Raptor

by Gary Jennings

The epic story of Thorn, a fifth-century Goth wanderer who becomes friend and counselor to Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogoth king who temporarily revitalized the decaying Roman Empire. Thorn, a most unusual hero indeed, is a hermaphrodite. While Thorn's dual sexuality may prove off-putting to some readers, particularly because of his many and often graphic sexual encounters (even though most are recounted with good humor and sly wit), his nature does provide for some interesting perspective on events. He learns of his unique nature when he is raped in a monastery and then becomes himself a seducer in a convent, all at the age of 12 and all without knowing exactly what he's doing. Sent packing, Thorn spends valuable time as companion to a crafty and knowledgeable old Roman centurion-turned-woodsman and a winter passing himself off as a rich nobleman in a city on the edge of the Empire (learning to exploit both his male and female aspects all the while). When he finally joins his countrymen, the Ostrogoths, he discovers that their young king, Theodoric, was the stranger who saved his life in the woods after he was bitten by a poisonous snake. Thorn immediately enlists in Theodoric's cause and serves him throughout his historic conquest. His ability to act as either man or woman serves him, his king, and their cause very well indeed. In the most improbable adventure of all, he encounters an evil ``twin'' who shares his sexual duality. An impressive, often violent saga that allows readers to experience a richly re-created time and place through the eyes of a hero unlike virtually any other in fact or fiction. Along the way, it also offers some thought-provoking critiques on Christianity and its origins.

Relative Sins

by Cynthia Victor

From the dust jacket: "Kailey Davids should have felt like the luckiest little girl in the world. Her Russian emigre parents own Radost, the most exclusive nightclub in Manhattan, and they've devoted their lives to their daughter's happiness. But even they can't convince her of her own beauty--that will require Cameron Hawkes. He makes her feel special in a way no one else ever has. When Cameron and Kailey marry and have a child, Kailey believes they make a perfect family--a sophisticated entrepreneur husband who is a rising star, and an adorable baby girl. Still, Kailey's parents worry that Cameron isn't the man they would have chosen for her. And indeed, he isn't. For when Cameron's carefully constructed mask slips, it reveals a man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Kailey flees, and when she does, she loses her baby daughter--forever, she believes--in an accident her husband engineers. But unknown to Kailey, now a lifetime away from her husband's evil, her daughter is alive. For years, Susannah Holland will wish for one thing above all else--a real family. Growing up in a foster home where she was never loved, Susannah vows she'll escape--and never rely on anyone but herself. Yet unbeknownst to her, her mother still longs for the daughter she thought she'd never see again. Cameron, Kailey, and Susannah will live separate lives, continents apart, little dreaming of the forces of fate waiting to reunite them. From New York City to California to Rome to the camps of Thailand and back again, Relative Sins is a stunning, shocking story about how the past reaches out to hold us all, about the unbreakable bonds of love between mother and daughter. Told with the drive that marks a first-class storyteller, Relative Sins is a sensational novel by a writer with an unbeatable willingness to ride the rapids of the heart." Contains some descriptions of adult intimate relations.

by Eleanor Craig

Ann Craig was the perfect daughter-bright, beautiful, loving, giving. At home and in school, with family and with friends, she was a child that any mother could be proud of. Then, as she was about to graduate with honors from an Ivy League university, Ann suffered a mental breakdown. After months at a prestigious psychiatric hospital, she recovered and seemed ready to resume a life destined for success and fulfillment. But instead, she suffered a relapse-only the first of many illusions shattered as Ann's life became a downward spiral of anorexia and drug addiction, ending ultimately in her death. For any mother-helpless and frantically attempting to do something, anything, to help-this would be a nightmare. But for Eleanor Craig, Ann's mother and a famed therapist-teacher who specializes in working with emotionally impaired young people, Ann's troubled life was a heartbreaking irony.
