Education Law, Strategic Policy and Sustainable Development in Africa: Agenda 2063
by A. C. Onuora-Oguno W. O. Egbewole T. E. KlevenThis book outlines the findings and suggestions of the Law and Society Association’s International Research Collaborations, which focused on the African Union’s Agenda 2063. This outlined the ideal Africa aspired to by the year 2063: ‘the Africa we want’. The authors examine socio-economic rights issues and their impact on developing a strong educational agenda that can drive Africa to realize Agenda 2063. As Africa’s development has remained slow in the face of many challenges, the need to embrace good governance, rule of law and human rights obligations are major tools to realize the continent’s potential. The project focuses in particular on the central place of education law and policy in achieving the goals of Agenda 2063.
Indispensability (Elements in the Philosophy of Mathematics)
by Alan Baker A. C. PaseauOur best scientific theories explain a wide range of empirical phenomena, make accurate predictions, and are widely believed. Since many of these theories make ample use of mathematics, it is natural to see them as confirming its truth. Perhaps the use of mathematics in science even gives us reason to believe in the existence of abstract mathematical objects such as numbers and sets. These issues lie at the heart of the Indispensability Argument, to which this Element is devoted. The Element's first half traces the evolution of the Indispensability Argument from its origins in Quine and Putnam's works, taking in naturalism, confirmational holism, Field's program, and the use of idealisations in science along the way. Its second half examines the explanatory version of the Indispensability Argument, and focuses on several more recent versions of easy-road and hard-road fictionalism respectively.
The Euclidean Programme (Elements in the Philosophy of Mathematics)
by A. C. Paseau Wesley WrigleyThe Euclidean Programme embodies a traditional sort of epistemological foundationalism, according to which knowledge – especially mathematical knowledge – is obtained by deduction from self-evident axioms or first principles. Epistemologists have examined foundationalism extensively, but neglected its historically dominant Euclidean form. By contrast, this book offers a detailed examination of Euclidean foundationalism, which, following Lakatos, the authors call the Euclidean Programme. The book rationally reconstructs the programme's key principles, showing it to be an epistemological interpretation of the axiomatic method. It then compares the reconstructed programme with select historical sources: Euclid's Elements, Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, Descartes's Discourse on Method, Pascal's On the Geometric Mind and a twentieth-century account of axiomatisation. The second half of the book philosophically assesses the programme, exploring whether various areas of contemporary mathematics conform to it. The book concludes by outlining a replacement for the Euclidean Programme.

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Manchester Physics Series #40)
by A. C. PhillipsIntroduction to Quantum Mechanics is an introduction to the power and elegance of quantum mechanics. Assuming little in the way of prior knowledge, quantum concepts are carefully and precisely presented, and explored through numerous applications and problems. Some of the more challenging aspects that are essential for a modern appreciation of the subject have been included, but are introduced and developed in the simplest way possible. Undergraduates taking a first course on quantum mechanics will find this text an invaluable introduction to the field and help prepare them for more advanced courses. Introduction to Quantum Mechanics: * Starts from basics, reviewing relevant concepts of classical physics where needed. * Motivates by considering weird behaviour of quantum particles. * Presents mathematical arguments in their simplest form.
The Physics of Stars (Manchester Physics Series)
by A. C. PhillipsThe Physics of Stars, Second Edition, is a concise introduction to the properties of stellar interiors and consequently the structure and evolution of stars. Strongly emphasising the basic physics, simple and uncomplicated theoretical models are used to illustrate clearly the connections between fundamental physics and stellar properties. This text does not intend to be encyclopaedic, rather it tends to focus on the most interesting and important aspects of stellar structure, evolution and nucleosynthesis. In the Second Edition, a new chapter on Helioseismology has been added, along with a list of physical constants and extra student problems. There is also new material on the Hertztsprung-Russell diagram, as well as a general updating of the entire text. It includes numerous problems at the end of each chapter aimed at both testing and extending student's knowledge.
Aspects of British Economic History: 1918-1925 (Routledge Library Editions: Landmarks in the History of Economic Thought #6)
by A. C. PigouCovering the period from November 1918 to the restoration of the Gold Standard in the UK in April 1925, this book, originally published in 1947, sets out and explains the economic facts of the immediate post-war period. There are sections on employment, production, government intervention in industry, the monetary factor, real income and real wages. A statistical appendix brings together in four sections a number of important tables which supplement the text.
Industrial Fluctuations (Routledge Library Editions: Landmarks in the History of Economic Thought)
by A. C. PigouRejecting the idea of an equilibrium business cycle, this book, originally published in 1927, studies those industrial fluctuations which extend over short spans of years: cyclical fluctuations. The causes of these cycles are discussed and the consequences which result and way in which to mitigate these consequences with regard to social well-being are examined. Although Pigou’s approach went out of fashion following Keynes, it is similar in spirit to much of the late twentieth-century work stimulated by real business cycle theory.
Protective and Preferential Import Duties (Routledge Library Editions: Landmarks in the History of Economic Thought)
by A. C. PigouA.C. Pigou spent his career in the shadow of Marshall and Keynes and his contributions have seemed small by comparison, but his influence remains significant. He is regarded by many as the father of modern public finance and welfare theory, as the way that economists analyze and justify government intervention in economic affairs stems from Pigou. Following on from A. C. Pigou’s 1903 pamphlet, The Riddle of the Tariff, this book, originally published in 1906, is a more technical treatment, leaning on the Marshalian apparatus and coming out against the policy of Imperial preference.

Nothing is certain, everything changes, and the only way to find answers is to stop analyzing things and do! The cut-to-the-chase, jargon-free perfect sequel to Be, A. C. Ping's Do is packed full with big ideas, straight-talking wit and wisdom, and illuminating advice. But whereas Be is about contemplation, Do encourages action. It is another small book with a big, bold agenda that invites us to ask-and answer. Read it and find the courage and commitment to stop searching for the meaning of life-and start living it.

Skepticism: Historical and Contemporary Inquiries
by A. C. Rutherford G. BrunoSkepticism is one of the most enduring and profound of philosophical problems. With its roots in Plato and the Sceptics to Descartes, Hume, Kant and Wittgenstein, skepticism presents a challenge that every philosopher must reckon with. In this outstanding collection philosophers engage with skepticism in five clear sections: the philosophical history of skepticism in Greek, Cartesian and Kantian thought; the nature and limits of certainty; the possibility of knowledge and related problems such as perception and the debates between objective knowledge and constructivism; the transcendental method as a response to skepticism and the challenge of naturalism; overcoming the skeptical challenge. Skepticism: Historical and Contemporary Inquiries is essential reading for students and scholars in epistemology and the history of philosophy and will also be of interest to those in related disciplines such as religion and sociology.
The Luxembourg Gutland Landscape
by A. M. Kooijman L. H. Cammeraat A. C. SeijmonsbergenThis book gathers older and current knowledge of the evolution and functioning of cuesta landscapes to provide a better understanding of the Luxembourgian landscape. The geological variety and tectonic setting of the area provide excellent opportunities to study landscape development, hydrology, geomorphological processes, soil formation, forest vegetation and interrelationships between them, which are characteristic of larger parts of Europe. The book is organized around four themes. The first addresses the development of the Luxembourgian cuesta landscape, covering geological evolution, lithology, geomorphological characteristics and hydrology, as well as the scientific history of research in this area. The second theme addresses aspects of the landscape's geo-ecological- system functioning and development, including soils, nutrient availability, forest ecology and educational approaches to study geo-ecological systems, including old and modern mapping techniques. The third theme is related to biological and physico-chemical control of erosion processes, including the impact of (macro-)fauna, vegetation and substrate on soil erosion processes. The last theme discusses practical applications of the research findings.
Darwin and Modern Science
by A. C. SewardThe Cambridge Philosophical Society collected this series of essays in commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. Aiming to be accessible to the 'educated layman', the eminent contributors reviewed the impact of Darwin's ideas in many spheres. They addressed contemporary (1909) attitudes, Darwin's theories and their far-reaching implications, and the progress of new lines of research that had emerged from them. The diversity of views among biologists regarding both the origin of species and the best directions for further research is clearly evident. In his work, Darwin had sought only the truth, writing 'Absolute accuracy is the hardest merit to attain, and the highest merit. Any deviation is ruin.' However dramatic the controversies he stirred, what shines from these essays is profound admiration for both Darwin's intellect and the quality of his character.
Nepali Diaspora in a Globalised Era (Nepal and Himalayan Studies)

But times have quickly grown lean, and to liven up their exile, Jose decides to mug a family of American tourists. Among the spoils are physics texts, which launch Mr. Quark on a side-splitting, boisterous adventure north to California, where he confronts the owner of the books with his own theories on relativity, the nature of the universe, and looking for the meaning of life in all the wrong places....

John Haughton who found glory in the hard fought campaigns on the frontiers of India at the time of Queen Victoria and the British Raj. In the main, the book focusses on Haughton’s time as the officer in charge of the gallant 36th Sikhs engaged on the Tirah expedition. He survived the vicious, often guerrilla combat, with the Afridi, Chamkani and Orakzai tribesmen but fell during the difficult retreat back from the Dargai heights.
