Arab-Islamic Education Systems in the Experience of Migrants and Refugees in Europe: An Historical and Cultural Analysis Focused on Morocco, Syria, Italy, Germany and Sweden (MiGS: Migration - Gesellschaft - Schule)

by Sara Mazzei

In the last decade, Europe has welcomed numerous migrants and refugees from Arab countries. Their scholastic inclusion has been challenging, and the teaching staff had to sometimes deal with unfamiliar realities. The issue has been addressed by various perspectives, from sociology to psychology, insights from which are gathered in intercultural education. In it, there are scarcity of studies that delve into pupils&’ cultural backgrounds, and countries of origin&’s history is seldom regarded as a decisive factor in the formation of identity. Among Arabic-speaking communities the Moroccan and Syrian ones are the most significant and Morocco and Syria have interesting histories and education systems. Using Nussbaum's (2010) multifactorial analysis, this research aims to better understand the educational universe where Arabic-speaking pupils come from, focusing on humanities and religious education in the experience of pupils, especially from Morocco and Syria. Methodology comprehends qualitative empirical research conducted in Europe. Results show the differences experienced by pupils in their educational paths among diverse Arab and European countries and the more sensitive topics they encounter in their education in Europe in relation to their identity.

The following four chapters adopt a chronological and analytical approach to address topics of lasting significance. These chapters critically examine the development of ideological currents originating from early Zionist initiatives, the progression of Jewish settlement projects in Palestine from 1891 to 1917, and their contemporary relevance. Furthermore, they investigate the international political responses to the Palestine issue during the First and Second World Wars, with particular emphasis on the interactions between the Zionist movement and Western imperialism. In the final section, the book scrutinizes the foundational principles of the Zionist movement and the challenges encountered by the Arab population during the interwar period, offering valuable insights into the complex socio-political realities of the time.

Arabic Media and the Ukrainian Conflict: Discourse and Ideology (Routledge Studies in Middle East Film and Media)

Focused on two renowned Arabic networks, Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiyya, this book examines Arabic media discourses and strategies adopted in the coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.Providing an in-depth textual analysis of the coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the book focuses on the types of discourse employed, key linguistic devices used, and the representation of different actors, whether directly or indirectly involved. This encompasses the attitudes and perceptions of Russians, Ukrainians, Europeans, Americans, and NATO, as well as the wider international community. The book aims to establish the inextricable link between language and the socio-cultural and political ideologies that contribute to the production of media discourse on conflicts. Arabic, Qurʾān, and Poetic License: Reciting the Word of God (Routledge Studies in the Qur'an)

by Shady Hekmat Nasser

This book examines the similarities between the Qurʾān and ancient Arabic poetry, analyzed through the framework of Arabic grammar prior to their standardization and subsequent development into distinct genres.Of central relevance is the relationship between the Qurʾān and Arabic poetry, and how Muslim scholars defined this relationship based on a formulaic structural approach rather than a thematic and motif-oriented one. The book aims to reposition the so-called non-standard usages of Arabic vernaculars, non-canonical readings of the Qurʾān, and unusual grammatical structures in ancient poetry at the heart of the Arabic-Islamic tradition. The book deals with different theological, legal, and social controversies regarding the proper recitation of the Qurʾān and its individuation from poetry and other verbal arts. For the first time, this study offers a comprehensive categorization of unusual grammatical structures in both the Qurʾān and ancient Arabic poetry, which Arab grammarians classified as poetic license. The close affinity between the linguistic styles of the Qurʾān and ancient Arabic poetry suggests that the Qurʾān was a form of ancient Arabic poetry. To individuate the Qurʾān, Muslim scholars put in place various theological and legal restrictions for its proper recitation, the most important of which was tajwīd (Qurʾānic recitation). The book will interest students and scholars of Qurʾānic and Islamic studies, as well as those researching Arabic poetry and grammar.

Aracy de Carvalho and Jewish Rescue from 1930s Germany: A Righteous Brazilian

by Mônica Raisa Schpun

Aracy de Carvalho (1908-2011), 'Righteous Among the Nations', saved German Jews by facilitating their emigration to Brazil in the late 1930s, while working at the Brazilian consulate in Hamburg. Margarethe Levy (1908-2011), who left for Brazil shortly after Kristallnacht with her husband, was one such case. In the late 1970s, she claimed the title of Righteous from Yad Vashem for Carvalho, who had become her lifelong friend. The main thread of this book follows the crossed migrations of these two women between Brazil and Germany, and the long friendship that brought them together. Through this axis it traces the migratory paths of a group of German Jews who, like Levy, left Hamburg to settle in São Paulo.

by Katharina Sachse Claus-Peter Heinrich Silke F. Heiss Sandra Sülzenbrück

Arbitrage and Rational Decisions (Chapman and Hall/CRC Financial Mathematics Series)

by Robert Nau

This unique book offers a new approach to the modeling of rational decision-making under conditions of uncertainty and strategic and competition interactions among agents. It presents a unified theory in which the most basic axiom of rationality is the principle of no-arbitrage, namely that neither an individual decision maker nor a small group of strategic competitors nor a large group of market participants should behave in such a way as to provide a riskless profit opportunity to an outside observer. Both those who work in the finance area and those who work in decision theory more broadly will be interested to find that basic tools from finance (arbitrage pricing and risk-neutral probabilities) have broader applications, including the modeling of subjective probability and expected utility, incomplete preferences, inseparable probabilities and utilities, nonexpected utility, ambiguity, noncooperative games, and social choice. Key results in all these areas can be derived from a single principle and essentially the same mathematics.A number of insights emerge from this approach. One is that the presence of money (or not) is hugely important for modeling decision behavior in quantitative terms and for dealing with issues of common knowledge of numerical parameters of a situation. Another is that beliefs (probabilities) do not need to be uniquely separated from tastes (utilities) for the modeling of phenomena such as aversion to uncertainty and ambiguity. Another over-arching issue is that probabilities and utilities are always to some extent indeterminate, but this does not create problems for the arbitrage-based theories. One of the book’s key contributions is to show how noncooperative game theory can be directly unified with Bayesian decision theory and financial market theory without introducing separate assumptions about strategic rationality. This leads to the conclusion that correlated equilibrium rather than Nash equilibrium is the fundamental solution concept. The book is written to be accessible to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, researchers in the field, and professionals.

Arboreal Symbolism in European Art, 1300–1800 (Routledge Research in Art and Religion)

by Katherine T. Brown

Arboreal Symbolism in European Art, 1300–1800 probes the significance of trees in religious iconography of Western art.Based in the disciplines of art history, botany, and theology, this study focuses on selected works of art in which tree forms embody and reflect Christian themes. Through this triple lens, Brown examines trees that early modern artists rendered as sacred symbols—symbols with origins in the Old Testament, New Testament, Greek and Roman cultures, and early medieval legends. Tree components and wood depicted in works of art can serve as evidence for early modern artists’ embrace of biblical metaphor, classical sources, and devotional connotations. The author considers how artists rendered seasonal change in Christian narratives to emphasize themes of spiritual transformation. Brown argues that many artists and their patrons drew parallels between the life cycle of a tree and events in the Gospels with their respective annual, liturgical celebrations. This book will interest scholars in art history, religion, humanities, and interdisciplinary studies.
