Vulnerable: The Law, Policy and Ethics of COVID-19

by Colleen M. Flood Sridhar Venkatapuram Jane Philpott Vanessa MacDonnell Sophie Thériault

The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease known as COVID-19, has infected people in 212 countries so far and on every continent except Antarctica. Vast changes to our home lives, social interactions, government functioning and relations between countries have swept the world in a few months and are difficult to hold in one’s mind at one time. That is why a collaborative effort such as this edited, multidisciplinary collection is needed. This book confronts the vulnerabilities and interconnectedness made visible by the pandemic and its consequences, along with the legal, ethical and policy responses. These include vulnerabilities for people who have been harmed or will be harmed by the virus directly and those harmed by measures taken to slow its relentless march; vulnerabilities exposed in our institutions, governance and legal structures; and vulnerabilities in other countries and at the global level where persistent injustices harm us all. Hopefully, COVID-19 will forces us to deeply reflect on how we govern and our policy priorities; to focus preparedness, precaution, and recovery to include all, not just some. Published in English with some chapters in French.

by Justin Piché Carolyn Côté-Lussier David Moffette

Sport Policy in Canada (Open Access)

by Jean Harvey Lucie Thibault

Sport Policy in Canada provides the first and most comprehensive analysis of the new Canadian Sport Policy adopted in 2012. In light of this new policy, the authors, top scholars in the field, provide detailed accounts of the most salient sport policies and programs, while also discussing issues and challenges facing policy makers. In Canada and around the world, the last decades have known a sharp increase in state intervention and public funding in pursuit of medals on the international stage and in support of a more active lifestyle. Governments at all levels have made substantial investments in hope of hosting major sporting events to benefit from the economic impact and gain international prestige. The study of sport policies, often neglected in the past, is becoming an increasingly important research topic. Sport Policy in Canada seeks to fill this void by offering the most comprehensive analysis of sport policy since Macintosh, Bedecki, and Franks' Sport Policy in Canada (1987). - This book is published in English.

Language is the Key: The Canadian Language Benchmarks Model (Politics and Public Policy)

by Monika Jezak

The CLB/NCLC success was dependent on many factors—outstanding work by leading Canadian scholars; steady commitment of the government and non-governmental stakeholders at the federal, provincial, and local level; and, last but not least, unconditional commitment and caring on the part of an invested community of practice. Language is the key covers a range of topics: historical and political context that lead to the development of the Canadian standards, their current positioning in global educational markets, as well as their research and teaching cultures. This edited volume provides a comprehensive overview of recent and ongoing projects and of CLB- and NCLC-related materials, tools and resources for teaching and assessment. Finally, it offers a bold outlook, proposing various scenarios to branch out beyond these benchmarks into the domains of higher education, essential skills, literacy, workplace training, as well as international and indigenous languages. The 20th anniversary of the CLB/NCLC provides an opportunity to reflect on the scope and importance of this exceptional Canadian intellectual product.

The Academic Gateway: Understanding the Journey to Tenure (Education)

by Victoria Handford Timothy M. Sibbald

The Academic Gateway: Understanding the Journey to Tenure investigates the experiences of professors employed in tenure-track positions who are starting their career within a university environment, but have not yet attained the affirmation and permanence that tenure offers. The role that they have taken on entails the preparation of students within a professional school. Some of them have very limited professional experience, while others bring multiple years of experience with them in their transition to a faculty of education. The contributors speak to the three key components of their faculty role: teaching, service, and research. Addressing organizational structures and differences relative to prior roles, they examine how these changes have assisted, confused or altered the way they conduct their day-to-day work. They speak about relevant prior experiences, the preparation they received through graduate school, and the details of the learning curve as they entered into their tenure track role. Have they been successful? The reader will experience the same uncertainty and anticipation every professor goes through during their journey to tenure. This approach amplifies the realism of not knowing whether issues that are spoken about will ultimately be overcome and enhances the validity of their experiences by not biasing the contributions towards those who expect success.

Transformative Physical Rehabilitation: Thriving After a Major Health Event (101 Collection)

by Claire-Jehanne Dubouloz Wilner

In adult physical rehabilitation, the transformative learning theory presents the basis for a detailed model of Meaning Perspective Transformation in Physical Rehabilitation based on research evidence, with examples and cases, and presents directives for clinical applications. Transformative Physical Rehabilitation: Thriving After a Major Health Event draws from the theoretical background of transformative learning in adult education (Mezirow) to discuss the expansion and transfer of knowledge to clinical rehabilitation and community health rehabilitation settings for rehabilitation interventions. It also presents ground breaking findings of a fifteen-year research project on the process of meaning perspective transformation with client/patient groups. The project generated the first model of transformative change in the field of physical rehabilitation, built on the results of successive, externally funded research projects completed for the first time with various client populations undergoing interventions in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and other physical health rehabilitation disciplines. The book is written for clinicians, educators, and students of physical rehabilitation, as well as for those who are interested in helping a loved one deal with personal change. Homelessness & Health in Canada (Health and Society)

by Manal Guirguis-Younger Stephen W. Hwang Ryan McNeil

Homelessness & Health in Canada explores, for the first time, the social, structural, and environmental factors that shape the health of homeless persons in Canada. Covering a wide range of topics from youth homelessness to end-of-life care, the authors strive to outline policy and practice recommendations to respond to the ongoing public health crisis. This book is divided into three distinct but complimentary sections. In the first section, contributors explore how homelessness affects the health of particular homeless populations, focusing on the experiences of homeless youth, immigrants, refugees and people of Aboriginal ancestry. In the second section, contributors investigate how housing and public health policy as well as programmatic responses can address various health challenges, including severe mental illness and HIV/AIDS. In the final section, contributors highlight innovative Canadian interventions that have shown great promise in the field. Together, they form a comprehensive survey of an all too important topic and serve as a blueprint for action.

#FreeBritney: The hidden story that led Britney Spears from media harassment to being almost completely deprived of her freedom

by Steven Heggings

We are sorry, Britney..." As if it were the catchy chorus in one of her songs, the phrase became a trending topic when the documentary Framing Britney Spears was released. In addition to famous journalists, musicians and actors, many people understood that society as a whole had contributed to the pop star being caught in a desperate situation. It was not just the press harassment. It wasn't just the paparazzi. It wasn't just misogyny in the music industry. It wasn't just her father, who most fans depict as a greedy man. An appetite for celebrity gossip undoubtedly contributed to Britney Spears being stripped of a person's most precious asset: freedom.

by Steven Heggings

Queen of Bohemia Predicts Own Death: Gilded-Age Journalist Zoe Anderson Norris

by Eve M. Kahn

A trailblazing journalist who took on New York’s Gilded-Age injustices Zoe Anderson Norris was a woman ahead of her time. A Kentucky-born belle turned fearless Manhattan journalist, she used her pen as a weapon in the fight for justice. From exposing slumlords and corrupt politicians to advocating for impoverished immigrants, she captured the injustices of her era with a wit and tenacity that still resonate today. In this first biography of Norris, independent scholar Eve Kahn restores her legacy, illuminating her work as a novelist, magazine publisher, and social reformer who challenged the powerful and gave voice to the oppressed. A prolific writer and editor, Norris chronicled the struggles of Lower East Side immigrants in her self-published periodical, The East Side, often going undercover to report on the harsh realities of tenement life. She documented tragedies such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, publicly denounced predatory men, and advised women on seizing control of their destinies. With her bohemian spirit, she led the Ragged Edge Klub, a gathering of artists, writers, and social critics who rejected the status quo. But Norris’s courage came at a personal cost. Her life was marked by tumultuous relationships, family estrangement, and battles against the very injustices she exposed. She endured financial struggles, unfaithful or deadbeat husbands, and social ostracization for her refusal to remain silent. In her final issue of The East Side, she eerily predicted her own death, an uncanny premonition that made national headlines before she faded into obscurity. With meticulous research and captivating storytelling, Kahn brings Norris’s extraordinary life back into the spotlight. Drawing on newly uncovered archival materials, including Norris’s own writings, letters, and investigative reports, Queen of Bohemia Predicts Own Death sheds light on a fearless journalist whose influence on investigative reporting and social justice continues to be felt today. This biography is a compelling testament to the power of the written word in the fight for truth and equity.
