Queen Geeks in Love
by Laura PrebleShelby Chapelle was a loner whose ideal night involved old sci-fi flicks and chocolate. But last year, she met the tall, tattooed Becca Gallagher and her life changed. Together with Goth-poet Amber Fellerman and number-obsessed Elisa Crunch, they formed the Queen Geek Social Club and set out to find others of their kind. FIRST RULE OF THE QUEEN GEEKS, NEVER LET GUYS GET IN THE WAY. This year, Becca has big plans for the Queen Geeks. She thinks working on the club's website and planning GeekFest (a talent show of geek-tastic proportions) should be Shelby's number one priority. Guys have always been strictly secondary to the goal spreading geekiness to every corner of Green Pines High School... and then the world! But sophomore year heats up when Shelby is swept off her feet by the karaoke stylings of a guy named Fletcher. Then Becca and Amber fall for the same guy, which results in a cursed love triangle. (Or a doomed love rhombus, if you count Shelby and Fletcher.) The going can get tough when Queen Geeks fall in love, but Shelby knows that being true to your inner geek is the most important thing. That, plus peace, love, and chocolate.
Queen for a Day
by Barbara CohenThirteen-year-old Gertie Warshefsky lives with her grandmother and aunts in Brooklyn instead of in an orphanage, a debt Gertie is not allowed to forget. Grandma's constant reminders of Gertie's hopeless parents --"a mother in a lunatic asylum and a ne'er-do- well father out West somewhere 'making his fortune'"-- are made worse by threats that school is a waste of her time. It sometimes seems to Gertie that no one cares for or understands her. The aunts, though only a few years older than she, treat her like their personal maid, and even her best friend's good intentions turn out wrong. How is she to escape this trap that seems to have been laid for her since the day she was born? Gertie's account of her triumph over unfortunate odds is a warm and tender story, spiced with self-effacing humor. The ancient story of Queen Esther's brave stand against Haman, presented at the local religious school's annual Purim celebration, inspires her realization that, despite harsh realities, life is full of hope.

Raiders of the Lost Corset: A Crime of Fashion Mystery
by Ellen ByerrumHome of the helmet hairdo and congressional comb-over, Washington, D.C., is a hotbed of fashion faux pas. If anyone should know, it's "Crimes of Fashion" columnist Lacey Smithsonian. She dishes out advice to the scandal-scorched, and clothing-clueless, doing her part to change this town one fashion victim at a time.... FIT TO KILL Lacey is busting with excitement for her first trip to France. She'll be with her friend Magda Rousseau, corset creator for D.C.'s wealthiest (and kinkiest) citizens. And-best of all-the trip's on her newspaper's dime, since she'll supposedly be there to report on haute couture. The real reason for the trip, though, is the Rousseau family mystèry: the whereabouts of a lost corset lined with jewels supposedly stolen from Russia after the assassination of Czar Nicholas's family. But just before the big adventure, someone poisons Magda. Could it have something to do with the priceless corset? To find out, Lacey must follow a thread from Normandy to New Orleans.... Raptor
by Gary JenningsThe epic story of Thorn, a fifth-century Goth wanderer who becomes friend and counselor to Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogoth king who temporarily revitalized the decaying Roman Empire. Thorn, a most unusual hero indeed, is a hermaphrodite. While Thorn's dual sexuality may prove off-putting to some readers, particularly because of his many and often graphic sexual encounters (even though most are recounted with good humor and sly wit), his nature does provide for some interesting perspective on events. He learns of his unique nature when he is raped in a monastery and then becomes himself a seducer in a convent, all at the age of 12 and all without knowing exactly what he's doing. Sent packing, Thorn spends valuable time as companion to a crafty and knowledgeable old Roman centurion-turned-woodsman and a winter passing himself off as a rich nobleman in a city on the edge of the Empire (learning to exploit both his male and female aspects all the while). When he finally joins his countrymen, the Ostrogoths, he discovers that their young king, Theodoric, was the stranger who saved his life in the woods after he was bitten by a poisonous snake. Thorn immediately enlists in Theodoric's cause and serves him throughout his historic conquest. His ability to act as either man or woman serves him, his king, and their cause very well indeed. In the most improbable adventure of all, he encounters an evil ``twin'' who shares his sexual duality. An impressive, often violent saga that allows readers to experience a richly re-created time and place through the eyes of a hero unlike virtually any other in fact or fiction. Along the way, it also offers some thought-provoking critiques on Christianity and its origins.

Her younger daughter Valessa, 15, was also gone without a trace. RATTLESNAKE Valessa was a troubled teen with a trouble-making boyfriend, Adam "Rattlesnake" Davis, 19, a drug dealer with a record for burglary and auto theft. She'd last been seen with him and his buddy Jon Whispel, also 19. Now all three were on the run. BUSTED A multi-state dragnet for the fugitive teen trio ended in their capture in Texas after a high-speed car chase. They confessed that they'd been tripping on acid when Valessa had suggested they kill her mom for trying to break up her romance with Davis. Davis then fatally stabbed Vicki Robinson. This is their story-a tale of the kind of real-life terror that can come out of nowhere and destroy a family forever.
