Inspire: The Universal Path for Leading Yourself and Others
by Adam GalinskyTwo kinds of leaders populate the world: those who inspire and those who infuriate. Which will you be?Whether you’re a leader, a member of a team, a spouse, or a parent, this engaging and rigorous exploration unpacks the science of inspiration. Through compelling stories, fascinating research, and practical tips for addressing the common dilemmas we face daily, Inspire reveals how all of us, regardless of status or circumstance, can be more inspiring more often. Social psychologist and leadership expert Adam Galinsky has spent three decades building a method for determining when we are inspiring versus infuriating, and where various leaders—presidents, CEOs, coaches, teachers, parents, and a wealth of others—currently land on that spectrum. Galinsky shows how inspiring leaders can fill us with a wellspring of hope and possibility as they guide us to become better versions of ourselves. In contrast, infuriating leaders disappoint and annoy, fueling seething cauldrons of rage. But both types of leaders are deeply connected—together, they represent a universal continuum that is rooted in the very architecture of the human brain. This means that inspiring leaders aren’t born—instead, we can inspire or infuriate in any given moment through our behavior, words, or presence. In this captivating book, Galinsky identifies the three universal archetypes of truly great leaders and explains how each of us can develop these characteristics within ourselves to become more inspiring:Visionaries offer a big-picture, optimistic, and engaging vision of the future;Exemplars are courageous and calm protectors who authentically express their passion while remaining consistent in word and deed;Mentors encourage, empower, and elevate others while challenging them to reach their potential.Inspire is an essential guide to becoming not only a better leader but also an effective decision-maker, a dynamic problem-solver, a value-creating negotiator, and an inclusive innovator.

Case Studies in Architecture and Landscape: Expanding the Legacy of Peter Blundell Jones
by Jan Woudstra Xiang RenThe architect, historian and critic Peter Blundell Jones (1949–2016) considered architecture as an expansive field within the arts and humanities and social sciences that included landscape and urban studies. His focus within this built environment was firmly on people and place, which to him meant developing a comprehension of the broad human, material and social engagements with specific localities. His favourite way to explore this human and environmental focus was through case studies of individual places, leading to a modus operandi to tackle the study of any place in a generous, rigorous and comprehensive manner that used the skills of related professions, of the sciences as well as of psychology and anthropology. Being able to adopt such interdisciplinarity determined the real value of his output, which was further enriched through the thick interpretation of placemaking in non-Western cultures. This book, celebrating the East-West Studies in Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield co-founded by Peter Blundell Jones in 1995, presents 16 distinctive case studies in order to underline the relevance of his case study methodology and global legacy. It is intended to have relevance for a range of disciplines including the design ones of architecture, landscape and urban design and planning, as well as anthropology, history, geography and cultural studies.
Developing Global Competence in World Language Education: A Four-Step Framework for Success
by Soyhan Egitim Seiko HarumiThis book presents a four-step framework to help English as a world language (EWL) learners successfully develop global competence, which is defined as the skills, values, and behaviors that prepare young people to thrive in diverse environments. The book showcases practical methods and strategies supported by autoethnography and empirical studies to detail the four elements of the framework towards developing global competence: English language proficiency, cross-cultural knowledge, adopting flexibility in oral communication, and embracing values beyond our horizons. While the English language and culture provide essential input for effective communication, developing flexibility in communication styles and viewing conflict as an opportunity for growth can help L2 learners navigate intercultural encounters more effectively and achieve cross-cultural adaptation. This text will be beneficial to language learners, intercultural communication majors, researchers, and educators in TESOL/EFL/ESL programs, as well as in-service teachers of English language learners (ELLs).
