A Testimony of Blood: An epic fantasy infused with the mythology of West Africa

We've hidden long enough.' For those with the wit to learn, there is no better teacher than death. A Theological Approach to Vulnerability: Towards a Humane Ethics
by Carolina Montero OrphanopoulosThis book explores the symbols of vulnerability, narratives of vulnerability, and ethical norms of vulnerability in the Bible. Focusing on the great Tradition of the Church—from Stoic and Neoplatonic influence to the Moral Systems—and the approach to the Second Vatican Council, the volume helps to comprehend, deepen and clarify the concept of vulnerability. As a theory, it addresses the construction of ethics of vulnerability, its characteristics, the fundamental categories it should include. Reinforced by “An Interdisciplinary Approach to Vulnerability: Towards a Humane Ethics (Vol I)”, written by the same author, this book hopes to lead the discourse of Christian ethics towards a better understanding and ultimately build towards a greater integration of the vulnerability of the human being.
A Theology of Home in a Time of Homelessness (Elements in Christian Doctrine)
by Siobhán GarriganHomelessness abounds today in various forms of displacement and as a pervasive condition of unbelonging. It ruins health, lives, communities, habitats, creativity, and hope. This Element argues that for theology to play its part in ending homelessness, it must better understand its own concept of 'home'. The Element proposes a vision of home capable of resisting the tacit, mistaken theology of home that undergirds the various iterations of modern homelessness. Weaving biblical and ritual sources, the argument constructs theological responses to the twin forces of consumerism and nationalism which, alloyed with sexism and racism, constitute the time of homelessness in which we live. It asks the reader to imagine home as 'participating instead of possessing' in every sphere of life, in pursuit of a theology of home capable of preventing homelessness and not merely ministering to people experiencing it. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This thoroughly researched study includes:an investigation into the historical framework of the book: authorship, date, and occasion and purpose;a survey of literary-theological foundations: genre, text and canonicity, grammar and symbolic language, use of the Old Testament, literary structure, and interpretation; anda full literary-theological reading of the book, culminating in an exploration of the book's most significant theological themes: God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the people of God, worship, discipleship, salvation, God's judgment of evil, and the new creation.Readers will find here a study that is clearly written, attentive to the historical-literary context, with special attention given to the primary theological themes in the book. A Theory of Traces and the Divergence Theorem (Lecture Notes in Mathematics #2372)
by Friedemann Schuricht Moritz SchönherrThis book provides a new approach to traces, which are viewed as linear continuous functionals on some function space. A key role in the analysis is played by integrals related to finitely additive measures, which have not previously been considered in the literature. This leads to Gauss-Green formulas on arbitrary Borel sets for vector fields having divergence measure as well as for Sobolev and BV functions. The integrals used do not require trace functions or normal fields on the boundary and they can deal with inner boundaries. For the treatment of apparently intractable degenerate cases a second boundary integral is used. The calculus developed here also allows integral representations for the precise representative of an integrable function and for the usual boundary trace of Sobolev or BV functions. The theory presented gives a new perspective on traces for beginners as well as experts interested in partial differential equations. The integral calculus might also be a stimulating tool for geometric measure theory.
A Theory of Uncertainty: Perspectives in Philosophy, Social Sciences, and Risk Research (Earthscan Risk in Society)
by Andreas KlinkeUsing sources from classical to modern that broach the phenomenon of uncertainty and its relation to risk, this book creates a novel approach to the recognized but theoretically often unattended issue of uncertainty.Andreas Klinke develops a new, general theory of uncertainty that provides a taxonomy of categories which are deduced from a critical inventory in philosophy, social and natural sciences, and risk research. Comprising six parts, the philosophical grounding of uncertainty sets the stage for the following philosophical and social scientific accounts and explanation of four distinctive guises of uncertainty that form a taxonomic notion and rationale: ontological, epistemological, linguistic-communicative, and teleological uncertainty. The theoretical-conceptual rumination provides a complex, differentiated view of the anatomy of uncertainty and an understanding that can be used in further theoretical and empirical research, as well as socio-political practice. The latter is delineated in the final part addressing the societal domestication of uncertainty. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students in philosophy, social and natural sciences, risk research, as well as inter- and transdisciplinary science fields.

A Thing Is Only Known When It Is Gone
by Joe BaumannFlowers bloom from the body of a man after his lover’s touch. Grieving parents find a way to communicate with their lost children. A teacher with water in his veins is held accountable when the extracurricular club he advises goes rogue. In these and other fantastical stories, Joe Baumann explores relationships, mostly queer, through the lens of the bizarre. The stories in A Thing Is Only Known When It Is Gone are told in lyrical, often startling prose. Baumann’s experimentation with the surreal avoids gimmick and easy metaphor, keeping the complexity of the characters at the center. The strange worlds of these protagonists distort and reflect our own back to us, like the funhouse mirrors in “Morphology” that begin to change the fabric of reality. Ultimately, we may not want to live in a world in which our broken hearts are on display in external birdcages attached to our bodies. But Baumann’s sophisticated, nuanced storytelling makes us wonder, however briefly, whether such a world might be preferable to ours. The emotional poignancy at the heart of each of these stories reaches across the strangeness of all of our possible worlds, tying us together in the universal search for connection.

A Time for the Province: Palimpsests and Borders in Twentieth-Century Polish Literature
by George Z. GasynaWithin discourses on Polish provincial or marginal literature, the eastern borderlands are a richly symbolic region that inspires much fascination and study.Through close readings, surveys, and analyses of transborder narratives by seven modern writers who hailed from the Polish borderlands or set their works there, A Time for the Province demonstrates how the region has come to represent a palimpsest of cultural identities and myths as each new generation unearths and rediscovers them. George Gasyna explores and theorizes the province as a space of grand utopian visions and dystopic gestures about both the Polish past and a Polish future. Offering a novel literary and cultural history of modern Polish writing, he paves the way toward productive new modes of conceptualizing the cultural and literary forms that have come from Central Europe over the last century, challenging many basic assumptions about what this literature can offer its readership in Poland and around the world.Through engagement with the theoretical apparatuses of postmemory studies and border studies, A Time for the Province redefines Polish cultural identity in the current moment of postsocialist transition and globalized citizenship.
