When We Sold God's Eye: Diamonds, Murder and a Clash of Worlds in the Amazon

by Alex Cuadros

'A first-class work of reporting [and] a work of compassion for Indigenous peoples everywhere' BENJAMIN MOSER, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of SONTAG'A non-fiction novel of modern conquest, capitalism and murder . . . a stunning work' GREG GRANDIN, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of FORDLANDIAGrowing up in a remote corner of the Amazon, Pio, Maria, and Oita learned to hunt wild pigs and tapirs, gathering Brazil nuts and açaí berries from centuries-old trees. Then the first highway pierced through. Loggers and prospectors invaded, and they lost their families to terrible new weapons and diseases. Pushed to assimilate, they struggled to understand their new, capitalist reality. They ended up forging an uneasy symbiosis with their white antagonists - until a seam of diamonds erupted in their territory and decades of suppressed trauma burst out in a shocking act of retribution. Based on six years of immersive reporting and research, WHEN WE SOLD GOD'S EYE tells a unique kind of adventure story, a story of survival against all odds; of the temptations of wealth and the dream of prosperity; of a vital ecosystem threatened by the hunger for natural resources; of genocide and revenge. It's a story as old as the first European encounters with Indigenous people, playing out in the present day. But most of all, it's about a few startlingly clever individuals and their power to adapt - even thrive - in the most unlikely circumstances.

Benign Bigotry: The Psychology of Subtle Prejudice

by Kristin J. Anderson

Benign Bigotry delves into the multifaceted landscape of prejudice, spanning academic and scientific research, popular culture, and contemporary politics. At its core lies the concept of subtle prejudice-a pervasive, often unconscious bias in race, gender, and sexuality. Through meticulous analysis and the author's own experience serving eight years on the Police Oversight Board, this book exposes seven seemingly harmless cultural myths that perpetuate inequality. It also confronts prejudices against women and LGBTQ+ individuals, offering concrete strategies to dismantle entrenched beliefs. Designed as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate classes, yet accessible to the educated lay reader, each chapter caters to those interested in psychology, sociology, business, and education. With a valuable new chapter on systemic inequality, updated real-life examples, and engaging with the exploration of empirical research on discrimination and prejudice emerging since 2009, this second edition is not to be missed.

Place and Performance in Ancient Greece, Rome, and China (Antiquity in Global Context)

by Hans Beck Griet Vankeerberghen

This book examines the construction of space and place in early China and the ancient Mediterranean through the lens of performances conducted in specific locations. It highlights conceptions of place and performance, seeing both as crucial to the production of cultural meaning and communal cohesion, and as heavily dependent on the prevailing political culture. Whether urban or rural, global or local, central or fringe, public or private, real or imagined, theatrical or ritual, the places and performances highlighted serve to show both commonalities and differences between the ancient Mediterranean and early China. The range of places of comparison is also very diverse, including roads, gardens, neighbourhoods, hydraulic infrastructures, funerary performance, spectacles at court, and the everyday display of authority through clothing and fashion. Merovingian Worlds (Cambridge Medieval Textbooks)

by James T. Palmer

The Merovingian Kingdoms (c. 450–751) dominated much of what is now France, Belgium, and Germany, and were the most powerful and long-lived of the states that transformed the inheritance of Rome after the Crisis of the Fifth Century. Yet they often remain representative of an imagined 'Dark Age', in which civility was eroded by migration, violence, illiteracy, superstition, and a retreat from globality. Through a deep exploration of manuscripts, charters, and burials, Merovingian Worlds offers a fresh account of the period, outlining its complexities, diversity and creativity. This was a world built on dynamic political, socio-economic, cultural, and religious interactions, and shaped by its wide-ranging connections from Britain and Ireland to Byzantium and beyond. The book provides a critical introduction to the rich source material and the modern debates that shaped our perception of Western Europe after the Fall of Rome.

Teaching to Transform Learning: Pedagogies for Inclusive, Responsive and Socially Just Education

by Deborah Green Deborah Price Deborah Dr Green Deborah Dr Price

Teaching to Transform Learning: Pedagogies for Inclusive, Responsive and Socially Just Education provides a foundational discussion of a range of teaching and learning strategies aiming to engage all learners by embracing their lived experiences, histories, contexts and identities. Section one outlines concepts that frame and underpin approaches to pedagogy that are inclusive of and engage all learners. These concepts include exploring Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing; traversing identities in the school, self and system; and understanding culturally and religiously responsive pedagogies. Section two builds on these concepts and presents contemporary approaches to engage all learners, with a focus on visual art and body-based learning, nature-based approaches and learning outside of the classroom. Section three emphasises empowering strategies for skill development and futures thinking for all students, focusing on citizenship education, transdisciplinary inquiry and flipping constructivist pedagogies to better enable depth and breadth of student learning.

Slavery and Freedom in Black Thought in the Early Spanish Atlantic (Afro-Latin America)

by Chloe L. Ireton

Weaving together thousands of archival fragments, this study explores a shared Black Atlantic world where the meanings of slavery and freedom were fiercely contested and claimed. It recreates the worlds of extraordinary individuals and communities in the long sixteenth century, whilst mapping the development of early modern Black thought about slavery and freedom. From a free Black mother's embarkation license to cross the Atlantic Ocean, to an enslaved Sevillian woman's epistles to her freed husband in New Spain, to an enslaved man's negotiations with prospective buyers on the auction block in Mexico City, to a Black man's petition to reclaim his liberty after his illegitimate enslavement, Chloe L. Ireton explores how Africans and their descendants reckoned with laws and theological discourses that legitimized the enslavement of Black people and the varied meanings of freedom across legal jurisdictions. Their intellectual labor reimagined the epistemic worlds of slavery and freedom in the early modern Atlantic.

Contemporary Body Horror (Elements in the Gothic)

by Xavier Aldana Reyes

'Body horror', a horror subgenre concerned with transformation, loss of control and the human body's susceptibility to disease, infection and external harm, has moved into the mainstream to become one of the greatest repositories of biopolitical discourse. Put simply, body horror acts out the power flows of modern life, visualising often imperceptible or ignored processes of marginalisation and behavioural policing, and revealing how interrelations between different social spheres (medical, legal, political, educational) produce embodied identity. This book offers the first sustained study of the types of body horror that have been popular in the twenty-first century and centres on the representational and ideological work they carry out. It proposes that, thanks to the progressive vision of feminist, queer and anti-racist practitioners, this important subgenre has expanded its ethical horizons and even found a sense of celebratory liberation in fantastic metamorphoses redolent of contemporary activist movements.

Evolution of the Arborescent Gymnosperms: Pattern, Process and Diversity

by Christopher N. Page

The arborescent gymnosperms are the most prevalent trees in one-third of the world's forests, and have dominated the Earth's forest ecosystems through much of evolutionary time. They encompass over 70 living genera and nearly 700 species of evergreen conifers and related trees, and include the largest and longest-lived organisms on this planet. This two-volume treatise provides detailed descriptions of each genus based on first-hand surveys of their structure, adaption, ecology, function and development. It also incorporates evidence from molecular studies, palaeobotany and environmental data to provide a holistic understanding of their overall evolution and diversity. Covering the world's temperate and tropical forests, Volume 1 principally focuses on Northern Hemisphere genera while Volume 2 covers those with a predominantly Southern Hemisphere range. Together, the set provides a comprehensive, global reference for researchers in palaeobotany, plant science, geobiology, evolutionary biology, ecology and plant genetics, as well as arboriculturists and conservation managers.

Adult Patient with Intraventricular, Paraventricular and Pineal Region Lesions (Elements in Emergency Neurosurgery)

by Mohamed Dablouk Mahmoud Kamel

Intraventricular lesions are uncommon, and they can arise from numerous structures around the ventricular system, including the ependyma, septum pellucidum and choroid plexus. Pineal region lesions may arise from the pineal gland parenchymal/supporting cells or glial cells of the midbrain/medial thalamus. Many of these lesions are either found incidentally or present with symptoms of hydrocephalus. Careful assessment of the clinical and radiological features of each case can help to narrow the differential diagnosis in this heterogenous group of tumours.

Behaviour Beyond the Text and the Morality Clause in Twenty-First-Century Publishing (Elements in Publishing and Book Culture)

by Chiara Bullen

A morality clause allows contracting parties to terminate a contractual agreement with those who exhibit behaviour deemed unacceptable. Established in 1920s Hollywood, these contractual clauses are now found in twenty-first-century publishing agreements. This Element investigates the presence of the morality clause in the UK book publishing industry in relation to an increased focus on author behaviour beyond the text in the twenty-first-century, examining the way it operates within the publishing field in the context of behaviour perceived to be 'problematic'. It asserts the clause is perceived to be needed due to the emergence of social media and twenty-first-century social contexts combining to impact the author-reader relationship which, in turn, leads to author behaviour acting as a paratextual threshold to their work. This Element presents an analysis of the morality clause in practice, concluding the clause has the potential to further the power imbalance between author and publisher.

Toiling for Oil: A Social History of Petroleum in Iran

by Touraj Atabaki

Often referred to as the 'Oil Century,' the twentieth century marked the rise of petroleum as a pivotal force in global economics and politics. While many studies have explored the political relations between oil corporations and the Iranian state, this innovative book builds an intricate picture of the social history of petroleum in Iran, after its discovery there in 1908. Through expert interviews and on-the-ground reports, Touraj Atabaki shows the seismic impact of oil: from the building of roads to an influx of migrant labour. Offering insights into the lives and challenges of oil workers alongside analysis of wider geopolitical conflicts, Toiling for Oil traverses two world wars, industrialisation and modernisation, attempts at nationalisation in the 1950s and the political crises of the late 1970s. An essential read for anyone interested in Iran's unique position in the global economic landscape as oil continues to shape our world.

A Way to Live Now: How Journalism Shaped Ernest Hemingway

by John Fenstermaker

A Way to Live Now juxtaposes the dual roles of fiction writer and journalist throughout the career of Ernest Hemingway. Focusing on the author’s appearances in Esquire over forty years, John Fenstermaker traces the evolving nature of Hemingway’s presence in its pages: first as the author of twenty-five essays (1933–1936) and six short stories (1936–1939), then as a popular subject for interactions among editors, subscribers, and critics (1933–1961), a process that continued posthumously with reprintings, miscellanea, and reader commentaries (1961–1973). Developing a friendship and correspondence with founding editor Arnold Gingrich, Hemingway contributed to twenty-eight of the magazine’s first thirty-three issues, including classic pieces such as “On the Blue Water” and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.” Through Esquire, Fenstermaker finds a portal for tracing a documentary record of Hemingway as both writer and public figure.Filled with incisive commentaries on his roles as reporter, essayist, and fiction writer, A Way to Live Now: How Journalism Shaped Ernest Hemingway offers new perspectives on the eventful life and work of one of the twentieth century’s most influential authors and complicated personalities.

Manual of Primary Care Dermatology

by D. Kishore Yellumahanthi

This manual describes the issues of diagnosing and managing skin diseases relevant to primary care, where the vast majority of dermatology patients are initially investigated. In most circumstances, primary care physicians need to assess and diagnose skin conditions without the aid of any laboratory or other diagnostic tests. Given that dermatological training for primary care providers is limited, this can make it challenging to diagnose skin diseases accurately, more so for those in the early stages of their career. The Manual of Primary Care Dermatology is written by a dermatologically trained practicing primary care physician to address the issues in managing skin diseases in primary care medicine. It provides readers with practical guidance on the differential diagnosis of skin diseases. The anatomical approach presented makes it easy for the reader to manage their patients' skin condition. With chapters dedicated to lesions of the scalp, face or upper extremity, it represents a quick reference book even for a busy practitioner. It is therefore essential reading for all primary care physicians and dermatologists looking for a compact reference to the differential diagnosis of all skin diseases.
