth: The Impact of Emotions and Relationships on Leadership

by Claudia Nagel

Leadership goes well beyond efficient management, and the significance of emotions on the success of organisations is often underestimated. In Leading With Depth: The Impact of Emotions and Relationships, Claudia Nagel guides us through the emotional and relational fallacies of organisational leadership from both the personal and the systemic perspective. Nagel expertly weaves theory, including attachment, neuroscientific, psychodynamic, psychosocial, and psychoanalytic, with practical advice. She looks at the leader as an individual and leadership as a context within systems such as groups, organisations, and societies. The book is divided into two parts and contains thirty-eight figures to illustrate important aspects of leadership. The first chapter in each part is purely theoretical followed by more method-oriented and practical chapters, which are complemented by pertinent case studies from well-known experts in the field (coaches, consultants, or academics). Contributors include Gilles Amado, Birgitte Bonnerup, Phil Boxterk, Halina Brunning, Annemette Hasselager, Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries, Olya Khaleelee, Fiona Martin, Ajit Menon, Rose Mersky, Mal O'Connor, Larissa Philatova, Martin Ringer, Rob Ryan, and Kalina Stamenova. Each chapter concludes with a brief overview of the key learnings for the reader to take away. In this way, Nagel encourages practical learning and application and engagement with the text. Nagel's clear language spares the reader of academic jargon and is highly readable. The book successfully bridges the gap from theoretical concepts to real-life application and will be of value to incoming and experienced leaders alike, as well as organisational consultants and executive coaches looking to inform their practice.

Veronica Brady: A Living Legacy

by Unknown

Veronica Brady (1929-2015) was a nun, academic and activist. Her intellectual life, firmly rooted in Australian culture, was focussed on stripping the thin veneer of our dominant materialistic culture to forge a greater understanding of our place in a more just world. One-time member of the ABC Board, Brady was a wine-loving, bike-riding, diminutive figure with a fierce reputation for plain speaking. An expert on Australian literature, and living life as a "communist" in a community of Loreto nuns, teaching, she cut a non-conformist figure in an age when the humanist values she upheld seemed increasingly under threat. She strove to defend them with a sharp mind, a contemporary Christian theology, and a willingness to put her boots on the ground in street protests. The essays gathered here by colleagues, students, friends and family bring her compassion, interests and concerns to life with an immediacy, fondness and respect. She inspired others, through her writings, actions and teaching, and the essays reveal her larger-than-life character, her passion for teaching, her concerns for justice for Indigenous Australians, and the intellectual and spiritual legacy she bequeathed to us all.

Some Things Considered: A Selection of Essays of Biblical and Historical Significance

by Bryan W Ball

In Some Things Considered, Bryan Ball offers his readers a unique selection of distinctive essays on topics of theological and historical significance. Designed as stand-alone essays, across the volume Ball nevertheless explores the core beliefs fundamental to Christianity and key principles of biblical interpretation, allowing readers to come to his later chapters with a thorough grounding in biblical theology and interpretation. Ball then explores a variety of topics, from the geological and geophysical evidence of the Genesis Flood to the seventeenth century controversy about the Sabbath day. Honing in on oft-misunderstood verses such as Daniel 8:14 and Genesis 1:16, he offers nuanced interpretations. He culminates the collection with a discussion of the biblical context surrounding the 'The Decline of the West'.

Life and Hope Out of Darkness: Creative Interventions for Helping People in Violent Communities

by Sarah Coleman

Can a young British woman from across the seas impact a group of African women living in a poverty-stricken community likened to a war zone? How can she help them deal with trauma when they constantly live in trauma? Life And Hope Out Of Darkness: Creative Interventions for Helping People in Violent Communities reveals the story of Sarah Coleman and the women she worked with, using art, drama, puppetry, dance, mindfulness, and breathwork to shine a ray of light and hope into the lives of women stuck in a whirlwind of violence and poverty. Sarah takes the reader on a journey using the voices and stories of three women (each created from an amalgamation of people she worked with) to depict what life is like living in such difficult circumstances. She emphasises the importance of creating a safe space for effective therapeutic work to happen and how to achieve this in a violent community. Sarah also explores how to navigate differences, including the necessity of acknowledging white power and privilege. She describes how to help people create good support structures in their lives and how to seek support from each other. In a community where isolation is a means of survival, her book opens up the possibility to connect: to play with each other, to reach into each other's lives and build a way of creating a healthy community, to learn to forgive past hurts and to receive forgiveness, to embrace new potential, and to reach out and search for role models for guidance. It also delves into the importance of psychoeducation to raise awareness of what is happening in the body, with exercises in breathing, dancing and movement. Sarah highlights the importance of shaking out the body to dispel trapped trauma and calm the nervous system down. Working in violent communities takes its toll. Sarah gives testimony of the impact on her life and the importance of self-care. The book ends by affirming it is possible to live with hope despite difficult circumstances. Each chapter ends with thoughts for reflection that benefit us all, making us look at the ways in which we live and how we can all work to make things better. This uplifting book is recommended reading for all therapists and trainees involved in working with groups or the repercussions of trauma, and for individuals looking to bring hope and inspiration into their lives.

Identity Politics: Where Did It All Go Wrong?

by David Pilgrim

Identity politics have taken a strong hold on modern society, in particular online on social media platforms. But to what extent have they contributed to human flourishing? Have they changed the world for the better, and to what extent? David Pilgrim explores identity politics as a 'curate's egg': good and bad in parts. The good, that they shine light on topics that may previously have been neglected. The bad, their tendency towards absolutism and premature certainties. The world is nuanced and contradictory, and our awareness of it is highly partial. Identity politics are an inadequate response to that complexity and mystery of life. They take away the need to give free expression to all views, including those we may not only disagree with but might also find offensive. Pilgrim re-establishes a realist objection to strong social constructivist arguments within social science about gender, sexualities, and putative moral panics. This accessible book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in contemporary policy formation or reform. It will appeal to students and professionals from the fields of sociology, politics, social policy, social work, philosophy, mental health, and public health could use this book.

Masters of their Craft: The Art, Architecture and Garden Design of the Nesfields

by Shirley Rose Evans

In this informative volume, Dr Shirley Rose Evans explores the lives of two of the most prominent designers of the nineteenth century, designers who have left their distinctive mark on buildings and gardens throughout the British Isles. William Andrews Nesfield and William Eden Nesfield, father and son, were inspired by the beauty and romance of the past, and both played important roles in the nineteeth-century revivals of the Jacobean, Renaissance and Gothic styles. The Nesfields produced horticultural and architectural designs for wealthy and influential landowners, winning important public commissions at Kew Gardens and the Prince Consort's Kensington museum complex. Shirley Rose Evans covers the education of both men and the evolution of their aesthetic sensibilities in detail. William Andrews Nesfield's early life in Durham, his military training and his travels in Canada and Europe fed his fascination with Renaissance proportion and the pre-Revolutionary French parterre-de-broderie, a design of intricate and highly artificial bedding that was to become his signature. His son flourished in the artistic milieu in which he was raised, but his main passion was for Gothic detailing. Both were highly accomplished painters, and Nesfield Senior's watercolours were lauded by John Ruskin. This illustrated volume will be of great interest to enthusiasts of the remarkable work of the Nesfields in particular, or of Victorian design in general.

We Don't Speak of Fear: Large-Group Identity, Societal Conflict and Collective Trauma

by Vamık D. Volkan, Regine Scholz, and M. Gerard Fromm

With contributions from Lord John Alderdice, Deniz Aribog?an, Abdulkadir Cevik, Senem B. Cevik, Coline Covington, Robi Friedman, David Fromm, M. Gerard Fromm, Hiba Husseini, Aleksandr V. Obolonski, Ford Rowan, Regine Scholz, Edward R. Shapiro, Vamik D. Volkan The International Dialogue Initiative (IDI) is a private, international, multidisciplinary group comprised of psychoanalysts, academics, diplomats, and other professionals who bring a psychologically informed perspective to the study and amelioration of societal conflict. It aims to provide a reflective space to enable an understanding of how the emotional and historical background of hostile relations - often related to trauma - is being experienced in the present. By doing so, antagonists can overcome resistances to dialogue and facilitate the discovery of peaceful solutions to intergroup problems. This book brings together key members of the IDI to present the theory and practice of the important work they do. At its heart, the book holds the idea that, while traumatic experiences may happen to an individual or a family, they also affect society and large-group identity over long periods of time. In that way, trauma plays out between generations and between countries. The book is divided into three parts: theory, application, and methodology. Trauma is the key thread running throughout and the distinguished contributors investigate healing, dehumanisation, memory, the pandemic, war, terrorism, identity, culture, the law, justice, and religion, among many other fascinating topics. The authors bring in case studies from all over the world, including the United States, Northern Ireland, Russia, Israel, Turkey, Germany, Egypt, and Palestine. To make sense of these, they draw on a wide range of approaches: group relations theory, group analytic theory, psychoanalysis, large-group psychology, psychodynamic theory, psychology, economics, sociology, political science, history, journalism, and the law, to name but a few. This must-read book brings theory to vivid life and brings hope that our fractured world can learn to heal.

Baptism: A Guide to Life from Death (Christian Essentials)

by Peter J. Leithart

You've been baptized. But do you understand what it means? Baptism is the doorway into membership in the church. It's a public declaration of the washing away of our sin and the beginning of our new life in Christ. But the sacrament that is meant to unite us is often a spring of division instead. All Christians use water to baptize. All invoke the triune name. Beyond that, there's little consensus. Talk about baptism and you're immediately plunged into arguments. Whom should we baptize? What does baptism do? Why even do it at all? Peter Leithart reunifies a church divided by baptism. He recovers the baptismal imagination of the Bible, explaining how baptism works according to Scripture. Then, in conversation with Christian tradition, he shows why baptism is something worth recovering and worth agreeing on.

The Voluble Soul: Thomas Traherne's Poetic Style and Thought

by Richard Willmott

"The world's fair beauty set my soul on fire." In this first study of the full range of Traherne's poetry Richard Willmott explains his 'metaphysical' poetry to all who are attracted by the beauty of his language, but puzzled by his meaning. He offers guidance both for the student of English, uncertain about Traherne's theological ideas, and the student of theology, put off by seventeenth-century poetic conventions and diction. Using a wealth of quotation, he examines Traherne's verse alongside that of a variety of his contemporaries, including Andrew Marvell, Lucy Hutchinson, Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor. Central to Traherne's poetry and generous theology is his delight in the capacity of his soul to approach God through an appreciation of His infinite creation. This soul is 'voluble', not only because it can express its thoughts with fluency, but also because it can enfold within itself the infinity of God's creation, taking in everything that it perceives, considering the latest scientific speculations about the atom and astronomy, but also looking clear-sightedly at Restoration society's materialism and - in one startlingly savage satire - the corruption of the royal court.

The Art and Science of Relationship: The Practice of Integrative Psychotherapy

by Janet Moursund Richard G Erskine

This is an easy-to-read explication of relationally focused integrative psychotherapy/counselling that will be enjoyed by novice and experienced mental health professionals worldwide. Richard Erskine and Janet Moursund illuminate the central role of the therapeutic relationship, and of relationships in general, both in the healing process and in maintaining a psychologically healthy life. They posit that the therapeutic relationship is key to helping clients become integrated or whole, and present both theory and practice to demonstrate this view. The book is divided into three parts: Theoretical Foundations, Therapeutic Practice, and a full verbatim transcript of a therapy session. The book's unique feature is the linkage of the transcript section with the earlier, theoretical and practice-oriented sections to clearly show how theory can be applied in the consulting room. For virtually every exchange between therapist and patient, the reader is directed back to a discussion of the specific aspect of theory and method that underly the actual words being spoken. The result is theory brought to life, theory brought out of the classroom or the professional workshop and into the real world of ongoing psychotherapy. This book is highly recommended for students and practitioners of psychotherapy, counselling, and clinical psychology, and will be of interest to all those who work in a mental health setting.

Engaging the World with Abraham Kuyper (Lived Theology)

by Michael R. Wagenman

Christ declares "Mine!" over every square inch of creation. In his well--known quote, Abraham Kuyper expressed the defining characteristic of his public theology: Jesus' sovereignty extends over all things. He believed Christians should engage the whole world in all of its various spheres. But what does that comprehensive calling practically look like for us today? In Engaging the World with Abraham Kuyper, Michael Wagenman explores the practical application of Kuyper's public theology. Using Kuyper's own life as an example, he shows us how the gospel can permeate all aspects of society: our identity, public discourse, education, the church, politics. Ultimately, this means engaging the world with perceptive truth that's mindful of the dynamics at work in our time and place.

Perceptions and Possibilities: Strategic and Solution-Oriented Approaches to Working with Depression

by Paul J Leslie

This book will assist therapists in easily implementing the concepts of strategic and solution-oriented applications into one's therapeutic work with depressed clients. The focus of these brief therapy approaches is on the clients' resources and potential rather than on their deficits and pathology. These ideas have their roots in the work of Milton H. Erickson, the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, and Bill O'Hanlon's Solution Oriented Therapy. The methods and applications recognise the significance of how clients perceive their problems, the importance on assisting clients to be validated and understood in the realm of their experiences, and the creation of change in their views and actions concerning their individual situations. Perceptions and Possibilities is designed to assist therapists in finding new ways of moving their therapy sessions away from an entrenched focus on client pathology. Instead, therapists are encouraged towards brief and effective interactions with a focus on future-oriented possibilities. Paul Leslie presents established and cutting-edge research, colourful case studies, and stories told in everyday language to engage, educate, and aid mental health professionals. The aim is to enable them to understand how to easily adapt and apply creative and resourceful therapy interventions to help clients who are suffering from depression. This book is highly recommended for psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists, particularly those who are interested in exploring brief therapies, postmodern/Ericksonian approaches, and solution-focused, systemic, and strategic therapies.

State of Affairs: The Science-Theology Controversy

by Richard J Coleman

The last sixty years have witnessed a virtual explosion of interest in how modern science and traditional Christianity intersect. This new rapprochement with science has irrevocably altered how Christians think of God, providing a foundation from which we cannot retreat, but from which we also cannot move forward until we examine the presumptions on which it is based. For the first time, Richard J. Coleman interprets in a clear and meaningful way the themes and practitioners that make this rapprochement different, and what it has achieved. But this book is more than description - it is an inquiry into whether Christian theology has lost its authentic voice by its singular focus on accommodating modern science.

The Gates of Hell: An Untold Story of Faith and Perseverance in the Early Soviet Union

by Matthew Heise

The gates of hell shall not prevail. Decimated by war, revolution, and famine, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Russia was in critical condition in 1921. In The Gates of Hell, Matthew Heise recounts the bravery and suffering of German--Russian Lutherans during the period between the two great world wars. These stories tell of ordinary Christians who remained faithful to death in the face of state persecution. Christians in Russia had dark days characterized by defeat, but God preserved his church. Against all human odds, the church would outlast the man--made sandcastles of communist utopianism. The Gates of Hell is a wonderful testimony to the enduring power of God's word, Christ's church, and the Spirit's faithfulness.

Private Lives of the Ancient Mariner: Coleridge and his Children

by Molly Lefebure

A fascinating new study of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 'Private Lives of the Ancient Mariner' illuminates the poet's deeply troubled personality and stormy personal life through a highly original study of his relationships. In her last published work the celebrated Coleridgean, Molly Lefebure, provides profound psychological insights into Coleridge through a meticulous study of his domestic life, drawing upon a vast and unique body of knowledge gained from a lifetime's study of the poet, and making skilful use of the letters, poems and biographies of the man himself and his family and friends. The author traces the roots of Coleridge's unarguably dysfunctional personality from his earliest childhood; his position as his mother's favoured child, the loss of this status with the death of his father, and removal to the 'Bluecoat' school in London. Coleridge's narcissistic depression, flamboyance, and cold-hearted, often cruel, rejection of his family and of loving attachments in general are examined in close detail. The author also explores Coleridge's careers in journalism and politics as well as poetry, in his early, heady 'jacobin' days, and later at the heart of the British wartime establishment at Malta. In both of these arenas Coleridge exerted his talents to brilliant effect, although they have often been overlooked in appraisals of his works. His virtual abandonment of his children and tragic disintegration under the influence of opium are included in the broad sweep of the book which also encompasses an examination of the lives of Coleridge's children, upon whom the manipulations of the father left their destructive mark. Molly Lefebure unravels the enigma that is Coleridge with consummate skill in a book which will bring huge enjoyment to any reader with an interest in the poet's life and times.

Hearers and Doers: A Pastor's Guide to Growing Disciples Through Scripture and Doctrine

by Kevin J. Vanhoozer

The foundation of discipleship is sound, scriptural doctrine. The value of sound doctrine is often misunderstood by the modern church. While it can be dry and dull, when it flows from the story of Scripture, it can be full of life and love. This kind of doctrine, steeped in Scripture, is critical for disciple-making. And it's often overlooked by modern pastors. In Hearers and Doers, Kevin Vanhoozer makes the case that pastors, as pastor- theologians, ought to interpret Scripture theologically to articulate doctrine and help cultivate disciples. scriptural doctrine is vital to the life of the church, and local pastor-theologians should be the ones delivering it to their communities. With arresting prose and striking metaphors, Vanhoozer addresses the most pressing problems in the modern church with one answer: teach sound, scriptural doctrine to make disciples.
