Developing Mathematical Reasoning: Avoiding the Trap of Algorithms (Corwin Mathematics Series)

by Pamela Weber Harris

Math is not rote-memorizable. Math is not random-guessable. Math is figure-out-able. Author Pam Harris argues that teaching real math—math that is free of distortions–will reach more students more effectively and result in deeper understanding and longer retention. This book is about teaching undistorted math using the kinds of mental reasoning that mathematicians do. Memorization tricks and algorithms meant to make math "easier" are full of traps that sacrifice long-term student growth for short-lived gains. Students and teachers alike have been led to believe that they’ve learned more and more math, but in reality their brains never get any stronger. Using these tricks may make facts easier to memorize in isolation, but that very disconnect distorts the reality of math. The mountain of trivia piles up until students hit a breaking point. Humanity′s most powerful system of understanding, organizing, and making an impact on the world becomes a soul-draining exercise in confusion, chaos, and lost opportunities. Developing Mathematical Reasoning: Avoiding the Trap of Algorithms emphasizes the importance of teaching students increasingly sophisticated mathematical reasoning and understanding underlying concepts rather than relying on a set rule for solving problems. This book illuminates a hierarchy of mathematical reasoning to help teachers guide students through various domains of math development, from basic counting and adding to more complex proportional and functional reasoning. Everyone is capable of understanding and doing real math. This book: Highlights the important mathematical relationships, strategies, and models for students to develop Offers personal stories, reflection sections, and extensive practical exercises for easy implementation Includes real math—a lot of it—to provide teachers with examples they can put to use in their classrooms immediately This book is a valuable resource for educators looking to reach more students by building a strong foundation of mathematical thinking in their students. By addressing common misconceptions about math and providing practical strategies for teaching real math, this book shows that everyone can use the mathematical relationships they already know to reason about new relationships. In other words, everyone can math.

Etiquette for Lovers and Killers

It's 1964 in the tiny town of Eastport, Maine, and Billie McCadie is bored to death. She's surrounded by dull people with more manners than sense, and no sign of the intrigue or romance that fills her beloved novels. That is, until an engagement ring and cryptic love letter turn up, addressed to 'Gertrude'. Until she meets yacht-club handsome Avery Webster. Until the unsettling phone calls and visits from a man in a fedora begin. Until she's one of the last people to see Gertrude alive . . . and the first to see her dead. What follows is an intoxicating cocktail of stalking, blackmail, Jell-O salads, and champagne secrets, all served along the rocky Maine coastline. Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has a secret. And (strangely) everyone has a boat. But who is willing to kiss and tell? As the body count rises and the danger nears, why does Billie feel like she's more than just a side character? And after yearning to be in the action for so long, would it be terribly unladylike to have some fun of her own? A love letter to uncivilized behaviour, Etiquette for Lovers and Killers blends mystery and romance into a twisty, murderous delight that aches for better manners.

by Steve Mostyn

Aspiring leaders are hungry to learn all that they can about how to be a more effective leader. And certainly there are tools and best practices young leaders should know and add to their toolkit. But - as Steve Mostyn, one of the world's leading innovators in executive leadership, has learned over the past decades of teaching this cohort - two equally useful activities for the aspiring leader are reflection and experimentation. In his new book WHY GREAT LEADERS ASK GREAT QUESTIONS, Mostyn has crafted an elegant collection of the seven provocative questions aspiring leaders should ask themselves in order to spur that reflection and experimentation. These are some of the most important questions Mostyn poses to each cohort of the Oxford Executive Leadership program's students, honed by the past answers and engagement of thousands of students. The book is simple in conception, profound in execution. In seven accessible chapters, with exercises, research, and examples, the reader will engage with these questions:How do I reflect? How do I spend my time?Where does my power come from? How do I grow my network? How do I make change happen around here? How do I manage my energy? How do I grow more leaders?Inspired in part by Mostyn's work on the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme - an accelerated international leadership development program with over 5,000 alumni around the world - and in part by his numerous workshop sessions where he challenges and supports leaders through his unique questions, the premise of the book is well-tested with aspiring and practicing leaders and is proven to spark both reflection and growth. These seven questions are drawn from the author's deep experience with the needs of rising young executives. Readers will engage with provocative exercises, highly accessible overviews of applicable research, and examples from fellow mid-career executives.

The Future of Tutoring: Lessons from 10,000 School District Tutoring Initiatives

by Liz Cohen

The inspiring story of the high-impact tutoring movement and its revitalization of the post-pandemic classroom Public education isn&’t a sector known for quick change, but the COVID-19 pandemic turned schools into labs of innovation nationwide. By the pandemic&’s end, a remarkable number of K–12 classrooms had come to embrace tutoring, particularly &“high-impact tutoring&” and its adaptable design. In The Future of Tutoring, Liz Cohen looks back at a unique revolution and finds that, with effective buy-in and thoughtful implementation, tutoring programs can improve academic performance for all students. Within a year into the pandemic, 10,000 US school districts were offering some sort of tutoring initiative after years of almost none. The lessons learned are vast. Traveling to Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, DC, Cohen covers the ups and downs of this massive shift, with a special focus on high-impact tutoring, in which a small group of students work consistently with an adult at least three days a week. Whether the instruction was in-person or virtual, performed by district staff or college students, or focused on math or reading, this renewed investment in the student-tutor relationship helped educators design curricula around students&’ specific needs and motivators, with measurable results. Cohen tells an inspiring story of administrators, practitioners, and state leaders all staking their reputations on a bold intervention. As leaders struggle with how to combat students&’ learning loss, The Future of Tutoring shows where resources can make a real difference.

Mutual Perception of the Blind and the Sighted

by Blind Relief Association Delhi

Mutual Perception of the Blind and the Sighted is a landmark study conducted by The Blind Relief Association to examine the reciprocal attitudes between blind and sighted people in India. It investigates how the sighted perceive blindness, how blind individuals view the sighted, and the influence of family, peers, and employers on these perceptions. The study reveals that societal prejudice and stereotypes often impose greater challenges than blindness itself, shaping self-image, opportunities, and community integration. By analyzing dimensions such as rejection, pity, overprotection, and acceptance, the book emphasizes the critical role of attitudes in rehabilitation and social inclusion. It is one of the earliest in-depth Indian studies on the psychological and social implications of blindness and remains a valuable resource for educators, policymakers, and disability advocates.

Japanese Childcare Method - HOIKU

by Heiji Fujimori

Japanese Childcare Method by Heiji Fujimori presents a unique perspective on early childhood education through the philosophy of Mimamoru—a Japanese approach to “watching over” children with warmth and distance, enabling them to grow independently while feeling secure. Drawing from decades of experience in nursery education, Fujimori emphasizes the importance of creating environments where children learn naturally through play, group interaction, and self-motivation rather than direct adult instruction. The book critiques the division of childcare in Japan between kindergartens and day care centers, advocating instead for a unified, child-centered system that balances care and education. It highlights the role of caregivers in fostering emotional security, self-confidence, and independence, while also stressing the power of group learning and multi-age interaction. Rooted in East Asian ethical and cultural values, the Mimamoru approach seeks to nurture children who coexist harmoniously, contribute to society, and develop self-awareness as members of a community. This book serves as a practical guide for educators, caregivers, and parents, offering insights into childcare methods that encourage natural growth, empathy, and resilience in children.
